I saw a post that claimed the way Illyrians have been described is correct because the real Illyrians weren’t good people.. yes that might be true, but it’s just the way that Sjm has written them feels incredibly racist. She writes it as if the Illyrians that represent balkan people deserve to be wiped out. I‘m not at all happy with the „exception“ that is Rhys, Cassian and Azriel because they‘re racist towards their own people and act so fucking American. There’s a reason why the fandom argues over wether or not they‘re people of color to begin with. Heck, the amount of times I see people fancasting Ian someholder or Henry Cavill speaks for itself.

There‘s also a speculation that she only used the balkan name that was used by another author (Sjm legit plagiarized her work) but the people (Illyrians and hewn city ppl) might represent middle eastern people than balkan people, specifically Palestinians because of the clear zionist elements in her books regarding the entire night court.

That said, she‘s incredibly racist towards Irish culture, middle eastern culture and balkan culture. I don’t think she‘s racist towards any African culture but she does constantly disrespect black people.

My main issue is that people barely talk about her obvious racism. I hate that she‘s fucking famous and that her books are recommended for the suppose „diversity“.

YES!!! exactly. it’s infuriating. if you want a diverse series or author, read something written by a POC.

albanians have been persecuted all throughout southern europe since the inception of the ottoman empire to now in serbia, macedonia, and kosovo. we can call ourselves illyrians because it connects us to our rich and incredible unique history. so it’s infuriating that a FANTASY author can’t create a new name for her misogynistic barbaric fairies instead of categorizing us once again.
