Exam Pattern of IAS

UPSC Exam Pattern 2020 - UPSC conducts civil services exam (CSE) to recruit IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and other Group A and B officers. The IAS prelims 2020 is scheduled to be held on October 4, 2020. Candidates preparing for UPSC IAS exam should be well aware of the exam pattern and marking scheme of Prelims, Mains and Interview stages.

 UPSC Exam Pattern 2020 – Prelims

The UPSC CSE Prelims exam is divided into two papers: Paper 1 for General Studies and Paper 2 for Civil Services Aptitude Test.

 There are two GS papers of 100 marks each with deduction of 1/3 of a mark for a wrong answer. The nature of exam is objective with multiple choice questions and both have a duration of 2 hours with 100 and 80 questions respectively. The medium of exam is English and Hindi and the mode of exam is offline.

UPSC prelims examination is meant to serve as a screening test only. The GS paper 2 is a qualifying paper with minimum requirement of at least 33%.

 UPSC Exam Pattern 2020 - Mains

The mains examination consists of nine papers which are of essay out of which two papers will be of qualifying in nature.

There     are two qualifying papers of 300 marks each. Paper A- Indian Language which     can be selected by the candidate from the languages included in the Eighth     Schedule to the Constitution, and Paper B - English.

The  written test comprises of 1750 marks.

The interview carries 275 marks with no minimum requirement for qualifying marks.

Marks obtained from Paper I to Paper VII and the marks from the interview/personality test is included in the final result.

The final ranking will be based on the marks obtained by the candidate in written as well as on the marks of interview.

 UPSC IAS Interview

A board will interview the candidates and ask questions on issues of general interest. The goal of the interview is to offer a board of qualified and impartial experts access to the candidate's personal suitability for a Public Services career.Many of the attributes to be evaluated include mental alertness, vital assimilation abilities, simple and reasonable communication, judgmental consistency, etc.

Candidates are expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in their particular areas of academic study but also in the events that are taking place around them.
