The new Bac
In 2018, the French baccalaureate was reformed, so lycée students don’t take the same bac as the one our first school system post described (and the one most of our mods took). The new bac’s format is closer to the UK A-levels or the IB baccalaureate; instead of choosing a filière/strand, students now pick three spécialités = majors at the end of Seconde, from a list that includes “typical” options (mathematics, economics, literature/philosophy…) and “newer” topics (geopolitics, humanities…).
In Première, the students’ timetable revolves mostly around these three topics, although they also take other classes from a core curriculum (including French Lit). During the year, they decide on one major to “abandon” - they don’t study it in Terminale, but their coursework in Première counts towards their final grade.
Exams at the end of Première: French Lit bac (the written exam is a choice between a text commentary and a general essay called a dissertation; the oral exam is an analysis of a text that was studied in class, followed by questions about one of the full works studied during the year).
In Terminale, the students take the remaining two specialties and the core curriculum, but unlike the old bac, the only exams they sit at the end of the year are those for the two specialties, as well as a Philosophy written exam and a Grand Oral, which assesses a project developed during Première and Terminale. There aren’t any exams for the core curriculum topics, but their coursework counts towards the bac’s final grade.
Core curriculum: History & Geography (still one topic), Languages, Moral and Civic Education, Scientific education (core biology, physics and chemistry), Physical Education.
Exams at the end of Terminale: Written exams for the two remaining spécialités, Philosophy written exam, Grand Oral (preparation of two projects, one for each specialty, during Première and Terminale, based on a question that the student chooses; the jury picks one randomly and the student has to present their work during a 20 minute oral exam, and then answer questions).
Note: as we said in our first school system post, the Miracuclass is more likely to take the "old" bac than the new one. We'll do our best to answer questions on the new bac if they arise, but the vast majority of the mods here took the old one, and the new one has undergone quite a few alterations already, notably because of Covid, so its organisation is not clearly defined yet.

Most universities are not particularly interested in students who approach college as the 13th grade—just the next step on a path laid out for them by their parents since before they were born. They instead seek out students who demonstrate passion and curiosity, especially about their chosen field of study.
In your college applications, it’s important that you demonstrate your interests (not just state what they are, but show them at work in your life) and that those interests inform your prospective major. You can and should demonstrate your interests in your college essays, your activities lists, and even in your transcripts.
Here are some specific tips on how to prove you’re invested in your intended major:
1. TAKE AP, IB, AND HONORS COURSES IN THAT FIELD
If your high school offers advanced courses in a field you’re passionate about, take those courses. Honors, AP, and IB credits demonstrate that you’ve devoted ample time and energy to a given field.
I would also recommend approaching advanced classes from the opposite direction. If you’re like most high school students, you’re not yet sure what you want to major in or what your academic interests are. Take advanced classes in subjects that you perform well in. You might find that these courses create entirely new interests for you that weren’t there before.
Throughout high school and college, you will likely develop new passions and a deeper understanding of what you love. Advanced courses are one of the ways in which you can discover what those passions might be.
2. JOIN A STUDENT ORGANIZATION … OR START YOUR OWN
Interested in computer science? Join a coding club at your school. Or, if none exists, create one. If you’re interested in something—whether it be coding, poetry, chess, or pottery—chances are there are other students at your school who are interested, too.
You can demonstrate passion for a field or cause by joining an organization on campus and working your way up the ranks to, say, secretary or even president. You can also demonstrate initiative and leadership by starting an organization of your own.
Not sure where to start? Ask a counselor or teacher at your school about how you might get something new off the ground. With the right support, you can develop your interests and set yourself up for a strong college application.
3. JOIN A CLUB & VOLUNTEER
You can also look beyond the walls of your school for club and volunteer opportunities. Join a mystery book club or a Spanish conversation club at your local library branch. Volunteer as an elementary school assistant at your local school district. There are so many possibilities that you can find with just a quick Google search.
4. TAKE FREE ONLINE COURSES
There are a ton of free online courses on subjects ranging from psychology to political philosophy, from computer science to principles of accounting.
You can find courses on the iTunes U app, many of which include syllabi and course readings alongside lectures. There’s a drove of Massive Open Online Courses available, many of which will even provide a certificate for completing the course. MIT hosts a wide range of free courses online, such as this Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python.
Many of these free online courses are offered by prestigious universities and taught by some of the most renowned faculty in their respective fields. By completing one of these courses, you can get a head start on university-level work and develop a new or existing passion.
