the more i think about it the more intriguing the parallels with v'ger/tmp and later series are to me like there's

a technological lifeform that processes people for their information/capabilities and in doing so effectively kills them

a living machine made by humans that's aware of and pained by its inability to feel the way that humans do and wants to be closer to humanity

a vessel from earth flung far beyond space explored by humans at the time it was made that heads back home and learns massive amounts of incredible things on the way back

#p #DISCLAIMER that i do think (and think it's p clear in the show) that data has emotions from the start #that he just can't identify/that he doesn't experience exactly like other people. the similarity is there regardless #also already said something abt this and its looking back not forward but the Romantic Merging Of Self reminded me #of nomad and metamorphosis/cochrane and the cloud too #somewhat unrelated but i think the contrast of the second thing is prob what was intended by This Simple Feeling #i.e. that sense of coldness/incompleteness prompting spock to accept his whole self a little more #not incompatible w reading it as gay btw. again Accepting his whole self
