I'm obsessed with this essay.
This quote is its thesis: deep reading is uncommon, and good, and its impact is visible in the people who do it. I clicked on the link because I was curious about what else the author had to say, and also because I didn't want to be one of those adults who don't read. That sounds bad, and what Henderson promises sounds good: subtlety! weaving! various domains!
I was not prepared for what I found.
The first thing Henderson gives you is a picture of some books:
Tumblr media
Immediately, you gasp: Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Mao Zedong! The Cold War, the Third Reich, ancient Rome! Such staggering complexity and variety!
Perhaps you notice Henderson's own book in this pile. How impressive, that he's read his own book! How does the man do it???
If you're clamoring to know, you're not alone. "People sometimes ask me, 'Rob, how do you read so much?'" he explains modestly, so he thought it would be useful to make an essay entitled "How I Read."
The answer?
One page at a time, like anyone else:
Readers and Twitter/X followers see how frequently I post my readings or see my recommended books and assume there must be a secret. There’s no secret. Years ago, I read How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler. He described reading a book as being “in conversation” with the author. But reading has the added benefit of allowing you to concentrate deeply, move as fast or as slowly through an argument or idea as you want, and formulate and reformulate your thoughts as you move through the text. In a given year, I read about 40-50 books cover to cover, read excerpts and chapters of perhaps another 100 or so, and skim many more. I also read psychology papers and other academic texts. I read multiple books concurrently. Typically 2 or 3 physical books I cycle through, with one I devote most of my attention to. I also have 2 other books I read on the Kindle app on my phone. Waiting in line at the store. In between sets at the gym. Traveling on the train or an uber. All this time adds up. You can spend 5 or 10 minutes scrolling, or read a couple of pages of a good book. I recommend the latter.
He's so brilliant that people assume he must be naturally gifted, but he's actually a humble book-looker. Here is a number of books he has read. Here is another number of chapters. Here is the only reference he makes to Adler's text--one of the pile--and it's a weighty one: a reader is in conversation with the author. Oh, how thrilling! Aren't you excited to see how he's in conversation with all these authors and their "complex and intricate" ideas? He converses with them in between sets at the gym, just FYI.
This section also introduces his thesis: reading is good because it allows you to "concentrate deeply.”
Also, "scrolling" is worse than reading. This is very important. Anything besides reading is worse than reading. Twitter is worse. Audiobooks are worse.
Henderson's proof? A Twitter quote about audiobooks:
What about audiobooks? I like this post from Naval Ravikant:
Tumblr media
He’s right.
I love this comparison because drinking your vegetables is famously also good for you. It's just fine, if that's how you'd like to get your greens! How beautiful to live in a world where we can drink kale smoothies.
Not so, for Henderson:
Reading requires a lot of effort and practice. Hearing language versus reading it engages different mental processes. Reading forces you to move more slowly. If an author explains an idea to you, the constraints of natural conversation mean that you can’t just pause for 10 minutes while you think deeply about what he or she just said and then subsequently resume the discussion. Books enable you to do that. Of course, you can pause on audiobook and think about what the author just said. Often, though, listening to audiobooks is accompanied by other tasks, making it harder to devote 100% of your attention to the ideas being discussed or the story being told. Listening to audiobooks is easier. And it’s better than nothing. But if you want to seriously engage with ideas and increase the likelihood that you’ll retain knowledge, it’s better to read.
Audiobooks are bad because people don't engage with them. They don't pause and think about what the author said, because they're too busy doing Other Tasks while they listen. This is what all people who listen to audiobooks are doing everywhere all the time. No one who listens to audiobooks does so because it's actually easier for them to process the information that way. They only listen to avoid processing the information. The solution to this is not to engage deeply with audiobooks but not to listen to audiobooks.
Audiobooks, like TV, movies, and podcasts, are not kale but "junk food," Henderson claims, by way of a quote from a Medium essay (Medium informs me it is an 8-minute-read).
He does, of course, listen to podcasts, but they're not the same thing as reading, which he proves by quoting a podcast:
Dwarkesh Patel: Okay. Let me ask a meta question. What do you think podcasts are for? What is happening?
Tyler Cowen: To anaesthetize people? To feel they're learning something? To put them to sleep. So they can exercise and not feel like idiots. Occasionally to learn something. To keep themselves entertained while doing busy work of some kind...
Dwarkesh Patel: Okay, but is your own podcast a complement to actual intellectual inquiry?
Tyler Cowen: I don't assume that it is. I think of it as a very high-class form of entertainment.
“Very high-class form of entertainment.” More flattering than “junk food.”
Finally, Janan Ganesh writes:
"People are willing to do almost anything other than read at length...At the same time, no one relishes being ignorant or incurious...One way of squaring these opposing impulses is to give things that aren’t books the intellectual status of books."
The Ganesh quote is from an article from the Financial Times, which I can't access because I haven't paid for a subscription. This will become more relevant in a bit.
Right after these quotes is when we get the original excerpt. Henderson waxes on about the importance of reading. Nothing can replace it. Podcasts etc. can only supplement it: "So if I’m reading a book by, say, Melissa Kearney, I’ll also listen to her interviews. This helps the information to stick."
What information, you might wonder? How does the interview help it stick? He doesn't say. Kearney is in his list of books, though, so he's engaged deeply with her work. Elsewhere.
He does, however, engage in some detail with James Clear, author of the book at the bottom of his pile:
If you’re just starting out, focus on building habit first. In Atomic Habits, James Clear writes, “If you show up at the gym 5 days in a row—even for 2 minutes—you're casting votes for your new identity. You’re not worried about getting in shape. You’re focused on becoming the type of person who doesn’t miss workouts.”
The same goes for reading. In the beginning, don’t focus on volume. Don’t focus on trying to read a specific book in a specific amount of time. Focus instead on the concrete and the practical. For example, each day you could schedule a time to sit down and read at least ten pages. If that’s too much, try five. If that’s too much, then start with one page. Then go from there.
In my case, I wake up in the morning and read as I drink coffee. This is how I start the day. I tell myself I’ll read at least 25 pages (it used to be 15 in grad school).
Clear breaks down a goal into an approachable practice: if your goal is to be in shape, focus on creating a habit of going to the gym, even if only for two minutes.
Henderson's recommended habit is similarly practical: read, even if only for a little bit (perhaps a mere 15 pages--his grad school number, in case you didn't know he went to grad school).
But what is his goal?
Henderson praises reading as a way to engage with "complex and intricate" ideas--an engagement so complex it apparently can't be replicated in another medium--but when he breaks it down, reading is a numbers game. "In the beginning, don't focus on volume," he advises. Start with a small number. Later, if you persist, it will become a bigger number.
How do you pick what to read? How do you take notes on a text? What do you do after you "pause if [you] encounter an especially interesting passage or idea?" Henderson is not interested in answering these questions, at least not in an essay entitled "How I Read."
His advice, after "read at least ten pages," is not to download games or social media on your phone. In fact, the smartest idea is to have two phones, a normal and reasonable thing to do. He gets this idea from a tweet:
Or experiment with variants of George Mack’s cocaine phone and kale phone strategy, wherein he carries his “kale phone” most of the time and only allows himself access to his “cocaine phone” at specific points in the day:
• Kale Phone - Full stack serotonin. Only notes, Kindle, Uber, Maps, and emergency number for 2-3 people to call. • Cocaine Phone - Full stack dopamine. Twitter. Instagram. TikTok. WhatsApp. Anyone can contact.
To be fair, Henderson allows that not everyone has two phones money, or even books money. He has suggestions there as well:
What about money? For me, books are similar to food. A necessity. Even when I was broke, I still bought books and still read a lot. When I was a kid, before I started making my own money, I regularly visited the school library and the local library. My teachers were sometimes confounded by me because I never did homework and generally earned poor grades but would understand references they made to books they hadn’t assigned to class. Nowadays, if I see a book that interests me, I always just buy it. The upside of interesting and useful new information vastly outweighs the downside of being out $20 or $30 dollars. Sometimes I buy books and they turn out to be uninteresting or fail to hold my attention. I place it in a pile. Every couple of months, once the stack reaches around 6-10 books, I’ll then donate them to a local used book seller. He allows me to trade them for 1 or 2 used books from the store. If I couldn’t afford books, I’d spend much more time at the library. I’d download them from libgen. I’d physically steal them if I had to.
The important thing is to acquire the books. The best way to do this is by buying them, but other methods are acceptable if you can't drop $20-30 whenever. Steal if you have to. The important thing is to have a pile of books, because then you can take a picture of it.
That's maybe unfair of me to say. It's not, after all, what Henderson says, just what he shows. What he says is that volume is necessary to find meaning:
I don’t finish every book I start. I skim. I’ll read a chunk of a book, place it on my shelf, and then pick it up two years later and continue. There have been a couple of occasions where I’d read the first page of a book, found it dull, and donated it. More than a year later, I bought it again, and read the whole thing in a few days. Sometimes, you have to be ready for a book. Most of what you read won’t be especially interesting or insightful. You have to crush a lot of rock to get to the gems. Deep learning demands effort. If you want to possess a large mental universe of knowledge from which to draw, you have to consume a lot of information. This requires focused reading.
