okay, about my Straw Hat!Ichiji AU, time to talk about Ichiji's bond and dynamics with the other Straw Hats
Luffy Ichiji is very loyal to his captain. He got a little fond of Luffy already at the Baratie and was impressed that Luffy tried to argue and negotiate with Zeff (something that's considered near impossible) about his debt. Luffy managed to open up Ichiji a little and got a glimpse of his true self.
When Ichiji points out that despite Gold Roger being a legend, there's very little archived records of his adventures. Ichiji's dream is to write and archive a large book of chronicles of the next Pirate King. Luffy recognizes his literary talent and offers Ichiji to become his archivist.
Through their journey together, Ichiji holds Luffy in high regards and respects him deeply. The events of WCI only solidifies his loyalty and respect for his captain, who came to Whole Cake to save him and Sanji.
Zoro Ironically, Ichiji gets along with Zoro just fine, compared to his little brother. He also thinks that Zoro looks like a marimo, but he leaves that unsaid as Sanji bickers the most with Zoro.
Ichiji finds Zoro refreshing to talk with and Zoro appreciates Ichiji's calm nature, he views Ichiji as a sane counterpart to Sanji. They respect each other as nakama. Ichiji strongly suspect something between Zoro and his little brother, but keeps this to himself as he truly wants to see them get their act together.
Both of them are responsible and protective in their own ways (Zoro, for nakama and ichiji, for his brother). But there is some friction they don't really address. Zoro is aware that Ichiji (and Sanji)'s past is a subject Ichiji never talks about and he has strong suspicions that Ichiji being an "overbearing, protective brother" to Sanji is a sign that he's compensating for something. Ichiji, on the other hand, not only envy Zoro for his strength and dedication to the crew, but also for his strong bond with Sanji.
Ichiji always refers to Zoro as "Roronoa" (as he thinks that calling Zoro by first name is too personal). As for Zoro, he just settles nicknames such as "nerd", "brainiac" or foureyes" (Ichiji never minds while Sanji takes full offense at this).
Nami Ichiji isn't over the moon-attracted and lovestruck by Nami like Sanji, but he admits her beauty and thinks she's just as pretty as she's clever.
His opinion on Nami improves at Arlong Park arc, when he sees Nami's burden and sacrifice for her village. He's reminded of his deal with Judge in the past, enduring six months of agony and pain in exchange for Sanji's freedom (a deal that Judge never honored, similar to Nami's deal with Arlong) and he is fast to understand that Arlong never intended on keeping his word. He also knows that Nami must ask for their help before they can intervene.
While he never mentions any details or names, Ichiji tells Nami a little about the "sacrifice" he made for Sanji and tells her that asking for help when she needs it isn't something to be ashamed for and in fact, he admires her strength and dedication to save a whole village while he only aimed to save a beloved brother.
Nami both like and respect Ichiji as her equal and nakama. She admires Ichiji's skills in writing and calculating and often asks for his opinion when she's drawing her charts. Nami also have a habit to play with Ichiji's long hair (his red hair reminds her of Belle-Mere).
During their adventures...which is basically everyday, Ichiji focuses on securing some treasure and always hands it over to appease Nami to stay on her good side. Nami, who never says no to some exta Berry or treasure, always calls Ichiji her best friend.
Also to note, Ichiji is always invited to Nami and Robin's "girls' nights". Something that makes his little brother seethe everytime (lmao). Ichiji is kinda a permanent honorary guest at their girls' nights and he always returns to his crew with new hairstyles and painted nails.
Usopp Usopp was very intimidated by Ichiji at their first meeting, mostly due to Ichiji being irritated over Sanji taking over his waiter duties at the Baratie (because his little brother started to fawn over Nami) and his usual stoic personality. He changes his mind when Ichiji commits to his proper waiter duties and actually asks the guys (neglected by Sanji) what they'd like to have.
Usopp is very surprised to see Ichiji has joined them, not really aware of his role on the crew. Usopp originally took a little offense of Ichiji writing their chronicles, due to the sniper being a "master storyteller". Ichiji is fast to settle this down by telling that he's only putting their stories in ink and while Usopp is a great storyteller, he also want people to believe them and Usopp, sadly, doesn't have the best track record for credibility.
Ichiji serves as another older brother figure for Usopp, even straight up telling him that it's okay being afraid because courage is born from defying fear, not the absense from it. Usopp is also vaguely aware that Ichiji has self-worth issues that he refuses to speak about.
Chopper Ichiji was the only one who recognized Chopper as a reindeer at their first meeting. Despite this, Chopper was a little wary around Ichiji, even after he joined the Straw Hats. Ichiji respected this and decided to let Chopper befriend him when he was ready.
Chopper quickly warmed up to Ichiji, after he demonstrated how far he was willing to go for his brother and his nakama. Ichiji tells Chopper that he doesn't have to trust him if he doesn't want to, but to let him earn his trust.
Chopper knows that Ichiji is physically different, due to being genetically modified. They agreed to never leave it between then, as a patient-doctor agreement. They have in common that they technically belong to a certain race, but still different from their peers (Ichiji, for being an advanced human because of Germa and Chopper, who's a reindeer/human Devil Fruit user).
