Sorry it took me so long to get these notes up. Between internet issues and pure busy-ness, it's been rough. But here they are! The notes from AX Day 1's Trigun Stampede panel! Now with images! (Sorry for Chilchuck's head in most of them. He's awfully tall for a half-foot.)

Trigun Stampede presented by Toho Animation, Studio Orange, and Crunchyroll

The guests for this panel were Yoshihiro Watanabe (producer at Orange) and Katsuhiro Takei (producer at Toho animation), with Steve Liu from Crunchyroll hosting. (They had a translator as well, but Watanabe promptly stole her job.)

One other thing I'm going to note before we get started is that this was Takei's first time talking about all this in front of an audience since Episode 12 aired. He kept looking out at the practically full auditorium (the panel was held in one of the ballrooms, so easily one of the biggest rooms at the venue) and seeing all the fans and cosplayers and just grinning from ear to ear. He was clearly very exited.

Introduction

They started off by playing a quick video recapping Season 1. (It really made me want to watch the show on a big screen. It looks great even on a projector!) After the video, Liu started in on the interview questions. Please don't take anything below as a direct quote unless it's in quotation marks; I'm not that fast with my notes, so I'm mostly paraphrasing and relying on my memory, either of which could include my own misinterpretation or just be flat-out wrong.

The first question was, how do you feel about the future of the series?

Watanabe said their passion (for creating more of the series) was burning within them.

Takei noted that when the show was initially announced at AX some years back, they were very nervous about it since they were remaking a well-known and well-loved title, but today, looking out at all the fans, he felt a lot more confident.

Behind the Scenes of Trigun Stampede

They then showed some concept art from the famed Trigun Bible. This included what Watanabe called "Vash's projection of Rem." Seems like they came up with this design before coming up with Vash's dark design.

They also shared some concept art of what most people assume to be spiky-haired Vash...

...but which Watanabe quickly noted is actually Vash in Episode 1. You know, when he's hanging upside-down. Takei added that Muto, the director, was a bit mischievous and had a tendency to lie to the staff about when certain designs would appear in the series. He apparently hid a handful of Easter eggs and foreshadowing (like Vash having spikier hair) throughout the series.

They also had some concept art of Knives and of Vash's wing.

They then showed some concept art for some friends all y'all might recognize if you read the manga....

...but in case you didn't, I'll identify the characters below:

Top Row: Vash the Stampede, Millions Knives, Meryl Stryfe, Roberto Deniro (the blank one), Legato Bluesummers

Bottom Row: Monev the Gale, Dominique the Cyclops, Leonof the Puppet-Master, E.G. the Mine, Nicholas the Punisher, Midvalley the Hornfreak, Hoppered the Gauntlet, Rai-Dei the Blade (his name doesn't actually look like Rai-Dei here, though, so they may be calling him something different or they may just be subbing in kanji; it's too small for me to tell), Grey the Ninelives, Livio the Double Fang, Zazie the Beast, Elendira the Crimsonnail

If you're sitting there thinking, "Aww, they came up with all these designs but we saw so few of them!" then I have news for you! Watanabe said we should be keeping an eye out for more of these folks in the next part.

Favorite Scenes

Next, Liu asked both of the guests about their favorite scenes, and before they got into talking about them, we were shown a video not just of the final scene, but the storyboard, the rough cut version, and the version used for dubbing, all on one screen.

Takei answered first, and he chose the scene from episode 1 where Vash goes up against Chuck Lee, a.k.a. the military policeman from July.

(The audience kept laughing at Vash's wonderfully goofy face in the storyboard.)

When asked why he loved that scene, Takei noted that everything they wanted to accomplish in Trigun Stampede was encapsulated in it. In the manga and '98, Vash is more funny and tough (although "a good-looking guy"), and here in Stampede, he's rather more wimpy (although "still a good-looking guy"). This scene is a good blend of both sides of Vash.

It also showcases a "good action scene," which he clarified by noting there aren't many anime where so much drama and emotion is centered around one bullet. Takei also noted (though it's hard to convey to you all via still images) that Muto trusted his animators to improve on the storyboards. He's not as strict as some other directors and didn't want them to feel confined to stick to it too closely, but rather wanted them to enhance what was storyboarded out as they felt was appropriate.

