"Five Girls of Guaratinguetá" iconic work by artist Di Cavalcanti - 1932. São Paulo Museum of Art.
In it, the painter portrays five women in an environment reminiscent of the city of Guaratinguetá, in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. The work is marked by Di Cavalcanti's characteristic modernist style, which mixes vibrant colors, geometric shapes and an expressive representation of female figures.
The painting is an emblematic representation of Brazilian culture and identity at the time, using local and popular elements to portray the beauty and diversity of Brazilian women. Di Cavalcanti's work often brought up social, cultural and political themes, reflecting the reality of Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century.
"Cinco Moças de Guaratinguetá" is considered one of Di Cavalcanti's most important paintings and continues to be studied and appreciated for his contribution to modern Brazilian art.
The work features five women in different planes, all wearing hats and clothes that reflect the fashion of the time.
Using the oil on canvas technique, Di Cavalcanti managed to create depth and texture, making the work even more impactful.
His time in Europe brought him valuable contacts, such as Picasso and Matisse. These influences are clearly visible in his work, but always with a Brazilian touch.
The beautiful Benedita and her four daughters, who inspired the work, had an engaging story with the Clown Piolin, adding layers of meaning to the painting.
Di Cavalcanti frequently portrayed mulattas, a clear tribute to Brazil's diversity and cultural richness.

Venus Mulata, Alberto Linero Gallery
Venus Mulata (2000) is a copper sculpture of small format that from the title alludes to the most iconic representation of female beauty: the mythical Venus. But, in the case of this representation, the ideal of beauty embodied is a typical mulatta with a svelte, corpulent, strong and expressive body. In a lofty posture, this woman shows a beauty that represents the Cuban and Caribbean canon.

The Blessed Virgin of Charity--Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre--is the Catholic Patronness of Cuba. No matter how light-skinned her image might look, she is not seen as white but as of mixed European and African descent (mulata); Cubans call her “La Cachita.” In Lucumí (popularly known as “Santería”), she corresponds to Ochún, the goddess (orisha) of sensuality, prosperity, intelligence, sweetness, and fresh water. She is the mother of twins.
In the New World, orishas came to be paired with Roman Catholic saints or Marian apparitions, and their icons continue to represent the spirits on household altars and elsewhere. Although the everyday elevation of the mulatta over other women of African descent was anything but colorblind, the caramel-complexioned Virgin of Charity connected with Ochún the everyday elevation of the mulatta over other women of African descent.
Ironically, the youthful and attractive Virgin’s correspondence with Ochún in popular culture reinforced the stereotype of this orisha as a one-dimensional coquette. As if in response to the limitations foisted on her—as onto other women of African descent—[Lucumí] divination verses and praise-songs paint a vibrant picture of Ochún as wizened medicine woman, affluent matron, talented diviner, weaver, potter, and merchant, with a vulture as her fearless, carrion-eating familiar. The Retirantes is one of Portinari's iconic works . Elizabeth A. M. Kajiya is known for her expertise in art history, particularly in Brazilian art.
She has delved into the significance of pigments and the role of color in the works of Candido Portinari, a renowned Brazilian painter.
Portinari's art often carried strong socio-political messages, and his use of color was a significant tool in conveying these messages.
The Retirantes is one of Portinari's iconic works displayed at the São Paulo Museum of Art. This piece captures the struggles of the rural poor in Brazil, particularly during times of drought and economic hardship. The colors used by Portinari in Retirantes were carefully chosen to evoke emotions and portray the harsh realities faced by these marginalized communities.
Kajiya likely explores how Portinari employed pigments and color theories to convey the emotional depth and social commentary within his artworks. Understanding the significance of color in Portinari's pieces helps unravel the layers of meaning and symbolism embedded in his paintings, offering insights into the historical and cultural contexts of Brazil during his time.
About Candito Portinari.
Considered one of the most expressive names in modernist painting, Portinari sought inspiration in his daily life in Brodowski, the city where he was born, close to Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, to portray rural and urban workers. In O Lavrador de Café, from 1934, for example, he immortalized the importance of black people in agriculture.
Among his paintings that have also gained recognition around the world are scenes of the activities of a washerwoman, a rubber tapper, a miner, a musician, a rafter, a worker or a dockworker, as well as an Indian woman, a mestizo, a mulatta, a Bahian woman, migrants, evacuees or evicted people. All are marked by a context of political, social manifestations or a simple outline of cultural traditions such as popular festivals, typical games and karajá dolls.

@edisonblog