Ichiji is very fond of Chopper and treats him like a cute little brother, although a little wistfully as he remembers his younger brothers at Germa (and secretly laments their lost humanity).
Nico Robin Ichiji, like Zoro, was very suspicious of Robin when she joined. While he acknowledge that she, like Nami, is pretty, he decided to not let it cloud his judgment, in contrast to Sanji who fawned over her. Instead, he remained cold and stoic until Robin proved that she was trustworthy.
He later warmed up to Robin and they shared many common interest, such as ancient knowledge. Ichiji often consults with Robin regarding his work with the Straw Hat Chronicles and asks her to proofread his drafts before he can put it in ink.
This friendship is tested during the Enies Lobby Arc, where Ichiji is constantly reminded of himself when faced with Robin's difficulties. Ichiji sees his own self-worth issues reflect in Robin and decides to save her as well. After the events, he had formed a strong bond with Robin. They hold each other in high regard.
It's implied that Ichiji have a little crush on Robin, but he isn't sure if it's genuine love or just platonic.
Franky Ichiji didn't hold Franky in high regards when they first met, due to the meeting was a result of the Franky Family beating up Usopp and stealing their money for a new ship. He was downright furious, questioning if they had morals or even a conscience for what they did to his friend.
Ichiji remained rather cold towards Franky through the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. They have a smaller confrontation post-Robin's rescue, where Ichiji lays on why he hasn't warmed up to him, like the other Straw Hats has; Ichiji is having flashbacks to Germa (he doesn't tell about Germa, but refers to it without mentioning names) where he suffered non-consentual body modifications and surgeries. Franky being a cyborg gave him mild PTSD flashbacks and he kept his distance because he was afraid that Franky would take offense.
This confrontation causes Ichiji to open up about his "power" (Sparkling Red, but it's unnamed during this time) and he doesn't know how to control it. Ichiji is afraid that it'll go out of control, due to his overwhelming feelings, and accidently hurt someone he cares about. Franky, moved by Ichiji putting his trust in him, promises to help him to figure out how to control his power.
Thereafter, Ichiji regularly meets with Franky who creates support gear that can restrict his power and let him control it. Franky is a little enamorad by Ichiji's smile.
Similar to his situation with Robin, Ichiji harbors very fond feelings towards Franky. But once again, he isn't sure if it's romantic or platonic love.
Brook At their first meeting, Brook mistook Ichiji for a woman due to his androgynous appearences (aka his pretty face and his long, red hair in a braid) and asked to see his panties. Ichiji took this seemingly well, calling Brook a joker...until he delivered a swift kick to Brook's head and calmly said that he was a man, thus no panties. Brook apologizes which Ichiji accepted.
Ichiji was mildly annoyed by Brook, but quickly found that they shared common interests as well. Ichiji enjoys an interllectual conversation and they have creative hobbies (Brook, music. Ichiji; writing). They often drink tea with Robin and are dubbed as the "Classy Trio".
Jinbei Ichiji wasn't sure what to think of Jinbei when they first met, due to the fact that the only fishmen he had met previously was Arlong and his gang. And Ichiji didn't have a too flattering image of fishmen because of their actions. He befriended Jinbei pretty fast, though and thought him as a good ally.
After the WCI events, where Jinbei officially joins the crew, Ichiji expressed his eternal gratitude for the fishman's actions and regards Jinbei as one of his closest friends.
Both of them enjoys a good conversation and Ichiji appreciates every moment of wisdom Jinbei offers.
Straw Hats in general Ichiji loves the Straw Hats as his family, even if he doesn't physically express his emotions like Sanji can. He has a lot of brothers and sisters, and he cherishes every moment with them.
He enjoys to tease them a little, especially the younger ones. Ichiji comes with a lot of witty and sarcastic remarks. He isn't afraid to speak his mind and is very honest with his nakama (with the exception of his Germa past). His stoic expressions along with reflective glasses gives the straw hats the "unreadable expression" impression from him and Ichiji uses this to his advantage, playing pranks on them...until he smiles and reveals that everything was just a "sensible deception". (aka, he trolled them XD)
The Straw Hats really loves Ichiji as much as they love Sanji. He's a valued crew member, one of their strongest fighters and a mature older brother figure for the younger ones. They all know that Ichiji has self-worth issues and dehumanizes himself quite often, but then the just double down on the love and friendship.

um hey Nami/Reiju would be such a valid ship, like:
- Nami the Hugest Lesbian
- who would be so protective of Sanji at first. They all know that in her heart, Reiju is kind, but she’s still the One Who Stayed, who could only bandage but never prevent, who chose to side with the violence for the sake of self-preservation
- but Nami also knows a thing or two about looking like the bad guy, so she’s sympathetic. Sanji doesn’t blame Reiju, so neither does Nami—plus she saved Luffy’s life.
