- Masterlist
Thunder claps loudly, answering lightning's call; the skies sending down rain in buckets. Grey clouds rolls against eachother, harsh wind sending leaves plucked off their homes and through the air. Your umbrella hardly stood a chance against the temperamental weather. You were forced to hold it tightly in your grip, and low over your head to avoid being soaked.
The forecast predicted no such thing, and it was only by chance, you packed your umbrella before catching the train. You suspect, that neither Hoseok or Namjoon shared your luck, as they were taking forever to meet at the entrance like they promised.
Everyone was trying to get inside before the rain got any worse, running through the downpour and splashing through puddles. Skirting by you to retreat into the warmth of the building that loomed behind. You should be doing the same. Your cousin had long abandoned you to face the storm, dripping wet, because he was too tall to seek shelter under your umbrella for one. Jungkook had slipped inside not two minutes after climbing the stairs, shivering harder than a leaf in autumn, telling you that he'd come back and wait with you through chattering teeth.
You doubted it, as you're still left standing alone on the steps of the academy ten minutes after, and he was probably dry and warm in the safety of his dorm room. Burrowed under the thick blanket he'd packed as a last minute thought this morning, and most likely alseep, too. Jungkook found peace in rainy weather, preferring to sleep through it than sit and listen to the howling winds. You hoped it wouldn't be trouble to wake him later for first term assembly, as he always slept deeper than he'd normally when rain fell. Waking him on a normal day was a task enough.
You hear Hoseok before you see him, his distinctive cackle reaching your ears above the howling winds, happy and loud as Hoseok was on his best days. You turn head just in time to see Namjoon picking himself off the ground, mud smeared all down his front, and Hoseok helping despite trying his best to stop laughing. Their trunks sat at their sides, though Namjoon's was toppled over, no doubt, he tripped over it running through the rain.
You could only shake your head, abandoning your own trunk atop the stairs to walk down and towards the boys, who looked very much like wet puppies; hair and clothes stuck to their forms. Your attention mostly on the tear of fabric at Namjoon's knee, and the terrible bruise that blossomed with rubies, already being washed away by the rain.
One of Namjoon's ears swivel at your approach, hearing the sound of your footsteps in the soft earth, before he turns his head. Hoseok turns as well, his smile brighter than the sun that hid all morning, tail wagging a mile a minute in his excitement.
"Bunny!" Hoseok wraps you in his arms, uncaring that you would rather remain dry, hopping up and down as though he hasn't seen you in years with all the energy his hybrid instinct commanded. His scent was drowned out by the rain and barely there vanilla meets your nose. Namjoon, gentleman as he is, was a bit more reserved in his greeting - though his tail did give him away- flashing a smile that's all dimples and teeth and saying that he didn't want to get mud on you.
"What kept you guys?" Your voice was muffled against Hoseok's wet sweater, the light blue a few shades darker and soaked right through. He's warm despite this, warm enough that you can feel his heat right through his clothes. You shiver lightly when cold droplets of rain water races towards the ends of his hair and onto your warm skin. You peek at Namjoon over the fold of Hoseok's ear, finding him sheepish and looking away from you.
"Joonie lost his luggage card again." Hoseok rolls his eyes despite the fondness of his tone, pulling away from you and almost sending you careening forward. He steadies you with a hand on your elbow as he grabs the handle of his trunk with the other. "Took us a while to get his stuff."
"Let's get out of the rain before you two catch a cold." You say, tugging on the sleeve of Hoseok's sweater. Either of them with a cold isn't something you want to repeat, remembering during the spring when you had to watch Hoseok's energy dim while he laid up under covers with a fever. Sneezing up a storm with flushed skin and a sore throat to boot. He barely eats when he has a cold, and the last thing you wanted was him having to deal with all of that and still having do his studies.
The three of you run towards the entrance, once under the safety of the awning above the staircase, Namjoon and Hoseok shakes the rain water from their hairs and wring their clothes the best they could.
"I hope this year is better than last year," Namjoon mumbles, as he holds the large dark oak door open for you and Hoseok to pass in first; ever the Alpha. The door shuts heavily behind you, and the entrance hall was unsurprisingly empty, the students having already gone to their dorms. "Last year sucked ass."
"You failed one exam, Joon." Hoseok's laugh echos, bouncing on the high walls and back to you, "Like I said then: not the end of the world."
"But it was History. History! How could I just flunk?!" Namjoon seems just as upset as he did last year, ears flat against his hair, a whine stuck in the back of his throat. He was fussing with his shirt, mud-caked and damp and no doubt uncomfortable.
"Well, I did tell you not to stay up all night reading, but you didn't listen so..." You shrug, marching forward and ignoring Namjoon's groan.
The wheels of your trunk glides smoothly over the polished floors, the boys bickering behind you as they followed. From the entrance hall, a grand staircase lead upwards and splits left and right, where the dorms were. The railings of the staircase shined dimly under the glow of candlelight, twirling in intricate designs of swirls and dips in between. White marble and gold, and a carpet of navy blue; the school's colours. Paintings of past headmasters and abstract art lined the walls, candle flames flickering in little alcoves, casting their dancing shadows across every surface.
Prey and Predator Hybrids had dorms, designed to prevent the clashing of second natures and the safety of the students. Though they were still allowed to mingle with eachother during their free time, their living spaces were kept separate. Which was ideal for the more skittish hybrids, and those who would rather be around people of their own calibre.
When you reach the top of the staircase, you stop, looking out through the large stained window. The rain seemed to be coming down even harder, beating against the window like bullets and racing eachother to the stone panes. Hoseok wraps his arms around your middle, much like he always did since you all were kids, following Namjoon around like ducklings to their mother. His clothes were damp and cold, and his hands lacked the warmth they usually held, clamy and trembling slightly against your arm.