This part of the essay made me so sad that I can't even be sarcastic about it. It's like Henderson, despite having a PhD, can't imagine any better way to learn big ideas besides downing as many pages as he can stomach. Sometimes a book is useful and sometimes it isn't, but Henderson doesn't explain--or even hint--at why that might be.
Buy Machiavelli's work on Livy's History of Rome, his essay suggests. Start reading all 142 chapters and 400+ pages of it. If it's not especially interesting or insightful, put it down. It might be useful later, or it won't. Don't go look for sources that explain and contextualize Livy and Machiavelli in a way that might make the book more useful to you. Definitely don't listen to a podcast by an expert who can do that. Don't listen to several, and follow up on their sources, and form your own opinion, and read Livy yourself. Definitely don't listen to an audiobook of his works. That's junk food.
The absence of critical thinking in Henderson's process can almost seem accidental if you look at any one passage. He's certain that deep reading leads to deep thinking, and for what it's worth, I agree. But from start to finish, Henderson only discusses how to read more, not more effectively or discerningly or critically, and his final quote suggests that passivity is actually the point of reading:
I’ll close with this excellent line from James Clear, who said to Tim Ferriss (on a podcast I greatly enjoyed):
“Almost every idea that you have is downstream from what you consume. When you choose who to follow on Twitter, what book to read, what podcast to listen to, you’re choosing your future thoughts.”
Henderson's reference to a podcast is clearly meant to be proof of his discernment: it's not really about avoiding podcasts so much as being thoughtful in how you engage with them. Fair enough! One might think that would imply that deep reading is not actually about reading a book vs. listening to one, or about books vs. podcasts, but about the ideas inside them and how you engage with them, but Henderson has just argued the opposite of that, and I think this quote suggests why.
What you "consume" becomes your "future thoughts," the quote says. In the context of Henderson's advice, that becomes a passive and haphazard process. Reading is not a conversation with the author so much as a trickle-down effect. If you stumble upon enough interesting pages, those pages will be your future thoughts. If you buy enough books, you will be well-read. If you put your book in a pile of important books, you will have an important book.
If you're snobbish enough about reading lots of pages--and quote enough tweets and podcasts about it--you will be smart, rather than, say, one of those "obviously bright young adults who don’t read or read nonsense despite paying large sums of money for what should have been a decent education."
“In our busy and distracted society, deep reading is increasingly rare. Deep reading changes people. When you interact with people, you can tell who reads seriously and who doesn’t. This isn’t just a matter of mental ability or intelligence. There is a difference between raw cognitive horsepower and time spent immersed in complex and intricate ideas. You can tell the difference between a smart person who reads and a smart person who doesn’t by how they express ideas, the references they make, and the chains of logic they follow. The former often demonstrates a subtle understanding that weaves together insights from various domains. The latter, though sharp and quick-minded, lacks the same depth of perspective or the ability to see beyond the immediate conversation or the Current Thing. This is becoming increasingly apparent among obviously bright young adults who don’t read or read nonsense despite paying large sums of money for what should have been a decent education.”

bodyguard! terry richmond x black fem! (Singer) reader
summary: you are a rising singer in need of a bodyguard, and that is when Terry gets hired. Your first encounter didn’t go well; he was a stern jerk while you acted like a bit of a diva. Despite your disagreements, you both eventually found a way to work through your differences.
warning: angst, teasing, enemies to friends, brat behavior, insults, fluff, poetry, explicit smut (18+), dom/sub kinda, oral (f), protected rough sex, ass slaps, nicknames (baby, baby girl, beautiful)
note: so sorry for the wait! I changed the summary a bit to make it sound better. I had a lot of fun writing this. I just hope y'all enjoyed it as much as I did, haha.
-
Your singing career grew faster than you expected, taking you on an amazing journey to stardom.
However, your new rise to fame has come with pros and cons like stalking paparazzi and crazy fans.
Your manager recommended hiring a private bodyguard. You were initially hesitant, but eventually, you decided to accept the idea.
When you were introduced to Terry Richmond, you couldn't help but think he was the most handsome man you had ever seen.
However, despite his striking looks, he was a complete asshole with a cold demeanor.
For example, at a meet-and-greet photo op, Terry stood at the entrance as each fan walked through.
He patted them down and gave them a rude remark and an intimidating stare.
“Could you please relax your face a bit? And why are you patting them down like airport security? You need to chill; you're scaring all my fans,” You expressed.
"Brenda, where did you find this clown?" You asked your manager, and she tried to reason with you, but you didn't listen.
Terry glanced at you blankly and said, "I'm just doing my job; it's protocol, ma’am,"
“Fucking protocol, this fucking protocol that is it protocol to be an asshole…and what did I tell you about calling me, ma’am? You know, you’re older than me, right?” You asked, and he didn’t respond.
You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms while patiently waiting for the next fan.
Brenda nudged him on the shoulder and whispered something to him you couldn't hear.
"Look, lady, I'll do my best to appear less intimidating, but I will not tolerate your diva behavior. I'm here to protect you, and protecting your life is serious, which means adhering to protocol. Do you understand?" Terry asked in a softer but still dominant tone.
"I understand, but you need to understand that you are working for me; you can stay on your "protocol shit" but by my rules. Okay," You replied.
“Brenda… I’m sorry, but I can’t work with this,” Terry said, looking at her with frustration, which caused you to look shocked.
"Look at you…running…I thought you were a tough guy, just a clown," You yelled teasing him as he walked out of the room, and Brenda ran after him.
As you talked to your assistant, Chole, Terry, and Brenda walked back into the room. They must have had a talk.
"I apologize for my behavior, miss. I will cooperate with you, but only if you do the same." Terry clenches his jaw, and you smirk, noticing that it probably hurts his ego to say that.
"You know what…It's cool. And fine, I will cooperate," You said, clearing your throat, and oddly feeling slightly aroused.
As the days passed, you noticed subtle changes in Terry's behavior. He started engaging in small talk, asking about your day, and even cracking a joke here and there.
You tried to be less of a bitch and more nice and playful with him. He was still professional but more easy to talk to than before.
Walking together one evening, you paused in front of a quaint little bookstore.
The window display featured a collection of classic novels, their covers slightly worn, as if inviting readers to delve into their pages.
You glanced at Terry, who gave a slight nod of approval, and you both stepped inside.
There weren’t many people inside, thankfully. The smell of old books and polished wood enveloped you, creating a cozy atmosphere.
You wandered through the aisles, your fingers occasionally brushing against the books.
Terry followed at a respectful distance, his eyes still watchful but softer for you.
As you reached the back of the store, you found a comfy armchair tucked away in a corner.
With a contented sigh, you sank into it.
Terry stood nearby, glancing around at the shelves, and you noticed his gaze lingering on a book of poetry.
You pointed it out with a smile. "See something you like, Terry?" You asked curiously in a playful tone.
"Uh," He hesitated momentarily, then picked up the book, flipping through its pages with a surprising gentleness.
"Yeah…I used to read a bit of poetry," He admitted quietly. "It’s been a while."
You nodded, understanding. "Well, maybe today’s the day to start again," You suggested, feeling warm.
“Maybe!”
“Can I ask you what your favorite poem is?” You asked, genuinely curious.
Terry paused, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "There's one by Langston Hughes that I always liked," He said, voice softening.
“What is it?”
“Uh…The Dream Keeper.' It's about dreams, how precious they are, and how they must be protected and cherished."
You smiled, touched by his choice. "That's a beautiful one. Wow, I wouldn't have thought you would be a guy into poetry."
"Well… that's your problem. You don't know nothing by me," Terry said, a rare, full smile breaking through his usually composed exterior, which fluttered your heart.
"You right…maybe…I should get to know you more on a deeper level." You flirted playfully, looking into his pretty eyes intensely
"How about you? What's your favorite poem?" Terry asked, ultimately shifting the subject.
He was good at that; change the topic whenever you asked about getting to know him.
Terry comes over with the book in his hand and sits next to you. You think for a moment.
"I think I'd have to say 'Phenomenal Woman' by Maya Angelou," You replied as your eyes lit up.
"It's such an empowering piece, full of strength and grace," you continued.
Terry nodded thoughtfully, his fingers gently gliding over the pages of the poetry book.
"Angelou's words have a way of striking right at the heart," He agreed, genuinely interested in the discussion.
“You are a Phenomenal Woman,” He mumbled in a low tone, hoping you didn’t hear him, but you did.
You smirked. “You think so?
“Damn it! nothing gets past you, huh?” He chuckles softly; his little chuckle is music to your ears.
“Do you mean it?” You asked, looking at him, fluttering your eyelashes, waiting for him to respond.
His expression changed from gentle to serious, and Terry stood, stretching a little.
“Let me know when you’ve finished,” He said, glancing over his shoulder as he prepared to walk away, a hint of cold in his voice.
"Wait," You said, stopping him, and grabbing the poetry book from his hand before heading to the front cash register.
“What are you doing?” He asked, his brow furrowed in confusion as he trotted closely behind you.
“I’m getting this for you,” You replied, smiling, handing the book to the cashier.
