We had a bit of an adventure today, but it is one for the telling, not writing! We have a beautiful man called Tom to thank, who helped us out of a jam at Menindee. So our Menindee day was a bit thwarted and we were not able to get really close to the lakes, although we could see the one closest to Menindee, but only at a distance. Menindee Lakes supply water to Broken Hill, the lower Darling and to water users along the Murray River in NSW, Vic and Sth Australia. An overflow system has been built for flood mitigation and domestic water use. This, in the middle of nowhere! As we drove out there, we saw the water pipe running adjacent to the road, just like the one along the road from Perth to Kalgoorlie. Totally amazing in both cases. Water birds flourish there (we saw hundreds of pelicans). I knew Menindee Lakes were important but I didn’t comprehend just how important.

Back in Broken Hill, we visited the Broken Hill Mining Memorial. What a confronting thing it is. Accidents by the dozens each year, especially in the 1800’s - “Fell down chute”; “Crushed by train”; “Smothered by gravel”; “Suffered a hernia, became infected”… on and on, such horrific accidents but I was very relieved to see that these accidents became less from about the ‘40s and now there is the odd year with 0 for the year. It is good that these people are being acknowledged but it was very confronting.

I'm visiting my hometown for the first time in 4 years, and so far I've:

Realized how much everything has changed while pretty much staying the same way

Sent a text to my estranged ex, asking her if we could go to a café and have a conversation after not seeing each other for the past 4 years (Sent the text at 4:44 P.M.; it's 1:00 A.M. right now, and she hasn't texted back)

Stayed and slept in the same room at my aunt's house where my paternal grandfather (with whom I never really established a proper relationship, and only knew from stories everyone told me) spent his last weeks suffering from a terminal illness and eventually passed away