Which leads to Watanabe's choice for favorite scene: the one where Vash is running through his shattered memories toward Rem and finally breaks free of Knives' prison and yeets Knives himself out. (Alas, Watanabe did not, in fact, use the word "yeet.")

Watanabe said he chose this scene because he loved the details that the team added to it after the storyboarding. The storyboard just had Vash running, but they added all these subtle movements and emotion that created a much stronger impact. When the completed scene was presented in Studio Orange, all who saw it were in awe.

Upcoming Trigun Stampede Merch

First up, as many of you already know, we have the Special Edition DVD/Blu-Ray set, which is currently available via preorder on Crunchyroll.

Second up is a new Vash figure! So new they haven't finished coloring it yet, BUT they did note this will be Black Vash (a.k.a. Grape Juice Vash) from Ep. 12. Takei is particularly excited about this because he always wanted to get the Black Vash figure from back in the day, but wasn't able to, and now he's gonna be able to get his own Stampede version. This figure is actually designed by the same person who designed the Vash figures for the manga back in the day. Interestingly, after they picked him but before they met to collaborate on designs, he came up with the current design for the figure. This worked out exceedingly well, since the design Orange wanted for the figure was basically the same thing.

Also, this Vash figure will soon have a Wolfwood companion figure. Because you can't have just one of them. The Wolfwood figure is still being designed, so alas, no images of it yet.

There's also been a restock of the orders for the clothes collaboration they had with SuperGroupies before, so a bunch of that stuff will be available again soon. They're also adding a new item to the lineup, and that's a black version of the Vash jacket. (I checked their website and it looks like they might also be adding a Livio EoM jacket. Hot.)

Preview Stuff for the Next Season

Ok, first and foremost, I'm gonna note there was NO TRAILER SHOWN, so let's crush those hopes now lest they linger and lead to disappointment. What they DID show was this:

First, a preview image of the characters for the upcoming season....

TBH, the only difference I really noticed is Knives' hair seems fluffier, but new art is always nice! Also, this one looks like a win for foot, ankle, and/or hand fetishists.

Second, we got a lovely video thanks from Nightow himself!

(He said he wanted to be there, but unfortunately there wasn't a strong enough headwind for him to run to the con. And for the curious, he's wearing a Guillermo del Toro shirt.)

Nightow being a fan of Stampede and overjoyed that so many people love his story isn't new. (Wonderful, but not new.) What IS new is he drew this nice little piece of art for us all.

He said this was his first time drawing Stampede Wolfwood. He had to get them to send him 3D images of the Punisher to be able to get it right, but he enjoyed making it! He said "it felt old and new at the same time." He can't believe next year will be the series' 30th anniversary. (Congrats, OG fans. Now we can all feel old together.)

The third thing they released was this.

Given the amount of trouble I've had posting this, I'm sure plenty of you already know that the next season/final chapter is going to be called Trigun Stargaze. Liu asked Takei about this title, and Takei said something like, "I don't know what this is about. Trigun Stargaze? What's that? This is news to me." He then (after noting he had just been joking) launched into what little he could tell us about the upcoming season.

He said he can't talk about the reason for the specific title, but that manga readers can probably make some good guesses.

Trigun Stargaze will take place 2 1/2 years after Stampede. They want to keep in mind the original concept behind Stampede, that being that because the previous Trigun stories have been so amazing, what they create needs to be amazing, too. He said they're proud of what they've made so far. It went beyond your imagination. He hopes Stargaze will go beyond your imagination, too.

Cosplayer Highlight

They decided to call all the cosplayers up to the space in front of the stage next. There were SO MANY COSPLAYERS!! Foolishly, I didn't take a panorama.

Costumes included '98 and Stampede versions of Vash, Wolfwood, and Meryl, as well as a handful of Millys (Millies?), not one but TWO groups doing Barbie & Ken-styled Vash and Wolfwood (the Barbie Vashes shouted, "Hi, Barbie!" at each other when everyone went to sit back down), an old-school Legato, a Zazie, and a group fully cross-playing the characters (with Meryl and Milly being male while Vash and Wolfwood were female; they did NOT change the costumes for any of the characters).