"As a thank you for cooperating with my attitude. I know it's your job to protect me, and you want to do your job right, but who says we can’t be friends, right?" You added with a smile.
"You didn't have to do that," He said, looking surprised, but a hint of gratitude shone in his light eyes.
"Well, I wanted to," You said simply. Both of you waited for the car inside, and soon, Terry guided you out of the bookstore, shielding you from the paparazzi.
You shivered slightly when you felt his hand on your lower back. The two of you managed to get into the car.
The car ride was quiet, filled with the soft hum of the music and the occasional rustle of paper as Terry thumbed through his new book.
You watched him from the corner of your eye, noticing how his expression softened as he read.
Seeing this side of him was amazing, a reminder that maybe you could get him to open up a little bit.
"Thank you," Terry said suddenly, breaking the silence. "For the book."
You smiled, touched by his sincerity. "Of course, Terry."
He simply nodded in acknowledgment, then turned his attention back to the pages of his book.
As he immersed himself in the book, you couldn't help but admire his caramel-brown skin tone emanated a warm glow under the sun shining from the window, highlighting his essence.
You watched his mesmerizing blend of greyish-blue or perhaps hazel-green eyes, depending on the day, move back and forth through the words.
“You know, it’s not nice to stare,” Terry remarked playfully, glancing up from his book.
His eyes sparkled with mischief as he offered you a warm, infectious smile—the kind that lingered in your thoughts long after you had seen it.
You looked away, trying to suppress a smile; this man was going to be the death of you if you didn't do something about it.
As months passed, Terry finally began to share his life before becoming a bodyguard. The more you learn about him, the deeper your feelings for him become.
You now consider him a friend. In public, Terry maintained a professional bodyguard demeanor.
In private, he was like a big teddy bear you couldn’t help but want to embrace.
Although spending almost every day together, there was still a boundary he wouldn’t cross with you, and you wanted him to cross it so bad.
Your first global tour was a complete success. You traveled worldwide, singing and meeting your fans; it was a dream come true.
It was around eight at night, and you found yourself alone in your hotel room, wearing pajamas and waiting for room service.
Out of nowhere, a firm knock echoes through the quiet room. You pause, glancing toward the door, and call out to see who it is.
A familiar voice responds—it’s Terry. You invited him in, and he entered with the room service server.
His reassuring presence stood tall as he watched the server set everything on the table before dismissing them.
"Are you hungry?" You asked, your voice slightly hoarse from the last evening's performance.
Terry caught your gaze, his eyes sparkling with that familiar glimmer.
"No, I’m fine. I just wanted to make sure you got your food," He replied, his tone sweet and sincere.
"Come on, are you sure? There’s plenty to share, Terry," You said, motioning toward the spread of food.
"I guess, maybe just a little," He agreed, pulling up a chair beside you.
You both began to eat in a lovely, comfortable silence, but Terry broke it by asking you something.
"I never really asked you this but how are you managing and feeling all of this?" Terry asked, gesturing to this rising fame.
You shrugged, a small smile gracing your lips. "It's been exciting, anxious. I have my moments, you know that,"
"Oh, I know…you still do, bratty attitude and everything," he said teasingly, but stating facts, you playfully hit him on the arm.
"But I'm trying to meditate and stay grounded, surrounding myself with trustworthy people like you and Brenda."
He nodded, a warm grin spreading across his face. "I'm glad to hear that."
"You're doing an incredible job. It's not easy being in the spotlight all the time." He added, his simple yet heartfelt words warmed your heart.
"Thank you, Terry. That truly means a lot," You replied softly, and he gave you a nod with a smile.
After eating, you and Terry began watching a movie in bed, and you unexpectedly fell asleep.
Your head fell on his shoulder, and you began cuddling against him.
Terry removed you from his arm, got out of the bed, and reluctantly prepared to leave, but you stopped him.
"Where are you goin', T?" You whined sleepily, holding his arm tenderly.
"I should let you get some rest," He said, a touch of remorse in his voice.
“No….wait..,” You said, letting go of his arm and clumsily getting out of bed.
You almost stumbled, but he caught you. You and Terry shared an intense gaze before your eyes shifted to his lips.
You leaned in, lust swirling in the air between you. Just as your lips were about to meet.
Terry stopped you and gently placed a hand on your shoulder, his expression serious.
“We can’t,” Terry said, the weight of his words hanging heavily around you.
“Terry, it’s okay. Let it happen,” you said, leaning in closer again, feeling him shift, especially when he didn't push you away.
You kiss his lips softly, and he melts into the kiss, loving the warmth and sweetness of your lips.
Just as you were to rest your hands on his shoulders, a sudden shift occurs, and he gently pulls away, your eyes lingering on his back.
“Fuck, you're making this real hard for me,” He says, moving towards the couch on the other side of the room.
“Terry, don’t you feel this attraction between us? Because I do…I really like you.”
“I-i do but…it’s….”
You moved toward him, knelt before him, and placed your hands on his knees.
“Wrong,” You quietly inquired, your voice barely above a whisper, while pressing your forehead gently against his.
The warmth of your skin is connected with his, creating intimate and intense feelings.
“Because it’s unprofessional, and you work for me. Well, who fucking cares? We're attractive to each other, and we want each other. Let's just say fuck it," You expressed, grabbing his hand and placing it on your exposed wide hip.
You heard his breath hitch as Terry shook his head, trying to resist as he uttered your name, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Come on…Daddy," You whispered softly, heart racing as you just risked calling him that.
Terry tilted his head and grunted his teeth before grabbing your face with his hands and pulling you into a passionate kiss before lifting you up to straddle him.
The world around you seemed to fade away as you lost yourself in the feel of his hands on your body and the feel of his sweet, soft lips.
A muffled moan leaves your mouth as Terry's tongue begins to dance along with yours.
He pulls away and starts kissing your jawline and your neck before opening your button-up PJ shirt roughly and your breasts popping out.
"You've been driving me crazy, you know?" He asked, squeezing them and sucking them, causing you to let out a moan.
You gazed at him with intense desire; his dirty talk and the hunger in his eyes deepened your arousal by the minute.
Terry had you stand up with him, and you both began removing each other's clothes.
His breath hitched, feeling you unbutton his pants and push them down to his feet.
"Mmmmm, I thought it was bigger, Daddy. This is disappointing, " You said playfully, aware that you were treading on dangerous ground.
You bite your lip while gently caressing his big, throbbing dick through his underwear.
He grabbed your neck roughly and said, "Oh, is it? You better watch, girl. I'll have you begging and crying for it; I'mma have to teach you a lesson. keep playing with me."
And indeed he did.
Terry smiled up between your legs. You were a hot, crying, and moaning mess who should've shut your damn mouth.
This was your third orgasm; he was working out of you, and you were so damn sensitive.
"Look at you, a fucking mess. Shouldn't have been talking all that shit." He says, plunging his tongue between your wet folds again, seeking out your most sensitive spots.
"Daddy, ahhh, I'm sorry, oh fuck right here," You cried, feeling him spread your legs further apart, slowly sliding in one, then two fingers, pumping in and out fast.
Pressure began building deep inside. "Right there, baby girl?" He asked.
"Yes, ahhh yes!" You moaned, feeling your walls start fluttering around his fingers.
A third finger slips in, and in one thrust, your body tenses; in two thrusts, your eyes roll in the back of your head.
"Mmm fuck….I'm close, daddy," You moaned softly, gripping the bed sheets tightly while bucking your hip a little bit.
"Cum for me, baby girl." He says, lapping his tongue through your folds, and the orgasm hits you like a bus.
"That's it, such a good girl. Look at you," Terry says, placing your legs down and kissing your inner thigh.
You look at him hungrily while coming down from your high. You watched him get a condom and stroke his dick.
"How do you want me, Daddy?" "You asked, propping yourself up on your elbows.
Terry looked at you, still stroking himself; the way he was doing it was turning you on even more.
"I want you to ride me, but reverse," He said, going to lie on his back, and you climbed on top, reversing yourself to face away from him.
He held your waist with one hand while his legs were slightly spread apart.
You grip his dick gently and slowly slide down, causing you to let out a hiss, just the tip only was just too much for you.
"What's the matter, baby girl? Too big for you?" He asked, playfully teasing you.
"No, I can handle it; I've had much bigger than this," You said, with fake confidence, which earned you an ass slap.
"Watch it, baby girl," Terry said with a growl, and you moaned, continuing to slowly slide down his big dick until he was entirely in you and stretching you out.
"Okay, good girl, you got through that; go ahead fuck yourself on it, do all the work if you can," He said, propped up with his arms behind his head, and a mischief smirk played on his lips.
Why couldn't you just keep your mouth shut? You told yourself you could've had what you wanted, but Terry was punishing you for your teasing.
You bite your lip and place your hands between his legs, bouncing up and down slowly.
"Mmmm, fuck, there you go, beautiful girl," Terry groaned, giving your ass another slap; even when he's trying to teach you a lesson, he's praising you.
You adapted to his size quicker than expected, bouncing faster, but this didn't reach your wants.
