after some faffing about today i've gotten Tavros, Gamzee, and Kanaya's quirks all working just fine. these were a little harder because you can't just find and replace characters, which is how I've been doing it so far - you have to flip through the string and check what actually needs capitalising.

We've found a couple different examples for this sorta thing, one used character arrays and another used string builders - i'm not sure if one is better than the other? This kinda thing often bugs us a lot - we like to do things the "proper" way, but frankly, for what this is (a silly little baby's first java project) it literally doesn't Fucking matter. Maybe we'll get good enough to give a damn at some point? but for the time being, especially for something that no one Else is going to use, it's pretty inconsequential.

That said! we've got everyone from Aradia through to Terezi done now. Just over half way through! Isn't that neat!

u stop in front of where eddie is sitting as your boyfriend stands, thanking you for the water and chugging it down, wiping his mouth off and setting it back down on the coffee table as you giggle airily, confused.

tommy moves foward.

Geto/Reader - Insula pt 1: Introductions

The geto/reader fic I've been talkin about is finally here ahhh 🎉🎉 I didn't think I'd ever end up posting it tbh so I'm happy I finally got this first chapter done.

This is gunna be a 21 part thing so buckle up i guess. This 1st part is reader meeting her fellow first years.

You blink blearily as your eyes shift in and out of focus as you stare at the wooden door in front of you. Rubbing the sleep out of your eyes and fighting back a yawn you can’t help but wonder if it was too late for you to bail.

Having to be up so early had you thinkin that perhaps you weren’t cut out for the whole sorcerer gig. How mad would mama be if she got a call from you now talkin bout how you were on the first flight back home? You don’t remember the time zone conversions off the top of your head and your brain is still too foggy to even begin trying to figure out what time it was for your mom right now. Too late or too early - either way, you knew if you called she’d be raisin hell and your name would be on a shirt by the time you cleared the baggage claim.

If you wanted to live to see 17, it looks like fighting creepy cursed spirits and dealing with weirdo sorcerers was gunna be your safest bet. And ain’t that some shit?

Your eyes travel along the pattern of the wood grain, committing it to memory. You trace over every curve and indentation as you buy yourself some time between now and when you have to step through the doorway. Even if it's just another moment or two.

There’s a nasty knotting feeling that’s settled in the pit of your stomach at the thought of what might be waitin for you on the other side. As painful as it is to admit to yourself it's undeniable at this point. You're nervous. It’s the only bit of information your brain is able to translate at this point.

You can already feel the cursed energy of the two other people beyond the door. Two distinct energies sitting close together and if you listened hard enough, you may have been able to make out bits and pieces of the conversation that they were having.

It was stupid. You were being stupid. You shouldn't be gettin this worked up over meeting a couple of strangers. You’ve met plenty of strangers in your, relatively, short life and it’d never been anything that had you stressin as much as you were now. Meeting the two boys you’d been told would be your classmates shouldn’t have been any different. At least that’s what you kept telling yourself.

It had been a few years since you’d been around people your own age for an extended amount of time and the last time you were it didn’t end very well. Between your mom and immigrating, you’d been unintentionally isolated for the past several years. Your curse technique was a fickle thing, especially when you were younger. Your mom had been so worried that you’d accidentally activate it around others so instead of spending time with your peers in school or going on play-dates you’d been stuck between dusty library shelves with your mother trying to track down any possible information that could make the technique easier to control. You’d complained to her on more than one occasion about having to learn all of the words and theories that would leave your head spinning. You could hardly pronounce them - let alone understand them.

People were more complicated than any of that though. You’re mama had warned you but experience had ultimately been the best teacher for that lesson.

And unlike the others from before the two people beyond the door were going to be constants whether you fucked things up or not. They’d be your classmates for the next three years of your life.

The two people behind the door in the classroom that you’re struggling to build up the courage to enter will be constants for, presumably, the next three years of your life. The thought is enough to cause your stomach to do that uncomfortable flipping you’d been trying to prevent.

A small, pathetic, part of you hoped things would go right this time.

You take a deep breath. There’s no such thing as a halfway crook and you’d made up your mind many months ago that this is where you wanted, no needed, to be. There’s no sense in turnin tail and running after you’d worked so hard to be able to be here to begin with.

You do your best to settle your rattled nerves, despite thinking of every nightmarish way this first interaction could play out, and slide the door open.

Unfortunately, in your eagerness to power through your internal turmoil you slid the door open a little too hard and the loud thunk of the wood caught the attention of the room's occupants.

One whipped his head around with a speed that almost had you concerned he’d given himself whiplash. He had dark hair and wide, bright eyes that crinkled a little at the corners as he met your stare with a broad smile. It was the brightest smile you think you’d ever seen and it matched the signature to his cursed energy. It was a steady and strong thrum with a delicate warmth about it that practically rolled off the boy in waves.

The other, a blonde boy made up of all sharp features, merely glanced your way with a furrow of his brow. You guessed the brunette had been talkin his ear off before and your loud entrance wasn’t really endearing him to either of y’all. But damn. He looked like he had nothin to smile about in his life. He was dead behind the eyes too - you're not sure if it was a sleep deprivation thing or just his general expression. His energy, unsurprisingly, was much more subtle than his counterpart. It was something soft - like a cool breeze.

You offered a mumbled apology for your loud entrance as you closed the door behind you and made your way over to your new classmates. You felt stiff and hoped your movements didn’t look as robotic as they felt.

“I didn’t know we were having a foreigner as a classmate," the brunette was practically vibrating with excitement as he jumped off of the where he was perched on the others desk - ignoring the blonde’s indignant muttering as he nearly sent the entire desk tumbling to the ground with his momentum. You couldn’t decide if his eagerness was endearing or off putting just yet, "I thought there weren’t any curse-users outside of Japan. Where’re you from? You’re a westerner, right?” The words came in rapid fire succession as if he’d been afraid he wouldn’t be able to get it all out quick enough. It nearly made your head spin.

You offered a timid smile - unsure of how to go about answering him. You hadn’t been in Japan for no more than a month but it looked like being a foreigner was going to bring about more attention than you were usually comfortable with. Nobody had been bad about it, but the stares you got from time to time would make you itch. Foreigners made up such a small portion of the population here and with your skin being a golden brown instead of the paler tones they were accustomed to you guess it was to be expected.

“Have some tact," the blonde grumbled after righting the desk, "you sound ignorant. Of course there’s curse-users and sorcerers outside of Japan, it’s just not as common.” His hair spoke to his own foreign background somewhere in his family tree. You wondered if he had to get used to stares and questions too.

You give a small hum in agreement. “There ain’t many of us back home and it just seemed like a better opportunity to learn in the thick of things,” you offer in explanation as you take the seat next to the blonde.

Japan was the epicenter of the sorcerer society you’d found yourself in after all. The Japanese sect had more resources and time to spend on developing curse users than whatever was left of the sect back home. You’d never been too heavily involved in sorcerer society back then - your mother had done her damndest to keep it that way - but you’d overheard enough whispered conversations about cursed spirits popping up left, right, and center and how overwhelmed things were becoming. It’s why the Japanese sorcerers had been called in to assist and how you’d come across the one who had scouted you. It was just your luck that he’d been able to sponsor you and get you into the Tokyo prefectural jujutsu high school.

You just weren't too sure yet if it was good luck or bad luck. You'd always seemed to have more of the latter.

You introduce yourself to the boys with a small bow of your head. “Please take care of me.” It’s not as formal of an introduction by Japanese standards that you'd been taught to give but seeing as how neither had offered their own names first you decided it would have to do.

Apparently formalities didn't matter all that much to these two.

“Soto, huh? Your Japanese is pretty good for a foreigner! If I closed my eyes I probably wouldn’t have even guessed you were the one speaking!” the brunette practically beamed and you had to fight down a small heat that started to warm your cheeks at the unexpected compliment. It had been a bit of a rush to learn the language and you imagine the lessons you got from your recruiter hadn’t been very by the book, “I’m Haibara Yu. How long have you been here? We should go do some touristy stuff if you haven’t been able to yet!”

You hadn’t been expecting their friendliness right off the bat but the boy’s smile seems to come to him as easily as breathing and he seems so painfully sincere in everything that he says. You can’t help the smile that tugs at the corners of your mouth. You go to respond but are quickly cut off by the blonde.

“Idiot, we’re not here to go sightseeing,” You’re not sure if the muscles in the blonde’s face knew how to do anything other than frown at this point.