Liu handed out prizes to a few of them (they didn't have nearly enough prizes for all of them), and then they had all the cosplayers bunch up and face the stage and the guests turn around and took a picture of everyone. (If anyone has a link to the picture anywhere, let me know and I'll add it here. No, you can't see me in it; I'm much too far over to the side.)

Guests' Closing Thoughts

They were actually running early on the panel, so Liu opened it up to any additional comments either of the guests would like to make.

Takei still seemed overwhelmed by all the cosplayers (like I said, he spent the whole panel grinning from ear to ear at the audience), and he noted he had been worried about the Stampede characters being accepted by the fans. This was his first time seeing all the cosplayers, and he said that made him "feel safe."

Watanabe said he loved looking at the "multiverse" of Trigun. It had these previous iterations, and now it has Stampede, and the fans have both adopted it and adapted it, blending the different versions together and even adding their own things, and he really appreciates that. Takei added that while they created Trigun Stampede, if in 50 or 100 years, a new Trigun series is made, that would be great.

The animation for Stargaze is in process. Watanabe said he just recently saw some of it (a clip of only a few seconds that he, of course, couldn't show us) and it blew him away.

Both Watanabe and Takei are fans of the manga and the original series, and Takei said he's really wanted this series to happen, so he hopes we all look forward to it, too.

It’s finally nearing daybreak. Through the thick forest canopy, night is lifting for grey morning to take its place. From far away, you listen to the birds waking up and Hange close by, noisily fixing up the last modifications to the cart they plan to transport Levi with.

Surprisingly, he’s still napping; his head rests in your lap.

Or it seems that way. He could just be resting his eyes—eye. You know it hurts him to talk.

To avoid the thoughts that ought to be torturing you like they have all night, you fixate on the sheet draped over him as it slowly rises and falls.

Words, something, sit on your tongue. Finally, you can’t stand the silence anymore. Even if he isn’t conscious to listen.

“It’s almost time to go,” you murmur.

“I know,” he replies softly, muffled by the shifting bandages. His heavy eyes remain closed. “Thought… I’d be able to stand by now.”

You shake your head in a resigned sort of disbelief, smiling. There’s no humor in it. “You put on your own shirt.”

His brows pinch. He scoffs.

“Soon, I’m sure. Then, I think it’s almost over.”

His eye cracks open and peers at you as you continue playing with his bangs. They’re a little overgrown from a month stationed in a forest. You keep finicking with the way they’re parted.

He grunts. “I’m gonna fall asleep again if you keep doing that, sweetheart.”

“Sleep means healing.”

He raises his injured hand, and examines the dash of red that’s bled into the bandages since you last replaced them later into the night. Wordlessly, you lay your hand on his good one, which rests on his chest.

His chest shudders when he sighs, then winces. “I want to be done. I’m… I’m… so tired.”

Your eyes widen. Shocked by his sudden honesty, you lace your fingers together, feeling relief when he squeezes back.

You can’t make any guarantee that it’ll be okay. You can’t even make the guarantee that he can fight when the time comes.

“I’ll be right by your side when we finish,” you reply.

He holds steady, but vulnerable eye contact—so vulnerable. “You better.”

So, I'm currently in a writing proyect and I've been scrolling through your Tumblr for language adivces wich I'm very thankful and really appreciate for taking the time to explain. So, to the point; How does poetic names works in Chinese? I don't think someone actually explain it and I'm pretty curious. There are some steps? Or you just,, use the part that better sounds and goes with the character meaning? Or it's just too complicated for Non-Chinese people (And somekind disrespectful? I think??) Poetic names certainly aren't "too complicated for non-chinese people" lol. Nothing is too complicated to be explained; I think when/if people say that it's because it is a rather arduous process to explain it and maybe they just don't want to get into it.

But because I apparently hate sleep, I'm just gonna do it. LOL.

First, a little thing about Chinese poetry and how Chinese actually functions as a language. I can't really get into how to make poetic names without first explaining the basics. Of course there are many forms of poetry, but I think you're thinking along the lines of naming character based on historical and ancient poetry. Modern ones are a little bit more comprehensible and colloquial.