The dynamic within your group wasn't a strange one, as many hybrid children grew up in mixed communities and are quite used to eachother. You would always take pride in where you grew up, the little suburban area where prey and predator hybrids got along even on their worst days. Where all the neighborhood kids played soccer together and would gather under fairy lights in the park to watch movies from an age old projector on Friday nights. Playing hide and seek around your backyard after school let out, almost never letting Namjoon play because he was too good at seeking and that just wasn't fair.
"You guys are the worst!" Comes an indignant yell, echoing from the entrance hall. Seokjin was hobbling in, pulling his trunk behind him and heaving a duffle bag that looked suspiciously like Hoseok's in his other hand. Umbrella wet and dripping, hanging from the crook of his arm. His hair looked damp and wind swept, already curling at the ends, as well as the shoulders of his black coat. "The lack of respect, I swear! I thought I forgot you on the train."
Hoseok pulls away from you with a snicker, "I texted you though?"
If only Seokjin was a cat hybrid, you'd imagine his tail swishing dangerously in warning right now. But you can only spot the flickering of his rounded ears as he huffs out a sigh, loud and dramatic as Seokjin ever was. "My hands are full, and I'm pretty sure my phone's lost at the bottom of this thing." He kicks lightly at his trunk, frowning, looks at Namjoon and squints, "why are you covered in mud?"
Namjoon clears his throat, muttering down at his mud covered self, cheeks flushing pink under Jin's scrutiny. The man clambers up the stairs, struggling just a bit with the load he carries, his tangent coming before him, voice loud and teasing, "Oh don't worry, I'll be out of your hairs soon."
Seokjin was two years above you all, and would graduate at the end of the semester. You'd all had a silent agreement to never bring it up, that, and the fact you would be no longer seeing Seokjin once the year was over. Of course, Seokjin was never told this, and proceeded to bring it up whenever he felt the need to. Usually, when either of you decided to be a brat.
Seokjin unwinds Hoseok's arms away from you, plopping the straps of the duffle bag into his hand. "Go on, you two will catch a cold in those clothes," He shoos them away with a hand, "We'll see you guys later."
Hoseok and Namjoon wave their goodbyes, going up the stairs to the predator dorms. You and Seokjin go in the opposite direction, discussing your plans for the semester.
A paper plane goes soaring through the air, dipping and gliding, before it lands safely on the podium at the front of the lecture hall. Hoots, hollers and high-fives are exchanged before another one follows, the bored students trying to see who could reach the podium with their paper planes.
You were just a little sleepy, despite having a good rest, the thunderstorm that struck lasted through the night, and you slept like a rock. Woken by Jungkook banging on your door for the first class of the morning, his hair sticking up at odd angles, looking sleepy when he brought you breakfast from the cafe on the grounds. It still drizzled a bit, but you could see the sun just peeking from behind grey clouds, a bird ducking and weaving through the light sprinkle.
The back of the class was as roudy as you remembered, loud and uncontrolled as it usually was. It was made up of mostly predators, and the less shy prey hybrids, who were comfortable around their peers. Making crude jokes, and some actually being productive and talking about school work.
You can hear the smacking of Nora William's gum between her teeth, Taehyung laughing loudly at something Jimin said. Jungkook sat to your right, his back to you as he talked with Namjoon, rocking side to side in the little room that he has to do so, while they talked about one thing or the other. His ears high in the air as he listens, one folded at the tip, the other twitching at all the sounds in the room.
The class was beginning to fill, students finding their seats just as Professor Ji walks in through the doors. Another paper plane sores over his head and through the door as he closes it.
"Alright, you lot. Settle down." He says, his green eyes scan the room, the slits of his pupils dilates unnervingly and silence falls. The professor was known for his seriousness in the classroom, and as a rare snake hybrid and a natural predator of many, he commanded respect in and outside the lecture hall. Though, he had his moments, when it came to his subject and his students' grades, he was a no nonsense man.
He walks to the podium, briefcase in hand, an easy smile on his face. He clears away all the paper planes scattered, setting them aside neatly. He must be in a great mood this morning. "Welcome back, by the way."
Professor Ji takes a moment to settle his things, setting up the projector and his laptop before turning the lights off. "Now, I need all of you to pay attention. As this is your third year, advancement exams are coming up at the end of the term - don't give me that." He pauses, placing his hands on his hips with a frown as groans sounded from various students. "I emailed all your material to you over your break so you should've been prepared."
The projector comes on with a click, a presentation lit up on the white board behind Professor Ji. Giving a run down of what is to be expected in the exam.
"Listen to me very carefully, I don't want any of you failing my class. Advancement exams are very important, and you will be given assignments in a few of your courses that will make up most of your final grade. These assignments are mandatory, and they must be completed for you to get graded."
You quietly take notes, writing down the things you needed to rememeber, while Professor Ji carried on. Hybrid history wasn't your favourite subject, there's always so much writing and so many things to remember. Namjoon was paying very close attention to everything Professor Ji said, no doubt his failing last term was haunting his waking hours. He scribbled everything down in that messy scrawl of his, leg bouncing under his desk.
"Alright, now before I get into what your assignment will be, I want to let you know that it's a duo project. Your partners have already been decided, and no, there will be no exchanging. For this term, you and your designated partner will study eachother and report at the end of each week with your notes."
Whispers rise around the class, and you and Namjoon share a look over Jungkook's head.
"And just to keep things fun, I won't tell you who your partners are. When the class is over, I'll give you the names of your partner and you can meet up at whatever time is best for you both."
