A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter

Right after I woke up I watched this little Christmas Special 🎄 on Netflix. The most important thing I wanna say is that I’m so proud of Sabrina. She did so great. Amazing personality and she really showed her versatility in this episode. Wow 👏🏼

Having that said…at the end of the day I mainly post about Taylor and I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way. I really appreciate Sabrina’s work on its own. And I recognize their connection at the same time. So yeah I’m gonna do what I always do.

Che il disco sarebbe stato supportato da tre singoli spacca-pista e spacca-schermo (riguardo ancora oggi con piacere i video di "Disturbia" o di "Man Down"). Il lungo e fortunatissimo destino discografico di Rih-ri Fenty è da considerarsi davvero riuscito col precedente Unapologetic, un disco finalmente poco pasticciato, con una produzione avvolgente e tanti capolini fuori dal gangsta-world.

Anti esce supportato solo da un singolo, "Work". Poco prima viene rilasciato nn brano ("FourFiveSeconds"), nonostante i featuring altisonanti quali Kanye West e Paul McCartney, non comparirà in tracklist cos�� come il successivo non-singolo "Bitch Better Have My Money", dall’incessante ritornello dubstep: famosissimo fra i giovanissimi ma anch’esso fuori dall’edizione standard dell’album. Il ragionamento e l’atteggiamento di Rih-ri è un bel fuck-off all’industria musicale, ai suoi ritmi e alle sue forzature. Anti è un album che vuol far vedere il contrario di tutta la Rihanna che conosciamo: a partire dall’anti-singolo per eccellenza, "Work" (con Drake), un brano che non ha che un soffio di strumentazione per lasciare tutto alla voce portante di Rihanna: una dolce e spensierata filastrocca che prende per mano l’ospite per lasciarlo subito, tanto poco egli lascia l’impronta sul brano. Le atmosfere post-dubstep (quelli erano gli anni) sono velate, e riescono a creare solo un amalgama dalla quale la voce è sempre e costantemente lo strumento principale: in primo piano ma senza mai primeggiare fra gli altri suoni. "Kiss it better" la vede sempre duettare con una chitarra elettrica creando forse le migliori melodie vocali in un brano che non avrebbe stonato in un album di Prince. Oscura e sensuale "Desperado" (da segnalare il remix di MK), Rihanna canticchia, urla, strilla, parla, balla, dà il ritmo e prende il tempo… tutto con la sua voce, a volte raddoppiata, a volte triplicata come un harmonizer. I suonini digitali di "Yeah I said it"; l’hip-hop/trap di "Needed Me" ci mostra una versione desaturata di Skrillex.

La bellezza minimale di Anti sta anche nella sua versatilità, nel modo in cui a volte prende sonorità psichedeliche, post-soul e anni ’60 come in "James Joint": synthpop da camera, sballo da CBD sexy e nebuloso. Anti tocca il punto più alto con la cover "Same Ol’ Mistakes" dei Tame Impala: un brano perfetto che difficilmente si distacca dall’originale, come se Rih-ri si divertisse semplicemente a cantare sopra lo stesso pezzo di Currents. "Never-ending" è il brano più vocale, solo chitarra e voce, quasi come Taylor Swift, con un piede nel blues e uno nel cantautorato. Ancora più filologicamente perfetto "Love on the Brain", struggente e dolce ninna-nanna quasi da road-movie, con gorgheggi blues, piano hammond e un registro pazzesco e vesatile. "Higher" ci riporta indietro ai grammofoni degli anni ’50 dove Rihanna canta a squarciagola tirando fuori tutto il suo registro fino a graffiare di passione; "Close to You tocca" forse le note più romantiche di una tipica colonna sonora americana: da serie tv, da film strappalacrime… poco importa: Rihanna ha fatto una panoramica della musica americana partendo dalle sue radici, riuscendo a trovare una chiave di lettura convincente senza far calare di un attimo l’attenzione per poi tornare alla fine sulle sue sonorità anche turbolente, oscure ("Goodnight Gotham") e sperimentali ("Pose"), per poi concludere con un altro brano psichedelico, nebuloso e sexy ("Sex With me") che ci fa ricordare chi è Rihanna oggi. Un’icona musicale e visuale (Instagram nel 2012 stava esplodendo), che sceglie i propri look guardando le nuove anti-icone di fashion (tanto somiglia ad una Natalia Vodianova o ad una Cara Delevigne in "Bitch Better Have my Money") o di arte (tanto somiglia a Jean-Miquel Basquiat nelle immagini promozionali dell’Anti Tour 2016).
