How would the chocobros react to finding out their s/o went out and got themselves a set of hunters tags without them knowing? Aka they find them in their belongings or on their person unexpectedly etc.

This took forever to answer, haha. Goodness gracious. Sorry for the absolute radio silence, I’ve been doing a shitton of stuff. I moved into my college dorm last week, the first day of classes was a couple days ago, I’ve been a busy bee. I actually stayed up kinda late to write this. 

Anyways, I meshed together two requests for this one and also lowkey made it OT4+1, so there’s that. I hope this isn’t terrible, enjoy!

When Noctis accepted that hunt, immediately you know something terrible was bound to happen. It was a hunch, or maybe a gut feeling – either way, you knew. You said as much to the others in your group, and while Prompto reluctantly agreed with you, Ignis disagreed with you, and that pretty much settled things. If Ignis had no reason to be concerned, then why did you? Besides, you could always do with some extra money lining your pockets.

As it would seem, things were not as simple as anticipated. Your gut feeling was right.

You all managed to fell the beast, but the triumph was not without a price. Ignis had a nasty wound in his side, and it was practically all you could do to stop the bleeding and get him stitched up. Prompto’s hands were practically out of commission with how much damage they’d taken from the excessive recoil of his guns and he might have been dealing with a minor concussion. Noctis could barely move on his own, the sheer amount of magic used in the battle taking its toll on his already-tired body and sending jolt after jolt of pain through him with every breath. Gladio had dislocated his shoulder and his body was positively covered in bruises. He already had a new set of scars forming on his skin. You left the battle with a few broken ribs and a severe gash across the bridge of your nose from an attack that nearly took your eye out. Doubtlessly, it would become a scar.

You all immediately fled to the nearest hotel for some much-needed rest and recovery. You were going to lose some days, perhaps more than a week, but there was no choice. None of you were in any condition to travel, and if you got attacked on the road, you’d be dead meat.

It was during this time that you sought out Dave. Luckily for you, he happened to be nearby, and you made your request to him. The expression on his face was solemn, but he fulfilled it with little fanfare.

The very next day, you had yourself a set of hunter’s tags. Logically, you knew that they were small things made out of a lightweight material, but you couldn’t help but feel an extreme heaviness as you looped the chain around your neck. It was like having the weight of your own soul settled on top of your chest. At first, it was heavy and oppressive and you almost felt like you were suffocating, but in a few days’ time, it was a comforting weight grounding you to reality.

Perhaps you should have anticipated that the others would not feel the same about your decision.

You woke up that morning and immediately figured something was very wrong, but for the wrong reasons – Noctis was awake and very coherent and alert before you were. It was either a miracle or serious trouble. It was the latter.

Gladio held your tags up, and realization washed over your face. 

“Oh,” you said rather dumbly, unable to come up with anything else.

“Yeah, oh,” Noctis responded, his lips downturned in a small frown.

You sat up, running a hand over your face and taking a deep breath. You hadn’t ever planned on broaching this subject with them, and even if you had, this certainly isn’t how you would have done it. Your gaze trailed over each of their expressions before you spoke, your brain still not entirely together. “You’re not… mad, are you?”

“Definitely not happy,” Gladio replied, and before you had a chance to mutter something out in exchange, Prompto spoke up.

“Why did you get those?” he paused, then continued in a softer, weaker tone, “And why didn’t you tell us?”

You opened your mouth, then closed it again, frowning. The room remained silent while you tried to collect your thoughts. “That hunt we did…” you began slowly, “It made me realize my own mortality. I mean, I already knew it–” You cut yourself off with a huff and a shake of your head, then started again. “What would you guys do if I died? What should I do if you died? When I go, I want to leave something behind – something more than just a memory, something tangible.” You motioned to the tags still resting in Gladio’s hand. “And those? Those are all I have going for me.”

“You think you’re going to die?” Prompto asked, voice soft and wispy and purposefully leaving out the ‘unexpectedly and tragically,’ as if he was afraid of what your answer would be.

“Of course I do. You guys don’t?” You were met with silence, which answered the question on its own. “Okay. Well, I know I will, eventually,” you replied, fidgeting with your hands, “What I’m talking about is the cause of death. Don’t you ever think about that, how you’re gonna die? Like, will it be poison, or an Iron Giant, or just a split-second, stupid decision? Old age, a garula, or a heart attack? It’s scary shit. And those tags, they represent me, once I’m no longer here to speak for myself. I want to be able to leave something behind.” Your voice shook. “I can’t stand the thought of being forgotten, especially by you guys. It’s… scary.”

The room was silent for a long moment after your admission, and you wrung your hands anxiously as you waited for anyone to say anything.