5. CONTACT AN EXPERT
Do you live near a university? If so, reach out to faculty members to ask if they might be interested in your volunteering as a lab or research assistant, or even if you could stop by just to ask them some questions during their office hours. You might receive no response from a number of professors, but you would be surprised by how many would be more than happy to at least discuss what they do and why.
Along the same lines, if you’re passionate about business, reach out to local business owners. You might even find opportunities for employment. At the very least, you’ll gain vital insights into the kind of work you might want to do in college and beyond.
6. READ, WATCH, AND LISTEN ON YOUR OWN
Subscribe to The New Yorker, or The Economist, or Wired, or any number of magazines focused on literature and culture, or economics, or technology, or whatever it is you want to major in. Watch documentaries. Listen to podcasts. Finding media that will fuel your passion and leave you informed has never been easier.
The kind of knowledge you can gain from reading, watching, and listening first-hand cannot be matched by second-hand commentary. No visit to Sparknotes, or advice from your uncle, or other kind of second-hand knowledge can stand in for the real thing. Hearing or reading about the thing is no match for hearing or reading or doing the thing itself.
With a novel in your hand or even a computer science course on your screen, don’t just be a passive consumer—take notes not only on the content, but your reactions to it. What makes you excited? What leaves you confused? What gets you frustrated?
By staying engaged in a field of study, you shouldn’t only learn new information. You should also learn a lot about yourself.

UPDATED BTS HEADCANONS
PART D: EPROCTO
Seokjin
Not necessarily embarrassed about it, but he’s also not going to admit it.
“What noise? I didn’t hear anything. You should get your hearing checked.”
The type to excuse other members for them
Makes fart jokes, we know this
Not super gassy or anything, pretty average, I guess.
He really doesn’t care or mind, he’s not that uptight about it or anything in my opinion. We know JK farted on his hand once, so like?
He’d take the blame for someone if he had to in a public situation and joke around about it pretty easily.
Yoongi
Also doesn’t give a fuck. He knows a time and a place unlike some other careless members, but generally, doesn’t give a fuck.
The one who would scold a member for doing it a lot in public.
Carries GasX. They’re a pretty gassy group of guys, I’d think, and they’ve used it a lot more than they’d admit, I’m sure.
Wouldn’t say anything, normally. If he’s doing something or on his phone and it happens, and he knows someone’s staring at him, he’ll half-ass an “excuse me” without picking his head up.
Not loud, not quiet. Long and airy. Pretty consistent sound. It’s only super noticeable in a quiet room or if his stomach is upset.
Pretty much a, “what? I farted, cool, no big deal” attitude.
Hoseok
Would use it as a punchline, make a lot of jokes about it.
Average amount...I can’t think of anything in particular that might make him really gassy, unlike some of the other members.
I think he cares, but he’s not cripplingly embarrassed by it. He’d laugh it off, it’s his method of handling most things.
He thinks Jimin is adorable in everything he does. He’s had a gassy Jimin in his lap many times and found it more adorable than anything, so. He doesn’t think it’s worth anyone getting embarrassed about.
Would rather not fart in a silent room, but if he really had to, oh well. In the end, none of it bothers him too much.
Namjoon
I’m sure there’s been an incident where someone, in a very half-asleep, loopy state, thought there was a fucking elephant in the house when it was just Namjoon’s ass.
He pretends not to be embarrassed, but I think he gets a little bashful from time to time.
He won’t hold it in or anything, though. Again, “better out than in.”
Will actually excuse himself. It’s habit.
But really, just like with burping, he’s really damn loud. Hear-it-down-the-halls kind of loud. Especially when his stomach hurts.
I can also picture him giving some kind of political, philosophical, and/or scientific rant regarding farts and metaphors to get out of an embarrassing moment.
I was thinking about NamJin and who would be the first to fart solely the presence of the other if they were just an average relationship...and I totally think it would be Namjoon, laying next to Jin...Jin looks at him, and he looks at Jin, and goes, “so, do you know anything about American politics? About how Trump is building a wall that needs to be broken, as it’s hindering further progress of many aspects economically? Well, we’ve just...we’ve just broken Trump’s wall and done all the progress America’s been trying to do for the past couple of years in a few minutes, Jinnie.”
Jimin
He may not burp much, but he could fly his way through space with how gassy he gets sometimes as far as farting is concerned.