You tried to keep going, but you needed him; you needed his dick, and you needed him to fuck you and take control.
"Daddy?" You cried, shifted to look back at him, and he smiled with his brow raised.
"Yes, baby girl? Is something wrong?" He asked with a bit of amusement in his tone.
"Fuck me, please. I'm sorry. I need you, I need your dick, please," You begged desperately.
"tsk, tsk, tsk. I don't know…have you learned your lesson?" Terry asked, waiting for an answer.
"Yes, I swear, yes." You nodded desperately, and tears began streaming down your face.
"Nah…I don't think you have, but Imma turn this pussy out and show you when not to play with me," Terry said dominantly, grabbing your waist and thrusting up harshly, causing you to let out a moan.
"Ahh, fuck" You moaned, placing your hands on his chest, watching his length move in and out of you.
This was what you wanted to feel him move in and out out of your pussy, skin on skin, slapping, filling the room.
Your breasts bounced every which way while you cried and moaned in great pleasure for more.
"You like that, don't you? You like me being in control and fucking the brat of you huh?" Terry asked as his hands moved to your hips, grip tighter than before.
"Yes, Daddy, ahh, just like that, ahh fuck me." You moaned, grew in volume, on the verge of being screams of ecstasy.
The pleasure that he was giving you felt so good that the knot in your stomach was exponentially reforming with every thrust.
Terry could tell from how your pussy clenched around his dick. You whimper when he pulls out, but you get excited when he says.
"Turn around. I want to see that pretty little face of yours, baby."
You turn your body, slightly shaking, and quickly, Terry grabs you to flip you on your back.
You bit your lip, watching him slide in, and start thrusting slowly but quickly, picking up the pace.
"Fuck, yes, Terry," You moaned, wrapping yourself around him, clinging to his skin and leaving scratches down his back.
He grabbed your hand and pushed it above your head, pressing his entire body weight against you.
"Fuck, you feel so good, and you look so damn beautiful; look at you, ahh fuck" Terry moans, kissing you first before pulling away to grip your waist tighter and watch your breasts bounce up and down.
You gripped his arms, letting out louder moans as he went faster, harder, and deeper than before.
"Tell me this is the best dick you've have ever had," He growled
"Ahh…this-this is the best dick I've ever had, Daddy," You cried out, making him smirk.
"You love this dick, don't you?" Terry asked, pulling out and slamming back into you hard, hitting your sweet spot.
"Yes. daddy. I love it; I love it so much. Fuck, It feels so so good I'm gonna-! " You screamed, arching your back.
"Fuck, that's it. You're so fucking good, baby. Such a good girl, cum for me," He moans, kissing your lips, and without a doubt, you orgasmed fourth time tonight.
This one was gushing out of you, causing Terry to pull out and hit his dick against your sensitive pussy before continuing to thrust back in until he had reached his own mind-blowing orgasm.
Terry pulled you into a kiss and moaned your name. You loved hearing every sound he made; he thrusted once more and spilled into the condom, falling against you.
Both of you remained there, trying to catch your breath. You stroked his back as he kissed your neck and collarbone.
Terry rolls off of you, throws the condom away, and pulls you close to cuddle.
You caressed his cheek and gazed into his eyes; words were unnecessary. There was much to figure out, but that could wait because this moment was worth it.

coward, juyeon
classmate! the boyz juyeon x fem! reader fluff wc: 4.5k hallelujah warnings: none that i know of a/n: fake dating aye aye ayeee .... but its nearly not even discussed ;; finally and definitely words are overused
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Girlfriend. I said girlfriend. Everybody, my girlfriend." Juyeon pulls you beside him as he strikes you with his menacingly fake eye smile, trying to get you into the problem he was currently making.
Your eye twitches in confusion, but your head nods anyway as you twist it slowly to look at his mother and friends in front of him, beaming at Juyeon. His mom quickly takes your hand to shake, eyes brightly smiling at you just like how Juyeon's did.
"It's good to finally meet his boyfriend he's been nonstop talking. It came to a point I thought he was only making up a girlfriend in his head," His mom chuckles and Juyeon grunts beside you as he gently takes your hand back to hold.
"Is he being real now?" Eric questions Chanhee, and honestly, no one knows whether he was being real. So you ask him back.
"Yeah, Juyeon, are you being for real now?" You chuckle, questioning him daringly.
"Yeah, real. Absolutely real." He smiles, nose scrunching at you.
Graduation ceremony just ended and photo ops were everywhere, when Juyeon suddenly asks for a picture with you. When leaving, suddenly, his mom was in front of you along with his friends, introducing you as his girlfriend.
"What the hell was that, Juyeon?" You ask, finally getting some alone time by leaving the hall for a moment. "I'm suddenly your girlfriend?"
"Sorry about that," Juyeon chuckles, scratching his head. "My mom kept bugging me for a girlfriend for a few months already, so I thought I'd... pull you just then," He tried reasoning- still unreasonable.
"Are you kidding me, Juyeon? Me? Of all people?" You act as if crying, head pounding with all of his bullshit. "We're not even the closest friends! We've only talked like- how many times, Juyeon?"
"I'm sorry, y/n... But please bear with this for a while, just over the break! And I promise we'll end like nothing even happened,"
After a few minutes of silence, you stared at Juyeon warily before heaving a sigh, finally giving in.
"Just over the break, Juyeon."
Tumblr media
"Mom's inviting you over her birthday..." Juyeon starts over the call, and you could hear him walking around as he stated the purpose of the call. "...And properly meet... literally my whole family."
"What the hell?" You helplessly mock cry, rubbing your temples to come up with a plan. "Juyeon, wasn't it enough that you introduced me as a girlfriend? You invite me to family events now?" You ask. "Look, I know all I've been doing the whole week was lie down and catch up with The Umbrella Academy but any of what you're saying is out of my plans!"
"Well, you're my girlfriend after all, so of course she's going to invite you." You don't know if Juyeon's too innocent and pure to even be doing this. All you know was that he really has no ill intentions over the matter. While you're helpless, someone's more helpless than you. Juyeon is. "I can just say you're not over the weekend, y/n."
"It'll be too rude to decline!" You stop him, "...I'll go."
And there you were, standing in front of their porch by a random Saturday afternoon, box of cake in one hand and flowers in the other. You had to elbow the doorbell, shaking at the apparently, first meet the whole family.
"Oh!" Juyeon's bright smile welcomes you once the door opens, setting the glass of wine she's been holding aside to get the things you've been holding. "Is this all for me?"
"Yes, ma'am," You chuckle, accepting a side hug from her. "Happy birthday, ma'am. I hope I'm not bothering your day,"
"You keep saying ma'am- we're family now! You should call me mom too! And don't worry about barging in, I invited you! Let me get Juyeon," She welcomes you in, leading you to the living room but even before she steps away, she turns around to look at you again. "Right! I almost forgot." She smiles, "Thank you for these." She raises both of her hands that now hold what you held, and you smile at her.
"Of course." You stay wandering around the living room, looking at the endless picture frames and you see Juyeon's growth throughout the years.
Although being classmates with him since first year high school, you realize you never really got to interact with him as much. As classmates, yes, but nothing outside of school grounds.
Looking at each picture since being a baby, and then from starting kindergarten, to the recent graduation, a giggle can't help leaving your lips when you realize that Juyeon's eye smile never changed.
"What are you laughing at?" You jump at Juyeon's voice beside your ear, looking at the frame you were last looking. When you whip your head to the side, his face was inches away. You step back due to shock, almost tumbling their vase down. "Sorry, did I scare you?" He giggles, putting his hands in his pants pockets. "You didn't call me so I wasn't able to get the door for you."
After gaining composure, you smile at him.
"I was holding a flower and a cake. You think I can call you in that case?" You pick on him, jokingly glaring. "I can't come empty handed when it's my boyfriend's mom's birthday."
"And for your boyfriend?" He lets out his hands in front of you, ready to receive something. You scoff, smirking. "Well, you came here for me too, didn't you?"
"Oh, I have one." You shake your head, smiling at him. You take his hand to pull closer to you and lower, stealing a quick kiss on his cheek.
Just at the right timing, his mom enters and invites you to the dining table, and you leave Juyeon with a pat in the shoulder and a sneaky smile.
You miss how Juyeon stays in his place for a whole minute, processing what just happened as his ears go red. His cheekbones slowly make its way up, eyes blinking in an abnormal pace as if it made up for the skip of beat of his heart.
"Juyeon, it's time to introduce your girlfriend," Juyeon's mom knocks on the wall to get his attention, and he immediately gets back flat on his feet and hopping to the dining.
He grabs your hand swiftly as you stand before his family, intertwining it and giving you a glance before introducing you.
"Everybody, y/n. My girlfriend. Y/n, my family. Sister, Younger brother, Mom, and Dad." They all smile at you as you give your respects to them, and then melting at Juyeon's warmth as you hide behind his shoulder due to shyness at everyone's eyes on you.
You were definitely, definitely welcomed.
And from that point on, you didn't even feel like you were just a fake girlfriend.
Not until right after eating, no. When suddenly, his younger brother asks you when you started dating.