So first I'm gonna compare a Chinese poem "Begonia in the Fall" by Ji Xiaolan (b 1724, politician, philosopher, writer) to a section of one of my favourite poems by English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (b. 1772, writer, theologian, philosopher), "Midnight Frost".

《秋海棠诗》

憔悴幽花剧可怜

斜阳院落晚秋天

词人老大风情减

犹对残花一怅然

"Midnight Frost"

[...]Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee,

Whether the summer clothe the general earth

With greenness, or the redbreast sit and sing

Betwixt the tufts of snow on the bare branch

Of mossy apple-tree, while the night-thatch

Smokes in the sun-thaw; whether the eave-drops fall

Heard only in the trances of the blast,

Or if the secret ministry of frost

Shall hang them up in silent icicles,

Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.

You'll notice that a lot of Chinese poetry has exact number of characters in a verse with no punctuation. This is bc a) that's just the rule of that particular style of poem (there are other styles which doesn't demand it); b) ancient poetry was pretty much written in contracted language, as in, instead of saying "look how pretty the flower is", you say, "perceive flower beauty". This way you can express an entire paragraph in like... 8 words.

In comparison, for poems in English, even though the message of the poem might be muddled by metaphors and not very understandable to the people reading it, the grammar and - to a lesser extent - the syntax stay relatively the same as spoken language. Just because you're writing a poem doesn't mean you suddenly stop conjugating your verbs or dropping off "the"s and "an"s. That has to do with how English functions as a language. Each individual word has its set meaning and the language is bound by a more clear cut grammar.

Each individual character has its meaning, BUT when placed together with other characters, not only do new words form, but the meaning of the character itself can be distorted. A single character when used differently can be a noun or a verb or an adjective. Example: the character 生 sheng, by itself, means life (noun), to create/birth (verb) or raw (adjective).

Chinese grammar looks easy but is actually really fluid and suckie for learners. Chinese characters are words but also not-words. Each character can, in some cases, be a word by itself, but in everyday use actual "words" are more-often-than-not made up of more than one character. Example: dian 电 = electricity, nao 脑 = brain. But together, it means computer - electric brain. When a Chinese person says dian'nao, they're thinking about a computer, they're not thinking about electric brain.

生命 sheng ming: sheng = life (in the philosophical sense) ming = life (in the literal sense). Together they mean "living creature" or "life".

生孩子: sheng = to birth, haizi = child. Together it means to give birth to a baby.

BUT! 生气: sheng = to create; qi = air. Together it means to be angry. (yeah i know... lol)

生肉: sheng = raw; rou = meat.

Now that I got that out of the way, lemme go back to poetry. You can see now that what each character means has A LOT to do with the context that the rest of the sentence provides. When the language becomes contracted and shortened in a poem, it becomes VERY vague and hard to decipher, even for average Chinese people. Adding the fact that many of these poems are written by historical figures reflecting on events of the past and that the literal meaning of the poem maybe is a metaphor for another thing all together ....shit gets REAL complicated.

So how do Chinese people know/understand these poems? Simple answer: the very very very strict education system. Every child enrolled in school is MADE to read poems. I think there's a textbook for elementary children called 唐诗三百首 Three Hundred Poems of the Tang Dynasty. The book provides in the footnotes an explanation of the poem by literally dissecting the poem apart character by character. Not only does the education system make children learn the poem's meaning, they make you MEMORIZE them. As in when the bell rings and it's language class, Miss Teacher will call on any random poor third grader and says stand up and recite [insert poem name].

Memorizing poems has been a part of a robust language education in Chinese history since... the fucking dawn of time. It ain't going anywhere.

This is probably what people mean when they say, non-Chinese people will have a REALLY hard time choosing a poetic name. Because if you don't know how to read Chinese at all and you're just pulling random poems off the internet to try and guess at it's meaning....it's not gonna work.

Even I had a lot of trouble trying to find a poetic name for an OC. Most of my OC names are NOT poetic names. I didn't have an education in Chinese (I'm literally spewing Coleridge lol), so even for me it's like very very tasking to do this.

