Update Nov 16th: I have a massive summary rough draft for the first few chapters already produced, I just need to start pumping them out into balanced chapters formally and then pop some art out for each chapter. The story is exciting and great so far though so I'm still very excited just deciding on a look for Tommy as I do for all my head canons.

Analyzing things in ATSV part one

Okay so I have to be absolutely insane about Ganke for a bit, so this will probably take up several posts because screenshots/videos galore.... ermmmmm....

I'm going to start off by analyzing this piece of concept art

Taking a look at Ganke's tapestry on his wall, that absolutely looks like the CS:GO logo, just flipped and without the text. Ex:

Taking a look at more things on the walls as well:

1) who is doing this math. Is it Ganke? Is it Miles? Is it both of them? I like to think that is is Ganke writing things down and then coming back to them later, or, maybe Miles writes things down and Ganke corrects them/adds stuff.

2) I'm pretty sure that says deadly twins. Is this a game? Movie? A play on words? Makes me think of seven deadly sins, but I'm not too knowledgeable in the world of entertainment.

3) (not the jet) is this a schedule? Lunch schedule, perhaps? It's on the bulletin board in the final cut of their dorm as well, just redesigned. Has to be something school event related. It says "Spring 2023 Brooklyn ________ Academy." I can't make out the middle word.

4) I just like the little spider included in the drawing :3 Miles FOSHO draws all over the whiteboard all the time. I love it.

5) I love love LOVE the stickers he put on the drawers, and I'm guessing there also from video games, but again, not good with logos. If anyone knows though please tell me and I will put it on here.

6) I think it's neat that they have a poster of a bunch of cassette tapes on the door. That was definitely Miles's doing, as well as the record player that i found in there (it's his way of honoring Aaron.)

7) Peep the No Expectations drawing on Miles's side of the bunk. I love the little Easter eggs all over. This is so special to me. Makes me think of the Chekhov's gun principal that they did with the Spider in ITSV and are continuing in Across.

8) Ohhhhh so he's a soccer guy. I wonder if he likes the sport, players, or had played it himself. Maybe that's why he got buff, bit I doubt it (BRING ME BACK LOSER NERD CHUB GANKE)

9) Taking a look at the photographs that Ganke has and comparing them to what I could find in the final product. Ganke has a camera on his desk, so obviously he takes all of these himself, but we will get to that later.

10) This looks like a picture of himself to me. Self portrait. Look at that blurred out smile. It's either him, or one of his parents, but I'm guessing it's of himself. Did someone take that for him, or did he take it? Maybe it was Miles.

11) might again be a stretch, but it looks almost like two people leaning against each other. Headcanon that Ganke is just like Lilo and takes pictures of random people interacting for funsies (reminds me of them Gwen & Miles leaned on each other on the building but I have HIGH doubts it is that)

12) ..Again, just bullshitting here. But this reminds me of the scene from ITSV where Gwen and Miles first were introduced to each other. Could he totally off, but there were a lot of kids in the background that resembled and could have been Ganke. Who knows what that kid does in his free time. (I bet he has a lot of photos of Miles that he doesn't know about...)

13) i don't have any idea of what this could be but uhh.... we're open to discussion. Train???

14) Looks like a party. A school dance perhaps? Winter formal? Homecoming? Something. Reminds me of the Prom scene in Gwen's universe.

I absolutely love all the stuff they have in their dorm room for food. Those sillies!! Look at them! Eating dinner together! Fully equipped! Who owns this shit! Banking on Ganke owning most of it because like... just look at his fucking setup.

15) Here's that record player I was talking about!!!! I wonder if it's a brand new one of something Miles got when they went through Aaron's stuff after he died...

16) Coffee machine even though Ganke drinks like 7 energy drinks a day (this boys' coffee addiction is.... wow. Also personally I feel like Miles wouldn't really be too fond of coffee. Imagine if the caffeine messed with his venom strike and caused him to chock everything and himself a billion times lmao)

17) what is this???? Is this some kind of like.... portable burner, or something?????? So they can boil water/use a pan??????? If anybody knows it would be GREATLY appreciated.