"My brother always tells me everything! So I was upset when he revealed that he had a girlfriend but didn't tell me before..." He pouts and Juyeon chuckles, mumbling another apology to the poor guy.
Saliva caught up in your throat though, chugging down the whole glass of water trying to think of a good answer. You tried pinching Juyeon's thigh under the table but he only shoos it off, meaning you were on it by yourself only.
"Ah, haha." You tried lighting up the atmosphere. Everybody was waiting for your answer, and you try to come up with the safest one.
"Actually, we just started dating since graduation." You smile, and everybody sits still in silence. "Before the ceremony, I finally agreed after Juyeon pursued me for months," You exaggerate, finally earning chuckles from the family. You silently let out a sigh of relief and continue the conversation. "I'm sorry your brother didn't tell you,"
Because he didn't tell me either.
You glare at Juyeon for a second, smiling in a second once you whipped your head in front.
"What do you like most about my brother? Because I don't see anything someone like you would like from my brother. Definitely out of his league." His sister jokes around, earning a whine from Juyeon and a subtle kick under the table.
And you ponder. It takes you a few minutes because really, this wasn't one of the questions you imagined being asked today, right in front of his family.
"See! She can't even answer!"
You take a glance at Juyeon, and then chuckle.
"I think it's just hard to put into words," You explain, holding Juyeon's hands. Without trying to die out of cringe, you exhale deeply. "I think it was Juyeon's smile that I love most." You smile, turning to his family while letting your hand stay on his. "It never changes. From first year, to now, it's safe to say that Juyeon's smile never changed. And it felt... relieving? Of some kind- to realize that although everything was changing, he wasn't."
Everybody was silent. Their eyes were on you, especially Juyeon. He wasn't expecting any serious answer for he only dragged you into this mess but... now, he's far from regretting the choices he's been making.
"It felt comforting. His presence as a whole too, that I could come and go run to someone that was far from changing. And I could only hope to be the same for him." You tighten your hold on Juyeon's hand, and he was already smiling up to his ears.
The scene made everyone's heart flutter, and although Juyeon's sister almost vomited, she hated to admit it was pleasing to the eye that finally, someone had Juyeon's back.
Meanwhile Juyeon, was dying of cuteness. He wanted to squish you in a tight hug-- although you were definitely just a fake girlfriend, and he has no idea whether you were making that up- it doesn't matter.
He has fallen way too deep.
To be honest, everything he reasoned out to be in this situation was true. Except the fact that he had to run around the large hall room just to look for you and was even ready to beg you to help him out. Turns out, you found him. You. It was you who found him. And coincidentally, was already in front of his mom and his friends.
When you saw him, you weren't really planning on it, were you? But since he was already in front of you, you asked for a picture.
And fast forward- which got you into this mess. Would you even call it a mess?
"Well that was one fine lunch." You whisper, already habitually holding his hand as you made your way to the living room alone with him.
"I enjoyed it." Juyeon chuckles, which makes you whip your head toward him. When you took a seat, you furrowed your eyebrows. Juyeon was continuously smiling at you, which makes you burst out laughing.
"Juyeon, you're overusing your special killer move. Stop smiling, you'll grow on me." You point at him and he... wriggles in place, falling right beside you on the couch.
"I'm sorry you had to go all through that," He starts, grabbing your hand to study. He memorizes how your warmth feels, where your calluses break the softness and smoothness of your skin, and how your fingers are just like the right piece of puzzle to his large fingers to intertwine with.
"Don't worry about it. At the end of it all I had fun," You smile, and you scoot to the side to take a better look at him, looking at your hand.
And you wonder, how come you've never laid your eyes on him?
"Right, my sister is getting married next month, they'd expect me to bring you as my plus one," Juyeon turns to look at you after intertwining your hands, and once again, your faces were only inches apart. "T-that's... if you're, uh, free, of course."
"I'm agreeing only because I liked your family." You chuckle, poking his nose lightly.
"And me?" It almost comes out as a whisper, and you softly smile.
"And you."
Tumblr media
"I'm five minutes away," You giggle over the phone, "Sorry, I was stuck in traffic."
"Take your time, I'm waiting patiently," Juyeon chuckles when he senses your panic in your voice, trying to calm you down. He waits by the entrance doors, bidding goodbye once he sees you hopping to the mall.
"Hey, sorry." Juyeon ends the call and buries his phone in his pocket, smiling at you. He gives you a side hug and assures you once again, giving you the small bouquet of tulips he bought prior. "Ooooh Juyeon, what's this for?"
"For our first date." He twirls in place due to embarrassment, while you give him the most cheeky smile you could give.
"Aw! Thank you Juyeon! So much for being a fake girlfriend," You chuckle, and you don't mean to be a party pooper, really.
It was just to... remind the both of you.
You inhale sharply to change the sudden drop of mood, smiling.
"Now, help me find a good outfit for the wedding."
You've been roaming around trying to find the best outfit that fit the garden theme of the wedding, not seeming to find the 'right' one for you.
"You must be tired. We should eat first," You frown apologetically, pulling him beside you to sit.
"I'm okay though," Juyeon worriedly looks at you who seems frustrated, taking your hand to caress.
"I just can't see any dress to my liking," You pout, stomping your feet childishly.
"Should we go drive to another mall?"
"No, it's fine. I've bothered you enough. We can go check one last store and then I'd have to settle with what I can," You explain, pressing your lips to a thin line. "But before that, we should eat."
"What do you want to order?" You ask, turning to him when he's still so busy looking up the menu. You chuckle, initiating to order yours first when you realize the cashier was gawking at Juyeon already. "Sorry, excuse me?" When she still hasn't responded, you groan in annoyance. "Juyeon, baby, you still haven't decided?" You chuckle, pulling him closer.
Juyeon buffers in real life when he hears you say baby, blinking rapidly.
"Huh?" But a smile was forming in his lips. "Baby, sorry. Baby, I'll take the F2 set, baby." See, when Juyeon wants to tease you with your slip of mouth, he tends to overuse it toward you. You roll your eyes, but mirror his smile anyway.
"You were saying what, baby?" Juyeon asks as you take a seat, laughing his heart out.
"My god, I hate you so much," You groan, looking away.
"Oh but do you, really? You hate your baby so much?" He coos, and you push his face away. After letting out a hearty laugh, "Let's go to your last store and pick a dress. The sun's going down. If you want, we can go drive by another mall by tomorrow before the wedding the day after tomorrow."
"It's okay. You should go rest for tomorrow too. I'll pick a dress there in the store," You smile, urging him to go and eat first. "Thank you for going with me, Juyeon. You must be really tired,"
"I told you, I'm okay." He shakes his hand in front of you, and for a second, you suppress the urge to hold his hand. "I enjoyed today and had fun with you."
As you made your way to the last store, he sees your eyes shine at the variety of options presented to you. But one dress appealed the most to you, immediately picking it.
"This is it, Juyeon," You whisper, hands roaming around the peach ankle-length floral sundress that perfectly fit your body. "This is it, Juyeon!" You jump out of the dressing room, showing him the dress and twirling in place in happiness.
Juyeon admires. It was the first time you had shown him any of the dresses you have tried on, and "God, you're beautiful." was the only thing that could come out of his mouth.
God, you were really, very, so beautiful.
You chuckle shyly, looking around when Juyeon only looks at you with such heart eyes.
"I'll go change back now, I'll take this," You blabber, skipping back to the dressing room. After one last look at yourself, you smile satisfyingly.
Juyeon is only brought back to reality when you're out of sight, and only realizes he was holding back his breath when he releases a long sigh.
Oh he just can't wait to see you again in that dress.
And his reaction doesn't really change when he sees you walking down the stairs of your porch, all ready to go with a sweet smile on your face.
"Beautiful." He says when he takes your hand to assist you, holding the passenger seat's door open.
"Not so bad yourself, baby." You scrunch your nose, taking a seat and eyes following Juyeon outside until he finally settled beside you.
"Ready?" He asks, and when he sees you smile, he finally starts the car.
And actually, time flies by fast when you're with Juyeon. The car ride was fast and fun, and it didn't occur to you until now that you and Juyeon clicked so much.
"I'll go get us some drinks. You must be thirsty after all that greetings from my family." You nod, smiling at him after sitting.
"Please be fast," You whisper, your introverted ass not not surviving for a minute alone in a social place. Juyeon chuckles as he pats your head, jogging to the back kitchen to grab you some drinks.
"Hey," When you thought Juyeon was back, you quickly turn to smile but is only greeted by his cousin, Jungwoo.
"Oh, hi! Jungwoo, right?" You welcome, growing uncomfortable at the stranger, but not wanting to be rude.
"Aye, you remembered!" Jungwoo lightens the mood, and had no other ill intentions but to keep you company. He sits besde you and starts a small talk, in which eventually you grew comfortable of his presence.
He was a funny guy, and made you laugh a lot. Now even that he stays still, the way he moves, he makes you laugh.
"Unfortunately, your clown has to go now. I have to take care of things on the groom's side, you know, for their last salut for tonight,"
"Oh yeah, do so! I'm so sorry I took much of your time. I wonder where Juyeon went," You smile apologetically, shaking your hands in front of him to urge him to go ahead.