For me there's 2 options, the retrograde option or the anterograde option.

Anterograde option is: I have a sort of topic in mind. Let's say I want my character's name to mean Snow. Well okay I'll type in "poems in chinese about snow" and then see what I get. But that means I do have to sift through a BUNCH of poems, read them, understand what they're about, essentially decipher them, and then choose characters that sound nice together...which might not always work out.

But let's say you want to name your character after a more vague and nebulous idea like ambition or spirituality. How are you gonna find those poems?

The retrograde option is you think of a name FIRST and then you throw your name into google to look for poems containing the characters of the name. That's what I did for Jiang Yan (Jiang Yueqian 月千) in my au Midnight Sun.

Yue means moon and qian means thousand. I really liked the sound/flow of this name. I wanted to give it some meaning, but I searched and searched and I just couldn't find a poem that worked because like I said...I don't have a reservoir of poems in my head like kids who were educated in Chinese literature.

So finally I cracked and I just asked a friend. She's MUCH better at literature than I am and I said hey look, here's what I'm trying to do And she said oh Yueqian 月千, that's a nice name, reminds me of this particular poem.

皓月千里 - the moon casts a thousand miles of light

浮光跃金 - which dances upon the water, golden

静影沉壁 - the shadow of the moon itself like jade underwater*

Idk if you're from the CQL fandom, but essentially the OC is a girl whose parents had her out of wedlock (her father doesn't know), and her maternal uncle hid her away for protection after her mother (who in canon is a male character that I had genderbent for The Tropes) died. TLDR: her mom is like this sorceress who summons smoke with her spells, her uncle lives in an area with a lot of water (river, lakes), and her father is known as the Second Jade.

The poem was SO PERFECT. It had everything I wanted. But never in my LIFE could I have gotten to this poetic explanation of my OC's name if I didn't have my friend's help, and I speak Chinese FLUENTLY. I couldn't even get to this if I had asked my parents for help because they studied literature in school like eons ago and they're both in STEM. My friend however enjoys Chinese literature and could pull it up on command. Even then, she had to think about it.

It's just soo much labour. That's why only good Chinese writers have really poetic names. That's why parents before naming their kids literally browse poetry books and dictionaries. It's a really hard process and it's really not feasible to ask other people unless you're really good friends with them and it's a one time thing.

So at the end of the day, having a poetic name in Chinese doesn't just require literacy and comprehension, it requires a certain level of dedicated training in historical literature.

burying his nose in the back of your neck, he lets out a deep sigh, "i think it's nap time, hm?" a soft snore escaping your lips lets him know that you agree. he places a gentle kiss on the back of your neck, wrapping his arms around you tighter while whispering, "sleep well, princess." before he allows himself to drift off to sleep as well

mattsun opens the front door to your apartment with a tired sigh, disappointed when he finds the home seemingly empty. he checks through all the rooms only only to find you fast asleep on your side of the bed.

he tries his best not to wake you as he slides under the comforter but ultimately all the movement disturbs your slumber, he almost cracks a chuckle at the grumpy look on your face but decides it's in his best interest not to. "sorry, princess. i tried not to wake you." you soon forget your interrupted dream at the sound of his tired voice, "you're home early." you mumble arms opening for him to snake his way into. "i wasn't feeling well so the boss let me come home." his voice is muffled against your chest as he nuzzles further into the fabric of your shirt, you hum in acknowledgment.

with the way you're rubbing his back with one hand and running your hands through his hair with the other, it doesn't take him long to fall asleep, and soon you do the same, the soft rise and fall of his breathing coaxing you back into a peaceful slumber.

aran wasn't expecting to come home from morning practice to you sleeping soundly on the couch but he couldn't find himself to be upset at the adorable sight in front of him as he tucks some stray hair behind your ear.

he cups his warm hand over your cheek, thumb smoothly running over the skin, a love sick expression on his face as you slowly wake up. "you napped without me, princess." he pouts, and you plead that you only laid down for a minute and you really didn't mean to. "i'm just messing with you, baby. c'mon, let's go to the bed, your back is gonna hurt later if you stay here.

he lays down with you once you get to your shared bedroom, "'m sorry i fell asleep." your words are muffled into his chest, "it's alrigh baby, we can nao together now." he mumbles, placing a chaste kiss on the top of your head. you fall asleep almost immediately, your warmth and soft breathing lulling him to sleep soon after.