18) We've seen the air fryer/rice cooker with googly eyes and I love that... oh, I bet that was Miles's doing. Maybe as a prank or a joke to mess with Ganke and they kept it. There's so much personality here.

19) ignoring the condiments for a moment- THEY AHVE A MINIFRIDGE???? DO THEY EVER NEED TO LEAVE THEIR DORM, ACTUALLY????? It almost looks like it has sparkling/seltzer water in it but.. gross. They really decked this place out, huh.

20) and in ITSV there's a microwave too. Everything to fuel Ganke's crippling chronically online illness.

21) SPRAY CANS!!!! Oh how wonderful. These are hidden/scattered throughout their finished dorm, too. I love that. I wonder if Ganke and Miles ever become delinquents and go off to graffiti stuff. (However, I don't see Ganke as being very artistic when it comes to things like that, so maybe he just tags along with Miles and acts as lookout.

22) FIDGET spinner!!!!!!! Oh boy. Oh boy. I know that these were a big thing a couple years back, but please consider... Audhd Ganke.... thank you.

23) is this an alarm clock? Radio???? Why do they need another source for music when they have like... three.. seperate ways.... okay.

24) You cannot convince me that this isn't Yoda. Or at least a similar character.. but I'm banking on Yoda. WHY DID THEY CHANGE SO MUCH STUFF THERE WAS SO MUCH PERSONALITY HEREEEEEEER

It's also his because it's leaning on his bed and there is a pretty clear separation of whose side of the room is whose.

For the most part, you know my al headcanons, but let's make some more hm? Hope you guys enjoy it!

No warnings, really just cute junk and alhaitham being alhaitham. Mabye a lil ooc. Plus spelling and grammar cause I suck at that

As i said before, I see alhaitham as autistic, so we'll be adding that a bit here

Alhaitham isn't super touchy. He can get a bit overwhelmed if he's touched too much. However, I do see him being a bit more willing with his partner, though PDA likely would be off the table.

Handholding would be fine for him if it makes you feel better, though not for very long, so I recommend pinky holding instead!

Look, it's cute as hell and isn't constantly squeezing his hand, so it works.

Or you could hold the back of his coat of even that is to much contact for him

Speaking of such things, alhaitham is likely someone who can hide when he's overstimulated VERY well, so you'll have to be able to read him very well to know when he's uncomfortable, as if he wouldn't just bluntly tell you to let go ether way.

A few tells would mainly be a slight change in his expression, from his more relaxed one to a more annoyed one, a twitch of his eyebrow or the corner of his mouth.

He'd get more fidgety, ether messing with his headphones, adjusting his clothes to much, ect.

In the game, we can see that he is a kind person, but also very blunt and doesn't feel any fear in telling people what he thinks. So don't get too upset if he so bluntly tells you your affection is a bit too much.

He may not be a very affectionate man but he still shows his affections in his own way, weather that be: allowing you to read his prized books, reading to you himself, letting you lean on him, teaching you bits of knowledge he has, ect. His affection more comes out in these simple actions.

He's fairly knowledgeable on quite a few topics, so if you ask him questions about them, he'd be happy to answer them even if his expressions seem more 'annoyed' then happy.

If he doesn't know an awnser, he'll tell you so, but be sure to research the topic later so he can answer said question.

This is how he shows his love lol.

His love language is more-so quality time/ parallel play in which you're each doing your own thing nearby

On a more general alhaitham note, he mainly gets overstimulated by too much or too loud noise, which he uses his headphones to cancel out.

He likely would know sign, for moments where he ether deafened his headphones or just decides not to speak. This just helps him keep himself from that overstimulation.

He also stims in more subtle was, fidgeting with a loose thread on his clothes, tapping his fingers together, messing with a loose strand of hair (his or yours depending on how close your relationship is and how long your hair is) or just tapping his foot.

He can handle confrontation easily on his own, so no need to worry when someone bothers him about his habits sense hell eeasily shut them down with no problem.

I see him as getting more frustrated if anyone attempts to talk over him or baby him. He is a grown man. Doing these things is more likely to annoy him than make him feel relieved.

This doesn't mean he hates you defending him completely. He'd just rather not be treated like a child or as if he can't speak for himself.