“Don’t be such a buzzkill,” Haibara wrinkled his nose and brushed off the other boy’s annoyance with a childish pout, “we can have fun in between exorcising curses and training. Just cuz we’re here doesn’t mean we can’t live a little - you still need to introduce yourself too!”

There was a beat of silence as the blonde eyed the two of you as if he was thinkin on something and couldn’t quite come to a decision. With a tired sigh he responded. “Nanami Kento,” it sounded strained, as if the words physically pained him to say, “let's just focus on surviving the year first before we worry about anything else.”

You can’t help but raise a brow in response as your eyes slide over to meet Haibara's and you both share a look of understanding.

The Nanami kid is definitely a buzzkill.

I actually have up to chapter 3 finished tbh - just doin some more edits. This chapter was going to be longer but i decided to just absorb the last bit into the next one cuz it'll flow better imo. Next one will be longer as an apology

Anyways, Soto's dialect and the way i'll be havin folks talk are gunna be very intentional choices based on their backgrounds.

Nanami is a lil bitchy here too & we aint get to see much of him or reader's impression - don't worry he'll have more time to shine next chapter. Remember this takes place before anything we see of nanami in the manga - the relationship is gunna develop.

🎸 Favorite Stage Theme?

In all seriousness, this person right here is extremely partial to Hard Times Act 1, what can I say, I'm a simple guy :P

Though, to be honest, something about the Buxer tracks is so... well constructed, even in comparison to the rest of S3K's already top tier OST. Of course the song itself is from the 80's, but the way it was translated to Genesis, the choices in instruments, those crunchy samples taking over the least amount of cartridge space possible in the game's already gargantuan size. Flying Battery and Death Egg are beautiful tracks, but something about the way they got IceCap working still amazes.

As for 3D Sonic, lately I've been feeling Skyscraper Scamper Night a lot. It's the kind of song I think of when I'm about to stream and I have to pick a Sonic song to play from my almost 500 track playlist. I fucking hate Skyscraper Scamper Act 1 with a burning passion, but you can never be mad at Kumatani's music :P

🎤 Favorite Vocal Track?

Every Sonic Frontiers boss, oh, and One Way Dream.

I cannot possibly understate just how much this OST changed my life. This wasn't my first rodeo, I've been here for years and I've spent a lot of my time listening to Sonic OSTs both new and old. When Forces came out, I celebrated the fact vocal songs were back, and I wanted more. I love Sonic vocal songs, and for a long time With Me was my go-to vocal song. But holy fuck these tracks blew me away.

My expectations were surpassed. Final boss-tier songs playing every four hours or so, and probably my favorite credits theme ever in this franchise. It felt like playing through the final battles of Sonic Adventure 2, Heroes and Black Knight over and over again, all in one game. The bar was set very high before this game, and now it's even higher.

And, of course, I picked Find Your Flame as my absolute favorite. I think it perfectly represents Sonic as a whole. Confident, fighting to the very end for his mission, sticking by his friends, very high energy, very powerful and, in the end, a moment to calm down and reflect on the best things in life, that flame that keeps him going.

🎧 Favorite overall soundtrack?

Sonic Unleashed. It and CD are still at the top, but Sonic Frontiers came very close to stealing that, too. The thing I still love about Unleashed's OST is the overall variety, it's so well-rounded and high quality, aged just as beatifully as the game itself. Also, I live for jazzy Sonic tunes, they always hit different.

I see you mentioning KnuxAmy here and there, and I'm a bit guilty of not talking about that underrated ship more. Low-key it's still one of my favorites :P (One day I'll finish that Angel Island fic, maybe)

They have been so beloved globally from day one (and even before day one) but they still don't have that in their own country. It's insane! I'm glad they've embraced the 'global idol' title though. Everytime i hear it in an interview intro I'm like 'at least Korea knows they're truly loved elsewhere'. But the way they do sooooo much for K-tiny and still can't get the traction. It's crazy. No one is doing more.

Guerilla is such a good MV! What a great introduction! And it sounds so cool~ I really love that their songs span genres. I feel like there must be four or five different styles in Halazia alone. (Also, I agree. I'm typically not into summery, softer songs or slower ballads. But I actively listen to all of Ateez's songs. In fact, some of my consistent faves fit right into this category!)

Their story/lore is incredible. Sometimes I feel like I understand everything less than most of the members (😂) but I'm alllll about it! It's so cool that they have this one arc. That it's been the same story this whole time. Truly amazing. Concept kings. I'm gonna need a film one day. It's all so cinematic and intriguing.

Ateez, Stray Kids, and Taemin is an AMAZING (and very tempting) line up. But you should definitely hold out. Because then you get to see Ateez for 3 hours and that's 🥰🥺. And you know they actually know what a 'world tours' is. So, it's just a waiting game!

Yessss, I did see the stats! They're grown so much, even in six months. And the first day sales looked amazing! I've been streaming on Spotify and having a great old time. Anyways, yeah the cupsleeve was so nice. I'm lucky to live on one side of a pair of decently sized cities with a diverse population here, so we get a handful of nice events (one of the local gay bars hosts a kpop night monthly, for example).

I've been to a cupsleeve for Taemin, Stray Kids, and then I helped my friend host one for OnlyOneOf - they were all really fun but did not even begin to prepare me for the intensity of the Ateez one. I was baffled; the Skz one was held at the same location and it was a graveyard by comparison. I didn't take many pictures bc I was caught up chatting and there was no way to take them without a ton of people in the photo lol - but these are the few from the event;

I agree with you, regarding the global idol title; I think it's really well deserved and is serving them well. They really deserve more notice in KR though; it sucks that they get overlooked just bc of not being a Big 4; if anything people should pay more attention since those are the hidden gems, you know?

Bouncy has a kpop sort of vibe to it though, moreso than some of the other title tracks of theirs I've heard, so hopefully folks pay a little more attention this time around. I heard they got their first win for Bouncy this morning though! So that's something positive.

Halazia was unbelievable; I was impressed when I heard it and even moreso when I saw the m/v. I finally sat down and listened to their entire discography this weekend while doing cleaning and realized I genuinely can't find a skip song with them for the most part. 😭

Also yes!! 100% on a movie - this would make an amazing full length film or hell, even a miniseries; it's such a complex and well written storyline. I'm mad I didn't pick up the diary version of Outlaw bc I need to know what happens next. (I have all 3 versions coming but they won't be here for a while bc they're being sent with my albums from SHINee's comeback at the end of June; I could only afford one of their albums from the store here bc they were so much more expensive than they are in the KR shop I use. >.<)

Seeing the way atiny treat the group and each other and work together is so heartwarming. It's interesting, to have it be largely on the international fans' shoulders to push them to the spotlight in both the wider world and KR; but the teamwork is super fun to see. I haven't been this actively involved in a kpop fandom since I quit doing it for my og group (just stuck mostly to the sidelines, reblogging pretty pictures, etc for my other groups) - but I'm enjoying it so much more so far; I don't feel the same kind of guilty pressure that I've felt elsewhere.

They have so much content too holy - I've been trying to catch up and I feel like I haven't even scraped the surface yet lol - Every time I think I've managed to finish one section I realize there's x or y other things I missed lol. I did not even know the Treasure Film series existed until you mentioned it 😂 - but it looks like M2 did it; I love the games/variety type shows that company has done, so I'm eager to watch it! Also Woosan. Bless those two. They are so dumb. I love them so much. I would like to point out, that I did not want them. I specifically pointed out San to my friend when we watched Guerrilla and said "anyone but that one". (He startled me by resembling someone in an unsettling way when I first glanced at him and I didn't like it lol - he doesn't resemble said person now that I recognize them all tho thankfully).

But I apparently had no say in him, since he was the one that kept sticking out in everything and his personality is exactly what I gravitate to in a bias (the big oaf with a loud mouth and a heart of gold, always a little confused but he's got the spirit, scary duality) -- normally I do find a second bias within a few months that vibes with my first, but I didn't even get a say in that since not only did San tell me 'no, I'm right here and you're going to pay attention to me', he did it while dragging that scrappy little devil along by the hand V_V I couldn't just adopt him without Woo. (I was quite disgruntled about that one too - I don't bias visuals or dancers dammit - I have avoided them in most of my groups so far.