As the class goes on, and Professor Ji started the introduction to the term's lesson, you were a little on edge. You don't have much friends, even though you're quite the social butterfly and get along fine with everyone, your friends are the boys you grew up with. Your partner already being chosen for you made you nothing but anxious, you had a feeling that the pairings would be a random pick of students. You can only hope that the person you got paired with wasn't bad.
At the end of the class, Professor Ji had begun passing out assignment guides and giving each student the name of their partner.
"Your assignment is based off the hypothesis that Predator and Prey Hybrids can co-exist without clashing. A social experiment, if you will. Think of it as a way of getting to know your classmates better, and building stronger bonds between the hierarchy." He takes his time as he explains, walking between the rows and rows of seats, and the more he went on the more you can feel the tension in the room growing. When he reaches your row, handing Jungkook his guide, you see your cousin sink lower in his seat, ears dropping and eyes going wide. His leg bounces under his desk, a nervous habit he never quite grew out of, as his eyes meet yours.
Professor Ji lays your guide gently on the table in front of you, and at the top of the laminated cover, was the name of your partner. Your heart kicks against your ribcage, and you just know, you know he's staring at the back of your head because you can feel it. The kind of burning itch in the back of your mind that someone was searing a hole into your skin with how hard their staring. You don't want to turn around, because no one has said a word since they received their guides, an unspoken agreement amongst the class to not mention a thing about their partners.
You can see Jungkook trying to take a peek, slowly leaning in your direction, but you're faster, covering the top of the guide with your hand. He shouldn't have to know yet, he would only worry and make a fuss. You catch his pout at the corner of your eye, the way he slumps back into his seat.
"You guys have two months to complete this assignment and hand it in for grading, I want you to be extremely careful while doing this, because yes, we are aware that squabbles are unavoidable. All of your findings must be written down and reported. That's all for today."
"Wait, really?" Hoseok was loud, as he usually was, eyes wide and sunshine smile all but gone. He sat on your bed, amongst the scattered papers and his notes, looking all soft in his sun yellow sweater and stolen fuzzy socks. The soft swish of his tail silent now as he ponders, "Are they crazy?"
"It's mandatory, it's a social experiment. We're all being paired up." Namjoon sighs, picking a dust bunny out of your hair, fingers tickling the soft fur of your ears. He leans back against the couch, palm warm against the back of your neck. Not in anyway domineering, but the contact you needed to ground you, your natural skittish behaviour had gone to new heights in the past two hours. "I don't think it's a good idea either. Some of us are totally okay with hanging around prey hybrids, but that's not the same for everyone. This isn't going to end well."
"I think it all depends on who we get pared up with." You mumble, shifting your legs so that they laid thrown over Namjoon's lap. "I heard Jungkook got paired with Nora..."
"He's a dead man." Hoseok laughs, eyes sparkling. He pauses, stuffing his mouth with a bite of cinnamon roll and shakes his head, "Too bad I'm not taking your class though, Y/n. Would've pulled some strings so we could get paired up."
"You can't just wag your tail and get everything you want, Hobi." Namjoon rolls his eyes, ear twitching, "Your charm doesn't work on everyone."
"The pairings are random," You sigh, closing your book, turning your head to look at the wolf hybrid. "I got paired with Yoongi."
Hoseok promptly chokes, coughing as he swallowed and sucked in a breath of air at the same time. He's red in the face and struggling to reach his water bottle, and you surrender your own.
"Min?" Namjoon asks, strong brows disappearing under his bangs, concern dancing in his eyes.
"Is there another Yoongi in this academy?" You laugh, and lift your shoulder in a shrug, "It's fine really,"
"No it's not." Namjoon interjects, shaking his head, "Do these people think? Why would they pair you with him of all people?"
"Wait, are we talking about the same Min Yoongi who got into a fight on the last day of school last term? I heard he wasn't coming back this semester." Hoseok had finally calmed, his voice a little hoarse, and still coughing a bit. "Heard he's bad news too, one of the big cat hybrids who thinks they own the ground they walk on." He rolls his eyes, tucking your water bottle against his side, and goes back to writing his notes.
Namjoon heaves a heavy sigh, fingers tapping at your skin, "If I talk to Professor Ji, maybe he can switch your partner for you? I work well with you, we know eachother so it would be easier, not to mention safer."
"Joon, I think that's the reason why he chose the way he did. He can't put people who already work well together to do the assignment." You say, patting his thigh, because you do appreciate him looking out for you, "It's fine, honest."
Namjoon looks dejected, ears falling flat against his hair, a frown creasing his forehead. "I still don't like it."
"I know," You sigh, pulling your textbooks to your lap, "It'll be okay though, no need to worry."
Maybe you shouldn't have said that to Namjoon. You can see him halfway across the library, talking to his partner, Yejun. A sweet mouse hybrid who looked more nervous than you felt, sitting across from Namjoon. He was really trying his best to not be intimidating, talking softly and smiling with dimples and all, trying to ease her stress. He looks up and catches your eye, sending a little wave.
He asked for you to stay in his sight when you'd both entered the library before he'd went over to greet his assignment partner. Still a little bristled, a little on edge because Kim Taehyung had the audacity to come within five feet of you the day before yesterday.
>Flashback<
"Joon, can you not?" Hoseok was trying to push away Namjoon, who was adamant to get him just as wet as he was. "I'm not planning on getting in." He manages to slip away, skating a bit on the wet tiles near the edge of the pool as he ran. Everyone stood in their own groups, dressed in their school issued swim suits, all except Seokjin, who was standing at the double doors, taking attendance.