- and now Reiju
- I fully believe vying for beautiful women is genetically programmed into all Vinsmoke children
- Reiju who is so grateful for her baby brother’s crew mates, particularly this lovely little lady
- Nami, who often looks scared and wary, but marches into battle anyways for her friends, for the sake of doing the right thing
- can you imagine Reiju learning about Nami’s past, perhaps on one quiet and tentative evening bonding with Sanji, sharing a glass of wine
- Nami, who found the strength, as a CHILD, to stand between her beloved village and Arlong. Who couldn’t have the Cocoyashi villagers killing themselves to rescue her, not when she was gonna rescue THEM. Who took up the mantle of the bad guy with no thought at all, because she knew what was important, what she wanted to protect with all her heart.
- can you imagine Reiju CRYING, just finding herself suddenly wracked by these choking sobs, breath unable to pass
- because this incredible woman, as a girl, had been able to do what Reiju never could. Because Reiju had given in to the fear, had shut away all the unhappiness and heartache she ever felt in order to hide from the pain.
- can you imagine Nami finding out, and telling Reiju, quietly, about all the bad things she’s seen, she’s done, she’s let happen as a teenage girl stealing from the world. She asks if Reiju can absolve her of the guilt of throwing other people under the bus, young pirates, old pirates, everybody with stories and pasts that she didn’t care about. She hated all pirates once. She may have never slit a throat, but she’s certainly left people on a sinking ship. Can Reiju forgive that girl for putting her own safety first, when cast into a bad situation?
- Reiju says yes, she can easily absolve a child. But Poison Pink is not a child, hasn’t been one for ages. She’s known, all the while, what standing with Germa 66 means, and yet she stayed, feet planted in those goddamn raid boots. Surely she can’t be absolved of that.
- no, Nami agrees. But if Nami’s learned anything from making a career out of backstabbing, it’s that there’s really no such thing as absolution. There’s certainly forgiveness from person to person, but no one is ever wholly “absolved” because no one is ever everything to everyone. All you can do is figure out whom you want to forgive you, and work toward that.
- and if you’re lucky enough to love a brother like Sanji-kun, she would add, he’d have already forgiven you.
- so not to sound cheesy or anything, but what it really comes down to is can you forgive yourself.
- can you? Reiju asks Nami, quietly and with so much on the line.
- most days, yes, is Nami’s proud answer. But on the days you can’t...
- well, on the days you can’t, you make sure to feed a little slice of mikan to Luffy. You make sure to shift Zoro’s swords out of kicking range from exiting the cabin door (you with your cat burglar hands are the only one who can do it so silently, Zoro doesn’t shift in his sleep). You make sure to check in on Usopp’s new experiments and inventions. You make sure to thank Sanji for the delicious afternoon tea.
- you praise Chopper’s work ethic. You tell Robin about the most recent novel you read and ask for recommendations. You bring Franky a chilled bottle of coke and take one of his many sea-faring bikes out for a spin. You point to a place on an old world map and challenge Brook to play a song from that region. You cuddle with Carrot in between her wrestling bouts with Luffy. You pay it forward, is her point, to the Nakama you treasure, every little gesture as a self-aware vow, “I promise I won’t betray you, not like I did before.”
- Reiju is unconvinced. Death, it seemed to her, was the easiest compensation. Why else would the world have death penalties? In death, there was no risk of a second betrayal. There was no risk of going back to that cool mask of Poison Pink. No risk to her, no risk to others.
- Nami getting ticked, as she does at anyone who throws away their life. She reminds herself this is not an unknowing child though, but a grown woman who has survived an incredibly violent life. How EASY it was for Ichiji, Niji, Yonji, who had someone else handily cut the humanity out of them. Reiju had to do it herself, and if left messy scars.
- I held onto life because I had something to protect, Nami says. I had people I loved and a dream I wanted to fulfill no matter what. You... you’ve got to find that.
- I’m a human weapon crafted for war, Reiju answers with no trace of self-pity whatsoever, sounding instead bewildered. I’m a mercenary. Sure, I would like to protect Sanji, but even you would admit that’s a rare chance to be had.
- ...it’s a process.
- and then Nami snaps her fingers, an idea coming to mind.
- a mercenary, huh? You take any job for money?
- we may be evil, Reiju says carefully, but we still have a code.
- then how about I hire you for a job?
- if any of the Strawhats witnessed this moment, their jaws would be on the floor, seeing Nami willingly fork over money. Reiju just looks bemused.
- the job is to go protect someone who needs it. It can be anybody. Just... you’re so strong Reiju, and you can do so much. Germa’s already taken so much of your life, I would hate to see them ruin the rest.
- cue Reiju’s arc of self-discovery, figuring out what she likes, what she wants, what she cares about. She admires Sanji so much for his passion in cooking, Nami for her passion in cartography. She wants something like that for herself so, so bad.
- (maybe she becomes a rare amphibian conservationist. All those poisonous frogs 🐸 , and the slimy bastards remind her somewhat-fondly of her stupid brothers-minus-Sanji.)
- anyways omg, Nami giving Reiju job after job like, “go give someone a present they didn’t expect,” or, “go give someone comfort in a moment of need.”
- Nami’s growing love for this weird, beautiful, poison-drinking older lady who wants to not want to die so badly. She also gets to delight in Reiju always coming back, to see Sanji sure, but also to see her specifically. Reiju develops a habit of bringing back presents: advance tech, old maps, weather gadgets, canned oranges from different islands. Nami gets someone as fixated on GIVING her things as Sanji is, but some of Reiju’s presents make her blush.