Em, I'm here to request my favourite trope, and that is the ✨stress stomach ache✨ Maybe two of your boys are out on a date, but one of them is extremely anxious about something that's been happening at work; he tries his best to not let it ruin the evening, but racing thoughts and an upset stomach eventually overwhelm him and he admits to his partner that he's not doing so well (I'm imagining sick/stressed Naoko, but please choose whoever you think it'd work for!)

Flick, you are an angel, thanks for the request. This was my first time writing this trope and I'm not really satisfied with how it turned out but I hope you can still enjoy it somehow!

“Babe? Babe! Are you listening?”

“Hm?” Naoko questioned as he finally looked up from his hands.

“So you weren’t listening.” Sevan sighed. “What’s going on with you today?”

Naoko jumped a little at the question. He thought he’d been subtle. The couple was currently out on their first date night in forever and both men had been looking forward to this evening. Unfortunately, Naoko was not enjoying himself as much as he’d liked.

“Nothing baby, really. Work was hard, that’s all.” Naoko tried to reason, his smile not quite reaching his eyes.

Sevan raised his eyebrows at that. His boyfriend was obviously keeping something from him. He also hadn’t missed the hand Naoko protectively kept on his stomach. “Work is always hard for you, babe but you never get like this.”

“Like what?”

“You’re fidgety, distracted and you seem uncomfortable. Is it me? Did I do something wrong?” Sevan asked nervously.

“No! Baby, no. I just had a really hard day. I’m fine though, I promise.” Naoko was trying to sound reassuring, but Sevan could see right through his act. He also knew however, that his boyfriend was stubborn. Too stubborn to admit something was bothering him, so Sevan decided to drop the matter.

While Sevan went back to digging into his delicious meal, Naoko was barely picking at his. His stomach was in knots and it was starting to get really painful.

Due to Covid life at the hospital was upside down and today had been especially bad. Naoko had double as many patients to tend to and double as many shifts to cover. It was only a matter of time until a mistake was going to be made, and today might have been the day.

Nao winced as a cramp shot through his abdomen. What if he really had messed up today? What if he was going to lose his job? What was he supposed to do then? What if-

Naoko hadn’t even realized he’d spaced out again until Sevan gently nudged his arm.

“Baby, talk to me please. You look like you’re about to have a panic attack.” Sevan was getting really worried. His boyfriend was pale and sweating, his breathing was quick and shallow, and his hand was now clenching at his stomach.

“Today-“ Naoko trailed off, taking a deep breath, trying his best to collect himself. “I messed up today.”

“What do you mean you messed up?” Sevan asked, gently encouraging his boyfriend to keep talking.

“A guy came into the ER for stomach pain. He looked okay, so I told him to sit down and wait. It was full as always, so it took a while until we could get to him. He repeatedly asked me to speed things up and I was getting agitated at that because I was obviously busy as hell and he looked fine! I just figured he was being whiny. So I let him wait. Then suddenly the guy starts screaming out of nowhere. Turns out he had acute appendicitis and his appendix burst in the waiting room.” Naoko stopped talking, once again closing his eyes, and taking a deep breath.

“Okay and how is the guy now?” Sevan asked, not quite understanding the problem.

“He is fine. He’ll be discharged in a couple of days.”

“Alright but then what are you so worked up about?” Sevan wondered aloud.

Naoko’s eyes widened at the question. “What am I worked up about? The guy’s appendix burst because of me! I’m supposed to see stuff like that coming! It’s my job to evaluate the severity of a patient’s condition and to make sure they get the help they need! And today I failed! The guy could sue the hospital for that! I could lose my job and-“

“Okay baby, breathe. It’ll be okay. You didn’t do anything wrong. And I’m sure Marissa agrees with me on that. You’re a good and competent nurse. Very, very overworked but nonetheless competent.”

“Marissa said the same thing.” Nao mumbled. Taking a couple of deep breaths, he finally started to calm down after his little rant. Apparently getting this off his chest was much more helpful than he had anticipated.