As I’ve said, I headcanon him with IBS, and IBS can do that.
There’s no rhyme or reason to it, really. Sometimes he’ll get a really upset stomach from the smallest thing.
But typically, the basics make him very, very gassy--the same things that would increase it a little bit in the average human, like dairy and greens and shit.
He hates it so, so much. Gets so embarrassed.
Not necessarily has-actually-started-crying embarrassed, but honestly? Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s come pretty close.
Will apologize and excuse himself every single time. At least, if he can keep up.
Ranges from normal and cute to fifteen-seconds-at-a-time-shake-the-bed farts.
Tries to laugh off the embarrassment if it happens like, once-off. If he’s seeking comfort from another because his belly hurts, he’ll spend the whole time whining with his face buried in their chest, so that doesn’t count.
Taehyung
Doesn’t fart as much as he burps, but definitely above average. Also on the loud side.
A child, part II.
Completely willing to give the commentary of, “ah, I’m so gassy…”
Totally does that.
He does, deep down, know a time and a place. Does he listen to that? No, not really.
There are very few situations where he would care enough to not do it.
It’s obvious if it was him, he smiles. Without a doubt. Unless he’s in a lot of pain, but again, different story.
Also willing to take the blame for it if blame must be taken for another member. Not even because he’s a jokester, literally because it doesn’t faze him.
I’m sure there’s some situations that would embarrass him and that he’s been in, but with the boys around? Not really, no.
Jungkook
He used to be really bashful. Said it with my burping headcanons too, but I think he used to torture himself and refuse to let anything out because he was cripplingly shy with everything, but eventually the others picked up on how shitty he’d feel if he held it all in, so they encouraged him to give no fucks.
Did I mention that they regret that decision sometimes?
Nah, ultimately, they’d rather he feel better than not be annoying.
But he’s annoyingly gassy.
Unintentionally. Like, him and Jimin are the can’t-physically-hold-it line.
Makes dumb dietary decisions, as I’ve said--they always bite him in the ass (pun intended.)
Will also use it for fuel to joke around, and he’s also the type to comfort someone else by intentionally ripping ass. There’s almost never a time where he doesn’t have something in him to give.
Will jokingly tease other members about it, too. Very jokingly, though, not like offensive.

As a former IB-centric studyblr (see Exhibit A here), I think that it is fair to say that I am a pretty strong IB advocate. There was nothing I loved more than pushing drafts of my Extended Essay at my mentor, complaining about CAS reflections and pretending to understand the complexities of TOK. But as May rolled around and my confidence in my abilities began to roll into July, I was in for the shocked of my life: instead of passing the program with my predicted academic achievement of 34/45, I just passed the program entirely, finishing with a score of 28/45. I was pretty shocked to say the least. As a toast to my astonishing academic feat, fake philosophy TOK and CAS social statuses on ManageBac: here’s 6 things I learned from almost failing IB, one point for every one that I lost in final exams.
Your grades do not define who you are: 80% exams and 20% moderated internal assessments? Where is the value in that classwork, discussion and studying? Is it all down the drain from here? Chemistry maybe. (Just a joking art-business student here.) Something that I really learned to appreciate is the versatility and application of studies that IB ingrains in their students. A combination of luck and talented teachers, my love for economics and business stems almost entirely from classroom discussions and case studies in Economics HL. I knew that business studies were for me as soon as I finished my first commentary.
Measure your pride not in how others judge your success, but in how you feel you have progressed: I think over the course of my two years in this program, I submitted over 4 drafts of my work to my Extended Essay mentor. While most students groan at the thought of a credit-less assignment, I could not be more excited to explore something I was interested in academically, not to mention having the motivation and opportunity to share it with others. At my graduation ceremony when I was asked to share the thing I was most proud of, I did not hesitate to say my Extended Essay. Does it suck to go from a B to a D? Absolutely. But that doesn’t discount the fact that I worked my ass off on that paper and I know that my mentor loved what I wrote. I gained a greater appreciate for literature and anthropology and honestly right now: that’s all I really need.
Don’t judge the dropouts: I will not be the first to admit that IB students sometimes have an elitist attitude when it comes to academics (especially compared to AP and regular program students). Sure, my program may be internationally-focused, but that’s no more than a few works in translation books in literature class or case studies in economics. At the end of the day, external markers control 100% of your grade (IAs are moderated, do not ever forget it) and if you’re like me, those same AP or regular program students you were putting down probably graduated with a higher average than you.