- omg, Nami giving Reiju a map to Cocoyashi village. “Go give someone a hug for me.” Reiju and Nojiko bonding over the bonfire that is Nami, saving both their lives.
Wow anyways this can go on and on but!!! Even Sanji would ship it!!! God, he’d be so stressed out about who to give the shovel talk to, ‘cause that’s his sister but also that’s ~Nami-swan~ but in the end he just ends up talking Reiju out of shovel-talking herself and encourages both of them to go for what they want.

Zosan ( vinsmoke family),6. If you have time
hello anon
thanks for sending me an ask! it was an interesting idea. and apparently i accidentally gone haywire and wild with said prompt. i only planned to write a short drabble at around 1k words at first, but apparently i ended up making a complete 4.9k fic with the idea because i was so into it.
i hope you enjoyed!
“pretend family”
[ao3]
“Explain it to me again - whydo we need to pretend to be married?” Sanji protested. There was a ring on hisfinger, matching the one on Zoro’s hand at that moment. The said man lookedjust as opposed to the idea.
“So Sanji’s dad won’t take himfor another marriage.” Luffy answered, his face looked serious for once. All ofthem knew Judge won’t do anything regarding Sanji anymore at this point, afterwhat has happened and his last statement back in Whole Cake Island.
“Yeah- I know… but why… him?!”
“Yeah- I know… but why… him?!”Sanji asked again, didn’t bother to protest the fact that the others mentionedJudge as his father.
“I never agreed to this as well!”Zoro shouted at Nami. “I was not even there!”
“But you owe me money and… we hadto roll with it somewhat,” Nami replied, resulting with an ‘ugh’ from Zoro.
“Naaami-saan…. I love you somuch, why do I have to be stuck with this Neanderthal for a husband?”
They had gotten Sanji back fromBig Mom a while back, and they had reunited with the others on Wano. Theirreunion was great. They had a party and everyone was happy. The truth thatSanji had a relation to the family of the Vinsmokes was a great shock to theentire crew. But for Sanji, none of that compared to the fact that in the midstof event, his nakamas had to blurt out that Sanji was engaged, nonetheless tothe certain bastard and so-called marimo.
The family of Vinsmoke hadapproached the Straw Hats before the crew set sail into their next destination.A dogeza coming from Vinsmoke Judgewas a surprising view.
During that time, Pudding wasabroad on Thousand Sunny for a while. Saying final good bye to the man whobaked together with her one last time.
And the memory was still clear asday in Sanji’s head.
“I can’t thank you enough,” theman that was once known as the might Garuda said, bowing down. “For saving mylife and my children.”
The scene was watched by everyoneclear as a crystal. It couldn’t be a fake. It was just as surprising.
However, in such situation, Sanjistayed silent. It was obvious the man was seeking for an apology from the manhe once called his son, and perhaps it was much too late to receive that. However, Sanji understood. He couldn’t bring himself to be angry at themforever, but it never meant that he could take the apology on his face.
After looking down at the kingfor a bit, Sanji walked away. Didn’t bother to deal with any of them and lethis friends to do the talking.
Reiju approached Luffypersonally, and said. “I would like to thank you for taking care of Sanji,”
Luffy, on his nature gave a replywith his signature laugh and smiled.
“He is our Cook.” He explainedhappily.
The rest of the crew started toturn away, about to get ready for the separation from Vinsmokes and Pudding.Meanwhile, Pudding was trying to shrug off the eyes of Yonji and Niji, whileheading to Sanji before the cook able to avoid every interaction by fleeing toThousand Sunny’s kitchen.
“Wait!” Pudding called, “Sanji-….san”
In an instant, everyone gone intowhite eyed again- none of them were used to that thing. As much as Sanji loveswomen, he couldn’t help but feel a chill on his spine whenever he was called byPudding.
“I would like to ask… perhaps inthe future, maybe we can…” Pudding began, and simply by hearing thosestatements broken hearts were flying out of Vinsmoke Yonji’s chest.
Pudding quickly turned into arealization of what she was doing, and corrected herself. “Not in the way youare thinking, you bastard! I don’t likeyou in that way…! Or, I mean… at all!”
Sanji could feel his sweatdropped comically for a second.
“It’s not a date request! Not atall! I mean- if maybe- in the future- we can- you know… bake together-” Puddingstarted to stutter. “No! I mean! I hate you! I truly hate you! I don’t want tosee your face again! I mean- I want to- meet you and… prove that I can makebetter cake than you!”
Sanji smiled, trying to stay trueto his gentleman nature. He wouldn’t ever reject a request from a ladyimpolitely. “I understand, Pudding-chan. We can meet again, and it’s okay- wedon’t have to be a married couple or-”
“M…Married!” Before Sanji could finish his sentences, Pudding wasalready dying.
Without skipping a beat, Sanjicontinued. “-anything. We can just meet up sometime in the future. And…”
Sanji started to mess up with hisown words, mainly because part of him was worried that Pudding was so close tofainting after losing blood. He never would’ve thought to ever see someone inhis daily situation.
