Effy Giraffe Stuns Fans with the Surprise Release of “End Of This World” — The Long-Awaited Sequel to 2014’s “Out Of This World”
Tumblr media
Effy Giraffe has sent shockwaves through the music world with the surprise announcement of her latest album, End Of This World, which will drop on December 20, 2024. Fans of the iconic artist have been waiting a decade for a follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2014 release Out Of This World, an album that remains unavailable on streaming platforms due to a legal dispute with producer Michael Light. Until now, many thought the long-anticipated sequel might never see the light of day.
Adding to the excitement — and perhaps controversy — Michael Light is credited as a producer on several tracks for End Of This World. Even more surprising is the involvement of Light’s son, Elliot Light, who contributed piano arrangements for two songs: “From My Past” and Effy’s haunting cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon.” It’s unclear whether Effy and Michael Light resolved their legal feud, as Out Of This World (2014) remains absent from all streaming services.
Tracklist for “End Of This World”
1. End Of This World (Introduction)
2. Discovery
3. Galaxy
4. Cruel II
5. You’re Gonna Want Me
6. Rhiannon
7. From My Past
8. High (Out Of This World Remix)
9. Drugs (In My Life)
10. My Heart’s On Fire
11. Blur
12. Russian Spy
13. Save My Soul
14. You
We reached out to Michael Light, who graciously agreed to sit down for an exclusive Q&A:
Q&A: Michael Light
Q1: How does it feel to return as a producer for Effy Giraffe’s new album after all these years?
Michael Light: It’s been an incredible journey. Effy and I have always had undeniable creative chemistry, and it was exciting to channel that energy into End Of This World.
Q2: What inspired you to work on this album despite the legal complications surrounding Out Of This World?
Michael Light: At the end of the day, it’s about the music. When Effy reached out, we had quite a bit of conversations before I agreed and we had to work a lot out. It just all fell together perfectly
Q3: Your son, Elliot, played piano on two tracks. How did his involvement come about?
Michael Light: Elliot is a brilliant musician. Effy heard him play one day and immediately wanted him to be involved on “From My Past” and “Rhiannon.”
Q4: What was it like to reimagine Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”?
Michael Light: It was a process. I actually stressed she not put a cover on the album, though she pointed out Out Of This World featured a few covers so she felt it was a must. I just think covering a classic like that is tough… to win me over I feel like that’s why she asked Elliot to play on that one, which added a melancholic yet hopeful tone.
Q5: Can you share any insights into the creative process for “Cruel II”?
Michael Light: This was one I wasn’t involved in. I do know it originally wasn’t finished in time for neither of her synth-wave projects Beginning of the End and End of the Beginning. I had no involvement in any of her recent work. So I believe she worked with Johnnyboy Productions and BBB Productions to put that one together.
Q6: What’s your favorite track from the new album?
Michael Light: “Discovery” — it’s otherworldly and encapsulates the essence of the album perfectly. The way the introduction track and Discovery blend so well are just a lot of fun. And we got to sample her song Out Of This World in the intro which was also exciting to put together.
Q7: Were there challenges working with Effy after the legal dispute?
Michael Light: I prefer to focus on the music. Every creative partnership has its hurdles.
Q8: How has Effy evolved as an artist since 2014?
Michael Light: She’s fearless. This album really does highlight every genre of her career. We have some ballads, synth-wave, EDM, hip hop elements, dubstep undertones. The album is a real celebration of her discography, and you can hear it in every lyric.
Q9: What’s the story behind the “Out Of This World Remix” of “High”?
Michael Light: It’s a nod to fans who enjoyed the original album. I secretly remixed the song and we released it September 6, 2024 as a test to see if fans responded to that genre of music more than her synth-wave work. It inspired us to actually finish End Of This World which was actually halted for quite some time.
Q10: Can fans expect more collaborations between you and Effy in the future?
Michael Light: I never thought this reunion would happen. Neither did she honestly. You never know. Though, I know her direction for 2025 is quite different than any of our work together so I’ve heard she tapped Dubstep to produce a track or two. I can’t remember the details. I just know it’s not the direction I’m use to when producing. Never say never I suppose.
Q11: What was the atmosphere like in the studio?
Michael Light: Tense at times. We’re both perfectionists— and we both have different views of what “perfect” is. So there’s clashing for sure. Though, I feel like our fighting truly brings out the best in both of us.
Q12: How did you approach production differently this time around?
Michael Light: We embraced more layered and atmospheric sounds. I have to say the style isn’t so much different as it is evolved.
Q13: Did you and Effy discuss the legal issues at any point during production?
