Winter Fest - Victorian Ball

Iann believes velveteen corduroy trousers, satin shirt, heeled boots, and a long coat could conceptually cover ‘Victorian Ball’.  Good enough, right?  

After all, when attending something alongside party-goers who literally lived through the era, it seemed pointless for a 20th century boy to attempt much authenticity. Just a mild flavour would do.

Iann Cardero, 4th year Interdisciplinary Science BSc and Swim Championship winner 2017-2019 || age: 25

Iann was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and never bothered to travel far from the city.  Raised by his single mother and her huge family in Beacon Hill, he is the oldest (and favourite, he’s sure of it) firstborn son.  

Iann started competitively swimming in high school and was all set to go to U of Washington on a scholarship, but a drunk driving (oh, and also disorderly conduct) misdemeanour knocked that dream out of his swimtrunks.  After taking a couple years off to ‘find himself’ (aka party and weed), Iann finally moved to Soapberry and enrolled in SBSU four years ago. He joined the swim team, assumed the role of assistant coach, and took the Championships away from rival U of W.

He’s completing his BSc in Interdisciplinary Science mostly because he doesn’t care about the academics and it seemed the ‘easiest’ route to please his mama.  Since bringing the Championship to SBSU, Iann’s now riding high on his laurels.  

His only goal is to somehow make swimming his life and invent the perfect painless ingrown-hair-free leg-wax.

Mala Cardero* (died in 2012) - Iann’s mother.   This is how Iann most remembers her: young and vibrant and with a huge mass of big curly hair.  She was usually more grim with Iann but Mala did have (genuine) fun every now and again.  Usually when joking around with the Aunts before or after a party, when the women all felt comfortable and unified.  The only other way Iann remembers her is when she was in palliative care.  He’d rather not remember her frail and weak, arguing with him about making sure he did her make-up right.

Aunt Lily* (supposedly died?!?!) - One of Iann’s many Aunts and he wouldn’t admit it but she was his favourite.  Not just because he thought she was magical.  But simply because she paid attention to him and liked spending time with him, teaching and cultivating his weirdo-ass with a patience not many other people had (understandably, because Iann was a handful).  She looked after him when Mala simply had no energy to deal with him.

I’d say Iann’s guardians also extended to other various Aunts in the brothel, but Aunt Lily was his main tutor and confidante during his formative years (between 11-17 years old).

Choose a beloved cartoon of your younger years: who is your character most like in it?

Iann’s archetype doesn’t really lend itself for children’s cartoons unless I count like…Oscar the Grouch. XD  And The Real Ghostbusters (aka my OG childhood cartoon) is too much a gimme because Iann’s like an amalgam of them all, even Janine.    

So I decided to go with Yakko from Anamaniacs!  

As his name suggests, Yakko is the most talkative of the trio. He’s witty and has a way with words, and uses this to his advantage, often annoying people to their wits end with his rambling or tricking them with his quick-thinking. 

He knows his limits and, while he will tease some people, he knows what to say and when to employ diplomatic charm to calm them down - or at least try to. 

Despite being zany, he sticks to a high moral code and never torments anyone unless they’re asking for it, or have provoked him or his siblings.  He deeply cares for his siblings.

Yakko tends to reference a lot of innuendo in his dialogue.

(Which very loosely makes Dot = Cassie and Wakko = Miguel XDD Accurate.)

"I got a package here for Mr. Cardero." A young girl approached the Stonefruit Inn reception with a brown box. Inside, a used machete, its blade cleaned and sharpened, is found. There is no note attached to it.

"Do you want --?”  Iann was pulling out his pen to give a signature, but the girl hustled out quickly, as if the package was a subpoena.

Iann shared a glance with Pixi. 

“You’ll be in the alleyway,” Pixi nodded, picking up the phone to make sure the rest of the staff steered clear of the alley behind the Inn.

Iann took the package outside to a small shed/storage space full of wood and sidewalk salt bags.  This was common procedure by now, when mysterious anonymous packages were delivered to Iann. Just in case anything went...wrong.

