i need to post my smtv rambles on here instead of keeping them to twitter but was replaying CoC and i find the scene after the Surt boss fight how Dazai comments on Koshimizu's willingness to listen to other people's opinions as a sign of poor confidence in his own leaderships. I feel like it really informs you on what dazai views as a "strong leader"...

like, in CoC Koshimizu is anything but uncertain about his leadership. He's definitely confident and assured in his choices, but he's also willing to encourage his subordinates to develop their own thoughts and opinions on their situation (which aligns with his whole Myriad Gods ambition). To many people that's actually a sign of a strong leader, but for Dazai to think the opposite is a really good characterisation point for him.

At the start of the game he makes a throwaway comment about how he's always caught between his parents who dislike each other, and how he can never make the right choice, as whoever he sides with will always end up with the other parent angry at him. He doesn't trust himself to ever make a right decision, and he'd rather have someone who's driven and self-assured make the choice for him. He's not at risk of upsetting people then, because it's not him who's deciding, it's someone else - someone strong who will brush away any protests.

Dazai wants to be in the "right" for once. He wants to be absolutely right and beyond reproach, and Abdiel offers him that because she is so certain that she is always right and absolute. He doesn't want someone telling him to think about his decision and decide for himself if it's right or wrong - he wants someone to decide for him to take the responsibility out of his own hands.

I'm rambling, really, but I just found it funny that Dazai of all people accused Koshimizu of "lacking confidence", and it sent me down a thinky rabbit hole. I know its a meme to dunk on Dazai (and for good reason, That Scene alone from CoC is fucking hilarious despite it trying to be serious), but I genuinely do like Dazai as a character and think he's a really good Law rep bc:

He represents the kind of person who's craving for guidance, and that desperation and fear of being hated or looked down upon for never picking the right choice makes him so easy to be swept up in Abdiel's wake. Idk. I just think it's cool.

To be honest, I think the reason I love Ichiro Dazai so much as a character is that he was the best part of the original SMTV. His development from a naïve kid trying to make a name for himself and prove himself to others to becoming a religious zealot as a means to attach to something secure.

SMTV Vengeance lets him take a bigger role in the story after his switch and gives more context on that side of the story onto why. He feels like he doesn't deserve anything. His friends are only his friends as his parents are rich and everyone sees him as a nuisance.

He spends most of the game trying to help the main cast, but they often brush him aside or lash out onto him. His only support figure is Abdiel, who begins to like him for his motivation and desires. Mastema was the final push onto his transformation. I really love the way he feels realistic.

I love Ichiro Dazai as a character because he feels like the most realistic person in the setting of SMTV; he feels isolated. He's scared of the new world around him, so he latches onto the one person who he feels might keep him safe then parrots her views as his own.

Amabie's Bromide Reactions

Amabie's sidequest requires you to give her photograph to a student; if you don't go back to the school before things go to hell, the only one who can accept it is the guy who hangs around the dorm roof. That happened to me, so I figured I'd record the other students for posterity (this was a Canon of Creation playthrough, so I don't know if you can give it to Yoko).

Miyazu: Huh? A present? But why me...? [...] O-Oh, wow...! This is so cute! [...] That gleam in her eyes is a really nice touch! And her hair is so sleek... [...] (voice line gasps) Huh? It's some kind of good-luck charm for staying healthy? [...] That's... why you gave it to me...? [...] I'm... I'm glad. Really, really glad. I promise I'll treasure it.

Tao: Huh? Is this for me? [...] Pfft! Hahahaha! [...] Oh, sorry, sorry! I'm not making fun of it! I just didn't expect this kinda thing from you, that's all... [...] You've got some interesting tastes, you know that...? Maybe I'll stick this in my planner. [...] (voice line of "Thank you.") Heehee... Thanks!

Ichiro: For real? I can have this? Nice! [...] (voice line of "Seriously?") ...Wait, what even is this? Some kinda... froggy mascot? [...] Uh... Why'd you give this to me? [...] Don't tell me... you just wanted a reason for us to talk? [...] (voice line "Hey, come on.") Aw, c'mon, man! You don't need to be all indirect about it! We're friends! We can talk whenever you want! [...] Naw, but I get it. You've got all the popular kids in your class, right? Hard to just walk up and start talkin'. [...] (voice line "Hey.") But you can talk to me any time, y'know? I don't need any presents or whatever. [...] ...Anyhow, now that I look at this froggy thing... It's actually kinda cool. Got a real unique style to it. Yuzuru: ...Uh... sorry, but what IS this? Some character from TV or something? I don't really follow what's popular these days... [...] Oh, it's a spirit that brings good luck? And you want me to have this? [...] Well, in that case, thanks. I'll gladly take it. [...] It's kind of like this bracelet I wear, huh? That's a good luck charm too. [...] Feels like I've only ever wished for one thing. And now, I'll have your charm on my side for a little extra luck. [...] Haha, who knows? Maybe your spirit will grant that wish of mine.

I like the little bit of characterization from everyone. I wound up giving it to Miyazu because she liked the picture even before she knew it was a good luck charm. I don't recall Yuzuru ever mentioning the bracelet anywhere else. Ichiro's so starved for attention that he doesn't see the significance, and Tao is grateful for a gift from a friend without really looking at it. And we get a little bit of how V-kun is seen; he's serious enough that Tao doesn't think Amabie fits his image.
