i am not normal about these characters: shadow the hedgehog

shadow is special to me. he was the first character i was ever abnormal about. so today you all get to share in my abnormalness

now, if you’ve seen my previous iannatc posts, obviously we’re gonna get neurodivergent headcanons out of the way first. autism and ptsd. i don’t think i need to elaborate on the ptsd. shadow is hypersensitive, is hyperempathetic, has special interests, avoids eye contact, doesn’t understand social conventions, and has alexithymia.

ofc this motherfucker is hyperempathetic. he was created to be a companion for maria as well as to cure her. but he was also created to be a weapon, so he would have heightened senses as well. he gets overstimulated really easily when he’s not in a fight.

he has special interests in medicine/diseases/healthcare in general, motorcycles and bugs. i saw a comic where a bug got onto the ark and now i just think shadow really likes bugs and thinks they’re neat. i’ve explained that he knows medical stuff in a different post

my guy does NOT understand his own emotions

shadow has a few different fears, mostly stemming from trauma. he’s especially afraid of heights (acrophobia), tight spaces (claustrophobia) and needles (trypanophobia). needles (and really any medical things) are made 10x worse when he doesn’t have any agency in the situation.

bc of the medical trauma, he strongly prefers colored/patterned bandages bc they feel less clinical/institutional.

he loves physical contact. he is a hugger. he requires kindness and affection. his love language is physical closeness. he does not want anyone to know about this. sometimes rouge will carry him around and he’ll pretend to hate it but he secretly really enjoys it.

shadow is agender (any pronouns, he/him used here for consistency). he learned about trans people and thought “how can anyone feel like a man or a woman?” he then went into a spiral about it (bc of self worth/dehumanization issues) until rouge told him to look up the term agender. this happened with him being aroace as well, except replace rouge with sonic, who is also aroace. sometimes i throw aplatonic into the mix for extra fun.

shadow does not officially work for gun. in fact, he actually got rouge to help him file a lawsuit for all the bullshit they put him through. they settled out of court, and now shadow gets a monthly sum of money from gun. he joins rouge and omega on missions though (rouge works for gun as an alternative to prison, omega wants to blow shit up), and he’s also more competent than any of the medical team, so he’s unofficially in charge of them. he and abe are currently working shit out with the government to get shadow an official medical license.

he lives with rouge and omega. they’re a weird little fucked up found family 💕

shadow is susceptible to hyperthermia/heat stroke. thick black fur gets hot in the summer, plus he’s used to the colder temperatures on the ark/in cryostasis.

shadow will always go see the northern lights if he has any opportunity to. he got to experience them on the ark with maria (yes, you CAN see the northern lights from space) and they both wanted to see what the lights were like on earth. they’re more beautiful than shadow ever could have imagined. he named his chao aurora btw.

sonic and shadow secretly get along, and even have movie nights together. in front of other people (or a camera) they’ll always fight, but they do actually enjoy each other’s company. tails and rouge see right through their facades. shadow also only pretends to have beef with tails when sonic is around. otherwise, he gets along with both just fine.

shadow has no preferred music genre. he likes anything from taylor swift to death metal. sonic got him into crush 40 tho lmao (see iannatc sonic edition)

shadow is a keanu stan. he watched the one spongebob movie solely bc he was told keanu was in it. his favorite franchise of all time is john wick. if he knew keanu voiced him in the scu he’d explode.

shadow thinks die hard is a christmas movie. (he is correct.)

i am not normal about these characters: miles “tails” prower

i am about as normal about tails as i am about sonic, i.e. not normal at all. therefore. woe! tails headcanons be upon ye

autism. obviously. it mostly manifests through curiosity, hyperfixations/special interests, sensory sensitivity, being hyperverbal, strong emotions, and high empathy. however, some of those are boosted by childhood trauma and general anxiety. he’s also dyslexic.

tails’ big special interests are engineering, planes, science in general, and believe it or not, boats. more on that later. (the plane thing is sonic’s fault lol)

tails reacts strongly to most stimuli, especially sound and touch, but those two are mostly due to the events on west side island. he’ll only let a few specific people touch him (amy and knuckles are the two main ones), and exclusively sonic is permitted to touch his tails.