Donning heavy duty gloves, goggles, and a mask, Iann carefully opened the package to reveal...

“My machete...?” Iann straightened from his wary crouch, lifting the goggles after poking the weapon a bit.  It was what he relied on to defend himself in the pocket blighted worlds, and he was sure he’d lost it...somewhere.  He couldn’t even remember.

“Fuck me.”  Iann was about to pick it up, but instead he just left it in the box, and heavily sat on the pile of logs, staring at it.  He felt as dull as it looked sharpened.

What does your character’s voice sound like? Does it differ from your fc? What about their singing voice?

Iann sounds exactly like Pedro Pascal.  Same low timbre, West Coast cadences (PNW and Cali), stammering, and definitely same high-energy.

THE LAUGHTERS (there are many) ARE SO IANN.

Singing starts around the 6:15 mark and is exactly Iann.  He can carry a tune for singing in the car, the shower, and for karaoke.

Also bonus that this is Iann with his friends - super-physical with deadpan teasing.

The Sorting Hat: Ravenclaw Primary, Slytherin Secondary

Ravenclaw Primary:

The gradual editing process of the Ravenclaw’s system as they mature and see more of the world leads to the many different states that are fluid and may often coexist and contain intermediate states.

It’s common for Ravenclaws to care about experiencing the world in its entirety. If you’re working with incomplete information, how can you know that the system you constructed fits the entire world, and not just your own?

There are Ravenclaws whose most important truth is that there is no universal objective truth, but that finding individual, subjective truth is just as important of a goal. You have Ravenclaws who are hugely capable of and demanding of tolerance.

Ravenclaws tend to distrust in their innate, “gut instinct” view on thing, but that doesn’t mean that Ravenclaws don’t have those gut instincts; they just don’t prioritize them.

Slytherin Secondary:

A Slytherin Secondary adapts to the situation, going with the flow and making use of advantages as they come (sometimes leading them to appear lucky where they are actually better described as opportunistic).

This maneuverability adds to the Slytherin reputation for cunning – but from the Slytherin’s perspective, those opportunities were there for other people to see, too, and taking advantage of them is resourceful.

It doesn’t feel deceitful to a Slytherin to change to fit the needs of their environment– to be kind with this person, forceful with this one, erudite to the next. This adaptability can be applied to manipulation, influence, and power, but a Slytherin secondary can just as easily focus their efforts on maintaining friendships, making people happy, encouraging positive social change, or streamlining communication.

Slytherin’s success depends majorly on what problem it is they have to solve. Slytherins make up their plan of attack in the moment. Their actions, visage, and choices are specific to that situation. They are better at some spaces than others, and without input that they can properly react to they will tend to find themselves out of their depths until they can find new inputs.

THE SEEKER: Charming and able to adjust to all kinds of situations, Seekers can bring new perspectives about life to anyone who is curious enough to engage with them.

THE INDIVIDUALIST: Individualists are exciting to be around because they are always in the vanguard and always ready to take issue with anything too constraining or boring.

THE NOVELTY-SEEKER: Explorers have a hard time appreciating what they have already accomplished because they always feel there is more to do. This compulsion may cause them to leave present tasks unfinished.

Caregiver in the light/shadow:

The BFF: BFFs are the people you know you can turn to at the worst and best of times. They are there when the going gets tough and ready for fun when the living is easy.

THE MENTOR: Unselfishly open to those hungry to learn, great Mentors give confidence to those who need it.

THE CODEPENDENT: Caregivers can become ensnared in situations beyond their control and wrongly take responsibility when things go badly.

Performer in the light/shadow:

THE CLOWN: You love to clown around and make people smile and laugh. You are often the class clown. You can also be the sad clown wearing a mask of deception a mask . You can be quite dark underneath the smile. 

THE TRICKSTER: You can appear at anytime out of thin air with something a simple as “boo” to something that can make others laugh until they fall down. You can also be terribly destructive by causing chaos in the lives of others. You are funny until you are not.