Alhaitham wouldn't be a bad partner. Honestly, he's attentive and very loyal. You'd just have to be able to handle his lack of touchyness and just overall blunt attitude.

holy shit you guys i'm not even a hermitcraft or dsmp blog rn. fair enough this is a longstanding conspiracy theory of mine, though. ok, so. Joe Is Techno's Hels, the not-an-essay (mainly because i'm not going to cite SHIT, this is PURELY in the realm of headcanon/theory except if i explicitly indicate something is supported by canon)

so, the joke theory starts like this: back when hermitcraft/dsmp crossovers were first getting popular, there were a lot of crack theories about "hels!joe is technoblade" because... well, a lot of factors. they're both loosely english majors (i know joe is a history major just humor me), both slightly strange guys who operate by their own logic, both have somewhat similar (ish?) accents, both have a very deadpan sense of humor and incredible delivery on that deadpan, and most of all both of them Cannot Be Killed In A Way That Matters.

however, i am your local Hels Analyst, no like seriously there's so much weird shit about helsknight we haven't discussed yet, and one (implied? this is a theory but i feel it holds water) thing that's always been key to me about Hels versions is... they represent bad traits present in the original individual. whether or not those bad traits are the Objectively Bad ones or the traits the original self-identifies as bad is pretty up in the air right now (welsknight come off anon i just need you to tell me if helsknight likes pineapple on pizza it is absolutely fucking critical to our understanding of hels lore) but we'll be going with the latter, for reasons i'll explain later and by later i mean right now.

so! assuming there are hels versions of more players than just welsknight (i cannot stress enough how much we technically don't know this in canon -- it can reasonably be extrapolated but we really aren't sure!), that brings up an interesting issue with techno being joe's hels.

joe is not a particularly violent person.

"well, strawman i have made up to make this long-ass post more visually broken-up and less formal-feeling," i reply, "hels versions of players only exhibit traits that are present in the original person." and this is confirmed canon, by the way -- wels himself has explicitly cited specific ways he can sometimes suck that are directly visible in the way helsknight acts!

so. joe is not a particularly violent person, and... okay yes listen i know there's a lot of very good writing on how technoblade isn't entirely 100% down for violence all the time and maybe wants to peacefully retire, okay. i get it. i am not calling techno a murder machine all i'm saying is that one of them enjoys pvp enough that he helped train other people and the other one is recording as he always does from nashville tennessee. i am a variety mcyt blogger and the only dsmp essay i have ever written before now is about how the tftsmp metaplot parallels redstoner. just bear with me.

imo joe also exhibits a lot of self-awareness about his own bad qualities as a character, and none of those traits are really... present in technoblade? but here's where it gets interesting.

i am no genius and certainly no master c!technoblade analyst, but if we assume technoblade trained to become a fighter and identified certain of his traits as being Not Ideal for someone who focuses on pvp and being a strong pigman, we can. kind of see those traits in joe, even if we can assume technoblade has learned enough to stop displaying those traits:

will commit to the bit even if it's inconvenient for him

obnoxious about whatever form of literature is closest to him

will start quoting from that work of literature to fit the situation even when it totally doesn't fit the situation

zero bloodlust and an active need to avoid direct conflict; a tendency towards pacifism even

malicious compliance

perfectly timed awful timing

overwhelming amounts of Just Some Guy and also English Major energy

exceedingly stubborn and would rather go through a problem than around it; will also see a tunnel through a mountain and climb over the hill instead

and. hm! yeah that feels like a joe hills description. you could make a joe hills out of this. add to that the fact that both of them refuse to die, but technoblade never dies whereas joe conquers death by dying over and over and coming back repeatedly out of sheer spite -- yeah i'd say joe could very easily be seen as the hels of the two.

and if Hels, the dimension, is the hostile and horrible place that helsknight claims it is -- where "everyone's unyielding and everyone there rebels" -- well, only one of them has a (mostly) canonical backstory that involves struggling through a hellish landscape designed by a hostile architect who wishes to cause pain and suffering. and it's not technoblade.