Plus! Where's my rapper bias??? I thought I'd add HJ as my second but nope, instead I get the 'friends as far as the altar' Tom and Jerry pair and 6 bias wreckers since none of them can stay in their damn lane for more than a few minutes at a time. 😂 (My friend said that'd happen tho so I can't say I wasn't warned).

"Do I look like I'm kidding?" I questioned unbothered, not quite understanding the concern in my friends' faces.

"You sound like you're kidding!" My best friend Linda looked around in fear before leaning across the lunch table. "Y/n. Eddie Munson? Are you serious?" She whispered in distress.

After years of being meticulously held at bay by my parents, and with the end of my highschool experience on the horizon, I had resumed it was time to rebel, straying from my straight A, good girl path.

Since my parents would definitely not yield to my pleas of flying free by fair means, the only way they had left me was by foul.

That's how I found myself explaining to my group of close friends what devious plan my mind had devised.

"Well I mean— he's not that bad, y'know?" Liz, who sat at the front of the table, spoke, lazily playing with the food on her plate. "I tutor him in math, he's... actually kinda nice. Horrible student, though."

"Bet Ted Bundy was 'actually kinda nice'." The quieter of us four finally spoke his mind about my idea, accompanying his sentence with quotation marks.

"George!" I widened my eyes at his deadpan expression, to which he shrugged.

"What? We're just tryna knock some common sense into you."

"I— well— Okay— Listen! I don't need 'common sense'," I hissed through gritted teeth. "I need my parents to get off my back!"

"Why don't you go for, I don't know, Carver?" Liz suggested. "I feel like your dad would be just as mad."

I twisted my face with apprehension, sparing a side eye to the basketball team's captain. "I don't like him."

"But you like Eddie Munson?" Linda inquired, incredulous.

"I didn't say that."

"You're implying it." George pointed out with squinted, suspecting eyes.

"I don't like him!" I groaned, slamming my fist on our table. George raised his hands in defeat, straightening himself on the spot. "All I know is that he's a scary guy, older than me, with long hair," I started counting with my fingers in front of my friends "he drinks, he smokes—"

"He sells drugs."

"He sells drugs— good point." I agreed, pointing at a very much alarmed Linda. "Plays in a weird band, and is part of a cult or something."

"Jesus Christ, Y/n."

"Plus, by what Lizzy says, he's not that much of a bad guy, so we know he won't— I don't know— take me to his van, kill me and chop my corpse off into little chunks."

"Do we?" George hesitance did nothing but annoy me, but I understood my friend's point.

"Believe me," Liz chucked softly raising her brows without looking up from her plate. "We do."

"The whole point is to give my parents a heart attack, and they despise everything Eddie Munson stands for." I leaned back on my chair, finishing my explanation. "It's perfect."

"It's nonsense, that's what it is." George countered. "You're out of your mind, Y/n."

"Would you look at that? my parents finally managed to drive me crazy." I nonchalantly stated, looking around the cafeteria in search of a particular student. "There he is."

"Who?" Linda tracked my line of vision with a puzzled gaze.

"Munson." Liz clarified, taking a peek over George's shoulder, and therefore missing my movements until I was up. "Hey, where you going?"

"To get the ball rolling." I checked my wristwatch, taking a hold of my backpack before throwing one of the straps over my shoulder.

"Oh God." Linda's words came out muffled, as her face was hidden behind her palms.

"Y/n, wait—" While I circled our table, George had gotten up, and now stood in my way. "Don't take this the wrong way but... Ugh—"

"But?" I prompted him to speak, very much aware that the lunch break was coming to an end, which meant that I was running out of time.

"You haven't asked out anyone in your life," my friend halfheartedly muttered. "and you're gonna start with Eddie Munson?"

I froze as George's words sunk in. With a deep breath, and taking another look at the pariahs' table, I shook off my insecurities in favor of taking my freedom back.

"Go big or go home, Georgie." I dedicated the boy a smile and, with a pat on his chest, I moved him aside and resumed my walk.

He hadn't slept in almost three weeks. The constant thought of you was the only thing that ran through his mind. The way your hair fell so naturally, how your laugh would basically echo throughout the server, the way you could handle anything that came your way.

Most of all he thought about those nights. The ones when the two of you had been so close he could feel your warmth. You had once stared into his eyes with so much fire and had held him close.

"My sweetness! Where are you going to be tonight?" He passed an apple between his hands, leaning against your door.

"I happen to have some very important business to do with Puffy and Niki. But after that, I should be free, why?" You packed everything into your inventory.

He shrugged, giving a crooked smile, "I thought maybe we could hang out, I could take you around the server...show you the secrets I've found."

You had grinned at the proposition. Dream and you always found a way to get into trouble, Sam usually had to tell you two off.

"I would love to."

That night after causing a few explosions near the BadLands and stealing some materials from a few places around the server you both made your way back to Dreams house. Well, 'house' was an overstatement. It was more of a hole in the side of the mountain with a door than anything but at least it was a place for him to stay.

The cigarette you two passed back and forth went out, and you two found yourself swaying back and forth to the music, enjoying the nightlight. Jokes and topics floated in the air until you packed up your stuff to leave.

Now? Things had changed so much compared to the beginning of the server. Dream had always been some pretty boy that had enjoyed your attention. You loved him as a friend, he could never be anything more as much as you knew he wanted.

In his mind, though you had led him on. Pulled him around like some puppy that couldn't guide itself. It had started slowly. You couldn't hang out one day, and the destruction got worse and worse each time.

"Hey, Niki! I was wondering if you've heard from Y/N. They're not answering my calls and I'm a little worried."

"Oh yeah um they had something to do today, so they're just out and about haha." She lied. He knew because he showed up at your house and found you scuffling about, making dinner, and enjoying a show.

He had gone home that night wondering what he did wrong to make you ignore him.

It wasn't long after that things had started escalating. Him showing up more and more and then seemingly disappearing. Or so you had thought.

It was supposed to be an easy-going day, you and Fundy planned to go looking for some new places to explore and then walk around the server. Until he had shown up. You saw him out of the corner of your eyes, the mask giving away his location.

"Dream?" He had tried to stay hidden but came out once you approached the tree he was behind.

"Dream? What are you doing here?"

"You were ignoring me. I thought maybe you were mad."

"What? No, I've just been busy lately."

"Doing what, hanging out with him?" The look he gave Fundy turned your stomach upside down. It was filled with rage, jealousy.

"Dream I think you need to leave."

"What?" He whispered.

"Leave. Please."

And so he did. For that day.

These last few days the feelings in his head had been taking over, pushing him to do something, anything to get you back and keep you.

"Y/N! Please just let me explain myself! Please!" You stopped dead in your tracks and turned to face him.

"What Dream? What could possibly so important that you need to tell me right now?"

"Why have you been ignoring me? You won't answer your calls and you never answer the door. Niki and Puffy have started asking me to leave you alone...I just need to know what I did wrong."

"You cannot be serious right now. You want to know what you did wrong? How about terrorizing Fundy so badly he won't get anywhere near me? Or calling me more than a hundred times a day? Leave me alone. I don't want anything to do with you and I don't need anything from you ever again! So god help me if I ever see you again I will leave and never come back!"

Your words left him cold. Every inch of him just lost.

You began walking away but you didn't make it far before the handle of the ax was brought down on your head. You fell to the ground, unconscious.

He stared down at you, admiring the way the moonlight hit you. The deja vu of that night in his home hit hard. Oh, how different things had been. And how much had changed?

Random thoughts about the characters of Love All Play.

The names of the leads (Park Taeyang and Park Taejun) really have sibling vibes. Calling them Twins was perfect. But I think in every universe, ParkPark couple is the best, lol!

Junghwan is cute, but an asshole. He has a soft side sometimes, but it's not enough to balance his negative side. The way he treats Taeyang like she can't do anything right makes my eyes roll so much. He doesn't want her to stay, yet he got mad at her for wanting to leave. Maybe it would've been understandable if he was Taeyang's love interest, but he's not. He's not even her friend. He's just a nobody in her life who treats her like shit. Yes, he's still not over his first love, and yes it's partly Taryang's fault that they broke up. But still, he should just pick a side and stick with it. If he can't forgive her, he should've just shut his mouth and let her leave. Telling her off for wanting to get fired when he can't stand her presence just makes him a POS. Regarding his lovelife, I'm annoyed with Yumin for pushing herself at him. But I'm also annoyed with him for being wishy washy with his feelings. One moment he's acting like he wants to be Yumin's bf, the next he's acting like Junyoung is the love of his life. He keeps giving mixed signal to Yumin. The same with Taeyang. I wish he'd end up with Junyoung because they're both toxic.