Michael Light: We kept the focus on the music. Discussions were made prior to any sort of reunion.
Q14: What role do you think this album will play in Effy’s legacy?
Michael Light: It’s a defining moment. Fans will appreciate the callback to many genres we’ve tapped into.
Q15: Any final thoughts on End Of This World?
Michael Light: It was a lot of fun. I’m honored to have been part of it. Wish it wasn’t so rushed. Personally I think she should have rolled this out next year. I would have liked “Discovery” as the lead single, with “Russian Spy” (because of its Fun With A Nun shock value style), and then “Cruel II”. Though I respect she’s transforming next year and wanted to close 2024 with this love letter to her 15 year career.
Effy Giraffe also agreed to a sit down, excitedly discussing the new release.
Q&A: Effy Giraffe
Q1: What inspired you to finally release a sequel to Out Of This World?
Effy Giraffe: It felt like the right time. A year after Out Of This World released, it was rumored a sequel album titled Inhabitant would be set to release in 2016. The rumor was only slightly true. After Out Of This World released we did record quite a few demos for a sequel album, we dubbed it Inhabitant. We then moved on and started working on The Greatest: The Complete Hits Collection as I wanted to retire I saw the success of my last album at the time, and I wanted to close my career on top. So it’s crazy to think a decade later I would finally be dropping a sequel album to Out Of This World.
Q2: How did it feel working with Michael Light again?
Effy Giraffe: I knew it was the right thing to do. Continuing an era that was hugely successful in part due to Michael’s production couldn’t have happened without him.
Q3: What does “End Of This World” mean to you?
Effy Giraffe: I think the deepest meaning for me. It’s truly an end to everything that once was. 2025 you’ll see a new me, something that’s quite different. Which is why I felt this had to release this year next year is a rebirth of sorts.
Q4: Why cover “Rhiannon”?
Effy Giraffe: It’s a song I’ve loved for years. I did Seven Wonders for The Greatest. So I’m a Fleetwood Mac fan and wanted to do a song that I loved. I knew the album had to have a cover. We did I’m Free on Out Of This World so choosing one cover was a must.
Q5: How did you decide on the tracklist?
Effy Giraffe: Each song tells a story, and together they create a journey. I wanted to include other worldly aspects, which is why I made sure to reference aliens with a few callbacks to Out Of This World
Q6: What was the most challenging song to record?
Effy Giraffe: Cruel II actually
Q7: Can you explain the significance of “Cruel II”?
Effy Giraffe: The first Cruel was featured on Beginning of the End. It was widely pointed out to me it didn’t follow the overall theme of the album — which is true. There was a lost demo that we never got around to finishing, and instead of finishing that demo, we created the version you hear on Beginning of the End. When we were working on End Of The Beginning we did plan on finishing the Cruel demo, but we never did in time. We finally finished it after End Of The Beginning released. We considered releasing a dual album compilation featuring both Beginning of the End and End of the Beginning with bonus tracks, including Cruel. Though instead, I dropped it as a single randomly, and we decided to attach it to this album as a nod to the synth-wave genre I explored.
Q8: Fans have wondered if the legal dispute is resolved. Can you comment?
Effy Giraffe: I’d rather focus on the album for now.
Q9: How did Elliot Light’s piano contributions influence the album?
Effy Giraffe: He brought an emotional depth that elevated the songs. From, My Past was an emotional song for me so I knew I had to have him involved. It was a lot of fun.
Q10: What’s your favorite track on the album?
Effy Giraffe: Honestly, probably Cruel II. One of the few Michael has no involvement in. It’s just so personal to me and honestly I think it’s my favorite song this year.
Q11: How do you feel about Out Of This World being unavailable on streaming?
Effy Giraffe: It’s unfortunate, but I hope fans embrace this new chapter. I’m going to see what I can do. I know it looks like YouTube music still carries the album regardless I’m gonna do my best to make it available.
Q12: What was the atmosphere like during recording?
Effy Giraffe: Intense, a lot passion, some days tension. I even reunited with Jamiya who sang on a From, My Past demo. We didn’t know if we wanted her to feature on the track instead we opted it be a solo track. She did provide background vocals though.
Q13: Can fans expect new music in 2025?
Effy Giraffe: certainly as you know my first single of the new year will release January 1, 2025. The single will be called Darkness Inside Of Me. Kicking off my darkest era yet.
Q14: How do you want fans to feel listening to End Of This World?
Effy Giraffe: Satisfied! I do hope this sequel album is everything they expected and more.
Effy Giraffe’s End Of This World will be available on Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon Music starting December 20, 2024. Don’t miss out on this long-awaited masterpiece!
