I am the “man” in my life

There has been a loose floor-level board of one cupboard in the kitchen for almost a year. At the time, I asked Partner several times to fix it. He tried so, but it kept getting loose again and again, in just a few minutes. I asked Partner to check it a last time. Partner looked at it critically and gave me his opinion.

Partner: “It needs a new long nail and we only have short ones, we should notify the renting agency so that they can get a professional to fix it.”

I sent an email notifying the problem, and I get another one telling me that they have filed a report. In the next house revision, three months later, the agency agent asked me if something needed fixing.

Me: “Well, there is still the board that needs fixing in the kitchen. I sent an email about it.”

Agent: “Oh, really? I didn’t see anything in the report. I will call someone so that it gets repaired.”

Three months later, and six months later, in the next revisions, the board still needed fixing and I reported it to the agents both times. At this point, I gave up, thought that I had given notice at least four times, and decided to forget it. 

Last month, I gave notice that we were going to leave the place. Partner had left for the new destination already, so I spend several weeks alone in the house, preparing to vacate it. Today, cleaning the kitchen, I saw again the loose board. And then I thought that, what are the chances? If the agent seemed surprised every time that I notified the board, could they give complain about its state in the final inspection and could I get troubles getting my caution back? 

That board needed fixing before I left. So, I took my tool box, nails and a hammer, hoping that I could improvise something.

One minute later, the board is fixed for good. I didn’t need any new nail. Apparently, Partner miscalculated how deep the board had to be nailed: he hammered it, but the nail never reached the board in the back in depth, and that’s why the board kept springing to its loose position. I am still wondering how he didn’t notice it.

That board had been loose for a year because a combination of lack of realisation from my Partner and laziness from a sequence of (male) agents who didn’t file a report properly. On the other hand, I am glad that they didn’t send anyone to fix the board, because it would have been embarrassing to call a professional only to hammer a nail.

Here to remind myself (again) that, if I want something fixed, from now on it would be wiser to try to repair it first by my own, male feelings of property be damned.
