Oh hard core agree. I can't tell you how baffling it was begging for people to actually read the source material in animanga fandoms because they would just go on trashing on the heroes and simping for the villains and making up false crimes characters didn't even do, then walking into LMK and it was the exact opposite. Everyone is obsessed with the source material, they HATE the villain. What the pepperoni. Seeing people go "well of course Wukong hates Mac what did he expect when he killed and ate a monkey and stole stuff" he didn't do SQUAT. And just because LMK combined demons with Brotherhood characters of similar names doesn't mean they were the same character in JTTW so seeing THAT and the assumptions people bring from that is. huh. I think JTTW is too advance a book for the 14 year old age demographic LMK attracts. I'd also like to study this wild phenomenon of villain redemption demands because nobody complained about Red Son and it makes me laugh everytime someone says "Macaque needs to show more actual want to change" like, fam. Maybe if he was an actual villain to BEGIN WITH instead of *checks note* a one off instance of villainy where all he did was fight Wukong post-stealing MK's powers and be a bullying jerk, another instance of ambiguous LBD warning and trauma projecting lore dumping, and then a following season of being an unwilling henchman who kept telling us 50 times he didn't want to do this, that LBD forced it bc he "already had a taste of dying" and just wanting to be free of it and never talk to MK and his friends again *points very deliberately at the "and then I'm done with you all." line. Pretty dang hard for a character to pull things out of a hat to convince others that "they no longer have those motives and desires" when they didn't have them in the first place. Love the way you're calling out the Bull Fam and Tripitaka those are so trueeee. Zhu Bajie too lmao. My thoughts exactly. Twinkle toes over there is going to be a fun character to witness when we get context on the "Monkey! No violence!" line in LMK. And by character, I mostly mean the fandom response.

I can spend all day listing how much almost all the villains hold MK responsible for Wukong’s actions nearly 90% of the time or at least shit on him all because he’s Wukong’s successor.

But that’ll take literally all day…

It’s also the same with Every SINGLE inaccuracy in LMK that gets glossed over because every single fan’s bias of certain things.

Like you can condemn Macaque and make him all villainy but what about Zhu Bajie? Or Tripitaka? One of the reasons I dislike Zhu Bajie is because not only did he not change he was a pervert. I really disliked him for that. But it looks like LMK COMPLETELY changed that because we barely see any mention of his wife and the flashbacks show that Wukong met him in the same village Tang, MK and Mei were in. So clearly there has been a change. But I barely see hate for Bajie about it because half the fandom villainizes Tripitaka already for not disciplining him as much as Wukong.

If you want to acknowledge how Macaque was in JTTW you also have to acknowledge EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in the JTTW. If that’s how you really want it to go.

One thing I think would be the reason as to why the whole ‘Macaque cannibalized one of Wukong’s grandchildren’ was changed is because Macaque and Wukong KNEW EACH OTHER before the Journey. It is also implied that Macaque has been with Wukong the longest, (In the context of Shadow Play) and it is implied that he possibly resided or at least stayed in FFM. Which meant that Macaque is also attached to the Monkeys. Remember: Macaque’s motive is to hurt Wukong and only Wukong. Which is why he goes after MK because he knows that will hurt Wukong. But if he is attached to Wukong’s grandchildren and has lived with Wukong it’s also gonna hurt Macaque if he killed them. (Though Macaque is not overly affectionate like Wukong, the fact that the monkeys trust him enough to literally sit on top of any part of him they can sit on proves that Macaque did tend to them while Wukong was away.)

The only reason I can think that Wukong hates him is because of Tripitaka and the whole ‘using Wukong’s face’ jig.

Macaque can canonically pretend to be Wukong, he did so with MK in Season 2 and did trick Wukong into thinking he was MK in Season 1. There is a likelihood that the whole ‘pretending to be Wukong’ still happened in LMK.

Remember: In the Flashbacks of Macaque and Wukong’s confrontation, there is no circlet on Wukong’s head. This is further confirmed in Season 3 during the Samadhi Fire arc. In the Amnesia episode, Wukong confirms they are still in the Journey AFTER the Samadhi Fire was sealed (Because he said Four Rings which means the Samadhi Fire was sealed in rings already) And notice in the flashback when they were sealing the Samadhi Fire, Wukong doesn’t have his circlet, compared to the flashback with Azure where he DOES have a Circlet. No matter if Macaque’s flashback was faked, it does confirm that after some time, Tripitaka trusted Wukong enough that he removed the Circlet.

Which possibly means that Tripitaka and Wukong grew to have a mutual understanding of each other. Till Macaque showed up and proceeded to ruin everything.

So yeah if you need a reason as to why Wukong hated Macaque there’s a possibility it wasn’t about cannibalism in the context of LMK.