☆ I came to post some Jane's Headcanons here because I decided to draw her and I came up with some really good ideas. Creepypasta, even if I left for a while, always comes back and doesn't move forward lol! I hope that if you stay to read until the end, and like it, comment something to help me improve or correct mistakes! If you want to share yours or things like that, that would be perfect too ^^3 I'm not a big account, I just like to share kkakaka. ☆

JANE VAUGHN

☆ Well, in my Jane headcanons, she originally ended up being one of Jeff's victims, but she was always very "vigilante" and it turns out that after everything that happened she ended up hating Jeff (I promise to write more in depth about it sometime, it's still very shallow)

☆ Jane started working for the police as a kind of "help" for the local police, she searched for criminals that the police couldn't find or who hadn't left any traces. She was extremely good at what she did, she was totally cautious about everything she had planned, together with her wife Mary Vaughn she looked for them to be able to arrest them or in some cases kill them!

☆ Somehow one of the cases followed by the FBI reached Jane's ears, an "unpredictable" killer who had never been found, there were no clues and no victims who survived his attacks. Most died the same way, but a few specific ones died in grotesque ways, Jane did not fail to spurn her superiors who somehow managed to contact the FBI. After a long time of conversation Jane managed to get an entry into the case so she could enter as a "detective" she already knew who was committing the murders but just wanted to confirm.

☆ After a few months, Jane had already realized that Jeff was really the one they were looking for, and it was no surprise to her that they were making slow progress, so she tried to help them in a way that would not hinder her own investigation. She was not very socially active, she only spoke a lot when necessary, and was extremely formal with the others. She communicated more directly with her wife.

☆ Jane manages to have a lot of contact with those she trusts. I would say that apart from Mary, perhaps her closest relatives are her in-laws or her sister.

☆ Jane keeps in touch with Liu because they are both looking for Jeffrey, she will definitely need Liu and he will need her, they both have agreements, nothing personal, just work.

•Well, it was super short, but I hope you liked it. It was kind of a preview in case I write the full story of my headcanon! I really base it a lot on the version where she met Jeff as a teenager, but they were neighbors, not close friends. Jane was really affected. If I have the courage, I can post my hand-drawn version of her on Thursday! (I'll do it traditionally and then I'll transfer it to digital, with a lot of effort, lol)

Infinite Blue LIs x Reader. No mentions of reader pronouns or gender. Also posted on Ao3 here.

Alexei:

Has journals full of thoughts and observations about anything and everything. Some of his writing is illegible and other parts make no sense to anybody but him because it's literally his runaway train of thoughts dumped onto paper. He sticks post-it notes with diagrams between the pages, jots down excerpts from Wikipedia pages, and overall it's not an aesthetic read... But flipping through can give you an idea of how this super genius's brain works.

He also writes about you in these notebooks, albeit they're written in between stuff like the thirty-seven fun facts of siphonophores and his favorite part of last night's dinner. Many of them are things you’ve never even noticed about yourself like the way you hold the steering wheel while driving. This is also where he'll stick date memorabilia, like movie tickets. (this hc was inspired by this fic by @sailxrmxrs <3)

If you two own a saucer chair or some other small round comfy seat, he'll probably fall asleep in it at least once. He curls up, all 5'10" of him tucked in that tiny space. Naturally, his body hurts when he wakes up and therefore he gets a bit grumpy. So next time if you see him dozing off maybe lead him to the couch or the bed so he can stretch comfortably.

Brooklyn:

I want to imagine that he has a closet only for his clothing irons and ironing boards. Like a fucking broom closet and you open it to see that there's those four boards and a dozen irons. These include vintage clothing irons, restored and repurposed. He knows how to use them and take care of them too. Why does this make me laugh so hard.

Clothes shopping. Take this man clothes shopping. Yes, he'll buy you anything but honestly? Even disregarding that it’s a fun time because he would enjoy discussing outfits, and if your taste isn't the same as his business-academia-formal style he could be convinced into trying an outfit you styled, or vice versa. Also he's a total simp every time you step out of the changing room. Need fit pics? He's got you covered.

Something tells me Brooklyn would enjoy snacks and desserts from around the world. He'd love to make them himself (and with you!), but you could just come home with some mitarashi-dango because your local Asian supermarket was having a sale and he's already cracking open the container for the ceremonial-grade green tea leaves.