Yumin actress is also cute, she looks a bit like the Junyoung actress. Like they were chosen to be Junghwan's love interests because he has a type, and they're of the same type. But her character is annoying. She's a stalker of Junghwan, tbh. And she keeps meddling on other people's business. I wish she'd back off of Junghwan and continue with her blind dates offscreen. I want to skip their scenes tbh. Though I find both actors cute, their combined cuteness is not enough to offset the negative feelings that I have for their characters.

Junyoung actress is so pretty. I saw her on Yumi's Cells before. Her character Saeyi was also antagonistic. I haven't seen her other works so I don't know if she got typecasted as a mean girl. She reminds me of Yoon Park, who is also good looking, but who also plays asshole roles. Like they're both too good looking to be good, lol. Anyway, the more I see Junyoung, the more I hate her character. Yes it's Taeyang's fault for taking her to an empty ski track, for bringing cans of beer, for crashing on her and causing her injuries. But Taeyang didn't ask her to lie. She lied by herself, saying she got injured practicing alone. And as shown in the earlier episodes, Taeyang can't just refute it because the truth would ruin Junyoung's image (which happened when the truth came out). I think she also lied to cover her ass more than to protect Taeyang. She's used to getting all the love and admiration, and she can't stand it when someone else succeeds. She took for granted that her brother was left out a lot because their parents' attention is always on her, her loyal bf became a royal pain in the butt and a troublemaker because of her, and she's hurting her brother without feeling guilty or sorry. But tbh, I still don't mind watching her, lol. I don't have the urge to fastforward her scenes. Maybe it's because I like her face more than I hate her character, lol. There's a saying in my country that you should behave the way you look. It's like saying beautiful people can act however they want. But if you're ugly, you better be good. It's easier to forgive the beautiful ones than uglies. Sad but true.

Junyoung and Taejun's parents. They should've stopped having another child after Junyoung. They act like they only have one child, Taejun is not even a spare that they gave attention to when their Junyoung was gone. They're not really bad people, but they don't deserve Taejun. I can't wait for them to realize how much they damaged Taejun emotionally. Yes it's true, parents play favorites. But it's really sad when both parents have the same favorite.

The sunbae couple, Seungwoo and Youngsim. They're like the mom friend/dad friend of the group. The mom's a nagger and super strict, while the dad is super chill. But they both love their team mates (and each other, lol). I can't wait for dad friend to confess to mom friend, lol! I wish they gave them more screentime than the second couple/love triangle.

The hoobae couple Seungsil and Jiho. They're both cutiepies. I saw the actress previously in Our Beloved Summer. She was more mature there. Here, she feels much younger and more fun. I can feel the difference in the characters she play which imho, makes her a good actress. I mean, some actors feel like they're playing the same role in different AUs, lol (hello Kit Harington! Sorry, I love Kit, but all I can see is Jon Snow even when he's playing a different character). I wish to see her in more dramas so I can compare. Anyway, the lovebirds are mostly for comic relief that's why I would rather watch more of them than the second leads. They're my 3rd favorite couple.

The three stooges.. the coaching team. They're hilarious! I mean, mostly. I still can't stop laughing at their drinking session when the head coach blurted that he's the only one sober. They're sometimes spineless, sometimes bully, sometimes annoying, sometimes sweet, sometimes vengeful, sometimes kindhearted, and mostly funny.

Taeyang. I saw the actress before in Extracurricular where she plays a tough, streetsmart girl, so I was expecting Taeyang to kick some ass. Well, she was. But, then she grew softer and softer and softer. And now she's a mush. I thought she'd be a fighter like Heedo of 25 21, and she was at first. She powered through her detractors, she didn't quit when the group was ganging up on her. And she was even supporting and inspiring Taejun. Then Junyoung appeared and her character just changed to spineless, self sacrificing, aimless idiot. She's throwing her dreams and her love away. Her character took a nosedive and went down the drain. I feel bad for the actress. It must be exhausting to play the character. The last few episodes, her eyes are puffy even when she's not crying, like maybe they just finished shooting some more crying scenes. I hope episode 12 is the lowest of low. She better start fighting back or I'm gonna riot.

Taejun. I remember seeing the actor in Hot Stove League, where he played the role of a rookie who's experiencing yips. Tbh, at first I was hoping that the lead was Junghwan actor because I find him cute. This actor looks a bit like Seunggi, (a less cute version lol, sorry..). It took me a while to warm up to his character, but oh boy. I never thought that he'd become my favorite. By episode 12, I wanna fight his family and adopt him, lol! My baby needs a big hug. If there's a cinnamon roll in this series, it's him. Yes, Taeyang is like the punching bag right now, all she does is cry and give in and swallow her pride. But honestly, I feel like she can take the punches. She can survive not being in the team, she can survive not having friends, she can survive not having a family, she can survive not having Taejun (I mean she already did it for 3 years). Taejun is there for her and trying to protect her, but I feel like Taejun is more fragile. Taeyang is both his strength and his weakness. With her, he can do anything, even defy his family. Without her, he'd be back to his old aimless self. I feel like he'd take the breakup harder than her. He did say he can't make it without her. But maybe I'm wrong, let's wait for episode 13.

I haven't read ACOSF yet, and tbh I'm rather rusty with the characters but it was really interesting to read your opinion on Elain! I feel there's a lot of complexity to her. And how she presents herself as well because as you said we literally have no chapters from hers or Lucien's POV and I think that's the important point to note because right now we're all just guessing and assuming her to be like Feyre, but she's not. People deal/show their traumas in different way and l think people expect Elain to deal with it as Feyre did. But, Feyres trauma and Elains are very different!

I don't really know what I'm saying. But I read your answer and it made me go 'oh... Huh!' in a good way, it sparked my curiosity! So thank you! But I think Elain perhaps is the most complex person with their trauma. I know people say 'oh Nesta is so different' but (I specialised in drama therapy so I love psycho analysis) and what Nesta did is self destructive to prevent relationships to avoid hurt or more emotions that she doesn't want to acknowledge (in my opinion!)

Elain just shuts down. She doesn't drink, she doesn't screw, she just remains in her garden which in itself says a lot! That's a very grounding way to handle trauma and not a lot of people are aware of that side!

So yeah I don't know what I'm saying but I think it's a really interesting discussion!

I have so many thoughts about Elain! This took me a few days to get to because i knew I had a crapton of thoughts. So this is basically me using this ask to explain the way I see Elain post-acosf!

There are three important scenes in acosf off the top of my head: when Elain talks with Nesta and they fight, and then with Nesta and Feyre and she gets mad and leaves, and then Feyre and Rhys talk about her in their chapter. We’re getting a lot more information about her, and for me, it wasn’t so much about who she is, but why we don’t know who she is.

So far, what we’ve had is Feyre’s and Nesta’s POV. Even when Feyre and Lucien tried to help her in acowar, they were unable. So we’ve never had anything about Elain from someone who didn’t grow up with her and experience the same trauma (such as becoming destitute, their mother’s death, their father being beaten, the Cauldron, etc.)

The sisters do handle it very, very differently. And I think that at this point the fandom consensus is that Elain runs away from her problems, but I actually disagree, and partly because of what you mentioned - that she isn’t using those self-harming, destructive coping mechanisms. Nesta was avoiding her problems, hardcore. It’s absolutely possible that Elain avoids things, but I don’t think that she just runs from all of her problems because:

Elain grieves her father. Openly. She tries to accept the fact that it wasn’t her fault and that she couldn’t do anything about it. (See: her going to his grave in acofas, her first talk with Nesta in acosf.) Elain does not run from her grief, she doesn’t pretend it doesn’t exist, and she doesn’t hide it from others. As one of the most defining events we’ve seen her go through in the series, that’s a pretty big deal.

Elain does not cling to unhealthy coping mechanisms. There could be ways that she does this that we are unaware of. She does seem like the type who would be really, really good at making people think she’s okay, all while she’s silently imploding. But we don’t know that yet?

Elain does not isolate herself. 

However, Elain definitely needs to deal with some stuff! She definitely needs to deal with Lucien, and she needs to have an actual talk with Nesta because I don’t remember a single satisfying resolution between those two in acosf. Not like Nesta had with Feyre. 