“…And we don’t have to bemarried, or get married, or anything… because…”
As Pudding’s situation gotworsened, Sanji dropped his words completely, losing everything that wascomposed previously in his head. Rushing to help her standing up from herdizziness, only to get her situation worse. The rest were watching as he wasspeaking- including the Vinsmokes, making the situation far more awkward.
“…because…”
“…because Sanji already marriedin the beginning!” Nami quickly added in, and everyone’s eyes were instantly onher. Pudding’s three eyes were wide. Everyone was shocked, including Sanji- especially Sanji. A faint of blushappeared on his face as he wondered, isNami-san going to declare as my wife?
“Eh? I never knew that.” Nijicommented. “That Sanji could ever score with anyone- I never would’ve thoughtof that.”
“I didn’t know he already hadsomebody before the wedding.” Judge said.
“Perhaps he was scared that hiswife could be endangered.” Ichiji snickered. Reiju just gave a soft hum, smiledand then looked at Sanji.
“N-Nami-san-” Sanji began tostutter.
“I didn’t know that, Nami!”Chopper innocently shouted, together with equally surprised Carrot on his side.
Judge nodded and then said, “Isee… I guess I’ve been interfering too much.” Guilt was formed inside him, notthat the man would admit it any further. “May I meet whoever his spouse is?”
“Who is Sanji married to?” Carrotinnocently asked.
Sanji was not really into theidea of having the Germa any longer in his view, but he didn’t knew what to sayat all. But he was almost too eager to wait who Nami claimed as his wife.
Nami was sweating hard, she wasnot as good in lying as Usopp. She didn’t expect it to go as smoothly- shedidn’t even think it would get to be that far. Everyone’s eyes were then onher, and on reflex, she mouthed a name.
“Zoro.”
And Sanji’s world shattered.
The act was told and explained tothe rest of the crew, and Usopp had received a kick to his face because he waslaughing too hard.
Upon hearing Zoro’s name fromNami’s mouth, shock was in everyone’s faces. Laugh began to form from theVinsmoke brothers, only to get silenced by Reiju and Judge’s order aftermath.
They could always have rejectedJudge’s request to meet with Sanji’s husband- it would be so much easier. Theking didn’t demand to push the idea. However, the idea quite sparked interestfor the siblings. As much as they didn’t want to force Sanji to introduce themto his husband (because Judge’sorders), it was engraved clearly in their face.
Everyone was almost prepared tojust shrug it off. But the Vinsmokes were frozen on the spot, demanding a vocalanswer. Because Sanji wouldn’t say “Yes” or “No”, and decided to just leave.
Brook and Jinbei were the oneswho mentioned to just let them meet with Zoro, once and for all. Just in caseSanji’s father would pull anothermarriage event (They wouldn’t. Sanji knew they wouldn’t.). And so they talkedabout the consideration to the Garuda.
A brief little talk with Judge afterthat informed that he would like to invite all of the Straw Hat Pirates to hiskingdom- and treat them for food. In which sparked Luffy’s interest to the ideafurther.
And so they were stuck in thesituation they were in on that day. They had to meet up with the Vinsmokefamily in a specific area. Everyone has been dressing up for the occasion, notwanting to ruin the little talk- which Sanji wanted to get out as soon aspossible from.
Sanji sighed looking at the manthat stood beside him. “I don’t want to be stuck in this situation with you forlong,” Decided to fix the tie on Zoro’s outfit, he commented.
“Same here.” Zoro replied, flatly. “A dinner at a dumbass kingdom pretending to be your husband would beso boring.”
Sanji didn’t comment on thatstatement, he had to agree.
Let’s get this over with.
As soon as Thousand Sunnyapproached the gigantic ship-kingdom of Germa, everyone was gaping at the size.A kingdom carried by a lot of snails, floating across the sea. Sanji was theonly one with a bored look written all over his face- after all, he resentedcoming back to that place.
“So coooool!” Luffy screamed ashe looked from over the edge of Sunny.
“I’ve seen some of the snailsbefore…” Nami said. That was when they met with Yonji and Reiju, she recalled.“But I never would’ve thought to see they formed into a gigantic kingdom…”
Zoro’s mouth was opened wide, busy staring at the size of the thing.
As soon as the way has beenopened, there were maids and servants welcoming them to the inside of thecastle.
“Welcome to Germa 66, Lord Sanjiand Straw Hat Pirates.”
Luffy was filled with joy, andjumped in into the castle. Excited to explore it on and around. Meanwhile noneof the rest of the crew made a move; they were too amazed by the look of thething.
Zoro had to look at Sanji forre-clarify the statement, and returned to look at the entire thing. His mindwas lost in what was happening.
Sanji was mostly looked lazy, buthe wanted to get it over as soon as possible, so he stepped forward and walkedinside, as if it was a normal-looking house. As he walked in, the servantsbowed. Only to add more surprise element to everyone in the Sunny.
“Let’s get in, Marimo.”
Finally closing this mouth, Zororeturned to reality. Quickly followed after the Cook with a simple ‘tch’ aseveryone started to walk inside as well.