"There your prince charming goes," He pouts to a direction, making you whip your head to the side. The familiar face finally makes you heave a sigh of relief, smiling at him.
He lets out a fake smile for a second, as he makes his way to you.
"Had fun?" Juyeon asks hastily, after nodding at Jungwoo and sitting where Jungwoo had sat.
"Yeah, your cousin's fun! Definitely should try stand up comedy," You chuckle, ignorant of Juyeon's change of mood.
"Good." That's where it hit you, when Juyeon didn't have his signature smile plastered on his face, simply chugging the glass of champagne twirling between his fingers.
"Did something happen? Why the long face?" You question, taking his hand to caress.
"Nothing," He sighs, swiftly turning your hand for him to hold. He shoots you a smile, scooting closer. Maybe he's just had a bad moment back there, so you didn't press on it further. "The salut's next, then we can go back to the accommodation if you're tired,"
"No it's fine! I'm enjoying, and you're back anyway," You smile, and pay attention once the clank of the knife on the wine glass was heard.
"...Cheers!" Juyeon's sister raises her glass as everybody does, drinking the champagne right after.
"We're inviting all of the couple in the middle of the stage for the slow dance, in line with the newly wedded's requests! This has been..." The host had finally concluded the reception, the lights dimming and focusing on the stage, the music turning into a romantic, slow song.
A lot has been making their way in the middle, and your smile never leaves your face in adoration of the beautiful scene in front of you.
"Hey lovebirds, you should go dance too," Juyeon's parents suddenly appears behind the both of you, pushing you to stand and pulling you in the middle in contrast of Juyeon's whines.
Of course, he wasn't able to refute his parents' glares and formally takes your hand, asking for a dance.
"It's okay, I don't really know how to dance so,"
"That's okay, you have me." Juyeon smiles, and somewhat, that convinced you. So you take his hand and made your way in the middle, greeting the newly weds. You saw how Juyeon's sister raised her eyebrows at his brother teasingly, which earned her a chuckle.
Juyeon shyly teaches and guides you where to put your hands, and you feel how his palms were sweaty.
"I think you're more nervous than me, judging how your palms are sweaty and how fast your chest's going up and down in a second," You chuckle, laying your hand on his left chest. You feel how fast his heart is beating, and for a second right there, you were worried. "Did you drink too much? How come your heart's beating this fast, Juyeon?"
He nervously chuckles, but doesn't give you an answer. He continues to teach you how to waltz, and you comply... terribly.
"That's okay, you can just go and step on me all you want," Juyeon's laugh rings around your ears pleasantly, and as selfish as you can be, you want to be the only reason why he laughs like that.
The past month had been weird, but oddly heart fluttering because of Juyeon. Weird from the start that he had to ask you to be his fake girlfriend, and him as someone you had limited interactions only. But aside all that, you had been enjoying getting to know him and his family.
How his slow ass will never survive your fast pace, how he plays basketball any free second he's given, how he always have to drink milk at 8 am sharp, how he cannot, for the life of his, watch any scary video, much more a horror movie, without company, or how he gets upset easily.
"You were laughing a lot with Jungwoo earlier. What did you two talk about?" You chuckle at Juyeon's attempt to have a small talk, to hopefully avert your attention away from his stammering and cold sweating due to the close proximity.
"I figured you're jealous." You shrug, following his sense of rhythm and miraculously not stepping on him. "You don't have to, baby. We were talking about your diaper days. And he had lots of stories to tell about you so..."
"Who's jealous? Your baby? I don't think I need to be," When he finally hears you call him your endearment once again, his shoulders go way to high again, which makes you laugh.
You pull him in to a comfortable hug, swaying to the sound of the slow melody. You feel Juyeon stiffen, so you melt more into his warmth.
"You know, Juyeon, I'm at a point where I want to thank you for dragging me into this mess," Maybe you initiated a hug because you didn't want to face him as you say what has been bugging your mind all night. "For introducing me as your fake girlfriend. You've been nothing but good to me, as well as your family. To think that this will all come to an end so soon breaks my heart." You pout, and you thank the lords you're not seeing how Juyeon is reacting right now.
Because if you do, you might really just cry right then and there. Juyeon was too good to be true for you, and for a fact that you were the one who wanted all of this to end as soon as possible from the start was horrendous to think about. You should even be thanking him for giving you the opportunity to be treated by the Lee Juyeon.
"y/n-,"
"What I'm saying is, Juyeon... I like you. Over the past month, I've grown to like you not just a fake boyfriend. I hope I'm making sense here," You sigh, genuinely afraid of the chance of rejection. "I know I said we should end it by today but... If you still agree with that, I understand, you can leave me here and I won't hold any grudge."
You close your eyes, eventually feeling Juyeon's tensed body ease up, breaking the hug. Your chest tightens, feeling disappointed as your head drops down in embarrassment. You wait for a few seconds before opening your eyes, ready to walk away but there Juyeon was, in front of you, adoring your hunched self.
Just a second ago, he was the one all tensed up and all ready to call off the agreement in respect of your pleas of getting out of the messy situation. But now, he was the one all smug and confident, thanking you internally because you were the one who confessed.
Because really, would he even think about confessing after the dumb move he made in that graduation hall?
"You're so cute," Juyeon takes ahold of both of your arms again and guide its way atop his shoulders, softly linking his forehead onto yours sweetly. "y/n, you like a coward who's been hiding his feelings for 5 years straight. You like a coward who didn't think twice about his actions, a coward who, instead of confessing, drags the girl he likes all these years in front of his family and friends, introducing her as his girlfriend. You like a coward who was even thinking of letting you go just a minute ago, y/n. Because if you didn't even bat an eye on me all those years we've been classmates... what more can I bring to the table now, right?"
Juyeon's mind was all over the place. Just like how you were thinking awhile ago, he thinks you're indeed to good to be true for him. That you don't deserve someone as simple as him, someone as cowardly as him.
"Juyeon, look at me." You cup his cheek, smiling assuredly at him. "You're more than enough for me. I like you as you are, and I will love you as you offer. You're my coward, Juyeon. And I will take what you can give. We'll be each other's answers in each of our lapses. We don't have to be perfect. I just want you, Juyeon."
And as deep as the night, Juyeon finally lets go of his doubts, taking the hand you cupped his cheek with to kiss, and following your forehead thereafter.
It was safe to say that Juyeon was being real now. However this time, you were too. You both were.

tiny exception [pt. 2] - stellaron hunter crew
Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary; there's one little exception to the rules of the stellaron hunters...
genre/extra tags; one shot, fluff, a lot of fluff, comedy, children are menaces but it's okay, blade will be punting a kid (/j), rich aunt kafka, silver wolf doesn't know how to handle kids
[platonic] [5-7 year old reader] [gender neutral reader]
[buy me a kofi to support!]
word count; 615
a/n; finally i have finished the part two of this iconic work bc someone requested it. hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
[rule 1; don't bother blade]
this rule really should be obvious. it really should, but kids don't listen to obvious rules.
"why are you so grumpy?"
"because of you."
"that's mean. you're really mean." you sit right on his lap because you felt stubborn today. "and you're stupid." silver wolf stifles a laugh at the sight before her. you and blade glare at each other as you poke at his face like a cat. "and ugly."
"i think you're talking about yourself." anyone who didn't know blade would think, man, he doesn't like this kid. but from the way he holds you gently and the tiny glint of playfulness in his eyes as he talks to you.
"you're so rude! i'm gonna tell kafka!"
you push yourself against him in a weak attempt to tackle him. he only carries you, hands under your armpits as you struggle in his hold.
"you're a little snitch, you know that?" he holds you like a baby this time as you're still kicking your legs and trying to squirm out of his grip to get a chance to get to kafka.
"because you're a big meanie! a big butthead!"
"yeah, yeah."
Tumblr media
[rule 2; don't go in kafka's room]
there wasn't really anything incriminating in there. she just didn't like people invading her space and it was normal. but there's always those little exceptions.
"auntie!" you knock on her door, almost a little too loudly. she does open the door, not really fazed since she knows your loud knocks from anywhere.
"what is it, dear?" she's tiredly picking you up, it's clear that she's had a long day but by aeons, she wasn't gonna let that stop her from caring for you.
"can i sleep with you tonight.." you're a little bit embarrassed. you usually stay with silver wolf as her late night working sessions usually help you fall asleep but you haven't seen kafka in the past few days.
"of course you can. i would never say no." her hand pats against your back, comforting you and starting to lull you into a sleep. she lets you rest your head on her shoulder, humming, "i'll be doing a little bit before we lay down. just sleep, baby."
"i like your room, auntie.. i like being with you." you mumbled tiredly. you rest against her as she sits down at her desk, still holding you.
"i like being with you too."
Tumblr media
[rule 3; let silverwolf focus when she's playing her games]
something about children and always wondering what games you got on your phone always has silverwolf reeling away from you when she goes to play her games. it took her longest to get used to your bright presence. honestly, children were not really any of their forte. you were an unexpected (yet expected) part of the crew even if you didn't do much (yet).
she usually kept herself away but today was different. she offered to play with you. as it was almost out of character of her, you immediately accepted. and you played a two player co-op game. she was more focused than you were but you didn't mind.
you weren't doing well in the game as your character died multiple times during this boss battle (that was set to medium for you but co-op gave it more health and different battle patterns). you watched as silverwolf tried her best to pull through.