Leo:

Leo's our favorite gamer guy, but I think he also enjoys jigsaw puzzles whether they be with his friends or you or both. These are the quiet nights where everyone is focusing, intently staring at the puzzle sitting on the coffee table while aimlessly chatting. It's super peaceful, though sometimes time slips by unnoticed and by the time you all finish it's two in the morning.

Does that thing where you put someone in a shopping car, sprint across the parking lot while pushing said cart, then jump on it while it's moving. He does it with his friends, you, and his future kid (albeit with a lot more caution). He really wants to kiss you while he’s doing it too, but maybe not because what happens if he hits a car, or worse, someone else?

While we're on the topic of transportation and kisses, every time you're sitting shotgun and he pulls the car in reverse he'll put his hand on your seat and lean in to kiss you. Every. Single. Time.

Kiss him first. It'll get him flustered. Do it.

Milo:

I want to believe he really likes having his hair brushed. If you ask him about it he'll never admit it beyond a quick affirmative, but anytime you sit behind him and start to gently run the bristles through his tangles, he could feel himself relaxing. It's soothing. He might fall asleep like that.

Milo would own a 3d printer. I have no definitive reasons why. Vibe check says he owns a 3d printer and will print out cool little knickknacks and give them to you without a word because they either help you in a mundane way (like a toothbrush holder), or he'll print out something cute like a tiny frog with a mushroom hat because he likes seeing your face light up.

Or he'll print out something cursed, like that Thomas the Tank Engine bottlecap where the liquid streams out of the eyes. It's a coin toss every time.

Rory:

Was that one kid reading with a flashlight under the covers. Even now that he's older, he likes to get a bed light and read before bed. Sometimes he gets super engrossed in it and you gotta peel that book off him. He’ll complain. Stand your ground. Otherwise he'll be super sleep-deprived and cranky the next morning.

If his future child also turns out to be an avid reader, he'll secretly change out their flashlight batteries. Or get them a night light with some half-baked excuse of, "so you don't turn on all the lights when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and wake the entire house up." Sure, Rory.

Speaking of sleep-related things, he really likes it when you fall asleep next to him/on him. His expression melts into the softest smile and he'll pull you in tightly. Has terrible handwriting but an impeccable signature. Don't ever ask him to write the grocery list because it takes forever to decipher his chicken scratch, but he'll sign stuff for fans in one fluid stroke, and that shit looks clean. And yes, he'll offer to sign something for you too.

Loves it when he's chilling on the couch after a long day and you flop on top of him. He'll happily be your teddy bear and let you lay there for hours, the two of you chatting and watching TV while he rubs soft circles on your back. Feel free to fall asleep like that too.

But I'm more than happy to write more about him, so here I go!

I love how composed he always is, that he has this formality about him, but that underneath it you can sense the playful side. He's such a tease, too. And I love the way he likes to take care of people. He has a depth to him and I feel like he knows so much more than he ever says. He always notices everything, nothing gets past him. He has that quietly powerful thing going on, too. Like he's content to stay in the background, to be more of a supporting role, but when he does step in, he takes care of whatever the problem is like it's nothing. He doesn't need to show off his power or demonstrate it or anything because everybody just already knows.

I'm also in love with his design... the tail, the teal, the butler outfits, it's just such a great aesthetic!

I kinda headcanon that Barbatos's pact is what makes Solomon immortal. I know in the OG someone said something about Solomon messing up a potion and accidentally making himself immortal which is hilarious and on brand for Sol. But I just think it'd be really interesting if making a pact with Barbatos made the human in that situation immortal. Since he has time powers and everything. And then if he ever made a pact with MC... well, there's the whole sad mortal MC dying early problem solved lol.

I love thinking about her and I STILL HAVE SOME TIME BEFORE IT'S NOT HER BIRTHDAY!

These are random because I'm trying to remember the ones I've talked to my friends about. I've never actually listed out headcanons before LOL

I think that (starting in Skypiea after Sanji gave her that flower) she presses flowers/flora from all the different islands they visit, much like how Nami keeps a detailed log.

My friends and I have joked that she texts like she is writing a very formal email and I just think that would be very charming. (Like she starts a casual text with a "Dear Franky," and everyone just goes along with it because it's endearing).