The dining room was grand- thatwas the first thing in their heads. Not even Vivi’s place was as grand as this,so they thought. And to think Sanji was supposed to be a Prince from this placeif only things were better for him blown their minds.
There were a lot of servants, andthere was a lot of food. Everyone enjoyed themselves to tiny bits, even thoughthey had to deal with the atmosphere in the room- because Sanji didn’t want tosay a thing.
Naturally, Zoro and Sanji were seatednext to each other. And the two do their activities in silence.
To their surprise, there was notmuch to be talked about. And it was resulting in awkwardness. Judge didn’t knowhow to properly start a talk, even though he was the one who decided to invitethe crew. Perhaps, he didn’t thought to get Sanji agreed that far.
It was awkward for the pair, especially with the gazes from the siblings and everyone else in the room. There were a few comments and questions coming from the Vinsmoke brotherstowards them, which Sanji simply ignored. And Zoro- who didn’t know what to doany better, stayed silent to as well.
The Vinsmoke brothers tried toflirt with Nami and Robin once they were bored. Robin just giggled softly asNami blatantly refused.
Zoro and Sanji’s handaccidentally met when they tried to grab for some tissues. Instantly, theypulled their hands away and blushed.
The rest of the dinner went onjust like that. Sanji, being the one who finished first (and quite fast atthat) stood up and excused himself to the nearby veranda outside for a smoke.
The room went silent as everyonewatched him go by, but nobody stopped Sanji from walking away. A few secondspassed, and Judge finally collected enough courage to ask Zoro a few things.
“So… Uh…”
There was a lot of awkwardness, and everyone could clearly see the slight homophobe in their tones- but theVinsmokes tried their best to conceal it. Trying their best to be polite andnot ruin his meeting with Sanji’s husband-after what he had done.
Judge decided to talk to Zoro, and Zoro only. Because in this situation he was supposed to be Sanji’s husband, and no one in the room had a nerve to interfere- continued to busyingthemselves with their own activities. Not even the Vinsmoke brothers dared togo against their father’s demand.
“So… how’s Sanji?”
Zoro took a gulp from his drinkbefore answering. “Hm… just normal.” As much as Zoro wanted to make an uglycomment about the Cook, he felt it was not the right situation for it.
“How did you two meet?”
“We’re nakama.” Another gulp. Both parties tried to keep their composure, and act as natural as possible. It was hardfor both of them.
“I see… that’s… kind of a stupidquestion.” Judge said. It was.“Anyway… I’m sorry, I never knew you were there and-” even if he did, he would’ve thought of ways to get rid of him. “I’mnot someone who deserved to be called as his father. And it was too late to askfor anything to fix it.”
Zoro listened. He didn’t knowwhat happened in Sanji’s past, and he didn’t really feel like asking about it.The king understood perfectly that he and Sanji should walk separate ways andnot think about the past- or be connected anymore at this point. But the guiltstayed, and it was killing him from the inside.
Even though he could never faceSanji, he should at least apologize to his family-even though they might not be into the idea, either.
Zoro understood the main idea, but… he couldn’t help to feel so out of place in this talk. Because, in firstplace- he was never been Sanji’s husband to begin with.
“I know I am not one to be sayingthese,” Judge said again. “Especially after everything I’ve done to that boy. Idon’t know how much he told you but…” Basicallynothing, Zoro thought. And it was not something he wanted to push fromSanji either. He was never the type who pries into someone’s problems, afterall. As Zoro take another drink, Judge continued. “That boy- man- now deservesgood things in his life.”
Judge looked at Zoro in his openeye, with a look that for once- looked like a proper father- not that Sanji wasthere to witness it- not that he would even cared either.
“Thank you to be with him.”
There was no answer coming fromZoro, not that Judge expected him to say anything. Zoro stood up, decided toleave the room for a break as well.
And perhaps, he could run to theCook and make him explaining- only if the man wanted to.
Zoro was not lost.
The castle was too big, that’sall. And there were so many similar and repetitive parts, almost made Zorothink he was passing the same hallway more than three times (or was he? Eitherway, once again it was not his fault- and he is not lost!).  Zoro continued walking, until he noticed oneof the walls looked a bit different than the other.
There was a crack- and it was nota big one. It looked old. It was a bit weird, considering the other parts ofthe kingdom was unscratched- always kept in good state. It was kind ofsurprising to see the wall was not fixed from the damage.
He could sense someone wascoming. And then, there was that familiar footsteps. Slow, calm, and contented.Zoro realized, even without looking who the owner of the footsteps was.
Sanji walked closer, only stoppedwhen he was stood beside Zoro. A lit cigarette placed in between of his lips. The man looked down to examine the same spot Zoro was looking.
He didn’t say anything for a bit, continued to stare into the dented wall in silence. Zoro couldn’t help but toexamine the serious, silent look in the cook’s face- it was almost looked tooforeign for him- but he couldn’t bring himself to say a word to break thesilence.
Several seconds passed, andfinally Sanji broke the silence with a question.
“So… what do you think aboutthem?”
The ‘Prince’ of Germa Kingdom turnedaway, walked to the opposite direction as he asked, started to look at thesmall alley nearby it.
