6. Elijah
In all honesty, Elijah wasn’t always his name. It’s not the one he was born with, and it’s hardly the only one he’s had over the years. He signed his letters as Elias for centuries, he went by Ilyās when they stayed in Al-Andalus, Élie in France, and Elis in medieval England. There are people out there—vampires for the most part—who still know him as Ilya Mikhailovich. Elijah is merely the English variant of a name he has used variations of throughout ten centuries.
a series of random TO headcanons
#random to headcanons#elijah mikaelson#the originals for ts#elijah#i'm gonna be real with you guys#I looked up the phonology of old norse and elijah as a name... was just not possible lol#let alone the fact that he had a hebrew/biblical name in pre-christianised norway#tho we can always headcanon esther as jewish I suppose#(it would explain rebekah too)#also... elijah changing his name based on what language he and his family are speaking#does explain why rebekah pronounces her name differently than klaus#this is me blatantly retconning canon but honestly wtf @ the show's naming choices#i'm mining that behindthename article for all it's worth tbh#anyway i guess you can argue he just had a hebrew name#but I still like elijah changing his name to fit in when he speaks another language#it was a lot more common to translate names too
