#doktor faustus #hot faust summer #i'm already primed not to read the protagonist's character arc as a straight up allegory #(the main character of the novel basically invents the 12-tone technique which is all about subverting tonality #i.e. there is no one tone that is the focal point of the scale or the melody or the piece)#but of course this is not where musical theory was in the 1940s #theodor adorno was the musical consultant on this and he was pro-12-tone and embarrassingly anti-jazz #so #¯\_(ツ)_/¯