There wasn't a lot of students who took up swimming as an extra curricular activity, mainly the felines; true to their nature. But quite a few showed up to what was supposed to be the first meeting of the term, and no one was inclined to pay attention. The boys were goofing around, Jungkook was on his fourth lap around the pool, showing off to the girls that giggled and swooned.
Seokjin was looking a bit out of place, navy blue blazer still buttoned and clipboard in hand. He looked tired, trying his best to talk over everyone else. He managed this club, as head prefect, alongside Taylor, who was out on the court with the predators this evening.
You watch fondly from a corner, shaking your head as Seokjin tried in vain to stop the chaos, of Namjoon and Hoseok playing slip 'n slide at the poolside, yelling about how dangerous that is. Half listening to the mindless chatter of Kelly, a club mate, who was talking a mile a minute. You can see the regret in his eyes, knowing that he was so excited to take up the responsibility of head prefect in his last year.
Jungkook gets out of the pool, wrapping a towel around his shoulders before trodding over to you, just narrowly avoiding Seokjin's flailing arms. "Think he'll resign?"
You both watch as Seokjin pull Namjoon and Hoseok by their ears, away from the edge of the pool, much to their embarrassment, and everyone else's amusement. "Cut it out! Don't make me scruff you."
"Nope."
"Kook?" You poke his side just to watch him squirm away, hand swatting at yours, "Heard you got Nora to do your assignment with. How's that going?"
Your cousin immediately flushes, hands coming up to cover his ears, "Well, we haven't officially met up yet...but she gave me her number yesterday!"
You couldn't help but smile, his little crush on the fox hybrid obvious for everyone to see. Still though, you can sense his nerves.
One of the double doors swing open, stopping just before it hits the wall, but it was enough to capture everyone's attention. In swaggers Kim Taehyung, scanning the crowd of faces until his eyes meet yours, and with a wide, boxy smile, he jogs over. And never without his partner in crime, Jimin stood by the open door, a less than pleased look on his face.
Namjoon, Hoseok and Seokjin were all at your sides in an instant, with Seokjin pulling you back a couple of steps. They've been like this for the entire day, of course Hoseok was the one unable to keep his mouth shut and told Seokjin and Jungkook immediately after he left your dorm the night before. Since Seokjin was constantly busy, and Hoseok barely had classes with you this semester, Namjoon and Jungkook had been glued to your side. Acting as though you were going to slip away any given second, like overly protective parents with too tight a hold on their child.
"If you wanted to join the club, you missed the application period." Seokjin says, jaw tight as he hands you off to Jungkook. Seokjin was friends with everyone, and even if he wasn't, his tone was never sharp when speaking.
"Relax, I just came to drop something off." Taehyung rolls his eyes, unfazed by the tension, stripped tail sweeping the floor languidly. He pulls a slip of paper from his blazer pocket to wave in Namjoon's face. "Yoongi's been busy."
Namjoon had been expecting Yoongi to show for himself, not send the two that trailed behind him. To drop a note no less. He snatches the paper from Taehyung's fingers without a word, thunderstorm brewing in his scent, smelling like the air right before a bad rainfall.
Shrugging, Taehyung leaves, "Sorry I interrupted, I'll knock next time!"
As soon as the door pulls shut you hear the collective sigh of everyone in the room. The club was mostly prey, as the predators normally preferred a more active sport, -- with Hoseok and Namjoon being the exception here, honestly you have no idea why they're here when you're perfectly fine with Seokjin and Jungkook -- and having a Tiger hybrid walk into a safe space was enough to have everyone on edge.
Of course, that didn't stop everyone from talking. Whispers were quick to rise in Taehyung's absence, most of them loud enough for you to know exactly what they were talking about. One subject, and two why's. You, being the subject of choice, and the why's wondering about Taehyung being here in the first place and the reaction of your closest friends.
"Guys, I'm not a kid." You sigh, shaking off the grip Jungkook had on your wrist, "You don't need to look after me all the time."
You're hoping that today would be better, both Jungkook and Namjoon had met with their partners at least twice for this week already, and you were the only one lagging behind. Everyone had already started their assignments, differences upon first meetings or not.
Namjoon goes to protest, lips parting, but decidedly closes them. You take the paper from him, leaving the wolf grumbling under his breath, playfulness all but evaporated.
<End Flashback>
You still had the paper Taehyung had brought, tucked away in your assignment guide, a phone number and time written neatly on it. The time you were supposed to meet Yoongi for yesterday, but of course, he never showed. You had been so tempted to text the number, to ask why he didn't show up at the time he proposed, but you couldn't. You sat staring at the slip of paper for a good twenty minutes before giving up. You hope he's just late today, never mind it's a whole fifteen minutes, you're giving him the benefit of a doubt.
You sigh, opening your note book to doodle while you waited, head raising when the library doors creek open. It wasn't Yoongi, but a frantic looking Jungkook, who's eyes darts around the room before scurring over to a table near yours so quickly you thought you'd imagined it. With furrowed brows, you get up and walk quickly over.
"Jungkook what are you doing?" You peek under the desk where you're pretty sure you saw Jungkook's ears disappear. He's huddled in the corner, looking at you with eyes that seem too big for his face.
"Go away Y/n, you're gonna sell me out." He whispers harshly, waving his hand at you, "I'm hiding from Nora."
Before you can ask why, the library door opening makes you look up, spotting Nora scanning the rows of desks with her cat like eyes. She sends you a wave and a smile, red tail dipped in white swishing lightly behind her as she skips over to you.
"Y/n Darling!" Her voice was almost too loud, as she stops next to you, "Have you seen Jungkook? We're supposed to report today."
