Diversity of Gobies (Actinopterygii, Gobiiformes) in the Rupnarayan River, West Bengal, India
Abstract
A total of 16 species under 13 genera in 4 families of Gobiiformes have been recorded from the Rupnarayan river. Of these Bostrychus sinensis is being reported for the first time from Indian mainland and Bathygobius ostreicola is being recorded for the first time from West Bengal. Four species viz., Acentrogobius viridipunctatus, Butis butis, Taenoides buchanani and Taenioides cirratus are being reported for the first time from Purba Medinipur district and 14 species viz., Acentrogobius viridipunctatus, Apocryptes bato, Bathygobius ostreicola, Boleophthalmus boddarti, Bostrychus sinensis, Butis butis, Butis koilomatodon, Eleotris fusca, Eleotris melanosoma, Odontamblyopus rubicundus, Periophthalmus modestus, Pseudapocryptes elongatus, Taenoides buchanani and Taenioides cirratus are being reported for the first time from Rupnarayan river. Periopthalmus weberi appears to have gone locally extinct in this River.

Introduction
Gobiiformes, the gobies and their relatives, is one of the world's most varied vertebrate lineages with over 2200 species distributed under more than 200 genera (Nelson et al., 2016). Gobies are found in tropical and subtropical waters, especially on coral reefs and estuaries and only 10% of which are found in freshwater (Helfman et al., 2009). Although some species are consumed by man mostly these are prey of economically valuable fish species. Some species are also valuable as ornamental fish (Patzner et al., 2012). Chatterjee and Mishra (2012) reported 174 gobioid species under 69 genera from India of which 45 species under 37 genera are found in Sundarbans of West Bengal (Chatterjee et al., 2013) and 23 species have been recorded so far from Purba Medinipur district (Jayram, 1981; Chatterjee et al., 2000; Yennawar et al., 2015, 2017; Payra et al., 2018; Hossain et al., 2019; Pahari et al., 2020; Khan and Mandal, 2024). Yennawar et al. (2017) and Chatterjee et al. (2000) recorded 14 and 9 species of gobies respectively from the coastal region of Digha, Purba Medinipur district, whereas, Payra et al. (2018) and Khan and Mandal (2024) each have reported 4 species of gobies from Egra and Ramnagar of this district. While Hossin et al. (2019) recorded Butis koilomatodon from Sankarpur, Sit et al. (2020) recorded Glossogobius giuris and Stigmatogobius sadanundio from Purba Medinipur district. River Rupnarayan, however, has remained rather unexplored in this regard. Gobiids recorded so far from this river are Periopthalmus weberi, G. guiris and S. sadanundio as reported by Jayram (1981), Ghorai (2018) and Pahari et al. (2020) respectively. Under such backdrop the present study on the diversity of order Gobiiformes of the Rupnarayan River, which constitutes the eastern border of Purba Medinipur district, was under taken.

Een brasem uit het bos
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3543bbe6aca2e35b8e40581db7d32088/tumblr_inline_p87dmiBrX91r6tvhj_540.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f07d331d1b6659f5bb4036403bc1f848/tumblr_inline_p87dmv34Ip1r6tvhj_540.jpg)

Within the Cuban province of Matanzas, a venture achieves its sustainability in concord with the atmosphere and utilizing invasive forest species such because the marabou.
HAVANA TIMES – The Libre Imagen (free picture), Artwork y Conservation workshop is an initiative that integrates the rules and practices of permaculture with artwork and well-liked schooling. It rescues the pure, historic and creative values of the locality for the harmonious growth of the neighborhood.
The venture is situated 174 kilometers from Havana, in Batey Mario Lopez, Playa Larga, Cienaga de Zapata. It’s led by Susana Guevara Barrero, Visible Arts teacher, and Lazaro Ramon Sosa Morell, theater teacher.
Like many initiatives of this kind, Libre Imagen additionally struggled with the seek for a sustainable different. That’s how they started to hold out carpentry and handicraft work utilizing invasive wooden species. They promote work and engravings that join and re-signify pure, historic and creative values of the realm.
Guevara Barrero says the primary aim of the venture is to assist develop the neighborhood, harmoniously built-in with the character of the Cienaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve.

The kid was awarded within the “Yo cenaguero” Contest, organized by the Cienaga de Zapata Neighborhood Transformations venture, ECOVALOR Cienaga, and the Free Picture Workshop.
Our imaginative and prescient is to revitalize the appreciation and creation of native aesthetic values for historical past, nature and artwork. In follow we combine that imaginative and prescient and the aim within the work processes.
The carpentry and handicraft enterprise with woods of invasive and launched species, such because the marabou (Dichrostachys cinérea), the cayeput (Melaleuca leucadendron L.), the casuarina (Casuarina equisetifolia) and the yarúa, (Caesalpinia cubensis) display this work ”, explains Guevara.
Invasive forest species displace native native and endemic vegetation occupying their residing house. Earnings from carpentry and wooden crafts enable the venture to logistically maintain environmental schooling processes locally.
As caring for the atmosphere is essentially the most important side for the Libre Imagen group, methods are drawn as much as step by step change felled invasive timber with native species. To do that, they use strategies primarily based on the moral rules of permaculture. Caring for the land and other people, conserving the soil, forests and water, in addition to the honest distribution of pure assets.
Ties with the neighborhood
The hyperlink with the neighborhood happens by the venture’s exercise plan. Persons are built-in in workshops, as facilitators, listeners, managers, or employees. Along with offering job alternatives and coaching, Libre Imagen assumes duty to advertise feminine participation.
“Within the Ciénaga de Zapata coexists a kind of affiliation of men and women of science, biologists, chicken watchers, geographers, ichthyofauna specialists, botanists, artists and academics. For a few years they’ve carried out analysis work in several ecosystems. They facilitate and pave the way in which in the direction of a tradition of conservation and sustainable growth within the Cienaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve,” notes Guevara.

The Cayeput Hostal enterprise, within the Ciénaga de Zapata, is essentially the most related expertise on the native degree within the administration of Melaleuca 1.
Among the many routine actions of Libre Imagen are the cleansing of the shoreline, gathering strong waste, making wall work, oil work and acrylic on canvas, pyrography, portray, drawing, workshops and talks.
The dynamics slowed down with the pandemic and now embrace the design and preparation of interpretive signage for trails created by the Firm for the Conservation of the Zapata Swamp (ECOCIENZAP). The venture turns a part of its promotional work to social networks, so as to unfold and promote nature conservation.
Just a little historical past
Free Picture, Artwork and Conservation emerged 14 years in the past on the Nicolas Guillen Batista Faculty of Artwork Instructors, in Camagüey, 540 kilometers from Havana. At the moment it didn’t go by this title.
In its beginnings it aspired to turn out to be a youngsters’s theater firm, with components of environmental schooling. Little by little, it targeted on the environmentalist strategy and the preparation of individuals from the neighborhood.
In the summertime of 2015, with the assistance of the Cienaga de Zapata Neighborhood Transformations venture, in collaboration with the Swiss NGO Zunzún and the headquarters of the Ministry of Science, Know-how and Surroundings (CITMA) for Matanzas, they participated in assortment of strong wastes on the coast.
They then developed coaching and educating of agroecological instruments to small teams of decorative plant growers and artisans within the area.
“We obtained coaching in permaculture, venture design and administration, biodiversity and conservation, invasive species administration, well-liked environmental schooling, strong waste administration, sustainable tourism and environmental interpretation for native guides,” says Lazaro Sosa Morell. He describes this second because the set off to evolve the idea and title that Libre Imagen it has in the present day.