“Just normal,” Zoro said, turnedto examine Sanji’s behavior. He couldn’t say anything much about them, anyway.
“Did they talk to you?” Thistime, the cook was squatting down and taking a seat in the corner.
“They did.” Zoro answered flatly, following Sanji’s steps and promptly sat down beside him. “Just stupid things,”
Sanji was busying himself withlighting up a new cigarette. His mind was clearly not in place, and he was notlooking at Zoro at all. And Zoro realized it was not a proper time for amockery, or their usual insults. So he just looked at him.
It was rare silent moment thatbarely happens between the two, and they knew none of them needed words toexplain it to the other.
Sanji took a long drag from hiscigarette and then exhaled. The man looked pretty much stressed, as much as hewanted to hide it.
“Heard some stupid shits, huh?”Sanji asked- not that was much of a question. Not even bothering to look atZoro’s face once again. “Mockin’ you and up, and shits for being my ‘husband’.”He sighed. “Sorry for that.”
Zoro was silent for a moment, trying to form words for that situation. He was so not used to this kind ofconversation with Sanji.
“No,” he finally managed. “Theydidn’t say any shit about you at all.” Noneof the brothers said much things. “Perhaps because that fact was alreadycommon sense to begin with.” He couldn’t help but to add his own insult at theend of the sentence.
Zoro’s reply, however, surprisedSanji quite a bit. But perhaps, there was not much to be surprised about infirst place.
“What did they say?” Sanjicouldn’t help but be curious, this time- finally perked up to look at Zoro.
“Just… something,” Zoro wasavoiding Sanji’s gaze this time, looking at the wall. He’d hate to admit thathe was curious over Sanji’s past with them, but he didn’t know how to ask himproperly about it- it’s not his thing to pry into the others, as much as hewanted his nakama to open up withhim.
Deciding that it was useless toask Zoro about it, Sanji returned to gaze upon the cracked wall on the otherside.
What did they do to you to make them apologizing so bad? Zoro wanted to ask so badly, buthe realized Sanji was not in the mood for it, so he decided to change to topicinto something else instead. Joining Sanji to look at the cracked wall, hecommented in a lighter tone.
“What the fuck is wrong with thatcrack on the wall?” Normally, it’s not a thing Zoro would’ve commented upon. But he was trying to light up the moment by a little. “Do they not have buildersto fix that shit?” It looked so out ofplace.
Sanji sighed, and looked down. Not a response Zoro expected to see from the guy. The man was taking a deepbreath in, trying hard to recompose himself. Part of him thought if he fuckedup. But then again, the cook always been so hard to read.
“Probably as a memento.” Sanjiflatly answered, gazing down.
“Memen-what?”
“As a reminder,” Sanji stated outagain- this time in a language that Zoro could possibly understand. “…that ‘I’was a failure to the Vinsmoke Family.”
Images of Ichiji, Niji, and Yonjibullied him appeared in the back of his mind. And then there was Reiju, andthere was Judge… none of them wanted him, ridiculed him- laughed at him.
“…Ah…” Tearing away his eyes fromSanji was quite a hard thing at that moment- especially that he didn’t want tohurt the cook’s pride (that was alreadyfragile to begin with, in his snarky comment). He decided to look at thewall again, examining it.
Sanji didn’t say anything for abit, and then he began again. “I used to be the weakest person I ever knew,” hestated. “I was never fond of how they treated how things were supposed to belike, and holding up how ‘my’ life should be as expectations.”
He took a long drag for a pause, and exhaled.
“They decided to dislike it,because that’s not how ‘I’ was supposed to be.” He stated again. “And since Inever live up to it, they-”
Sanji didn’t even bother tofinish the next sentence, but Zoro figured out the rest.
“…they decided to sullen you forit.” It never meant to come out as words, but it did.
Sanji nodded. The two returned togaze at the cracked wall once again. And Sanji continued.
“They used to beat me up.” Andthen, Zoro realized just how much this place brought back bad memories toSanji. “On this place… on this spot… and that wall…” They looked at the crackedwall, and this time Zoro understood.
“…And then, he also locked me upin the prison…” Sanji said again. “Not wanting to see my face, I had to weara mask for a living.” He chuckled quite a bit, not a tone of happiness could beheard from it. “I had to bear with it for months.”
And he wanted to give the man apat, a backrub, or a hug. Because the cook looked like he was about to cry. ButZoro knew- that Sanji was strong. And doing so without warning at this momentcould tear his stupid ‘manly’ pridehe holds.
“Then I escaped.” Sanji said, this time looking a bit brighter. “Out into the sea. It was rough, at first-but then… I met the old man.” Zoro didn’t bother to interfere- Sanji was almostlike talking to himself, but Zoro knew- the man needed to be heard.
“We built a restaurant together, and then everything was better.” Sanji stated with a soft smile, and then heclosed his eyes, and continued. “…Andthen I met you guys,”
And he smiled. A true smile. Asmile that was wide and happy- a smile that was so bright and cheerful it couldmelt his heart. The honest side of Sanji he barely ever seen before in hislife, a smile that he barely showed to anyone on the ship. He wanted to see himsmile like that, again- and more.