"Uh..." You smile, unsure if she could tell you're about to lie with the twitching of your nose. You can feel Jungkook staring at you, doe eyes wide and pleading. You're not exactly sure why he wanted to get away from her, but you are sure that you'd be hiding too if you were paired with her. "Haven't seen him. You could try the gym though, he lives in there."
You have to protect your own, after all.
Nora stares at you for a moment, enough to make you nervous. Slowly, a smile slips back onto her face, "Okay! Well if you see him let me know!" And with that she takes herself and her excited energy out of the library, the doors clicking shut behind her.
You wait a couple moments, before you snicker, looking at Jungkook who was crawling from under the table. "I thought you had a crush on her?"
"That was before I found out she was crazy. She's been trying to pin a fox tail on me all morning." Jungkook groans as he drops into the chair opposite you, ears flopping at the sides of his head. "Hey... Aren't you supposed to be with that Yoongi guy right now?"
"Oh, yeah..." You fiddle with your pen, your own ears flopping like Jungkook's with the drop of your mood. "He didn't show, again."
"Yeah, he does that. Doesn't show up to much mixed classes either. I honestly don't know how he passes anything." Jungkook looks past you, suddenly sitting up straight, ears following suit as they fly up into the air, "Ah, well, anyway. I'll see you later, Bun. I'm gonna go hide in my dorm." And as quickly as he dashed into the library, he was gone, through the doors as quick as his feet could carry him.
You sit, blinking at the spot he left so quickly.
"Bad mouthing me already?"
You startle, turning around in your chair so fast it wobbles, to find Min Yoongi, standing there in his leather jacket and distressed black jeans. Hands in his pockets, silver bracelets clinking softly as he walks around to the other side of the table. He drops his bag first, at the foot of the table, dark eyes never leaving yours as he sits. A glint of sliver nearly blinds you, reflecting the stream of sunlight coming through the window briefly, and you eye the hoop earring that dangled from his hybrid ear.
A hybrid's ears were sensitive, and you wonder just how high his pain tolerance is to have a piercing gun go through it. He was staring too, gaze intimidating as he narrowed his eyes at you.
The silence seemed too loud in the library, too harsh on your sensitive ears and you struggled to find something to discuss - to make small talk at least. Instead, you glue your eyes to the book before you, notes scribbled messily across the page; incomplete.
He's in most of your classes, some of them he rarely makes it to. Of course, you've seen him around the grounds, mostly with his friends, Taehyung and Jimin and Nora on occasion. You've never once had a conversation with him, though you never had a reason to.
"You -uh.." You take a breath, he has yet to say another word, simply staring at you. You felt like crawling out of your skin, this was so very awkward. You can feel your hybrid ears twitching, leg bouncing under the table. Maybe you should have taken up Namjoon's offer, tried to get your partners switched, it would've been good for you, especially your nerves. "You didn't show up yesterday...you didn't text me either..."
You try your best to keep your voice steady, to not let the nervous, fearful nature of your hybrid show in the face of an unknown predator.
Yoongi was calm, looking relaxed in his seat, he actually looks bored, as though he had a million and one things he'd rather be doing at this time. You wouldn't put it past him, honestly. Even though you'd reassured your friends that you would be fine, you're not so sure anymore when all you wanted to do was hide.
You'd grown up comfortable around predators, you'd grown up having absolutely no reason to fear them and learning to ignore the need to run away that laid under the surface of your hybrid instinct. You avoid eye contact, staring still at your notes, not knowing where to lead the conversation as he had yet to answer - say anything for that matter - and you sit with your lips in a firm line. You can hear your heart in your ears, beating so loud you're surprised Yoongi hadn't said anything about it.
"I don't have your number to text you." Yoongi says after a prolonged silence, his voice soft as though he was trying not to scare you further. And if that was the case, you appreciate that. "I was hoping you'd text me first so I can save it."
"Oh.." You feel stupid, because of course he doesn't have your number. "Right, sorry."
"I don't bite you know." His teasing tone catches your attention, catching the smirk he didn't try to hide when you finally look at him. "You can relax."
When you finally allow yourself a moment to breathe, to just let the tension out of your limbs, you relax, watching as Yoongi takes out his assignment guide and a note book, setting them down on the table softly, "So...How exactly do you want to do this?"
Working with Yoongi certainly brought it's own set of challenges. He was a bit - and you're not sure if it's purely by nature - standoffish. He would come at whatever time you'd set, once you'd texted his number weeks ago, take his notes for the assignment and be on his way. On some days, even though you'd gotten better at looking him directly in his eyes, he'd always find something else to look at.
Outside of your assignment was a different issue, Yoongi would make no move to talk to you aside from the times you'd meet in the library. He'd pass by you in the hallways, not even glancing in your direction, not that it bothered you.
Okay, maybe you're lying just a bit.
You couldn't help but notice, that your classmates made an effort to be around their assignment partner, whether they're supposed to be or not. Getting to know eachother as Professor Ji said in the first week, even Jungkook was hanging around Nora with ease now. He was always eager to tell you what he did with her when he had time, always asking how your assignment was going with Yoongi. A question which you always have to lie to answer, because it's really not going anywhere.
You're not sure just how much you're getting to learn about Yoongi if he leaves after thirty minutes and pretends not to know you for the remainder of the week. It's frustrating, if anything.
You're not ignorant to the staring of your peers, Namjoon's constant worry. You wanted to get to know Yoongi beyond the whispers and the stigma, beyond everyone trying to stay clear of him and his group of friends. That was part of the assignment, but it's hard when he doesn't open up.