"you can do it!" you had said in the heat of the moment, but her finger slipped and you both lost. "i'm sorry!"
she's a little bit frustrated being so close to the end but she lets out a tired sigh. "it's okay."

One-Time Collaboration..? • Idol!Reader x Robin
A/N: somewhat modern au??? I mean robin just works under a company and thats it also unfortunately no Sunday mention i'm sorry gang but I swear I am a loyal wife with my 160+ pulls for these two- warnings: a closed off and slightly oblivious reader that adapted to their environment , random fluff from an op who just dropped angst yesterday , somewhat?? affectionate robin in your area , and a RUSHED ASS WORK-
Tumblr media
• So your manager called in the middle of your practice session and explained that you’ll be having a collaboration with Pena.Co’s precious angel: Robin. She actually debuted 4 months after you did, and in all honesty she's definitely surpassed you with her amazing voice. And with a pretty face like hers, everyone talked about her .
• Just like they reacted with your debut.
• You thought that she’d be another like those idols you had worked with who put on a loving and lively attitude to their fans, and be an absolute bitch off stage when no ones watching. That’s how everything works in this industry after all, everyone just wants the money and attention.
• So the first time you met you merely gave dry responses, you didn’t mean to be rude but you just wanted this over with. Any questions she asked was met with one word or sentence.
Obviously your management didn’t like that attitude. Oh well.
• Yet somehow that didn’t stop Robin from trying to talk to you. She doesn’t seem bothered at the fact that you’re trying to push her away, and you could feel the eagerness to have a proper conversation.
...why???
• You pretty much gave up ignoring the idol and finally decided to talk to her properly as you turned around to face her and give your name, eventually you two became close friends.
• Sorry, did I say close? I meant reeeaaallly, really close.
• In a span of 3 weeks, Robin seems to be quite open to complimenting you. You'd be practicing your choreo or vocals and she'll be showering you with compliments that would leave you a flustered mess.
• In the next month, she invites you to small things that you're interested in. A certain movie you wanted to watch? She'll ask you to join her to watch it in a VIP area. A new restaurant that peaked your interest recently? Consider a room for just the two of you reserved. What a nice friend!
• How does she excuse these peaceful, romantical moments of being in each other's prescence without interruption from rabid fans or thirdwheeling staff? Just a personal hangout between two idols to know about each other more!
• But if it's just a hangout..why do you feel your heart beating faster when places her hand on yours? When she gives you a sweet smile that's only for you? When she wraps her arms around your waist to engulf you into a surprise hug? When-
• ..Ok bro I think you're in love, just saying.
• ..Oh shit you're in love with Penacony's rising idol.
• ...Good taste.
• Now this can go two ways: You silently accept that Robin might never reciprocate your feelings, or you confront her about it and reach a conclusion you've fallen for her charm.
• Oh wow! It turns out she requested to have a partnership with you because she fell in love at first sight since your first appearance on the stage. She followed your footsteps and tried to get closer and hoped you'd feel the same way about her.
• Whilst Robin was rambling and basically confessing her mutual love for you with red cheeks and held your hands gently, you just stared into her eyes.
• That's kinda cute...
• Wait what was that last part?— —
A/N: guys ik its rushed im sorry its like 1 am rn usiadfsdlkji
Btw there's going to be a pt 2 and here's some future works soon: -HoV!Reader meeting HSR!Himeko -Found Family with the Nameless -Modern AU Skating // Sparkle , Acheron , Robin , Sunday , Firefly , Adventurine -Guardian Angel!Robin and Sunday x reader -Genshin!Reader sent to the hsr universe -Streamer!AU // Adventurine , Sunday , Sparkle Shii that's kinda alot ermmmm... idc anymore goodnight gang :sob:

Living Ghost
(quick explanation for my buddies who don’t know Zelda lore: Thanks to wacky time space shenanigans this Link has ended up in a time period long after the events of the games he was in.  He stumbles across his own grave and reunites with a spirit he befriended as a kid who has been watching over said grave.  Poor guy just can’t catch a break when it comes to time shenanigans.)

Meeting Luffy's older brother is definitely not something you'd expected when coming to this country ㅡ but as things tend to do when Luffy is involved, it doesn't take long for everything to dissolve into chaos. But now you're back aboard the ship, plus one expected person.
You do your best not to stare at the man seated at the table, knowing that it's rude to do so ㅡ but he's a far cry from how Luffy behaves.
Afraid of being caught staring, you end up heading back out onto the deck of the Merry, listening to Luffy, Chopper and Usopp giggle about something.
"Is something wrong?" Ace's voice from behind you makes you jolt, turning to find him approaching you. "You were staring at me pretty hard earlier."
Your cheeks color. "No, I just ㅡ for brothers, you and Luffy sure don't act very similar."
Ace blinks. "No, I guess we don't."
He takes the space next to you against the railing, not so close that you touch, but enough you can feel the warmth radiating off of him. Having eaten the mera mera no mi, you suppose it's to be expected that he'd run warm.
"If you're worried about Luffy," you say quietly as you stare out at the sunlit waves, "I wouldn't. He might be eccentric for a captain, but we're glad to have him."
Ace stares at you in surprise, taking in your words before his expression softens. "I'm not going to say I wasn't worried at first," he says, "but looking at this crew...he has good people on his side. You included."
You smile at the soft praise. "I'm glad to be part of it." You turn away from the railing. "I know you said that you have business here, but we're glad to have you with us for as long as you are."
Again, there's a look of surprise on Ace's face before he grins. "Me too."

I had a drawing months back that went kinda viral I guess, and it getting out of my normal sphere of followers meant that I got to observe how folks far outside of my twitter sphere interact with twitter and others. For reference, I am talking about this image:
Tumblr media
The context, besides getting to draw my friend Jenny, was that I saw a picture that was of an anime girl that said "lets be in our early 30s together" and I was like "haha, I will make my own version of this." Part of it was also that I think aging is fine, and we need to stop stressing so much over staying young. "Lets be in our mid-thirties together" is not a joke, I sincerely wanted this image to be warm and inviting, to maybe give people hope that there will be friends and people who love you once you get to that age. I never thought I was going to make it to 30, and I just turned 35 this year, and I'm the happiest I've ever been.
Some responses were obviously teens/early 20s people saying they don't want to get that old, which is whatever. When you're that young the dirty thirty sounds so ugly. No one cool is in their 30s! Well, if you ignore the people who make all the things they like. These responses I waved these off.
I saw the typical twitter experience replies of "this doesn't apply to me?" Ok bitch! Go make your own like I did! And show me when you do, I'd love to see it!
There was a handful of people who were saying "retweet to scare a twink" which I felt was kind of rude. Not to me, but to the twinks out there. Aging doesn't make you less of a twink.
Lots of people were sending it to their significant others or saying they hope to find someone to be in their mid-thirties with, which I love. :3 It makes me happy!
The one kind of response which is what I made this post for and I'm so sorry that I've been rambling, that I found weird was the people who will reply to just you. The OP. As if they are replying to everyone in the thread. I'm not talking about in QRTs, just straight in the replies. "Don't forget how tired she looks in this." Brother I drew the picture. I know. And ever since then I feel like, as someone who loves to read the replies on other people's tweets, I notice this a lot more often. Who are they talking to? Is this what people are referring to when they say "Main Character Syndrome?" Or should I be lumping these together with the "why isn't this about my exact personal life situation" people?
My fiancé says I'm thinking about this too hard (I got engaged last month btw), and he's probably right. I can't help but be curious about how other people choose to interact with the internet and images and people on it. And, I guess, am I supposed to reply? How should I feel about these. I guess I have to decide that on my own.
For the record, you are all very normal/understandable when it comes to what you guys tag my stuff with. That you love the girls (same!), that they're very gender (love this), or wow is this [insert fetish](not my intention but that's the internet). I feel like the slime girls get the "gender" comment the most and you are all so right for that. Every time I see people reblog my ocs I think "Thank you for loving [name]."
That's all! This was a pointless post but I'm unemployed right now so I have too much time to overthink things for no reason. How do YOU feel about how people interact with your posts? Are they weird? Or are they normal about it.

I'm more curious on what reverse betrayal AU is, i couldn't really find anything in the tags sorry
Damn i SWEAR i wrote it down already. I guess Tumblr's tags are extra extra broken.
OKAY 👏
So everyone knows the canonical fanfiction trope of Betrayal AU's yes? Where the Main character of any fandom (in this case Ash) gets abandoned and spit on by their friends and partners except for the brief few that usually end up being the love interest?
In this case it's
Ash's friends leave him, ash's pokemon leave him except for the strong ones (pikachu is usually leaving him behind but i call bull so whatevs), Ash gets new pokemon, stronger and so much better (also legendaries, whoda thunk), he gets a love interest or a harem (cause why not) and then gets WICKED OP to the point its a bit unbelievable. Theb the betrayers come back and Ash wipes the floor with them while mocking them the whole time.
