“A good life is when you smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realize how blessed you are for what you have” . . (#SouthernRoots: We take so much for granted in our everyday lives... waking up and having a roof over our heads, clean clothes to put on, food in the pantry and fridge, a job to go to, good health to exercise, family and friends to support, love and care about us, and a safe place to rest our head at night to rejuvenate us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to be able to get up and do it all over again the next day. And then along comes a disaster, a tragedy...something that reminds us that life is indeed short and we should appreciate every day we’re given. The total devastation in parts of the Bahamas caused by Hurricane Dorian is one such wake up call. And so are the tragic events on this day 18 years ago, September 11, 2001. We shouldn’t need such tragedies to remind us to be thankful for what we have. And yet we do. It’s easy to find things to complain about in our everyday lives. But instead of seeing the glass as half-empty, it would do us all good to see the glass as half-full instead, to find something positive in each day. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to take McKethan on one of our favorite walks. The reason why isn’t important, but trying to remain positive during the waiting period was a struggle for an impatient person like myself. Maybe these periods of time when I’m “benched” from getting to do things I love are to remind me to not take them for granted and appreciate these “simple pleasures” even more. I think Mac was as happy as I was to be out there again. It might take us a while to get back to the level of fitness we were at originally, but I choose to look at it in a positive light and accept the challenge before me. You know what they say...every journey begins with a single step.