“She also told me to stop worrying.” Now that he was calming down all his focus shifted to his stomach. It was hurting so much he was getting nauseous and the steak in front of him made an offending sight.

“Then what the hell are you still worried about? Jesus Christ, I thought you killed someone or something like that.” Sevan laughed, gently rubbing up and down Naoko’s shoulder.

Nao joined the laughter, suddenly feeling ridiculous about his outbreak. He didn’t know either what was bothering him so much. Maybe he really was simply overworked.

Then another wave of pain made it’s way through his stomach, so intense Naoko doubled over, panting slightly.

Sevan stopped laughing immediately. “Does it hurt bad?” He asked, noting the obvious pain his boyfriend was in. Naoko has always been prone to stress-induced stomach aches, but they rarely got this bad.

Nao nodded, straightening up slightly. “Yeah, it’s kinda bad. Guess I got myself pretty worked up.” He chuckled dryly.

Sevan bit his lip. “Do you feel like you’re gonna throw up?”

Naoko didn’t really want to think about that right now but the both of them knew there was a very real chance of exactly that happening.

“Maybe, I’m not quite sure.” He stopped, considering the way he was feeling at the moment. “I do feel pretty sick.”

“Alright.” Sevan stated, rubbing his hands together. “We’re leaving.”

“No! No, I’ll be fine! We are supposed to be enjoying tonight!”

“Baby, I won’t be enjoying myself knowing you are anxious and in pain. And judging by everything that happened tonight you desperately need some sleep. Let’s go home, I’ll rub your stomach for you and hopefully put you to sleep.” Sevan said, already getting up to leave.

“That actually sounds kind of nice.” Naoko sighed a little. He’d tried to keep up a façade all evening to make sure Sevan had a great night but going to bed honestly sounded like heaven right now.

And that is how they found themselves in their car on their way home.

“I’m sorry for ruining date night. It’s gonna be a while until we’ll be able to do this again.”

Sevan looked over at his boyfriend, who fortunately seemed to be doing slightly better already. He still had a careful hand on his stomach, but he luckily had some color back to his face.

“It’s alright, I just want you to feel better. You’ve been working way too much lately so a relaxing night at home is probably good for you. Besides, every night I spent with you is date night. I don’t need fancy restaurants and expensive food to enjoy your company.”

“Aw, that was the sweetest thing you ever said to me. Turns out you do love me after all.” Naoko joked, earning himself a half-hearted slap on the shoulder.

Yes, his boyfriend really did love him.

Despite claiming he wasn't fully part of their operation, they tended to call upon Naoto for all manner of work at all times of the day; he'd much rather have spent the time with Hayato, but they hadn't eaten in two days with a lack of finances. It was necessary for him to be away if it meant allowing for younger brother to eat something, especially given the state of his wing.

--- Pushing aside the small curtain after having stopped at the convenience store, he grinned at the eager lighting of brother's hues. The exclamation and eagerness in which he spoke caused a subtle pang of guilt in the elder's heart even knowing it was for his own benefit. ' Yeah, yeah. I brought food, ya' vulture. ' he smirked, dropping the bag at the whiny nature of companion.

--- Grabby hands were yielded as Nao dropped into the bed next to him and opened the bag, producing several treats for the other; breads and snacks as well as some cup noodle that he'd heat up over candles if necessary. ' Hope you've been sleeping. You know rest is the only thing that's gonna make that better, since we can't...take you somewhere to get it looked at... ' he trailed off, shaking his head before he ruffled the younger's hair. ' Do me a favor and don't eat all of it in one go, eh? '

Yeah, I wrote something, it’s not really romantic but its mostly Katsuo being worried about Nao.

WARNING OMEGAVERSE

Katsuo knew something was wrong the day Nao presented as an omega, because, that kid was never late to morning volleyball practice nor was he never late for school. Of course, Katsuo had no idea that Nao was going through his first heat, and so his absence was terribly worrisome. What made Katsuo more anxious, was that he hadn’t heard from him all morning.

At the end of practice Katsuo sat outside the club the room waiting for a message from him or even Kin about what was going on.

“No word from Azumane?”