Its a well known trope, one that i used to adore myself, but i found it lacking after a hot min. The characters were always OOC, and the progression of events started to lean on terrible for me. No hate to the trope, i wrote one nyself once upon a time (unfinished), but it's nit in my wheelhouse anymore.
And so i made the Reverse Betrayal AU, mostly as a kick but really it started on the same premise but executed differently.
Ash's friends gather round, in this case, it had only gone up to alola so im sticking by that. My reasoning was that the little field trip down in Kanto was an excellent opportunity to get the rest of Ash's friends down there as a surprise!
Now, i want to point out the crucial information that Ash acts differently with each friend group. Not intentionally being deceitful, but more of, trying to fit into the type of person they need. For Misty that was a Brat, for May that was a Mentor, for Dawn a Sibling, for Iris an idiot, for Serena a hero. Etc etc.
Alola was the place where Ash *couldnt* do that so he finds himself in a mix of Mentor/friend/sibling role.
But when they all are there, Ash has a hard time trying to figure out what he should be and what he should stray into. And that leans into him being a Brat because Misty is a VERY loud personality in a way no one else was.
And boy do they grate on each other's nerves.
Misty is teasing him playfully, but Ash is biting back HARD. Not because he wants too, but the stress of the situation makes it hard for him to fight back just as playful. Especially with Iris there since her words used to cut before, but now he's painting Misty with the same brush but twice as deep.
And Misty doesnt appreciate this right, so this playfight on her end turns into actual fighting, words of anger and resentment speaking out on both sides.
"I WISH I NEVER MET YOU." Get's thrown out and the entire field goes quiet.
"Ditto." Ash growls.
And they turn away from each other.
And Brock is already trying to placate, he's seen this before a million times but then...
Everyone else jumps in.
Accusations are thrown, some side with Misty some side with Ash. None of these people are friends with each other, they all are connected through Ash.
And so Brock cuts them all off, cause the two were BOTH being uncalled for. And when he turns to Ash to ask what he was thinking.
The kid is outright gone.
No words no nothing and that leaves a deep deep dread in Brock's stomach.
"Oh he left, just like a little kid." Iris sighs, shaking her head as the others glare at her.
"No," Brock's voice trembles and that stops everyone else from really saying anything. "Ash can be rude and angry and wrong all he wants but he doesnt ever leave a conversation mod way- hell he doesnt even run away from a confrontation- this- this isnt right."
And while they look for him it starts ti become more and more clear that... None of these people are /friends/. They know Ash and Ash only.
And that starts *arguments*, screams of whose right and whose wrong and why Ash doesnt need to have a friend like *you.*
Its the take of, instead of Ashbeing abandoned by his friends. Its instead Ash 'abandoning' his friends instead. But its not really true, cause Ash wabts to be with his friends he's just...
Very mad right now.
Whoo i went on a tangent. I have more- somewhere- so ill need to look for it.

Okay, I wasn't going to say anything, but I've seen posts about this get passed around. And it's probably too late to push back on this, anyway, but I'm so frustrated I feel the need to say to say something. This is coming from a place of love- I just hate seeing this going around, and I want to offer some perspective on the matter.
First of all, regarding that poll where the user did not know how to pronounce 'Miette'- if you look in the replies, it doesn't take long to discover that the OP was genuinely confused about the pronunciation and, when corrected, was working to get it right. That poll came from a place of innocent ignorance. I hope the OP took it down and stopped reblogs and turned notes off or whatever, because some people said some awful shit. I hope you are the kind of person who is kind and understanding, in the face of such ignorance. Or, if you can't be that, I hope you can at the very least be quiet. (And props to the people in the replies who patiently and kindly explained things to the OP.)
Second of all, I've seen a lot of posts talking about literacy rates, and I'd like to point out that English literacy has very little to do with figuring how to pronounce a French fucking word, goddamn. The OP just didn't know. The dunking, the pointing, the laughing- rude, unnecessary, not helpful.
Thirdly, in response to the complaints of 'they don't even teach phonics in schools these days'- that's bullshit. Because the odds are very good that they didn't teach phonics in schools when you went to school, either.
When I was a kid, it was called Whole Language. It was the new hot literacy technique, and a lot of schools adopted it. It used cueing techniques and sight words and was very similar.
If you're a millennial, you might remember the commercials for Hooked on Phonics, and you might conclude that teaching phonics in schools was perhaps not common, if you think about that for a bit. If it was worth it to sell a whole reading tutoring program for struggling readers based in phonics, perhaps it might lead one to conclude that phonics weren't as common as other methods, right? You might not have been taught phonics to start. What you do know about phonics, you might have picked up in the past 20-30 years, right?
Okay. Lets go back further, you know Dick and Jane? It was based on, more or less, the same sight words principle, and those primers date from the 1930s, although I don't think that teaching technique came really into vogue until the 40s.
If you are alive, today, in the United States, the likelihood that you were not taught phonics in school is well above non-zero. Especially if you're a millennial.
The notable exception is the 1970s. And during that period of time, there were probably plenty of schools that still used fucking Dick and Jane. And plenty of schools that were starting to adopt Whole Language, because while it was popular in the 80's and 90's, it was developed before. So, Gen X, you didn't get out of this unscathed either, though you had a better chance of getting a phonics-based reading program, I think.
'Kids these days' are not less literate because they were taught wrong. A great deal of us who are alive and speak English as a first language were taught wrong.
(I also think this is the common way English as a Second Language is taught and I'm sorry if you learned sight words, it's so much less intuitive than phonics, and English phonics aren't particularly intuitive. But I know a lot less about this, and I'm not sure.)
The reason some younger people struggle with language and words that I, for example, don't, is that I've been reading and speaking the language a lot longer. That's it. That's likely the same thing for you.
Please quit mocking people for their lack of information, for a start. I don't blame you for not knowing this about the literacy programs, for example. I had to do a lot of research on this. Right? Odds are good, you didn't know this.
And you are hitting people who struggle with literacy for other reasons- English as a second language, for example. The people who deal with dyslexia, there's plenty of autistic people who struggle to communicate fluently in their first language, and many more people who struggle with learning, speaking, and otherwise communicating in English for a huge variety of reasons.
Even if you're right, you're hitting people who had no choice in the language method they were taught from. They were five.
I don't think people mean to be unkind, generally (some do, but we block and move on), but it's really frustrating to a lot of snark circulate without the greater context of 'actually, a lot of English speakers of all age groups were taught English this way, especially USAmericans' and 'hey, what does English literacy have to do with pronouncing a French word, anyway?'
Okay? Okay.
Love you bye

171.
There's a wedding in the castle that everyone goes to because it's Barius' niece. Callum doesn't really know much about her—he hadn't had the easiest time making friends when he was younger (step-prince thing and all), and she's a few years older than him so he he's never has much to do with her. He thinks he remembers her flirting with Soren when they were younger maybe?—but everyone else is going, so he goes because he doesn't get a choice.
"It'll be fun," Ez promises.
Weddings, in Callum's opinion, are supposed to be for close friends and family, which he, in this case, is very much not. "I don't think I've ever even spoken to Alys," he grumbles.
"Yeah, but she's Barius' family, and Barius is basically our family. Come on, Callum. You should come." Ez gives him that look he perfected years ago: big eyes, jutted-out lip, and Callum rolls his eyes and sighs, lips twitching just a little at how well his brother can wheedle.
So he goes. It's a good time. Opeli conducts the ceremony, as always, and Alys and her new husband say their vows and kiss before a crowd of friends and family and friends of family (Barius cries as the ceremony closes), and then it's all dancing and drinks outside in the warm spring air. There are lights strung over the gardens, and Soren has too much wine and Ez has too much cake, and Callum finds it isn't too bad, all things considered. Alys seems friendly enough. He hopes she and her new husband have a lovely time.
But long before the party winds down, Callum drifts away, as he's wont to do these days. It's too loud and there's too many people and he just doesn't really have it in him to dance. He's been told it's rude to leave before the bride and groom so he sticks it out, but he does, eventually, find a bench a little way away, close enough that he can still hear the laughter and pretend he's having a good time, but far enough from the crowd that they can't see the downturn in his lips.
Ez finds him when the tea comes out. He brings over two teacups, his smile genuine but apologetic and a little remorseful all at once. He sits down next to Callum and the air buzzes with a bunch of things he wants to say that he doesn't. Callum accepts the tea without a word.
"You okay?" Ez asks in the end.
Callum breathes out a chuckle and keeps his eyes on his tea. "It's just loud," he says. "I had fun."
"Did you actually?"
"Yeah," he says. "It was a good night."
Ez snorts ruefully. "You don't have to lie. I'm sorry I made you come out. I know you're still having a hard time."
"Mm." Callum only shrugs and stares into his tea. Steam curls over his face but he barely feels it. There are ripples forming over the reflection of the moon.
He sighs. "Do you think this might have been us if she'd stayed?"
Ez chuckles sadly and sets a hand on his shoulder. "Yeah," he murmurs. "I think so."