Okay this one is anime only, but I like to think that she started drawing after she met and grew attached to Soran from her time in Tequila Wolf since we don't see her draw until after the time skip. I think she drew some of the crew when she was missing them a lot during their two year separation. Now she keeps doing it because it's a fun little hobby! She and Usopp bond over it like they do gardening!

You can find my ramblings and theories for Robin and Luffy being siblings here. I just think they spend a lot of time together in their down time, she's very endeared by her peculiar little captain. He lets her steal his hat sometimes or she will absolutely play keep-away with it to keep him entertained if necessary for the crew.

Less of a headcanon and more just something that's true, but I think about it a lot, is that she absolutely still has bangs after the timeskip they are just grown out/pulled back (she has them sideswept in several color spreads and in Dressrosa). The headcanon part is that I think she did this to try and change up her appearance to avoid immediate detection (her bangs are prominent in both of her pre-ts wanted posters), though this is rendered moot upon her post-Dressrosa poster.

I think she absolutely still Dereshishishishi's as an adult when she's distressed, we just don't see it because the Straw Hats bring her so much genuine joy she's rarely down for long. I imagine she has bad days that we don't see, though.

Supposing Frobin is real and true like it is, I think that she gravitates toward him because he is so good at genuinely making her laugh (on top of his kindness and all of his many positive qualities) and he reminds her of Saul. Even in a non-shipping sense, I think that he and the other Straw Hats embody that "laughing brings you joy" that Saul was all about, and that's neat (again not really a HC, just a thing I like).

I think after Long Ring Long Land she enjoys skating and I think that they should go to a roller rink, it would be fun. I'm right about this one and Oda/Toei should listen to me.

IF there was an in-universe equivalent of The Lord of the Rings, she would be the biggest fan and know every piece of lore possible. Chopper has absolutely heard everything about it at least twice - happily!

Brook is to Robin as Usopp is to Nami, except Robin goes really hard on the "playful meanness." Brook is fine with this, I imagine. They are simply besties.

She's into the drama. She loves to hear the gossip, but is rarely involved. Yes she will eavesdrop. Yes she will stir the pot.

She pranks with the best of them, she's just harder to catch!

Robin likes to thrift shop rather than buy brand name stuff because she likes the idea that the clothes and things have a story. This will explain her many eclectic fashion choices, but she still manages to slay. Nami prefers the name brand stuff because now they can afford it. She and Nami have a lot of fun dressing the crew.

A lot of characters go to her when they're sad (to which she appreciates feeling needed/wanted) and she is like the best at comforting since it's something she had to do for herself for so long! Alternatively, she could also be really bad at it and is too morbid for some. It depends on the situation.

She is very touch starved - not in a romantic or sensual sense either, she just very much relies on touch based on the nature of her powers (she can feel everything, but rarely is it like. a fun time). So she likes genuine contact from others (hugs, handshakes, high fives, sitting close, etc) but does not know how to initiate a lot of the time so she ends up not always getting the affection she craves BUT as she opens up more I imagine she'd be able to communicate that with others (especially Franky!)

Confirmed secret theater kid. Absolutely can sing and will sing, but it's rare. Brook and her often duet.

Despite slyly establishing your territory snug against his own, you have never once dropped by his private villa to see him and your biweekly reports over the phone are short and impersonal

He can't bring himself to meet you without a formal reason so he makes shit up about a spontaneous conference between capos that you're obligated to join

Every capo of Passione is now in his secondary villa and he's stuck interviewing and chatting up every one of them until he finally makes it to you

You conduct yourself far too professionally for his tastes and you often attempt to break free from his company once the conversation steers from business to personal

As you turn to leave, he impulsively grasps your hand, his uncertain eyes pleading to yours

He asks why you've been distant and wonders if he's done something wrong to upset you

Your reaction is so sweet that she can't help the blush that spreads across her cheeks and ears

Now she takes extra care to pay you a compliment instead of an insult when you notice a new change in her looks lest she loses your precious attention again

When you rbed my vampire psych post, you tagged something about Armand’s “trauma hole.” I must know - what is Armand’s Trauma Hole? Devastate me, Kacy.

