Switchfoot Concert and Soulfest August 8, 2014

Sarah( hellohurricane ) connected me with her friend, and switchfam member extroardinaire, Casey ( iammeanttolive) . We met up the day of the concert and by the way she is the sweetest person on the planet.  Casey introduced me to her friends who, by the way, are the sweetest people on the planet. We ran and got out place in the pit front and centre. I was there from about noon on so I got to hear a good deal of bands. Skip to the end if you only want to hear about Switchfoot.

So first I hung out and heard a band called Chasing Cooper. Their sound was a little funky so I had trouble hearing everything as it should be, but they were pretty good for the most part. I uh...especially for the electric violin, which for one is super cool addition and speaks to the East Coast (Canada) girl in me.... and the girl was GORGEOUS OOPS.

Jamie (Tworkowski ) made me cry. I ramble on here so read more if you want.

I've read the story of how To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) began many times before, I've talked about it, and I've shared it with others. But hearing it from his mouth, with him standing there in front of me, it was a witness to the wonderful strength and support that Jamie and TWLOHA have come to mean. It was so powerful.

He spoke to us about community and forging relationships. Something so important in everyone's lives whether we're struggling with mental health issues or not.

TWLOHA means a lot to me personally. I'm in the middle of my own fight and while I'm not ready to share my own story yet, I can share the message brought by  TWLOHA and bring help to others like myself.  I also know that I'm not alone. No one understands the struggle until you've experienced it but there's sympathy and compassion and love in friendship, family, your community. He's standing up there telling me that my friends and family want to help me and that they're there for me. I don't believe it when they tell me themselves, I just feel like a burden. But his words rang true in that moment and give me a tiny glimmer of hope to keep fighting, even if it's not for myself or my family, it'll be for my international community of fighters like myself.

Then we saw The Wrecking, well a version of The Wrecking. The ex- lead singer was there as well and a buddy on the keyboard and they played an awesome acoustic set. I'd never heard of them before  in any shape or form, but I like them a lot! I had a little time so I went off then to get the DVD and another switchfoot t-shirt oops :) This was before the meet and greet because I wanted the DVD signed :) We were up at the front of the line thanks to Casey and her wonderful friends. I met Katie (switchfootkatie) there, another incredibly  lovely person with incredible hair! The guys were sweethearts of course. Of course. I got to say what I wanted to say this time instead of mumbling like an idiot, as I had the first time. I still managed to be wonderfully awkward though because this is me. I said I was from Canada and all that, and while I managed to say my name to Drew and Romey,  but When Jon asked my name and I said Ottawa like three times (where I'm from). I finally managed to spit my name out and then I managed to say a little of what I wanted to. Phew. Jon sang a bit of the Canadian national anthem for me while we got the picture. IT WAS PERFECT. Then I was rushed along to say a quick Hi to Tim and Chad and I just said thank you like 7 million times. We rushed back to get our place for Don Miller and caught the end of Scott Stapp. I only knew the one song from The Creed. Other than that he was just really sweaty. The music was good, I think.  I was mostly still on a high from meeting the guys and my excitement was building for Don. Don is a sweetheart as well, but I'll put his stuff below so you can skip it.

 He talks like he writes or maybe he writes like he talks. It was like having a conversation with your favourite uncle, he was so, so wonderful.  He spoke about how after hitting the New York Times Best Seller list he became depressed, missing his purpose in life. He read a book by Viktor Frankl, Mans Search For Meaning, which I've read as well. It's quite a difficult read as he speaks about his time in a concentration camp during the Second World War. But he puts forward his thoughts on finding meaning in your life and it's really moving and you should give it a go if you can. Oh and read Blue like Jazz if you haven't already!

So Don, oh wow it was wonderful. He went on to say that he didn't believe God had a plan for us except for two specific cases, if you were a virgin and you became pregnant or if you Jesus yourself. He said God would make it pretty darn obvious if he had a specific plan for you.  Instead he encouraged people to do things together or to do things with God if you will. The wonderful thing about Don is that his messages can connect with everyone. Talk to God, have a little chat and figure out together what you want to do with your life, if it's something that gives your life meaning. Don't just let your life pass you by. You have to do stuff, have a project,  you have to be present. He talked about three things Viktor Frankl thought were important. I can't remember the second though mind you.  The first was to find a project and to do it. That doesn't mean your project has to be to write a NY Times Best Seller, but just to do something that means something. We often do things just for pleasure, but without meaning our lives just go on by and we lose our sense of direction. Find a project, do it with meaning, but  also let it be something that gives you pleasure. The third thing was to be  part of a  community and communicate. This is where communication with maybe God or with family, friends and neighbours comes is so important. Reach out and be a part of your community, have people over for dinner, go out and do something with your friends. Life will be richer and it  bring meaning into your life. Living for others not just yourself. Oh disclaimer I should have put first, this is very likely not an accurate account of what he said but this is what I got out of it. Thanks!

Also Casey and I were quite enamoured with the alien gracing the stage, that and we were desperate to pass the time until Switchfoot.

Kari Jobe was next, she was good as well for the most part  but I was rather focused on Don and then Switchfoot. It was time for the stage to be set up and to take a sneaky pic of the set list and freak out. Sarah we missed you!!!

The set list was as follows Say It Like You Mean It Stars Who We Are Gone Love Alone Is Worth The Fight This Is Your Life Your Love Is A Song Dark Horses Meant To Live Let It Out Mess Of Me When We Come Alive Dare You To Move The sweethearts came out and played three more songs Ba55 The Sound Where I Belong Jon was talking about all the people he's met and how people had come from CANADA and all over the States to see the concert WE FREAKED OUT. Jan was hilarious, practically Tackling Drew and Tim while they tried to play, ugh it was adorable. He and Drew were duelling guitars at one point and the string on his guitar broke and then the second one wasn't working (I don't know why though). They brought out his backup guitar  just in case, but he just went out in the crowd and sang or he bugged his little brother while he tried to rock his bass. I was sad they didn't play Saltwater after Casey told me they sound checked it earlier. But then BUT THEN THEY PLAYED THE SOUND OH MY GOD IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE I had to take a five second video to prove to myself that it was actually happening and I wasn't dreaming.

I just lost it air guitar, head banging, screaming and all.

Where I Belong,  and Jon made me cry. Thankfully he also made me laugh in the middle there because otherwise I would have been sobbing in front of my new friends. ON THE SHORES OF BABYLONNNNNNN

Last but not least we went to see a screening for Fading West. There was a five minute Q and A before it and the guys are totally adorable and so, so sweet of course. They called us crazy for staying up late and sitting on the floor to watch their movie. It was fun to watch it with people instead of alone in my room singing and crying and laughing to myself! It also made me even more desperate for b sidessss!!! The movie kind of died just when we got to bro am so we left then.

Thanks to Casey and her friends for being so wonderful to drive me back and for making the experience so wonderful. Thanks also to everyone else I met, Jared for the starburst and  Katie for being cool, and to everyone else I don't remember your names but you're awesome!!! THANKS!

Switchfoot came into my life in a big way, not too long ago, but they have saved my life many times.  My life has been wonderfully enriched and has changed so much. I've found so many new artists and wonderful human beings and I've made so many new friends and met so many incredible people. I can't thank Switchfoot and the Switchfoot Family  enough. But I'll say THANK YOU one more time.

So this is kind of Christian-y, but this song is amazing. I grew up Christian but don't really believe it now. Matthew West is one of two Christian artists I still listen to (down from like 100. I'm not kidding - I used to only listen to Christian music).

I love this song. I forget how powerful it is for depression/anxiety/letting things go.