Sanji stood up after that, looking a bit cheered. Not much, but it was something at least.
“Sorry, you had to listen to allof that.” This time, their eyes met- and it felt almost too comforting. Becauseit spoke harder than words, than anything he could ever think. “I could neverforgive them, even though I really wanted to…”
Zoro wanted to say ‘It’s okay’, and how he understood that. But what came out was just a nod, and stand up beside him.
“Don’t think much about that fornow,” Those were what came out of his mouth instead. He closed his eyes, tryingto sound as casual as he could be to the cook.
Giving one single pat on Sanji’sback, Zoro walked through the hallway. The others must’ve been done with dinnerat that point, he thought. And they have to return to their ship too.
“You’re not alone.” Zoro said again as he walked his way, back intothe dining hall. We’ll be there.
Sanji nodded. Yes, he knew that.
“Oi, Marimo.” Sanji called, noteven bothered to follow the other man’s steps. Zoro, however, didn’t stop onhis track, and continued walking as he was listening.
Thanks/Don’t mention it. Unspoken words wentthrough his head, and of course- he would’ve never minded that. No matter howmuch Sanji talked about that, even if it takes forever- he would like him tohave as much happiness he could get in this family.
Sanji opened his mouth, callingout for Zoro again. This time, it sounded a little bit more casual. Just liketheir daily banter- or perhaps, too casual.
“You are going the wrong way.”
Perhaps, things really returnedback to normal.
And so, the Straw Hats wereleaving. They never planned to stop by for long, in first place.
Upon Zoro and Sanji’s return, they could see their nakamas werewaiting for them. The look on Sanji’s face when he was returned made everyone alittle glad.
Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper seemedlike they were enjoying themselves. Nami, on the other hand could be seen witha few bags of gold that God-knows-how-she-got-it. The Vinsmoke brothers couldbe seen in front of her with lusting look on their face. There was also Brook, asking for panties from Reiju, only to get politely declined on his quest andfailed.
“Oi, Sanji!” Luffy called withhis daily cheer. “You’ve got to check this out!” Usopp and Chopper called forhim too, and so Sanji smiled. He has hisfamily. Thus he walked towards the trio.
It was a refreshing thing to see,and Zoro couldn’t help but to smile too. He was so busy looking at Sanji as hewalked towards the three and had his fun with them. And Zoro didn’t evenrealizing it, until Vinsmoke Reiju walked beside him and began to speak.
“You cared for him so much,”
“Eh?” Zoro was caught off-guardwith that question, not preparing for a conversation. “Wait, what? What? Wha-”
“He really deserves you.” Notskipping a beat, Reiju spoke. She looked at Zoro, then at her not-so-brotherbrother. The statement reminded Zoro that they were in fact, still pretended tobe a married couple.
Blushing lightly and confused toact, he tried to respond casually.
“O-Oh…. Yeah… I guess…”
Reiju chuckled, as if she couldread what was going through on his head at that moment. “He is a good man.” Shethen said again.
“Please, take good care of him.”
This time, it was a request. Byreflex, Zoro’s gaze was locked upon Sanji, and only Sanji. He smiled softly. Sanjiis his rival and a special nakama- the two always been sharing a special bondever since they met, and it only grow stronger as time goes by. And he knew, the man was strong- and he will always be.He would continue to fight for himself, and never give up- he was thatstubborn. And he would protect him, and the rest of their nakama. And Zorowould protect him, too.
“Yes, I will.”
Zoro smiled, closing his eyes.Pledging to the Gods- if they were existed; but there was no need of it-because he was the only person needed to believe in his own vow- and he knew hewould keep it.
Seeing Zoro’s smile, and promise-Reiju smiled. At least she knew Sanji is in good hands- and he will findhappiness- always find happiness in this family.
And so, they bid farewell- not bysaying goodbye, but by walking away and leaving to their own paths. One thatthey thought would never be crossed again. And so, the Straw Hats movedtogether again- as a family they always been.
Sun was shining, all over theocean.
A lion was setting sail on thewonder called sea.
Ten people aboard chasing fortheir dreams.
On that sunny day, a paper hasarrived. Delivered by the seagulls all across the sea. The most recent news hasbeen updated.
“WHAT IS THIS?” Sanji pointedaccusingly to the paper he was holding, pointing it towards the swordsman. “StawHat Pirates’ swordsman, Roronoa Zoro, and the cook, Roronoa Sanji has beenmarried?”
Zoro blinked.
What?
“This is all your fault!” Sanjiscreamed, throwing the rustled newspaper on the floor.
“Do you think I know theslightest idea about it?” Zoro argued back. “It was the Witch’s idea!”
“Don’t you ever call Nami-san ormocked her like that!”
A swift kick aimed to the other’shead, the sound of a clash of a sword. All in a fine day in New World. Everythinghas returned back to normal- or as normal as it could be.
There was still the ongoing rumorabout Roronoa Zoro and Sanji’s marriage, and it went quite as viral all overthe sea. It would take a while for the rumor to stop spreading, or becorrected. But that’d be in another story.