I have this idea that is purely based on Elain’s line in acosf:

“I went into the Cauldron, too, you know. And it captured me. And yet somehow, all you think of is what my trauma did to you.” (pg. 233)

And then Feyre tells Nesta that yes, Elain was right. 

This is so so so sossosososos important. I cannot emphasize it enough. Elain is used to putting on a fake, smiling face because she doesn’t want the weight of her sisters’ concern. She has been pretending to cope for so long - and tbf, she seems to have been doing better than Nesta - that people not only forget that she has suffered, but she doesn’t feel like she can even express that suffering.

Emotional labor often means negating one’s own feelings in order to acknowledge or tend to someone else’s. And that is Elain’s major role, in the series. Feyre has been caring for everyone’s physical wellbeing (hunting), while Elain’s role has been to care for everyone’s emotional wellbeing. But, like with most emotional labor, it has gone unnoticed.

I’ve made posts about emotional labor in the past (four years ago!!!!) but I’m gonna spare you the link because a lot of it was about a ship that’s no longer a ship, so here is the relevant content:

What I am talking about is the regulation of emotion - any time that you give comfort, are especially attentive to someone’s needs, stop thinking about how you feel in order to focus on how someone else feels, try to cheer someone up, make sure that they are taking care of themselves, try to allay their insecurities, etc. Basically, helping them with any sort of emotional distress.

You know those posts you’ve seen, about women protecting men’s egos constantly? Or about making time for self-care? Or about recognizing toxic relationships? That tell you “if X is being demanded of you in a relationship, get out”? Those are ALL about emotional labor, broadly speaking. They are warning you not to do more than you can handle, more than you need to do, because it can be harmful to you.

If you have ever been expected to make a person or people feel better any time you are around each other (including when they are angry, upset, anxious, ill, frustrated, insecure, etc.), you have performed emotional labor. Pretty much everyone has done this at some point, unless you are a completely insensitive jerk.

Notice, though, that I said expected to and any time you are around them – this is where the problem comes in for YOU. This is not about just being there for a friend.

Making loved ones feel better is fantastic. Seeing people be polite and kind to one another makes my heart shine. That is not a problem in and of itself. That can be seen as emotional labor, but there are no requirements on you in those circumstances. This is something you are doing of your own free will.

The problem, again, is when this is expected, constantly, over time. Now, in my experience, the expectation is not necessarily coming from the other person. One of the problems with this type of labor is that not only do others expect women to perform these tasks, but women expect it of themselves.

It’s super easy to see this – who is expected to take care of a child when they fall? Who is expected to baby-sit? Who did you want when you were sick as a child, mom or dad? Who is expected to be sensitive and pay attention to others’ emotions?

For more info on this idea specifically, read Of Woman Born by Adrienne Rich. As a woman, I realized how much work I had been performing and how much it was harming me and I just… got real upset. She comes at this mostly from what a woman’s role is expected to be within the family, and might actually be a bit outdated in that respect because I feel like family structures and dynamics are shifting (that is a totally un-academic evaluation of the situation, don’t quote me on that), but still, it’s really informative.

While I was doing some research for this post I came across a peer-reviewed article about nursing and basically, high amounts of emotional labor led to anxiety and burn-out in those performing it. It literally will cost your mental health – not to mention your time, energy, attention, and it often requires you to ignore your own needs (this last part came from me, not the article). On the other hand, high levels of emotional intelligence (being able to recognize your own and others’ emotional states) meant less emotional labor (and therefore less anxiety & burn-out). One of the most important things to realize is that while you are taking care of someone else’s emotional needs, your own are frequently unmet. That is why it’s important to recognize this in yourself, not just in these characters.

So where does Elain fit in? Elain is the #1 emotional labor provider of the family, and she is about to freaking SNAP. I know, because once I realized how my trauma was hidden in order to spare someone else its consequences, I fucking SNAPPEd. I’ll also spare you the personal details, but Elain hasn’t been “okay”. She hasn’t been “boring”, or “nice”, or “chosen” Feyre over Nesta. She has literally been unable to express herself because (and I am NOT blaming Nesta or Feyre or her father one bit) her family’s emotional state has been so fragile, there hasn’t been room for Elain to feel or express her emotions in years. 

In the feysand short, Rhys says:

I wonder if everyone has spent so long assuming Elain is sweet and innocent that she felt she had to be that way or else she’d disappoint you all.

And that completely tracks. Everyone has gotten used to Elain being not just “nice”, but being the emotionally predictable one. The one they know they can go to for a smile. The one they can count on for never, ever making them realize that she has been through Some Shit Too. And being that person is exhausting.

When Feyre thinks about Elain not using Lucien’s gloves, 1) she still has them, otherwise she couldn’t think about Elain not using them, and 2) I like to see the gloves as something that she will come to use, once she realizes that she can feel and express those emotions without it causing a breakdown in the family. Right now, she just wants to feel. And she can’t do that emotionally, so she’s doing it physically. Once she heals and finds a better balance, she won’t need to resort to physical pain. (Which, lowkey has me thinking some other thoughts, but.... maybe later.) But anyway, once Elain does go through her very own special journey, I fully expect her to welcome those gloves. She won’t need physical pain to feel anymore.

Not to mention my completely unacademic and non-professional opinion that people will judge a nice women harshly for being rude once, but accept a woman with a history of rudeness for just “being that way”. It’s another way that Elain may feel trapped in her “nice girl” persona. I think she started out that way - kindness and light and generosity is 100% in Elain’s character in the first place. It’s not as if she went into the Court of Nightmares and suddenly Cassian thought, “wait, she fits right in to this shithole of depravity”. No, he still thought the literal opposite. It’s just that once people get used to you doing all their emotional labor, they will continue to take advantage of it, even if they don’t realize its cost.

• were you hurting? too congested to breathe? fever? He needed to know so he could help you feel better

• "I–I know it feels awful, I really do...but I need you to tell me what's going on so I can help you."

• was quick to comfort you, putting his large hand on your forehead to feel your temperature

• felt really bad about it because he'd never seen you cry until then

• reassured you that it would pass soon enough under his care

• since he was kind of going to and fro his lab and kitchen throughout the day, made Mikey stay with you for the couple of minutes he'd be gone just to make sure he wouldn't miss anything you wanted or need

I just... do not like this drama.

It started out pretty good actually, a solid three-star in my opinion. It was stupid and silly in a cute way, but after a couple of episodes, it just lost completely track of what it was trying to be.

My first critique was the lack of fantasy elements in this other than having just a gumiho - if there are magical beings like that, why not expand on that universe and actually make something of it, instead of making it feel empty? Something like Tale of the Nine-Tailed, where it expands into a whole different side of the world we thought we knew. But this quickly became the least of my dislikes about this.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw some minor spoilers here, but I don't really think they'll ruin anything for you, if you haven't already watched this drama - they are only actual roommates for what feels like under half of the drama. For the rest of the drama, they decide to make him her actual TEACHER! And for me, even though they knew each other before and all that jazz, it is just every shade of weird. WHY would a romance drama go this way? Make him her classmate and all would be fixed?

The drama is also all over the place, picking up plot points and creating drama only to end it not even an episode later. It tries out doing some slight horror at one point, but it was over before I could blink, and we just never hear of that problem ever again. It goes from 0 to 100 and back again very jarringly several times, and it does not feel like a coherent story.

The camerawork is not my favorite either. It makes some weird choices with doing very in-your-face shots and extreme close-ups that I just didn't like. It plays around with doing doodles on screen for effect, but not often enough for it to feel like it completely makes sense.

Also, this drama has a love triangle, which honestly, I'm not even surprised. It also gives you a serious second-lead syndrome, because you come to realize that Shin Woo-yeo is actual trash (okay I might just be mad here, but he's not a very good lead tbh (no hate on the actor, all hate on the script)).

About 12 episodes in, I realized that this drama is basically just twilight but actually slightly worse, and I am so mad about it. We have the emotionally constipated, nearly-immortal dude falling for plain-girl with zero romantic experience. She gives up everything for him, only for him to fuck her over several times. She leaves behind an actual good guy for a douche. They risk it all to be together and somehow have a happy end.

This falls into the same category as My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (which I feel like I should have seen coming? 😂), where the characters show zero growth and learn absolutely nothing throughout the drama.

So yeah, I hate that I watched this, and I'm going to need to watch a proper romance after this to rinse my poor brain.