He’s terrible at casual sex - he’s detached and bored and is boring, and Iann knows it.  He approaches sex as an exciting, emotional exploration, starting from the ground-up with a person he loves. Whether or not that’s a compatible process for the partner is for them to decide, mwahaha.

which cartoon character does your muse remind you of - physical and/or personality wise.

I mean do I even need to say.  If Iann grew up in an average life he’d 98% likely own a burger joint, have three kids he adores (and hollers at all the time) and a peppery wife who is his partner in life (and who exasperates him).

Other evidence:

Bob actually has some talent and creativity

The moustache

The general gruffness, combined with his genuine enjoyment/obsession/passion

His temper, especially in his hilarious rivalry with Jimmy Pesto where Bob generally always fails

The amusement he finds in his own life

His soft bisexuality

His kids both love him and sabotage his goals all the time

Only his outspoken wife could ever find him attractive

He’s a lovable loser

The typical cartoon dad-trope, except he’s not a manchild

How much does your character's physicality impact their personality? Are they very body-conscious? Does it affect how they view other people's bodies?

Since Iann is so verbal/cerebral, he categorizes his body:

He knows he’s average build, slightly taller than average, that he’s cismale. That he can be white-passing if he needs to be.  He uses these attributes as assets to blend in, be looked over as the default of ‘normal’ that most people (in the USA) are indoctrinated to consider unremarkable.  He doesn’t want to stand out in a crowd. Being the scoundrel that he is, it helps him get away with shit.   At least, before he settled in Soapberry. 8D

So why the moustache?  Even subconsciously Iann has some vanity about him.  He likes having a moustache, he likes that despite how ‘invisible’ he is physically, the stache is used as such a unique individual identifier of Iann Cardero by friends and non-friends alike.  Other people wear scruff/facial hair (Miguel, Lilo, Ephram, etc) but Iann is That Guy with the moustache.  Or pornstache, or just ‘stache.  Superficially, it’s what people remember about him.

Since he was young, he learned that bodies were objects separate from the consciousness/soul/spirit/personality.  A body could be a commodity, and/or a separate source of desire/lust/pleasure-seeking.  But what the body did was not what defined the mind.  This wasn’t exactly what his mother taught him, but what he taught himself as a little boy, to rationalize the things he learned/saw.

It’s like an egg: the albumen and the yolk.  Together it makes an egg, but they remain separated in the shell (the shell being the mask people use for dealing with other people).  Metaphor!

This sort of mindset laid foundations in Iann’s mind when he grew up in the brothel, and haven’t really changed since.

His clinical view of other people’s bodies therefore is shaped by two things: 

his childhood - a true, real, genuine personality is completely separate from a body; 

and his adulthood - bodies are fleshbags in the eyes of demons  

In order to delve into demonology; to help the unfortunate people who were plagued by demons, Iann made himself perceive bodies (of humans) in the same way demons did to understand demon motivations.  Ironically, he didn’t find that perception too difficult, because he assumed that was how men saw the bodies of his Aunts and mother, in the brothel.

As tempting, earthy, sensual fleshbags, to be used for one’s wicked wicked terrible bad grotesque pleasure.  

Since Iann likes to consider himself ‘not like’ those johns, he strips people’s bodies down to the bare facts of them, separating temptation or desire and delineating bodies into mere vessels for what is truly precious and beautiful and treasured and desirable: the spirit/soul/personality/consciousness of a person. 

Therefore, he doesn’t really care what people’s bodies look like.  He only values them insofar as their usefulness and preservation of a spirit/soul.  To Iann, they’re all the same: delicious tangible feasts for a demon to manipulate and destroy.  

(He can, however, feel differently about a person’s body and can slowly reattach physical to soul/spirit, if a person gives him that permission.  If a person demonstrates their own spirit through the use of their body, not just intertwining the two parts, but also wanting Iann to share and engage with both parts. Like making an omelette!)