I WANNA SAY BEFORE I START btw if I had money and wasn’t in the US I’d go to college for psychology strictly to write vampire meta lmfao but yknow what, I don’t have a formal education and I just listen to a lot of psych podcasts and I AM, MYSELF, SOMEONE WITH A TRAUMA HOLE so that’s my qualifications here LOL. 

So I have sort of a running headcanon called The Trauma Hole Theory and like it’s not completely solid so don’t take my word on this but it’s a fun thought experiment.

It comes down to two questions: Do vampires have neuroplasticity? and: Does The Blood know to fix neurological differences? *

*(This point in particular is a whole separate topic because I’d said that the vampires’ neurobiology IN ITSELF makes them neurodivergent, as in, operating differently from the average human. But neurodivergence isn’t a thing that needs to be healed or cured, simply a difference in structure, but I wonder if The Blood categorizes differences in brain structure due to trauma as an injury?)  

And the thing is like, we’re never going to have an answer because it’s not something Anne planned around. Even like starting with the Mayfair books and going into all her weird cosmic questions in her later life she always talked about biology & medicine like it was magic LOL so who knows. I wish I’d had the chance to ask her this!

But to be more specific, I need to know: Is the Blood able to cure what’s wrong with your brain, or does it freeze your brain exactly how it is?

I can make arguments for both because there isn’t an answer in canon and if you start fine combing you’re going to find a lot of conflicting evidence. We can also handwave this away as “the Dark Gift is different for everyone!”

Claudia is one of my favorite examples to look at, because we have to ask: Is she a monster because she doesn’t remember being human or is it because her brain development got frozen where she wasn’t awesome at empathy yet? A lot of studies say children have empathy by the time they’re 4, so maybe she’s in the clear! But how much of her early life and development were stunted by malnourishment?

This also gets into the canon that some of the vampires who were turned younger are a bit wilder, less impulse control, etc. Lestat, as an example of a permanent 20 year old with poor decision making faculties, vs. Marius who although sometimes cruel, has the patience to play the long game. In canon it often gets framed that it’s about the deeper experience of being human but I wonder a lot about how it interacts with brain structure. I’d also ask how much of this is simple behavior that they can learn to correct if they want to. Like, is CBT effective for vampires if there’s nothing physically wrong with their brains? 

(Anyway I need a psych degree to understand more about how brains work and like, the nuances of how undead vampire brains work where they still clearly FUNCTION but like, I need to know which parts are frozen, how their emotions work, why do they have super photographic memories and telepathy and new powers but we assume their prefrontal cortex is stuck at their mortal age of development how does that affect the overall brain function!?!?! I'm making shit up to fit my angst headcanon needs to don't @ me LOL.) ((Hekate you in particular should weigh in with your headcanons bc you're smarter about this stuff than me!!!!!! I'm just a lowly angst headcanon troll!!!))

So anyway like, trauma causes neurological damage/structural changes to the brain. It reshapes your ability to see logic. I’m sure if you’re having sort of acute panic in the moment of being turned, and your amygdala is poppin and your brain is full of cortisol, maybe the Blood takes care of that because it’s temporary. But when you look at someone like Armand, who had endured years of trauma before he was turned, I wonder how much of that more complex/long term trauma is just wired into his brain.

SO THE TRAUMA HOLE AND THE QUESTION ABOUT NEUROPLASTICITY IS:

If the Blood fixed Armand’s brain where it was, can he ever truly heal from it? 

There’s a thing in real life with HUMANS recovering from trauma that sometimes we are so unable to accept that Things Are Okay that we’re constantly on guard or create problems. If Armand permanently has that space in his head telling him that it’s dangerous, that something is wrong, that people are using him; is he always going to find ways to fill that hole and create drama?

Living in squalor for 300 years in a cult felt like a way to stay with this feeling, to not allow himself to even try for safety and happiness. In the Theatre, even trying to be better, he still allowed himself to partake in atrocities. 

And with Daniel? Gradually allowing himself to feel things even though he’d been reckless with his pet? But really trying? 

Even after finally turning Daniel it became a self-fulfilling prophecy; he believed he wouldn’t be a good maker and I have to wonder if he actually tried or if he just allowed that anxiety to dictate his behavior.

