cristallo’s parents arent. great. in this au. we dont know much abt them in canon, so in canon i choose to imagine theyre really nice, but here? um. go be sick alone, please dont touch me

theyre rich enough to pay for the treatment, but they dont care enough to pay her visits. theyre considering cutting treatment off but theyre wealthy enough to be famous and criticized for letting their daughter die. they keep trying for kids. they want to get it right this time. once they do, the money can reasonably be reallocated to the better one.

centurion, contrary to a persona untouchable by anything, feels horrible for cristallo. centurion grew up with poor friends who died sick and young. she turns the coin over in her hands some days wondering what it could’ve done for them.

she doesn’t seem to be compatible with cristallo, at least to the timekeeper, so theyre rarely sent on missions. cristallo barely goes on operations, most of which are physically hazardous, and shes close mostly to the kids in her age range. but centurion makes an effort to get to know cristallo, who’s curious of centurions life.

a death dodging, world touring lady with white streaks in her hair is maybe the coolest woman ever to cristallo. sometimes she looks at her own hair and feels envy.

mocha said she gives cristallo souvenirs. i think this is absolutely right.

centurion and cristallo bond in the wilderness. usually eagle’s cristallo’s aid, but centurion volunteers. centurion is genuinely interested in what she has to say. shes the first adult to be really interested in cristallo’s dreams, aside from a nurse all those years ago. cristallo is very happy.

medpoc watches them. the sick girl has been an enigma since their arrival.

around this time medpoc offers cristallo experimental treatment. her parents sign off, because it’s pro bono, and they also don’t care. the fact that medpoc could help her is probably forgotten, and they barely check in again. (ty mocha medpoc brainrot suggesting medpoc)

this involves a lot of tests, outside the field of what cristallo’s done with human doctors. medpoc spends time with cristallo in wards at laplace or the room in the suitcase. medpoc and cristallo spend time together running labs and examining data.

cristallo doesn’t care that medpoc’s teeth are too sharp or their demeanor is too unplacable. she just thinks they’re brilliant.

centurion begins dropping by, out of curiosity and out of worry. they spend early mornings with medpoc and cristallo, medpoc braggadocious and prodigal in their abilities and cristallo gently laughing. at some point, it becomes routine to visit laplace and sling herself on the couch to listen to medpoc and cristallo.

it leeches into day to day life with vertin. medpoc and centurion spend time on missions together. centurions one of the only non laplace members who treats medpoc normally.

one idea we had was a fwb arrangement starts at some point in this timeline. you may thinj “not a great idea for theswtwo”. youre right!

the trio become friends, and close ones at that. centurion and medpoc bond as they trade coffee in the dawn before cristallo wakes up. they learn each other’s orders.

medicine pocket and centurion understand each other. nobody in the suitcase feels as invested as they do in cristallo. nobody else knows the way cristallo arranges her desk or the neat way she signs her names on waivers. centurion and medicine pocket know the other understands the other. it doesnt scare them (yet, lol)

(there’s also the fondness. two thrillseekers, as mocha said. centurion rants about her agents and leans on the couch and medpoc slouches in her desk chair and complains about the laplace coworkers and sometimes centurion smiles in a way that feels strange to watch and sometimes medpoc’s teeth glint in a way that captivates centurion)

medpoc, who has become more and more invested in this project, fascinated with cristallo’s condition, begins to conceive an experimental treatment that could in one fell swoop cure cristallo. her health is remarkably improving, little by little. this could save her earlier. (“or it could ruin all that progress,” vertin frowns. medpoc looks at her confusedly. “i’ve never failed like that before, timekeeper. have faith in me,” they tease, but the sick feeling doesn’t abate.)

medpoc has never lost a patient. their genius is scary, but uncontested.

also what if medpoc used the thing thats residue from the storm to save her,..

medpoc tells centurion about the treatment. it needs some funding, and laplace and cristallo’s parents refuse.

centurion assures her that she’ll make the money, and decides to go on her third world tour. she promises to write cristallo frequently.

medpoc begins putting more and more work into the treatment. it concerns vertin and sonetto, as well as most of the suitcase department.

medpoc half wants this because they want to cure cristallo, but also because this is becoming their magnus opus.

they send vertin to collect stormwater. vertin is worried.

cristallo is worried. medpoc hasn’t grinned in a while. centurion’s letters come less and less.

centurion writes one of her last letters to cristallo here. cristallo’s hopeful, but has always been afraid of surgery or truly experimental techniques. centurion promises medpoc and her will keep her safe. cristallo requested the coin, just so she could have a token from centurion aside from the knickknacks.

centurion writes back gently refusing.

her most beautiful trick is coming soon. she’ll sell so many tickets. cristallo will be fine soon.

the day of surgery comes.

medpoc is finally ready. they’re incredibly excited. vertin tries to step in, but she cannot interfere. centurion legally permitted this, and they’re technically her wards. vertin has to relent. sonetto trails afterward with a fearful gaze, both at medicine pocket and for cristallo. that night, vertin and sonetto wait in the timekeeper’s office until suddenly the beeps get louder and louder and there is the smell of blood and there is something wrong something is wrong something is wrong

something goes horribly, terribly wrong.

cristallo’s death happens one of two ways:

the surgery fails. the storm water suddenly reacts with something in her system, and suddenly cristallo’s heart is practically disintegrating. the last few seconds of her life, it is beating desperately and quickly, and medpoc is too slow to do anything. it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

the surgery fails, and they can’t tell yet. but something is obviously wrong. cristallo is feebler than she was five months ago. her body is failing slowly. medpoc refuses to believe it, until centurion returns and looks for cristallo in an empty suitcase.

she won’t stop crying, afterwards. her body was so cold.

and everything breaks.

nobody’s died in the suitcase yet. the rooms, which suddenly come into existence in flares and random occurence, lose one room.

or maybe it stays. centurion’s gifts become dusty.

centurion’s inconsolable.

medpoc is

they dont know what

theyve never failed like this before.

centurion signed off on the treatment. they’d spent time with medpoc undergoing legal processes so menial to save cristallo.

the coin jingles in her pocket.

medpoc did it.

the stormwater taunts her in the test tube

the house is so quiet.

vertin and sonetto have been waiting outside. medpoc cannot look into their eyes.
