I studied spanish for two years on duolingo then they fucked up the website and I couldn't figure out busuu. in middle school I tried to learn russian but jesus christ that language is way harder than english.

oh thousands. I'm very scared of like society collapsing. when there's a wreck on the interstate and you see traffic stopped for miles oh god my bone marrow does something primal.

I don't feel at my best any particular time. my last few jobs have needed me to wake up way before dawn so that's just what I do now and I never really enjoyed staying up super late when I was younger because there's nothing to do at all. may as well just be awake during daylight hours.

Hey, it's me again! I was wondering how you got into studying Russian and with what material you started. Maybe you have some recommendations for me. I have one language learning app that connects grammar and vocabulary but I'd be glad t9 get to know alternatives!

Hi! 🌼 Russian was one of six language options from which I had to choose two to study for the whole course of my degree: English, Russian, Arabic, French, Spanish, German. English was my first choice.

Now, this answer sat in my drafts for a long time: I'm probably not the best person to give an answer to this question, as I'm not particularly liking Russian, and every time I tried to answer, it always looked like a rant. I think Russian is a beautiful language, and so is Russian culture, but I just couldn't get into it for academic reasons (too much pressure on passing exams, too little time to study, high expectations on the students' performances without providing enough resources to feel connected to the language). I'm even thinking about switching to French for these reasons.

But after thinking this answer through, and reflecting on my personal experience, I found I can give you some suggestions anyway:

Duolingo was a life saver for me. It allows you to learn at ypur own pace, very gradually, but still gives you enough new information per lesson, so that it truly feels like you're actively making progress and building your language skills;

grammatical cases and verb afixes are hard to study on textbooks – always pair a study session with a writing exercise, in which you can analyse the structures in-context;

get into Russian culture if you can – it can be a specific point in the Country's history that you find interesting, a hobby of yours in its Russian "variation" (for me, it was чай – tea), a social issue you're passionate about (climate change, women's rights, etc.) – you can't really study a language as if it was an entity on its own: it becomes sterile.

I hope this helps you, and that you'll have a lovely experience learning Russian! I've added the #russian langblr and #russian language tags, so that perhaps other learners will chime in and give you some more tips :)

I also know very very basic Mandarin. Not a lot. Briefly tried to use duolingo for french so i have a smattering of vocab in that language. I also once had a phase where i tried russian. I remember like. 2 phrases and nothing of the alphabet. Uh. I know some ASL? Like. 5-10 signs and fingerspelling only tho.