Why do You dislike Scott Snyder? I mean I have my reasons.. like a lot of the Court of Owls stuff, his convoluted plots, making Dick a punching bag for the broody bats, horrible at writing the family as a family he literally wrote Death of the Family I mean....*kill bill sirens* ... Also the ''son of a Damian'' line from Black Mirror etc. But I'm curious if you have more reasons since I'm pretty new and I'm told that he likes Dick and wanted to write Dick focused books and I don't.. buy it.

LOL yeah, all of that for sure, and I mean.....tbh, I don’t pay enough attention to his interviews and stuff to even be aware that he’s said that about liking Dick and wanting to write Dick-centric books, but I’m with you on that....not necessarily meaning anything.

God knows I’ve lost track of how many fic writers in this fandom swear up and down they love Dick Grayson and yet I avoid their stories with extreme energy, lmao, because I’ve read enough of their takes on DG that I’m like hmmm, yeah, we are not the same, lol. I mean, there’s a certain couple fic writers who just are like....DETERMINED to mention Danny Chase every single time I make a post about why I’m annoyed by the focus on Dick’s allegedly infamous temper. And its always the exact same song on repeat, they’re like “OH-HO, so apparently you don’t remember the time Dick choked Danny, a literal CHILD, just because Danny had the nerve to tell him Jason died, cuz like, I do, and it was AWFUL and Danny could have died TOO y’know, that’s how mad Dick was.” 

And then I just kinda stare at these words that apparently mean things, and enter a fugue state where an unknown amount of time passes and by the end of it I feel 80 million epochs older, and its like....no, I absolutely do remember that time when Dick grabbed Danny by the shirt and yelled in his face because he just found out his brother died and Danny said “what’s the big deal, its not like it doesn’t happen all the time” and this was absolutely not an awesome and fun scene for anyone, no matter how understandable Dick’s upset was at the time. BUT, I also happen to remember, since y’know, it was in that literal exact same issue, how then Dick went to see Bruce, and due to BRUCE’S upset about Jason’s death, Bruce literally punched his remaining son to the ground, screams about how it was all Dick’s fault, and kicks him out of the house Dick grew up in and tells him to leave his keys with Alfred. 

And its like......the very same people who LOVE to throw around references to Danny Chase in order to puff up the claims about Dick Grayson being volatile and extreme and having a Dangerous Temper like, flat out REFUSE to ever even ACKNOWLEDGE that scene with Dick and Bruce, from the literal exact same issue, because they at the same time claim that THIS was bad writing and OOC and Bruce would never.....but apparently, the writing from ten pages before it was just fine and completely accurate and Dick absolutely would not only ever, he would always, and thus Dick’s Legendary Dangerous Temper is canon and its why Dick can’t have nice things or people being nice to him in these writers’ stories, its too Dangerous, he might get mad I guess.

And each time this comes up on this site, I’m always like....hey, science side of tumblr, is it possible that insisting on vilifying Dick for his reaction to someone in the wake of Jason’s death whilst simultaneously refusing to acknowledge the scene of Bruce’s reaction to Dick is canon or in-character despite existing in the exact same issue and written by the exact same writer.....like....could this be one of those double standards I’m always going on about? And isn’t it in fact reasonable to question just how much or how little someone actually means it when they say they love a character but want that character flogged in the middle of the town square for a Bad Reaction to something that also prompted a Bad Reaction from another character but this character, they’ll like, throw themselves in front of a moving train if it keeps someone from daring to even suggest that THEIR reaction was canon and in-character and might potentially say something damning about their temper or behavior with friends or family?

Sorry, that example was right there on the tip of my brain today because like....I literally just saw another post around this oft-deceased and resurrected and killed to death again dead horse like, five minutes ago and then came to dip into my ask box for the first time today and it was like.....destiny. Assuming destiny has some free time to kill and nothing better to do, which, I mean, hey, everyone’s allowed a hobby is all I’m saying.

LOL sooooooooooo, ANYWHO, its just like.....ugh, I’m so over being expected to take at face value any writers, whether professional or fan, saying “oh but I love this character or that character, and due to that being my preface to everything else I say or do in regards to this character, you have zero basis for claiming that you do not like or trust my depiction of this character because ummm, read much? I literally JUST said, I love them though? Wow. Insert scoffs of incredulity here, I don’t even know how to talk to someone who thinks I don’t like a character I claimed I like just because literally everything else I say or do about them paints an opposing picture to the contrary.”

LMAO. Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. But yeah, like, I think EVERY canon Batfam writer has made a similar claim in recent years about pretty much every Batfam character, and at a certain point it starts to be like....okay, if all of you are telling the truth here, shouldn’t we see more canon evidence of like....these characters that you’re writing, like....actually even LIKING each other? At what point are we allowed to question the legitimacy of you saying oh I totes love this character, that’s why I write their family as abusing them, that’s just love, baby, that’s what it looks like.

Personally, I’d like to see more of us at least using qualifiers? I mean, I do say I don’t hate Tim, or Bruce, or any of these characters, but I get how people could be dubious about that and be all, umm, you rant about them a lot, because like...yeah. Fair. That’s a valid critique. SO its a lot more accurate for me to be like, I love 90s Tim and I just have become increasingly less enchanted with the character over the past twenty years since then, enough so that my knee-jerk reactionism to people bashing Dick’s character BECAUSE of what Dick did or didn’t do to Tim in their eyes, is like.....disinclined to view the situation or his character these days through 90s-Tim rose-colored glasses. 

Similarly, I truly don’t hate Bruce, at least not when he’s not being written as physically and emotionally abusive and/or just plain neglectful, BUT I absolutely despise the abuse apologism rampant in most fandoms, but particularly in this one, where people will make like Cirque-de-Soilei contortionists in order to prove that Bruce beating this kid or that kid isn’t actually abuse, its cuz they made him do it....rather than people just being like, no, that’s abuse right there on the page and I don’t stand for it or stan that Batman, so I have zero desire to defend that scene or his actions there from his perspective, and am totally fine with taking a seat when someone speaks up about how much they hate what Bruce did to his kid there in that scene and how it affects their read of the characters as a whole.

Its like....that too, is a thing you can do, instead of just.....trying to explain why Bruce isn’t abusive see, because what happened there wasn’t actually abuse, since it couldn’t have been, because Bruce isn’t abusive, see, he would Never.

And yet so rarely do people actually do that, and we have people literally championing themselves as members of the Good Dad Bruce Protection Squad when the frank reality is there CAN BE NO GUARANTEE of him ever and always being a Good Dad, when like....his characterization, ultimately, is dependent on how he’s written by canon writers who ARE NOT US. Which makes that desire to see him as just a good dad and nothing but a good dad always, like....not quite as understandable as it otherwise might be, and instead just kinda....willful, an admission that a lot of fans in this fandom will just flat out ignore all evidence to the contrary of this stated claim about what Bruce inherently IS, when inherently all he is happens to be a character who manifests whatever those in creative control of him choose to manifest via him. Like.....there are ways to go about that kinda thing, its just....that isn’t it. Something like “Proud member of the Keep Bruce Wayne a Good Dad Squad’ or something along those lines? I’d have ZERO issue with, because that’s ACTIONABLE, not WILLFUL. It posits not that Bruce simply IS this way and there’s no ifs, ands or buts about it, but rather that just because he isn’t this way in some instances, that doesn’t mean we have to agree with it or condone that interpretation of him, y’know?

But people are like....unwilling to make that distinction or hold that nuance a lot of the times, so my dislike of Bruce as he’s written in certain ways or by certain writers like....grows and evolves and mutates into Godzilla rampaging through downtown New York, until its understandable that people reading my blog intermittently and who don’t follow everything I say on the subject are like.....”Bold of you to claim you like lizards in this one post when I have here nine other posts where you’re just like, FEAR the murderous monster-lizard destroying New York for it is Dangerous and Fearsome. Back to Snyder though....yeah, he can claim he likes Dick all he wants, because y’know what, Tynion says the same thing and its been well established by moi that my fondest wish for Tynion is that he be kept far, far away from Dick’s character whenever possible. And I’m pretty sure Tom King claims he loves all these characters and we’re all like HAHAHHAHA and we know Lobdell insists he loves Jason Todd and its like wow how curious then that hardly any other Jason Todd stans love you.

The ironic thing about my random bouts of ugh Snyder in a lot of posts however, is that......tbh, its not even his depiction of Dick that makes me dislike him as much as I do? LMAO. I mean, I’m not a fan of it personally, for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, but I don’t like a lot most canon writers’ depiction of Dick these days and haven’t for years. The thing I really dislike Snyder for, personally, is his depiction of Damian.