Feels good to have a normal week again tho the next one is gonna be few manga again WEH I didn't plan on watching a lot of stuff this season, like I had mentioned before, but ended up putting more stuff on my list to "check it out at least" in the end (including Sorairo and Zenshu, and more next week) cause they caught my eye for one reason or another. FSF is a weird inclusion since we got ep1 as a special early screening while the full thing is gonna come later in the but would feel weird not to put it here now, but anyway

Fate/strange Fake Ep1

There wasn't any crazy sakuga like in the special from last year but it was a great first episode with the art and direction being just as strong. If they keep this up through the whole show, which I assume will be the case, then it'll be an amazing adaptation. Kinda annoying that even after a year we still don't have an actual air date but when the ep released the official twitter said that the "main broadcast" would air in 2025 so I will be patiently waiting for that 🙏

Sorairo Utility Ep1

This wasn't on my radar to watch this season but when looking at my schedule site earlier this week I decided to take a look at any shows I wasn't planning on watching, just in case there would be something I'd be interested in. In other seasons I've done that too and ended up watching stuff I didn't expect and enjoying them so eh why not right Went in expecting a Cute Girls Doing Cute Things show about golf and... that's exactly what it was lol. The animation wasn't super fancy but the art is good and the characters are very expressive which is what you want for this kind of show anyway Was gonna watch just the first few eps of this to decide if I would keep up with it, but I am a sucker for CGDCT at the end of the day so I'll watch everything after all

Blue Exorcist S5: Blue Night Arc Ep1

Well here we are again already. It's kinda weird that it wasn't even a split cour but they made the decision to make these two clearly separate sesons. It makes sense cause of what they're covering but it'd be like if One Piece had like 20 differents seasons cause of all the arcs it has Anyway, it wasn't bad ofc, just more of the same quality we've come to expect from the more recent seasons. My friend Mega had praised the ep so I was expecting a bit more but he's more biased since he's caught up with the manga. I'll be looking forward to learning more about mom and dad, tho it'll be sad seeing her suffer

Zenshu Ep1

Decided to watch this cause I saw it was a MAPPA original and the synopsis but I didn't expect it to be a full blown isekai. I know it says on it that she goes into this world but I thought it'd be like Sasaki & Peeps where it's going back and forth. Anyway, it's got a lot of polish as you'd expected from the studio. Animation was just above average the whole way with the exception of the magical girl like sequence near the end. I also really like the thing that she drew actually looking like a storyboard, even having animation notes around it and everything. Just like Sorairo up there I was gonna watch the first few to decide but was pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed MAPPA's previous original, Bucchigiri, enough that I'll stick with this one too

Just speechless It's even more fucked up cause either the previous chap or 2 or 3 ago I was talking about how there could possibly be a timeskip but I didn't think it would happen cause of this that or the other.. and then they just dropped this. Like I said in one of the recent times I talked about Akane, they always manage to surprise me when I think I have the series figured out and this is just another great example of that I can't can't CAN'T wait to see older Akane in a couple weeks 😭🙏

There's a whole sub-genre going on of "yuusha discriminated against by their own people, joins the demon kingdom", multiple sub-genres of "set from the point of view of the demon kingdom (and their king) in the first place", and even Danmachi had an entire arc questioning the (assumed lack of) sentience of monsters spawning in the Dungeon.

Hell, animangnoveltoons actually seem more likely than Western fiction to do half-assed fantasy racism storylines. By the numbers, I'd guess that there are probably far more shows in the last decade NOT doing "unquestioned inherently evil race" than there are. Certainly there are way more "the demons are the protagonists" cases than Western fiction, something something related to the ambiguity in how concepts of demons/hell differs in Asia (e.g. Houzuki no Reitetsu) something something

I don't have a Frieren point to this, but it is worth noting how "they are on the main fine with evil races" has dimensions.

Not really sure what the "but" is doing there, since I certainly never said otherwise - I CERTAINLY never said a single thing about % of shows have a given trope. But yes, once you separate out the western moral debate around Evil Orcs, when it isn't about "is it an actual, real-life sin to make this writing choice", then almost by structural necessity you get a million different takes on the topic; its no longer reduced down to it. Hell is anime, the most common take on any trope X is going to in some way involve "can I fuck it?" - its why the demons in Frieren are still mainly hot humanlikes after all. The isekai genre in particular is very interested in the "meta" of video game tropes, which almost always include enemies you fight, and so has gone to town on playing with every variation of how your slimes or orcs or undead or demons relate to society, to PCs, etc.

Frieren definitely does slot into this wider milieu. At the start of this thread, our OP remarked that people talked about Frieren like it was "subversive" in some way. That idea is silly of course, but I think it is fair to say that lighthearted fantasy anime has become the mainstream in the past few years, a lot more comedy hijinks stuff was big. Even Mushoku Tensei, which is intensely detailed on worldbuilding and "realism tone", still has its other 50% being harem comedy shit. Frieren's success probably does have something to do with its level of seriousness (which isn't 100% of course, just margins) being undersupplied recently, and so the people who wanted that back are vocally happy about it. This goes far beyond the demons of course, but they are a part of that - Frieren as a character has a hard-nosed maturity to her in her battle-earned ruthlessness. Again, a common trope, just you know few big fantasy shows of 2022-2023 had them I don't think, as those cycles go.

