2022 Iconic photos
It has been two years since the accident where NBA player, Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi, along with others, died. The accident happened on January 26th, 2020. Many Angelinos and Kobe fans around the world felt heavy hearted when hearing this news. People come together at what was the Staple Center (Crypto.com Arena) to celebrate the life Kobe had lived and the legacy he left behind. This year an artist created a statue in honor of Kobe and the nine victims that lost their lives that day. The statue is of Kobe in a Lakers number 24 jersey and his Daughter Gianna Bryant wearing her uniform holding a basketball. On the statue’s base you can find the name of the victims and a quote reading “ Heroes come and go but legends are forever.” Fans visited the statue, taking photos and leaving flowers. Artist Dan Medina says he intended the statue to be shared with family and friends but later decided to place it at the site where the helicopter went down.  The City of Calabasas has decided not to keep the statue at the crash site. Medina plans to create a life-size version of the statue and find it a permanent home. Photos are important in keeping peoples’ memories alive and that is the reason why this photo is so important. Not only do we have a photo of this event that happened two years ago but we have an updated version that people can celebrate. Using the hashtags #KobeBryant and #MambaForever on Twitter and Instagram you can see how many peoples’ lives have been affected by the loss of this legend.

In January 2022 the people of Tonga experienced a tsunami on their small islands. Satellites captured outstanding imagery of a Volcano erupting in the South Pacific Ocean. The New York Times reported that families on the main island of Tongatapu described that evening a “...frightening scene. Thick clouds. A storm of black rocks pelting buildings, bouncing off cars like marbles on tile.” The volcano's sonic boom could be heard as far as alaska. The New York Times also reported that two surfers had died and oil was spilled in Peru. The volcanic cloud spread as far as 300 miles. Before satellite connection went down people on the islands took to social media showing videos of the catastrophic event. On all social platforms Tonga’s Volcanic explosion was trending. Anyone from news reporters to a typical user were showing us the images of what had just taken place. The videos captured by the space satellite show us an angel that would not be possible without this type of technology. The University of Auckland’s Professor Shane Cromin tells CNN that there could be multiple reasons for the Tsunami that followed the explosion. Professor Cromin says the atmospheric waves hit the ocean's surface creating giant waves. With large amounts of pressurised gas, the magma became unstable and caused an eruption. Ashes quickly covered the islands and put those living there at risk. Resources were sent over in hope to help those suffering injuries and to assist with all the damages. The image we see is a once in a millennium event for the Tong volcano.