You'd like to think that Yoongi considers you a friend on most days. He was nice, within the confines of the library, away from the mass of students. He'd bring you tea sometimes, from the cafe, somehow knowing what you liked and he'd slide it across to you without a word. Always contradicting himself.
You'd met his friends, once or twice, when they decided to grace the library with their presence. You were a little surprised to find Jungkook among them, looking relaxed and joking around with Taehyung and bickering with Nora. They'd come to your table, shifting around other small tables and chairs to sit with you both, and you'd watch as Yoongi closed up with his friends around and be quiet again. You tried to keep up with them, ignore the look Jimin was giving you from the other side of the table.
Jungkook had been your buffer that day, clearly showing that he'd gotten to know them through working with Nora. Trying his best to make sure you didn't feel left out - uncomfortable, because he knows how you get- pulling you in the conversation
On other days, when his friends aren't around, he'd ask how your studies are going for you, despite taking the same classes as you. He'd ask what courses you'd take after the Advancement exams. On some days, when everything is a bit too much to handle, he'd take your books from you and tell you to relax. He'd tell you little jokes and laugh with his shoulders.
He's smart too, you were surprised to find that he had all his notes when you'd taken a session to catch up on homework, and he'd stop you halfway answering a question wrong and corrected your mistake.
You'd noticed when you'd stop thinking of him as just your assignment partner, you knew you were way past gone when his scent alone brought you comfort. A kind of unexplainable thing, really, his scent is like freshly brewed coffee - something you had a good time giggling at when you remembered it's all Yoongi ever drinks - and the faintest of cinnamon. It's easy to tell when he's upset about something, though he says nothing, the cinnamon burns and stings your nose like you've stuck it in a packet of cinnamon powder and you're fighting an oncoming sneeze.
On those days you know not to push him to talk, so you'd just sit quietly and do your homework. Eventually, he'd talk about it, reluctantly, but he talks, and he reaches across the table as though he wants to hold your hand. He always seem to think better of it, and his fingers would always remain inches from yours, never really touching, but never too far for the sake of impulsive action.
Honestly, you don't know what to do with yourself about it. On some days you'd think you're somewhat friends and conversation would flow with ease, and on other days, it's like you're just meeting him for the first time and have no idea where to start. A nonstop run around.
Of course, Prey and Predator hybrids date, it's not uncommon, it happens; people can't help who they fall for. Though, he seemed way too cool for the likes of you, with his undercut, silver always dangling from his ears and adorning his fingers, the air of mystery that surrounded him.
And you're just, well, you. A bunny hybrid who he'd rather not be around if he could help it. You're positive that the Yoongi you meet at the library, and the one you'd pass in the hallways are two different people.
You watch him, sitting across from you as he always did, chin propped in his palm as he wrote something down in his book, his scent was just coffee today. And you wondered if it would be best to just get it over with; pull the bandaid off.
"Why do you hate me?"
Yoongi pauses, twitching ear stops still, as well as the fidgeting of his fingers. His eyebrows draw together with his frown, silent, tongue poking his cheek.
"I..I don't hate you, I just..." Yoongi flounders, fishing for his words, eyes scanning the high ceilings as though they could give him what he was looking for. He sighs, loudly in the silence of the library, and you sit patiently waiting. The longer he stays quiet avoiding your gaze, the more you regret asking.
"Right." You sigh, focusing on your notes of Hybrid History, not really reading, just staring at the words. You tried your best to not be bothered by it, at least you know he doesn't hate you, not exactly, but he also can't give a reason as to why he's always so standoffish with you.
You've seen him with his friends, on many occasions before the Academy thought this experiment was a good idea. You've seen him direct his smile and the sound of his laugh at others, but never at you, and it shouldn't bother you. It really shouldn't. You thought you were going well, he's started speaking to you at least, intsead of coming and staring at anything but you for thirty minutes before he goes off to God knows where.
"Psst! Yoongi!"
Yoongi looks over your shoulder, waving his hand in greeting with a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He sighs, lip caught between his teeth. You didn't need to turn around to know that Park Jimin was sauntering his way over. His fingers brush your ears before he speaks, "Your ears are really soft," he practically purrs and you shift away from him.
"I'll see you next week." Yoongi says, gathering his books and shoving them into his bag in a haste. You can only hum, not looking at him. "Come on, go flirt somewhere else." He shoos Jimin with a wave of his hand, and follows after him not after.
Cinnamon burns your nose.
You know it'd be right back to him pretending you don't exist outside the library. That bothers you, you two should be able to meet and talk in the hallway like friends, because you are friends, aren't you?
That specific train of thought doesn't quite leave you for the rest of the evening, hopping around your head enough for everyone to notice.
Hoseok was waving his hand right before your face, "You know, you're seeing him tomorrow, no need to pout about it." He pokes your bottom lip with his finger; eyes telling. Though, Namjoon was a bit confused, just coming out of Professor Ji's office at the end of Hoseok's sentence.
"Who's pouting?" He looks at you, a tiny furrow in his brow, and you would have focused on it, if you hadn't caught Hoseok's smirk at the corner of your eye. A smirk that meant nothing good for you in the long run, and you knew then, that Hoseok already knew and before he could open his mouth and literally throw you to the wolves, you to the best thing.
"Nobody. No one's pouting, why would anyone be pouting?- How'd it go?" Deflect and change the subject, take a moment to reflect on your terrible attempt.
Namjoon blinks at you a couple of times, as though you'd grown a second head, but he shakes his head, "...It went alright, he did say I brought it in too early though.."
"No shocker there." Hoseok snickers, but he was still looking at you, and you know very well he wasn't laughing at Namjoon. "Can we go to the cafe? Jin said they got the cinnamon rolls back."