In Trinity Gate it’s like he’s doing his best to be domestic but still takes this role of running the household and keeping everyone safe. He’s got these crazy secure crypts in the basement. He’s the only one who wants to kill the replimoids. 

Marius tells him that he has the ✨savage & ignorant soul of a child✨ AND ?????? HE’S NOT WRONG? EXCEPT IT’S SUCH A SHITTY WAY TO PUT IT. He’s just still very much his wounded inner child trying to navigate danger at all times. 

CBT could still work on vampires, I think, in terms of teaching them a set of rules to follow. It wouldn’t be unlike teaching them to mask. But if it’s not something that can be healed, we can always assume that if Armand is behaving, he’s just going through the motions for the benefit of the people he loves, and not that he’s less hurt and uncomfortable on the inside.

Probably not. I’m okay with my chat posts and non-fictional PSAs/advice posts being reposted to other platforms (with credit). Probably not, sorry! I’d like to say that I could, and I try to tag major triggers & spoilers when I remember to, but again, ADHD means I tend to be pretty scattered brained and my tagging is pretty inconsistent as a result. I do not take formal requests or requests for unrelated fandoms/characters/etc. I love talking with people and discussing ideas, but that’s entirely on my own terms. You can still always ask me about my AUs or offer specific ideas, but if I decide to write anything for it is all up to me.

Hi! I just read your post on Azula and diagnosing her and/or other fictional characters with mental illness. I really appreciated the read.

As a person who has struggled with mental illness and a neurodivergency called NVLD (similar to ASD and ADHD, but neither), I find it very important to be careful with mental health headcanons and avoid ableism. I really enjoy researching many different things related to psychology, primarily using peer reviewed articles and print sources. I did develop a headcanon that Azula would be diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder after the age of eighteen, based on the research I did and on personal experiences I have had with people I knew with the disorder. I can see why people would disagree with this headcanon and that’s valid. I want to make sure I’m not being careless in any way, shape, or form.

Ableism is something that has impacted me very, very negatively in my own life. I’ve had very distressing and stressful experiences due to people fundamentally misunderstanding neurodivergency and mental illness. I often struggle too because I can “pass” as neurotypical and without mental illness, so people tend to assume the worst when I miss social cues or act out when I’m stressed. One of the many things that drew me to Azula as a character is that I could relate to her inner conflicts, traumas, and emotions and feeling like I had to prove myself to people in order to be valued. And…the last thing I’d want to do is extend any ableism towards Azula in my writing of her in my fics. She is twenty when she is diagnosed with BPD in a modern setting with a trained psychologist. But I want to still be careful.

Sorry this is a long, rambly ask. My question would be: am I going about this in a healthy and respectful way or is there something I need to do differently?

Hi! I totally respect wanting to be careful with mental illness/neurodiverse headcanons, but I definitely want to make it clear that the point of that post wasn't to tell people to never headcanon Azula as having some type of mental illness- especially mentally ill/neurodiverse people themselves. To me it sounds like you've really thought about this and have done far more research than most people would- looking at peer reviewed articles is already impressive for someone not in an academic field!

BPD Is a tough diagnosis, not because the disorder is some big bad scary thing, but because it's gotten a really bad rap over the years. I've had a lot of experience working with BPD clients since making that post, and it's always a hard diagnosis to give because there's so much stigma around it. I've spent many an hour now with patients just explaining the disorder and how I personally think about it in context of the individual person's life experiences/trauma history/early attachment relationships. And it overlaps with complex trauma a lot. So much so that the woman who first conceptualized C-PTSD (Judith Herman, absolute queen) acknowledges that many C-PTSD patients also meet criteria for BPD.

(C-PTSD is still not a formally recognized diagnosis so a lot of those patients end up with a BPD diagnosis anyway cuz that's what's in the book...)

Anyways, it sounds to me like you're doing the work to treat this diagnosis and Azula's character as respectfully as possible. I don't think there's any reason Azula couldn't, in theory, develop BPD, especially in a modern AU setting where I'm assuming fighting in the war isn't part of the story. BPD is a much more likely outcome to child abuse than a psychotic disorder for sure (though both are possible.) It's certainly far more likely than the other personality disorders fandom likes to give her. So I think keep doing what you're doing and you'll be just fine.