Your teachers are human too: One of my favorite things about IB is that everyone really is a team working together to have a greater success rate. It’s rarely you versus your teacher. I graduated knowing that my teachers did the best they could possibly do for me and it’s such a toss up what results in the end.
Keep your personal life on hold during the academic season: One of my biggest regrets for several reasons is that right around exams, I had a major falling out with my best friend and confidante of four years. It sucked, as most breakups do, but the worst part is that when I should have been focusing more on studying, I could barely get out of bed. Friendships are forever until nobody talks anymore and those grades that got you into university could have also resulted in making new friends.
Choose your friends diversely: So my strength is in languages and social sciences, but the way I designed my IB program focused heavily on the natural sciences and engineering. My closest friends and I were complete opposites which made up for great conversations and interesting perspectives. Through them, I gained a deep appreciation for science and mathematics. Even though these subjects may not be my favourites, I will always look to them with an open mind.
What advice would you share with high school students about your experience? I know that really hit home for me is the ability to reflect and journal. (Damn CAS for actually teaching me something useful in the end!)

Okay so! At my high school English was a mandatory HL for all IB diploma candidates. So for the other two HLs, Jack’s are obviously French and history (unless he does four like I did in which case maybe a science as the last one?), Shitty’s are philosophy for sure and maybe economics, Ransom’s are biology and maybe math, Holster’s are economics and music, Lardo’s are art and philosophy, and Bitty’s are history and maybe math (?). Bitty’s and Shitty’s third HL were probably the hardest to come up with.
Meanwhile, EE topics: Jack’s is the US Civil War, Shitty’s is something to do with feminism and maybe philosophy, Ransom’s is something related to biology, Holster’s is the economic structure of the recording industry over time (this is a paper I wrote my first year of college, hence me getting really specific), Lardo’s is about gender in art, and Bitty’s is about the history of Southern cooking.
(Personal note: my EE was about feminist social commentary in Tamora Pierce’s books, and it was awful, mainly because I’d never learned about social commentary in class and didn’t know how to analyze for it; it was just a thing I’d vaguely heard about. My HLs were English, math, economics, and Spanish. My SLs were physics and Swedish.)
I saw a post this morning about how high school AUs are unbearable after you finish high school, but! Full IB AU where the OG6 are all seniors at the same time! I mean, the CHAOS of TOK. Shitty for sure makes a mockery of the class, which stresses Ransom out because he's convinced he needs to get at least a 40 on the 45-point scale to get into an Ivy (which is very false because US universities don't care much about IB at all, but high schoolers have warped ideas of what colleges want). This leaves Jack to mediate between Shitty and Ransom, who are his two best friends, so Jack is stressed both academically and socially. Bitty mostly bakes and tweets when he should be studying and low-key wishes he were doing AP because then at least there wouldn't be IAs. Lardo and Holster bond over wishing projects could be more creative rather than all written; Lardo is in IB art (by herself? It's a tiny class for sure), and Holster is in IB music. Jack and Bitty have HL History together and last year that was a disaster but this year they're maybe getting along, which is weird. (Help, I think I have headcanons for everyone's HLs.) Jack and Lardo plan things to help everyone get their CAS hours done. Shitty writes his EE on feminism.

