jotober, day 4: spell

The books had never warned her of this. 

Garen’s eyes were glowing an unearthly cyan that was almost too bright to look at. Rips and tears appeared in thin air, providing June with glimpses into galaxies as they flashed past. She felt weighed down, like her feet were pounds heavier than before, glued to the earth. Nearby, Leo collapsed, clawing at the stone road and looking up at Garen with fire in her eyes.

“What have you done?” 

June tried to take a step forward, but found it impossible. A smile spread across Garen’s lips as he lifted his hands skyward. 

Despite the sudden gravity, Piek seemed strangely unfazed, and the raven lifted off June’s shoulder, flying straight up. Shocked, she watched as he grew in size, his wings slowly melting into the starry night. 

“It’s just a spell,” he said, and though the bird was already circling high into the night sky, his voice was clear in her mind. “So break it.”