As it is, the two month period for your assignment was almost over, with just a couple of weeks left, of course you had Namjoon to remind that the deadline was coming up. The three of you make idle chatter as you walk, heading out of the building to the cafe that was a three minute walk from the Academy. The mood was light, with Hoseok fooling around and telling jokes, every once in a while he'd wiggle his eyebrows at you and smile like he knew a big secret.
"Knock it off. If you make me spill my coffee I'll make you buy me two just outta spite."
Of course, you'd see Yoongi now, coming from the direction that you're going, someone tell the marionette to cut the strings, please and thanks. He's carefully holding his drink away from himself, aggravation clear in the furrow of his brows and the way his jaw clenches. Jimin was clinging to his back like a koala, matching his steps like a four legged creature just learning to walk, tail wrapped around Yoongi's wrist. Taehyung was strolling behind them, sipping on something through a straw and kicking at pebbles.
"Oh! Look, it's your bunny." Jimin spots you first, pointing his finger at your approach.
"She's not-"
Your face heats, ears dropping as you discreetly try to hide behind Namjoon's broad frame, missing the flushing of Yoongi's cheeks and Taehyung tugging hard on Jimin's tail.
"Ow!" Jimin smacks Taehyung's hand, equally as hard, "The hell you do that for?"
There was a hiss beneath his words, and Hoseok was already laughing, tugging you gently from behind Namjoon. Yoongi, Jimin and Taehyung pass you by, the latter two bickering all the way, Jimin was cradling his tail as though it'd fallen off, no longer clinging to Yoongi. And Yoongi, not looking at you as he always does, muttering about a headache.
"You're acting like I'm lying he's the one that said it in the first place!"
"Just shut up."
Namjoon was none the wiser, though, you're sure he was just pretending he hadn't seen the trio, still not fond of Yoongi and his friends. Hoseok links his arm with yours, frowning down at you, no doubt, your shift in mood was given away by your scent. But he says nothing, still, trying his best to lighten your mood by making faces at you and strange noises.
Only when you were seated in the cafe, a small place were students come to study or just relax, he confronts you. Sitting next to you while Namjoon was at the counter, fumbling over your orders because Yejin was working today.
Hoseok nudges your shoulder with his and pokes at your side with his long fingers, "You should tell him."
Making a confused sound, you turn your head, watching Namjoon drop his wallet. It's a good thing there's no one behind him. "That he's an idiot? They clearly like eachother.."
"No, not him. Though I agree, it's annoying hearing him go on and on about her and not do anything. But I'm talking about Yoongi." Hoseok was playing with the end of your sweater sleeve, tapping at your wrist softly, "He does look at you, you know. You're just never looking at the right time to see it."
"Hobi..." You sigh, "He doesn't even like me like that."
"So? Tell him anyway. At least get it off your chest. If he doesn't see what he's missing that's his loss. Me and the guys would be right here like always."
Namjoon comes back, balancing a tray with your drinks and some snacks in his hand, face flushed as he sits down. "I could totally die from embarrassment right now." He says lowly, resting his forehead against the cool table with a groan.
Hoseok shakes his head, "How'd I get stuck with two idiots for friends?"
A moment passes, with no talking from any of you, just content within eachother's orbit. Namjoon was furiously texting on his phone, almost knocking over his smoothie twice in the ten minutes you've been there. Your head on Hoseok's shoulder as he hummed, fiddling with the strings of his tie-dyed sweater.
Hoseok's phone vibrates on the table, disturbing the silence, Jungkook's name flashing across the screen.
"What's up?" Hoseok pauses for a moment, and you could hear shouting from Jungkook's side. "Who's fighting?"
Not that you're into drama or anything, but Jungkook was frantic enough to make you, Hoseok and Namjoon leave the warmth of the cafe to see what he was yelling about. Hoseok hadn't given any details, just dragging your confused self and Namjoon behind him and your cup of tea was left cooling on the table.
Sure enough, when you make it back to the school building, there was a gathering crowd at the bottom of the stairs. You could hear Taylor shouting something at someone, but it's hard to see with everyone blocking your way. Jimin was also shouting, and you could clearly hear Seokjin trying to calm everyone down.
"The hell's going on?" Namjoon mutters and Hoseok shrugs.
"Guys!" Jungkook pushes his way through the crowd, jogging over to you, there was a scratch on his cheek and a few buttons on his shirt missing. He looks you over swiftly, "You okay?"
"Yeah? Why wouldn't I be?" You're even more confused now, worried about the cut on Jungkook's cheek, not deep enough for him to take notice of it for himself, but it was bleeding a bit.
"Yoongi's-"
"Say that again, asshole!" Someone - clearly Yoongi - shouts, and the crowd plummets back into pandemonium. You follow Jungkook through the crowd, ignoring Hoseok and Namjoon trying to stop you.
In the centre of it was a mess, Taylor, co-head prefect and upperclassman was holding Yoongi by his arms. And on the other side, Seokjin was trying to hold back a guy you've only seen once or twice in your classes, but you recognize him because he's the same guy Yoongi fought with at the end of the last semester; Cha Hesung.
He was another big cat hybrid - panther, like Yoongi -, one of the richer kids at the academy, one who had a knack for saying that students should stick to the hierarchy. Outdated views on hybrid lifestyle, the different classes shouldn't have any reason to be in the same room together. You can only guess why he and Yoongi are fighting again this time.
"Guys, just calm down. We can work this out like grown-up-" Seokjin's sentence was cut short when Hesung throws his head back against his nose, forcing him to let go. The scent of blood was strong, as Seokjin covers his nose with one hand, blood seeping through his fingers, and trying to grab the back of Hesung's shirt with the other.