Firstpost Explains: How Indians will profit from US laws to carry country-specific caps on inexperienced playing cards
http://tinyurl.com/y2wzy2mc A lot to the delight of Indian professionals, US lawmakers on 10 July passed a bill to carry the present seven p.c country-cap for the problem of inexperienced playing cards. On changing into a regulation, the proposed invoice will significantly cut back the ready time of gifted professionals who’re eyeing everlasting residency in the US. File picture of US president Donald Trump. AP What’s a inexperienced card? A inexperienced card grants a non-US citizen the entry to completely work and reside in the US. After getting a inexperienced card, immigrants can qualify for US citizenship after three or 5 years. Inexperienced playing cards are largely granted to the members of the family of US residents (often known as ‘family-based inexperienced playing cards’) and people who maintain inexperienced playing cards at present. The subsequent largest group of recipients are staff from different international locations who search employment in the US. Beneath the ’employment-based inexperienced card’ class, numerous subcategories of staff can select to join everlasting residence. These teams embrace ‘precedence staff’, ‘professionals with superior levels’, ‘physicians’, ‘expert, unskilled {and professional} staff’, ‘particular staff’ and ‘traders’. ‘Humanitarian inexperienced playing cards’ are issued for refugees, humanitarian trafficking victims, crime victims, and abuse victims. Nonetheless, every of those teams should qualify the predetermined standards which have been set for granting ‘humanitarian inexperienced playing cards’, of their respective instances. Beneath ‘range lottery inexperienced card’, the US authorities randomly selects 50,000 folks from quite a few entries that it receives from areas similar to Asia, Africa, and Oceania. This occurs on a yearly foundation. The ‘longtime resident’ inexperienced card could be issued to people who’ve stayed in the US lawfully or unlawfully since 1 January, 1972. Apart from the foremost ones, there could be quite a few different inexperienced playing cards issued by the US authorities. Each kind of inexperienced card has sure eligibility necessities which have been enlisted by US Citizenship and Immigration Companies (USCIS). What’s an H-1B work visa? Beneath the Immigration and Nationality Act, The US H-1B visa permits US corporations to make use of international staff in specialty occupations. Specialty occupations normally demand utility of experience in specialised areas (IT, finance, arithmetic, science, medication and so forth.) and a bachelor’s diploma or work expertise. In 2018, a US report acknowledged that three-fourth H1B visa holders are Indians. The report additionally mentioned that Indians have been the vast majority of H-1B visa holders within the US and accounted for 73.9 p.c of the entire visa holders. How will Indians profit from the invoice? As per the present immigration system, a cap of seven p.c per nation quota is imposed on the allotment of inexperienced playing cards. This has confirmed to be a serious blow for extremely expert Indian IT professionals who enter the US primarily on the H-1B work visas. Titled the Equity of Excessive-Expert Immigrants Act, 2019, the brand new invoice will increase the seven p.c nation cap to 15 p.c. It additionally gives for the elimination of the seven p.c cap on employment-based immigrant visas. “It proposes to think about 57% of immigrants for skill-based inexperienced playing cards. That’s over a fourfold improve from the prevailing 12%. A big inhabitants of Indians, who’re at present on H-IB visas are going to profit from it,” The Hindu quoted KV Kumar, chairman, and CEO of Indian American Worldwide Chamber of Commerce (IAICC), as saying. Indians will profit considerably from US President Donald Trump’s new plan that permits simpler entry for international nationals to change into everlasting residents within the nation. On a median, an Indian nationwide has to attend for at the least nine-and-a half-years to get a inexperienced card. Trump’s proposal adopts a point-based system that prefers folks with expertise for everlasting residency as towards the current nation primarily based quotas that privileges household ties within the situation of inexperienced playing cards. “We cherish the open door that we wish to create for our nation, however a giant proportion of these immigrants should are available by means of benefit and talent,” mentioned Trump. The purpose-based system can be being adopted by international locations like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Reactions to the invoice Congressman Paul Gosar acknowledged that the invoice comes on the expense of American staff and college students. Elevating considerations concerning the proposed invoice, Centre for Immigrant Research prompt towards passing the invoice with out making any amendments. “Adopting a unique inexperienced card choice system that chooses essentially the most extremely educated and expert staff would get rid of the necessity for a per- nation cap system, and wouldn’t reward the exploitative employers who thrive on the prevailing system,” it mentioned. However, the invoice was welcomed by Indian professionals from throughout the US, significantly these from the Silicon Valley in California, Seattle space in Washington state, the Higher Washington DC space and the tri-state space of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Prime American IT companies hailed the laws, urging the Senate to cross it on the earliest. “As we speak the US Home handed the laws to make sure folks from all international locations are handled alike within the Inexperienced Card course of. This promotes a good high-skilled immigration system that’s good for the enterprise and our economic system,” mentioned Microsoft president Brad Smith. Congressman John Curtis backed the invoice saying that it’s going to allow the US corporations to flourish and compete in a worldwide economic system since they rent the brightest folks to create services and products. Nonetheless, Indians should await the much-anticipated transfer because the invoice needs to be handed by the Senate, earlier than being signed as a regulation by Donald Trump. How to Get a 7 in Your IB Economics IA
How to Write an Economics IA Commentary
Commentaries make up the internal assessment component of the IB Economics Course. This component is worth 20% of your final mark, but given the flexibility and time you are offered, there should be no reason why you can’t score a high mark in this section.
The best part of commentary writing is that you can decide which concepts to write on. You decide…