Katsuo looked up and saw the third year libero looking down at him. His name was Kageyama Kaito, the youngest son of two of Japan’s most powerful volleyball players. His bright orange hair was almost painful to look at but, it mirrored his sunny and optimistic personality. Despite him being an upperclassmen, Kaito didn’t really like talking to him too much, because he knew Nao had a crush on him.

Yeah, it was a petty reason to not like someone, but Katsuo didn’t care. He did value Kaito, but for his skill as a teammate and not for his friendship.

“No.” Katsuo sighed, he shook his head,“But if I don’t hear from him soon, I’ll send him a message.”

“Kaito, hurry up we’re gonna be late to class!” the captain, Kaito’s boyfriend called out to him.

“Be right there!” he shouted back, then turned his attention back to Katsuo, “You should go to class too, let me know if hear anything.”

“I will.”

Katsuo thought about skipping class for the day, he didn’t want to go to class without Nao there with him.

That was when he got the message: “I’m an omega.”

Shit.

“Don’t tell anyone.”

Katsuo skipped out of school that day, but came back for after school practice. There was no way he’d be able to focus on his school work if he was thinking about his best friend being an omega. Katsuo always thought Nao would eventually present as an alpha, all his siblings are alphas – even Kin, his twin was an alpha.

“Hey, Tanaka, did you get a call from Azumine?”

“Yeah.”

“So why isn’t here?”

“He got sick, but he’ll be back soon.”

During the entire practice, Katsuo was one hundred percent off and was asked to go home by coach Ukai. It was embarrassing, he already knew he wasn’t the best player and now he was being asked to go. As Katsuo left campus, he pulled out his phone called Nao, but his parents answered instead.

“Nao’s sleeping.” Nishinoya explained, “But you’re more than welcome to come visit him.”

“Um, no thank you.” Katsuo declined, “His smell, you know. Um, will he be at school tomorrow?” “I think so.”

“Okay, um, thank you.”

The following day, Nao returned to school, although, he looked tired and was moving a little more slow than usual. Katsuo kept his eyes on him, he wanted to make sure he didn’t overwork himself  and he also wanted to see if there was any changes. Although physical differences between omega and alpha were subtle, they still existed. Like the width of hips.

But as far as Katsuo could tell, nothing had changed. Nao still looked like Nao, with his lean but solid frame, his bruised up arms, and that yellow patch of dyed hair over his right eye. His hair was getting long –

A ball smashed Katsuo in the face, disrupting his thoughts, and at the same time Nao tripped over his own shoelaces and collided with the floor.

“Nao, Katsuo!” coach Ukai called, “If you two don’t start focusing, I’ll dismiss the both of you!”

With the threat of being dismissed dangling over them, Nao and Katsuo tried to redirect their focus – although, Nao wasn’t having a hard time focusing but rather, he just couldn’t bring up his energy level. Despite his lethargy, he managed to stay in the entirety of morning practice.

The two of them made it to the classroom, and instead of mingling with the other kids as he usually does Nao went straight for his desk and set his head down. He wanted a nap, his whole body felt sore, especially his hips and lower back.

Katsuo fanned a hand over Nao’s back, “I made something for you.” he spoke in a low soft tone.

It was strange to hear Katsuo speaking so quietly, he only did so when he was worried about something. If Nao hadn’t been feeling so bad, he would have teased Katsuo about how he was speaking, but instead all he managed to say was, “Hm?”

“I’ve heard that, um,” Katsuo glanced around, checking if anyone was listing, he didn’t want to call Nao an omega in public, “That during that thing that happened to you yesterday, you know, that it makes you hungry and so I made you something to eat.”

Hearing the word food brought up Nao’s attention, “You did?”

“Yeah, but it’s probably cold by now,.” Katsuo set a lunchbox on Nao’s desk, and opened it, “I rolled up some rice in seaweed, and um, I made some toast, and an apple – I didn’t make the apple it was already made but I put it in the box.”

Nao smiled and it was beautiful.

Katsuo hadn’t seen Nao smile all morning, it made his heart flutter as he came to the realization that he was the first one to make the new omega smile that day.

“Sit down with me, let’s share.”