unlike sonic, tails is hyperverbal. he talks to himself constantly, and doesn’t really like when everything is silent. if you let him ramble, you will be his friend. if sonic isn’t in the mood to talk, tails often will for him.

also unlike sonic, tails is a very high empathy person. people, critters, even objects. he has a habit of personifying pretty much everything. if something breaks, he’ll be almost inconsolable. he takes very good care of things and people.

my boy has no sleep schedule. he also has a semi-canon mint addiction. he definitely also drinks a fuckton of caffeine.

tails likes to throw sodium/potassium/sodium-potassium alloy in water. (sonic likes to watch lmao)

tails’ fur grows thicker for the winter, and then he sheds in the spring. he hates shedding season because he is itchy and everything gets covered in his fur. once shedding is done he’s fine, though.

he has chronic lower back pain due to how his spine is from the twin tails. usually it’s manageable, but he does have a wheelchair for the really bad days.

there is exactly one big thing sonic and tails disagree on. HYDROCITY. i’m sure a bunch of y’all have seen the one idw comic but for those who haven’t. sonic says hydro city and tails says hydrossity. they are the only two people in-universe who care.

tails used a boat to get to cocoa island. he also used a boat to come back to west side when he realized complete isolation was bad for his mental health. initially, he immediately regretted this, but then he met sonic and you know how it goes from there.

i. do not actually have any particular lgbtq+ headcanons about tails. mainly bc i can’t decide lol

tails bought a mint company when he was 6. he doesn’t really remember how it happened (read: please don’t ask idk either) but he owns a mint company now. he pays everyone generously, and he’s actually a really good boss all around. sonic has no idea tails owns a mint company. tails intends to keep it that way.

i am not normal about these characters: sonic the hedgehog

i have so many headcanons about this blue motherfucker. it’s not even funny. therefore, i’m making it everyone else’s problem

most of these will be stated like facts, but they are all headcanons.

let’s get two of the big ones out of the way. autism and adhd. he has them. his autism presents primarily through lack of understanding social cues, low empathy, touch aversion/sensitivity and special interests. his adhd presents itself through hyperactivity, impulsiveness, disorganization, poor working memory and lack of an attention span.

because of his low empathy, he has to make a conscious effort to react appropriately in a given situation. he still cares about people, he just can’t express it through empathy. this has caused disconnect between himself and other people before. his lack of empathy is somewhat compensated for by his strong sense of justice.

sonic does not like touch. not only does it remind him that he has a physical form (mood), but in most cases, it just feels uncomfortable. he especially dislikes it when touch restricts his movement. he’s also very texture sensitive, which is part of his aversion to water. because of all this (and his need to move around a lot), he’s actually also claustrophobic.

he has special interests in geography and mechanical stuff. a headcanon i copied from a random person is that he has a perfect sense of direction. he also enjoys tinkering with things because he is Doing and he likes to be Doing at all times.

hyperactivity is self explanatory. same with impulsiveness. he’s tried to work on the latter, since he doesn’t enjoy that trait about him, but his body moves quicker than his brain, in multiple senses. his inattentive nature is primarily caused by his hyperactivity.

one more thing related to his autism is him having been nonverbal when he was younger. he started speaking a bit after meeting tails, whom i believe to have been the catalyst. sometimes, primarily when experiencing strong emotion, sonic still goes into verbal shutdown. he uses a sign language (i default to american sign language but it could be any) to communicate when this happens, as well as whenever it’s just himself and tails.

in my heart, sonic is a repulsed aroace trans man. you can never take this from me.

sonic also hates winter. snow is cold, it slows him down, he can’t run on ice, when snow melts it makes his legs wet, and all in all, he just really doesn’t enjoy it. he does have seasonal affective disorder. the exceptions to his winter hatred are snowboarding and christmas.

sonic is almost as good of a pilot as tails. the tornado was canonically his plane first, after all. he doesn’t fly as often, but he’s still fully capable. fixing up the tornado was actually the origin of his interest in mechanical stuff.

sonic’s favorite band is crush 40.

sonic cannot public speak to save his life. he can public sign, he can public appear, he can even public juggle, but public speaking (speaking being the operative word here) is not something he can do.