Finally, after being silent the entire time, Ignis spoke, leaning forward with a small frown on his face. “You mean so much more to us than these pieces of metal. You realize this, right?” He took the tags from Gladio and handed them back to you, a solemn expression on his face. “We won’t take them from you if they truly make you feel more secure, but please know that nothing tangible could replace the memory of you, and nothing short of death could take you from our minds. You’re more than these tags.”

Ignis’ words warmed your chest, as always, but still… the tags. You slipped the chain back around your neck and wrapped a hand securely around the tags, taking a deep breath, closing your eyes. More than your tags. You were more than your tags. 

Right?

Noctis, noticing your distress, moved closer and wrapped an arm around you, pulling you from your trance. He caught your gaze and held it, speaking with a gentle voice. “Think of your tags as a promise instead of a death sentence. Like… a promise that you’ll try your best to not die. A promise that you’ll give your enemies hell. A promise that you’ll stay here, with us. A promise that you’ll live.” He smiled, taking your hand and squeezing it.

“As for your question,” Gladio rumbled from his spot across the room, “If any of us were to die, the best the rest of us can do is move on. The world won’t stop spinning, so we can’t stop moving forward. We’ll hold our memories of them close to our hearts and continue with their sacrifice in mind.” He folded his arms, his gaze steady on yours. “It’s not the tags that will help us remember you. We have each other for that. In our memories, you’re immortal.”

Prompto let out a chuckle, a sunny grin climbing onto his face. “Besides, we couldn’t forget you even if we tried. The tags are a nice and kinda morbid touch, but you won’t need them around us. We’ve all got you right here,” he pressed his finger against his temple, “and right here.” He slapped his hand against his chest, his smile softening. “You’re good to go.”

Your eyes burned and you blinked back the tears. “Thanks, guys.”

You continued to wear the tags, however, even after that conversation. They weren’t a reminder of your mortality anymore, though – no, they served as a promise. A promise to Noct, to Ignis, to Gladio, to Prompto, to everyone else you cared about, that you’d fight, and you’d live to fight another day. A promise for the future.

Season 3 notes popping off

due to my desire to not completely fail all my classes this year i made myself slow down significantly while listening to this season, and the fact that the other person i'm listening along with had to catch up. We've managed to convert several other people to start listening and its pretty great.

ep 81: what does it even mean to be chosen by one of them? And if he was chosen by the eye. we know Gertrude wasnt? Because she cut the eyes out of the magazines?

ep 82: elias lmao. I understand why people like him so much bahshdhdk i thought he was gonna snitch on Jon but he didnt so he's fine. Ok but how do we think he knew all that stuff. Idk probably just institute connections. I love the fact that the recorder just wants to record stuff randomly bjahsjdhd. Elias feels a lot like Michael in the sense that he knows more than he should and talks in a way that implies he just wants to wait and see how things play out for his own benefit. I understand him knowing the things that happened but his description of her emotions implies something paranormal. Maybe he's connected to one of the entities. Which one I cannot guess.

ep 83: did a file get delivered randomly to the place he's staying at? Probably elias lmao. He thinks the mannequin is related to the stranger. Idk I would believe it.

ep 84: worms? I know he says earth worms but idk. Again? Is she making gordon golems out of trash? Martin popping off. You can tell the statements get to him more that they get to Jon. How come martin is so mad about it? I want to assume he just doesnt want her to get stuck there but idk. Jude Perry. The calliope organ. Jon heard a circus in one of the last episodes

Elias ur sounding like a bit of a dickhead rn. lmao jon's just like "i dont care" elias what is ur deal. Why does he want to tie her in. ohh i see. lmao theyre all just like "elias why" The Unknowing lol seems very much like something the eye wouldnt like. lol elias is gettin all philosophical. what does it really mean to be human. this still doesnt answer why gertrude wanted to destroy the archives tho.

I think the funniest explanation for breacon and hope is that they dont actually serve the stranger they just kinda happen to be a random neutral party that cart around random spooky entity related stuff. ooooh. when we hear the slight static of the tape recorder it's cuz he's compelling ppl.

ok im just putting this here so i have notes for when nicholas gets to this part. It seems like (from jon's conversation with jude perry) that the desolation and the eye are kinda at odds with eachother? like i guess not directly but it seems like they dont really vibe? so how could be with both. Cuz if he has the heat powers and shit then we know he's an avatar of the desolation. but then why does he have so much eye imagery. also he got burned intentionally? like jude did when she went on her monologue about the feeling of burning? but then why did he wear the eye pendant. it stops him from being burned all the way which seems like he's not fully accepting the fire or whatever.