Its just.....its very Not Good, a lot of the time. Oh, there are moments here and there, but you could claim that for any writer, really, but for the most part, like.....ooof, I haven’t read Snyder’s work on Damian recently enough to really cite specific moments off the top of my head, because I’ve been avoiding anywhere he’s writing Damian for awhile now BECAUSE of it, but....a LOT of the ‘demon brat’ shit in regards to Damian comes from Snyder’s work, and like, I’m always kinda like “hey is making Demon anything the go-to nickname for a kid of Arab descent who is already compared to a terrorist enough as it is like....really the best we can do” to begin with, and Snyder absolutely 100% does not help with that.

To be fair, its not remotely like its all just on him, the stuff that has had a lot of us complaining for years about the blood son crap and the insistence on acting like there’s this stark divide between Bruce and Damian and the rest of the Bat siblings, I mean, see: Tom King again, its just. Ugh, okay, Im gonna have to get back to this in the near future with actually sourced gripes about why I think Snyder’s Damian in particular is absolute crap and could he just not, though. Because it really is my chief complaint with him, like I was never gonna be a fan of his in general just because he’s someone who's like DARK MULTIVERSE BATMAN FUCK YEAH and I’m someone who’s like DARK MULTIVERSE BATMAN UGH FUCK WHY.....lol....BUT like I mention in other posts.....its not like he’s incapable of doing decent stuff or that he’s never written anything I like, because ironically, he IS the biggest canon backer of Duke Thomas and pretty much single-handedly responsible for Duke retaining as much of a presence as he has in recent years instead of just appearing and blipping out of existence like a one-hit wonder, and that can’t be overlooked or considered inconsequential.

That just also kinda makes it all the more annoying that his Damian is so very.....objectionable to me, but yeah. Anyway, that’s the curious case of my very mixed feelings on Scott Snyder, with a side dish of generalized “lol oh, so you do in fact love this character? Well magically all my criticisms of your take on them have now disappeared!”

Someone that's been there before, or someone that hasn't? My take btw: Edward and James. Edward at Wellsworth Sheds makes so much sense, and James should've been kicked out as the punishment. Yeah, Thomas/Percy at Ffarquhar would be neat but Toby's at Arlesdale End now. Henry doesn't need to stay at Vicarstown and Emily is just there.

JD41796: Honestly do what the series did and move Edward to Wellsworth because that actually makes sense, and throw Thomas and Percy back with Toby. Have the engines stay closest to their place of work, and have the sheds be what it used to be; whoever is working in that area, stays there.

epiclafiteau: Edward moving to Wellsworth to be closer to his branchline was a smart move, and it made sense. The issue is they're like "Henry's going to Vicarstown ok bye". I'm sure we were supposed to get an episode further explaining it but they haven't done so yet and the only thing to back it up is the fact that Henry is on the Mainland in 70% of the specials lol.

StreakSmeargle: I’d actually kick out three. Thomas, Percy, and Edward. Thomas and Percy can move to Ffarquhar (and honestly Nia can live there too). And Edward can move to Wellsworth like he already does. Fill up the missing Tidmouth slots with Rebecca and maybe the Scots?

epiclafiteau: Unless I'm missing something, I'm not actually sure where exactly Duck, Oliver, Donald and Douglas stay in the CGI Series. We see Ryan, Daisy, Judy & Jerome at Harwick but are there sheds somewhere else on the Little Western? It made sense for Duck to stay at Tidmouth in Duck and the Slip Coaches cause he was needed nearby, something they should do more often, but I don't think we've actually seen where he normally stays.

StreakSmeargle: There should be sheds at Arlesburgh if the RWS is any indication. Duck, Oliver, and Toad would realistically stay there. Donald and Douglas could also stay there but it might make sense to have them at Tidmouth as they’re not strictly tied to Little Western only. Gordon, James, Henry, Rebecca, and Emily can definitely stay at Tidmouth tho. Henry at Vicarstown was a neat concept but it went nowhere so I say move him back.

epiclafiteau: I can get past Edward moving because of etc reasons but the big 3 should definitely stick together. Edward leaving felt sort of natural because it had a whole episode to it and he suggested staying at Wellsworth permanently. Henry liked the idea, followed by deciding to transfer to Vicarstown, and nothing happened.

StreakSmeargle: If they ever do move Henry back to Tidmouth, they could do an episode where he starts reconsidering his decision on moving to Vicarstown but worries about what the others will think. That would allow him to move back and even potentially shedding light on why he moved in the first place.

They just haven't executed it to it's fullest ability. James could be an interesting choice as a punishment for crashing into it in the first place. I feel like Gordon is the only one who should stay there no matter what. Emily was the reason the 7th she'd was added but that doesn't necessarily mean she HAS to stay there and Henry, should have probably stayed but could easily go somewhere else and it would work. Tidmouth AND Vicarstown both honestly don't make much since for Henry. Yes, Henry does go to the mainland sometimes but not as much as he works elsewhere. If anything, Henry should have moved to Wellsworth with Edward. Since he has to go to Brendam anyways to pick up the Flying Kipper, and Wellsworth is in the center of the island so it would make it easier for him to work anywhere. As opposed to be on either side.

Wellsworth is on Edward’s branch line, and he could be a mentor to Philip like he was to Thomas in The Adventure Begins (too bad no episodes have so far done that). As for Henry, he goes up to Vicarstown a lot anyway when he travels to the Mainland, and with him taking The Flying Kipper at night, he hardly has any time to rest at Tidmouth. I don’t agree with James being moved out as punishment, as he showed remorse in An Engine of Many Colours and was forgiven.

NWTom25: I choose three, Edward, Henry and Emily. It make sense to remove Edward to his branch line shed, Henry at Vicarstown since he could run goods trains from there to the mainland and Emily could stay at Knapford sheds like she did in CAE! I honestly don't see the need to remove Thomas and Percy since it had been stated in a Mr. Perkins interval that Knapford was the starting point for Thomas' branch line. So it make sense in the current series to have Thomas and Percy at the sheds. Plus Toby could fill in the spot at the sheds that the engines I chose left and maybe fill in the space for any of the secondary characters (e.g - Duck, Donald, Douglas, Rosie etc.).

TidmouthStudios: Y know if Knapford sheds came back I would LITERALLY LOVE THAT SO MUCH. I think Emily earned her spot in the sheds though and calling all engines definitely made a good move by specifically confirming that Emily was an official part of the core cast.

Going off where he was going to be stationed makes more sense and serves as a sorta mentor for Philip like bill and Ben before him.

Why not have a rotating cast of engines at Tidmouth Sheds per season. It would allow the writers to switch the engines in the shead and we wouldn't need to feel that Tidmouth Sheds = 100% steam team residences. Maybe then when Edward and Henry moved out it wouldn't have felt like such a blow or need explanation.

Let's talk about Eric Effiong

Let's be honest Eric's storyline and characterization is one of the most appealing out of all the characters in Sex Education periodt. A true gay, fierce, Drag QUEEN and I feel like ranting about this amazing force of nature. (Spoilers. Duh.)

When I saw the trailer for Sex Education it didnt even hit me that Eric was gay until I read the synopsis. Was just like "Oh I wonder which one of these three mains are the gay one people keep talking about" even after I saw him in drag like a dumbass 😣😂. Personally im glad we've reached a point where gay guys aren't overly feminine and even the brightest colours won't differ a character from the rest (unless I'm just a blind bish and he was obviously gay from the trailer) ei 👏🏾 ther 👏🏾 way; his character was refreshing when I started watching the show. I immediately clicked with him and knew what every look he gave or hand gesture he did meant. Felt nice. When Adam pushed him into the locker for the first time and started with the heterohomoerotic bs I knew that Adam had a raging boner for Eric and was another internalized homophobic bully™ and wasn't really excited for what was to come but I knew it was coming and tbh I liked it in the end.

Eric and Otis' friendship is so pure. Like?!? Get me a straight supportive bestie lilke Otis? Ik they fought but even then Otis was respectful and kept his boundaries and let Eric go through the motions before immediately belting into an apology at the first chance he got. Their dancing scene?!? Iconic. The fact that Eric sees Otis' house as safe and another home?!? Iconic. Otis going drag with Eric to watch an LGBT+ movie as a TRADITION (meaning they've done it numerous times)?!?! Iconic. The fact that Otis was straight up ditching Eric and Eric STILL tolerated him and let him do his thing without too much pressure!?! The most iconic of them all. Just pure love and respect all around.