Hesung charges across the wide space that Taylor and Seokjin had created, tackling both Yoongi and Taylor to the dirt.
You and Jungkook run towards Seokjin, who was sitting in the dirt, blood staining the sleeve of his shirt crimson.
"Ow ow ow..." He groans, squinting at you and Jungkook, "Why'd you bring her?!" His voice muffled behind his hand and he gets up, trying to shove you and Jungkook out of the circle.
"Come on, Min. I expected better of you. Chasing tail with that bunny girl, really?" That stops you, as well as Seokjin and Jungkook. Hesung was standing over Yoongi, looking down his nose at him, "come on think about it, she ain't worth nothing but a good fu-"
Cinnamon burns your nose, and Yoongi hisses loudly, getting off the ground to land a punch across Hesung's face. Namjoon and Hoseok were suddenly in the middle of it too, with Namjoon taking the task of pulling them off and away from eachother.
"Talk about her like that again and I'll fucking rip you to pieces!" Yoongi was still shouting, fighting against Taehyung and Jimin who was pulling him back.
"I wasn't aware we were running a zoo."
The crowd instantly quiets, parting behind you as Professor Ji walks through. Trailing behind him was Nora, who looked a little frazzled and out of breath as though she's ran a mile to find him, dark hair hanging halfway out the neat ponytail she usually wore.
Professor Ji looks around at the surrounding students, "I'm sure you all have better things to do?" Everyone scrambles, running up the stairs and into the building. "Taylor, take Seokjin to the nurse. The rest of you, office. Now."
Yoongi and Hesung were both sitting in chairs a good enough distance from eachother, Namjoon standing in the space. You sat in a corner, next to Jungkook, and Nora who was fussing with the cut on his cheek. Jimin and Taehyung were both outside, and you know they're listening because you'd spotted the tip of Jimin's ear just under the frame of the glass window in the door. You had no idea what you were doing here, you weren't even involved.
"I thought I told you both I didn't want to see you in my office for this sort of thing?" Professor Ji sits back against his chair, hands clasped atop his desk, eyes narrowed.
Yoongi crosses his arms, eyes glued to a random space before him, jaw tight.
"Who started it this time?" Professor Ji asks calmly, and before Hesung could open his mouth, the professor puts up a hand, "No shouting please, my ears are very sensitive." He levels Hesung with a look that has him sinking back into his seat.
"I wouldn't have punched him if he wasn't talking shit." Yoongi says, scent still spiked, still angry. "Change your backward veiws and we won't have a problem." He glared across the room at Hesung who glares right back.
"Hesung, we had a very lengthy conversation last time, and I'm not going to repeat myself. I'll be calling your father once we're done. The rest of you are free to go."
After it all, both groups converge and decided to head back to the cafe. Yejin allowed you to push two tables together, where you now sat, next to Yoongi, his scent once again, simply coffee, though that could just be the cafe. The atmosphere was light, even with Jimin, Yoongi and Jungkook sporting bruises, and Seokjin leaning his head against Namjoon's shoulder with cotton in his nose. Namjoon, who was making conversation with Taehyung, talking excitedly about something. Jungkook was sharing fries with Nora, giggling like kids at the end of the table near the window.
Hoseok was nudging at your leg with his foot, signalling at Yoongi with his eyes before looking back at his phone.
"Are you okay?" You ask softly, fingers brushing his gently under the table where his hands laid in his lap, and surprisingly, Yoongi didn't pull away. He licks at the cut in his lip, and nods, looking down at your hand, and shly, you pull it away to rest in your own lap.
He sighs, hand reaching over to tug at your wrist, pulling your hand from your pocket to hold in his own. His cheeks flush, and for his sake, you say nothing, but you hide your smile, sipping from your cup of tea.
"That fight was silly, you know that right?" You speak softly for the sake of privacy, even though no one was really paying attention to you both. Except maybe Hoseok, who would glance at you every other second.
"He was talking about..." Yoongi glances at you and looks away swiftly, he blinks a couple times and takes a breath. "He was saying stuff about you that he had no right saying."
"That's sweet of you, thanks. But you could've gotten into a lot of trouble."
"Yeah and I'd do it again if he opens his damn mouth to say shit like that." He finally looks at you and holds your gaze, eyes dropping to just a bit below your nose and you could hear your heart in your ears.
"If you guys are gonna kiss...can you like....not do it in front of my virgin eyes?" Jimin suddenly speaks, though he was smiling, even as Taehyung smacks him and tells him to be quiet. It's only then you notice that everyone was actually paying attention to you both.
"Virgin eyes my ass. Shut up Jimin." Yoongi's cheeks are pink and you chuckle, pressing a kiss to his warm cheek just for him to groan and hide his face in the crook of his arm.
Hoseok does a little happy wiggle in his seat, "Finally."
"That's the last of it right? Cause I swear I'm not typing any of that over." Yoongi says, leaning over you just a little to see your laptop screen, his scent sending your head spinning.
"Yeah.." You squeak out a reply, and Yoongi chuckles, pressing a kiss to your temple. "Let me just finish up and then we can go drop it in."
Yoongi's fingers tap at your chin, "Give me a kiss first."
You easily comply, pressing your lips to his in a chaste kiss, clearly not what he wanted because he held your chin in place with his fingers, "You could do better than that bunny."
Your dorm room door opens before you could kiss him again and Yoongi sighs, "Don't you knock?"
"I totally did." Jungkook says, smiling like a kid on Christmas, "You two were too busy being gross to hear. Come on we're meeting up at the café."
"I'll make it up to you later, babe." You say to Yoongi, grabbing your jacket and tugging him out of your dorm.