I am so proud of Erics growth over the course of the season starting from a naive and scared gay doormat to facing homophia and getting beat up by those assholes on his birthday no less to losing his best friend and becoming depressed to channeling that anger into defending himself when people tried him to getting his sparkle back and coming back more fierce that ever before.

Speaking of him getting his sparkle back lets talk about that and why that scene is so important. A random guy asked Eric for directions and Eric noticed his nails were polished and the guy was wearing earrings and he was a big ole black dude. He was like Eric. When Eric noticed that the guy was out, loud, glamorous and proud he immediately switched back into the bright colourful and wonderfully gay Eric we all know and love.

THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS!!!!

It shows people that its okay to be who they actually are and inspires those who are lost to find or return to their true selves. Representation isn't just some offhand thing to throw on a character last minute. And even if you can relate to other characters who arent like you, it is always an amazing feeling to have a character that IS like you. It turned Eric from a popularity seeking doormat into a hurricane with 6 inch heels who was ready to straight up beat down a bully he's had for 4 years. It even inspired him to go back to church and rejoin a community that he closed off. That's exactly how it feels to have someone successful in the media and your life to look up to. Eric only interacted with that man for a few minutes but those few minutes changed his life for the better. So that's a lovely reminder for all who love to bash representation.

Back tracking to Eric's dull colourless period after the attack and his fight with Otis. It was saddening to see one of the brightest characters go dull and even the school felt it. He turned from a guy who rarely stood up for himself and what he wanted into the sass master he reserved only for his friends. All of his built up anger was released causing him to explode on Mr Hendricks (who is adorable tbh and just trying to do his best) and Anwar (I was proud of that punch you go glenn co co) and he even sounded off on his dad who he's usually passive aggressive to at worst. Just goes to show that the happiest faces can harbor the biggest pains and can snap. Moral of the story? Protect the happy few.

Eric also has a great family. Like that obviously know Erics gay and wears dresses because its all right there in his room which his parents enter at their leisure and while it seems that they're a bit homophobic its revealed that they (Erics dad at least) just wants Eric to be safe as he's already a target for being black and apart of an immigant family. He accepts Eric for who he is and what he does he just doesnt want anyone else to give him shit for it and if that's not one of the sweetest things in this world idek what is. Eric and his dad was probably one of my favorite dynamics in the show and watching his dad slowly fully accept that his son was strong and able to stand for himself he was able to become stronger too. This dynamic is important because I never see any gay black characters have a close relationship with their fathers and it was very heartwarming to watch.

Now onto Erics love life. He has a crush on the highschools other only gay guy Anwar who's the typical mean sassy gay we've all come to expect in highschool dramas. Otis saying that Eric doesnt have to have a crush on the only other openly gay guy at school was such a mood as its commonly shown that any gays in close proximity should get together. When Eric punched him I internally went "Finally!" Because all those jeers were becoming annoying. I'm glad Anwar got to come out to his mum over it though. And straight up told the audience that Eric didn't like feminine guys (alluding to him and Adams eventual clean up scene as of we didn't see it coming already).

Moving on to Adam tho, like I said we all been knew that this

was indeed coming and even though I hate the bully x bullied trope I still ended up liking it and hoping that Adam would change. The building up to that kiss was long awaited from episode 1 straight through to 8 with all the longing looks that Adam kept side glancing Eric with and the face cupping and the growls and the lingering touches. I just kept going sthdjksksbslaldbd when one of those moments happened followed shortly after with disgust because gays falling for their abuser is washed up but then immediately going back to jajaklamabsldkd because im shipping trash so 🤷🏿. Eric stepping to Adam in at the ball was one of the most iconic scenes of the show (along with the "Its My Vagina" scene) and the exchange between him and Adam gave be actual chills. The tension was THICCCC. Erics OUTFIT to the ball gave me chills 😭😭 dude came to slay and had everyone at that school proper shook and I honestly could NOT be more proud. I was hoping Adam would become a better person over the course of the season but nope so hopefully they cover all the issues that Adam has in season 2 and properly give him a redeption arc cuz he's still a trashy pos he's just a disaster bi on top of it. (Adam immediately going to suck Eric off is confidence I can only dream of achieving 💀💀) The lab scene was also cute but made me mad because how could Adam look scared, confident and still be a douchebag all in the span of a few seconds was beyond me. A+ acting on Connor Swindells part. I can see why Adam would have to stay in the closet and keep their... relationship?? a secret because it seems like Headmaster Groff would be a homophobic piece of shit and would add to the ever growing list of things Adam did wrong. Even so it doesn't excuse the fact that Adam is in fact a bully and Eric deserves much better. Was sad seeing Adam being driven off from Eric in the end tho. Eric thought that Adam didn't want to see him at all and was probably heartbroken and probably thinks Adam left because of him (my poor baby 😭😭). I feel bad for Adam too because he was just starting to express himself and was at the beginning of a redemption arc when he was just wisked away from the boy he's loved for what seems to be a very long time. I just want my boys to be happy and non toxic and I wish their relationship and them all the best in Season 2.

Eric Effiong is my favorite character in the show and I really want to thank Ncuti Gatwa for portraying him so well and for the shows writers who gave him a very fleshed out character with an amazing storyline and conclusion. His growth was incredible and his strength is immeasurable. I'm 100% certain that he will be a character the community remembers for years to come. Patiently now waiting on what's to come in Season 2 💙🙌🏾.

all in all i’m super excited because the actors are great and i think they know why crossing the line was so successful as a series. all their tv appearances were always so supportive of the community as are the actors (especially zach) so i think that’s where i trust them on this sequel.

tbh i won’t even be mad if the story itself isn’t that riveting (crossing the line itself is quite simple in its story but the execution was great) if they get the romance between xia yu hao and qiu zi xuan right.

however i do have some reservations regarding the screenwriter. she also wrote “obsession” and “right or wrong” which are both not really great examples of representation imo and definitely fall more on the BL side than the queer media one. crossing the line is pretty much something i’d categorize as BL but it also manages to fall under my idea of queer media: the step-siblings story being more on the typical bl side whereas qiu zi xuan/xia yu hao read also as a realistic romcom couple. don’t get me wrong, the wenwu cp isn’t anywhere near the couples of “right ro wrong” or “obsessed” on my scale, i love them and want to see them in the sequel as well. however their story/characterization is full of standard bl tropes, tropes that aren’t common in queer media per say (the whole step-sibling stuff to begin with). the xia yu hao/ qiu zi xuan story is also a standard trope (”rough guy is actually a misunderstood sweetheart who butts heads with proper but unstrung straight a’s student only to bond and fall in love”) but that’s more of a romcom than just a bl trope. tropes aren’t bad, even when you don’t put a twist on them. they exist because stories like these happen in real life or are at least represent something that we wish would happen to ourselves in real life. but bl tropes are more on the wacky side, not doing much to actually deal with the topic of queer love but more with either “forbidden” or exotic/exiting scenarios. (xiao xiao’s obsession with the step-siblings even before they actually start dating).

i know that even some of my mutuals have very differing opinions on “right or wrong” but i really hated it. to me it portrayed an abusive relationship as wholesome and something to strive for even though the gaslighting was imo pretty obvious. not to mention the sexism and back-handed homophobia (the main cp basically acting out a traditional straight relationship) -> but i already ranted about that.

so i really hope they know why crossing the line was so popular, why people wrote to the cast & makers about how they gave them the courage to love themselves for who they are or even to come out and be loud and proud. but there is this lingering distrust in the track-record of the writer.

besides the main couples i hope that xiao xiao as a character gets a make-over because she was really bland and was some kind of cartoonish version of a fujoshi (i hate fujoshi “culture” with a burning passion) but the actress deserves better and so does the series. i actually liked qiu zi xuan’s little sister but for the movie i hope we get some fleshed out female characters, even if they are not that important.

as far as i’m aware the movie will be set after they graduate and both zach and fandy said they’re are not averse to more intimate scenes. otherwise i have no idea what it’s going to be about, but i wrote some kind of wish-list a while back.

i think these are most of my thoughts about the movie? the anxiety section looks kinda long but really i am just sooooo excited for the movie, i don’t think they are gong to mess up, i just hope that they are getting the details right.