I can't say I've been a HUGE Dabi fan, I mean I've always really liked him and I think he's always been my fave of the League, but I've never spent a whole ton of time delving into his character. but he's really started growing more on me recently! same with Hawks actually, back when he was first introduced I was kinda like "oh yeah he's cool and stuff" but nothing really stood out to me, but over time I just really started appreciating him more and he's definitely one of my faves now! honestly, I'm quite behind on the manga (although I've been keeping up with major story developments via tumblr lmao) but I think Dabi and Hawks are one of the bigger reasons I want to get caught back up... Bakugou has always been a fave of mine and his character development still really stands out to me and I think it's some of the best in the series, and I also really love Midoriya and All Might and honestly the relationship between those three has always hit a real soft spot for me.

I'm trying to get back into BNHA because I do still really enjoy it and I still love the characters, but I did really fall out of keeping up with it. x_x talking about it with you is a lot of fun though!! makes me wanna go catch up right now haha

HAHA the biggest hurdle for starting One Piece, is...literally starting 😂 and that was my problem for the longest time. Once you're in there you don't really think about it being so long, the characters have so much to love and the adventure is SO good, you just hope it never ends lol. It's pretty casual to begin and it's lighthearted so its nice to just wind down with me for lol, watch like a few here and there. Until you hit the point of pure screaming bcus the plot HITS SO HARD and you just have to know what happens next!! But for me that's one of the best parts too-- being able to binge heavily and still know there's more to look forward to. :'D I started like back in June and only have like 300ish episodes left 😭 so tbh I slowed down and took a break bcus I was sad to catch up lol. If you ever just give it a try instead of thinking of it as a long commitment, you might be pleasantly surprised. 😆

tbh I wouldn't even say I'm "trying" to watch anything this season lmao I gave up trying to keep up a very long time ago. the only one I even remotely tried keeping up with was Spy x Family, but even that one I fell behind on after a few episodes despite how much I enjoy the series. I'll definitely catch up with that one once the season is done airing though.

yeah Christmas music is such an important part of the season for me but I have a pretty specific taste in that genre of music haha which I why I have a playlist. living in a place that gets lots of snow can be really nice because it's so pretty and it makes the Christmas season even better, but it can definitely be a huge hindrance too for sure. we hardly ever got significant snowfall back where I grew up, so white Christmases were never really a thing when I was a kid so it's been nice to have them as an adult~

I mean, I struggle to even watch the shorter stuff that's been on my to-watch list for YEARS so I honestly doubt One Piece will ever happen for me. xD but hey, who knows! I know plenty of people who absolutely love it, and my brother also enjoys it, so who knows what the future will bring haha.

Oh hell yeah, all your HQ favs are my favs too!! lol. Hinata is a complete sunshine and literally deserves everything good in the world. I think he's so motivational and really makes you feel like you can do anything haha. And Kageyama was my love at first sight in HQ bcus I have a type and his misunderstood personality speaks to me alsjdkkdd lol. I also love his character development a lot. And Kuroo, his personality, his looks...he's perfect. I also predictably loved that Kuroo's VA in japanese is also Hawks'. ^^ And Nishinoya is just so damn cool and reliable, he's the best! Anyways I really love almost everyone in HQ tho, sports anime always makes me feel that way lol. Idk if you've seen Run with the Wind, but it reminds me a lot of HQ too, so I highly recommend. It's only one season and the main character is such a Kageyama clone too but the story is very satisfying. 💛

I love their tragic pasts bound by duty, the way they grew up how no one should've, their personality and need to be free, I love that they never give up and their dynamics with each other. SNK's plot of no clear cut black and white of villains, but watching Eren go from hero to antihero, was incredibly interesting. And at the end of the day, despite what he does is unforgiveably wrong...he just wanted to protect the people most important to him and its really an impossible choice. And Levi is one of the biggest badass so I liked him instantly. When you think super cool character, its easily him!! But you also learn his mistakes, his flaws, his emotions that crack through his inital cold exterior when he's anything but. And like that just makes me feel things, they're both very much human with the weight of too much on their shoulders despite the monsters they're described to be. So I have a very soft spot for them even though I don't paritucularly enjoy the fandom anymore (it turned too toxic). 😅

Besides the favs I mentioned on my last ask, hmm to expand on some of them, one of the reason I like Trafalgar Law from One Piece is because he reminds me a LOT of Levi tbh lolol 😉. The tragic past, the personality, the way he's so damn cool when he fights ...and they even have the same VA too. 😂

Anyways!! OH MAN, my thoughts on Hawks and Endeavor..hahah. So I don't like Endeavor at all, but I also don't really think about him much and it doesn't bother me that Hawks is there and interacts with him in the plot because to me it speaks volumes about Hawks' character and not Endeavor. I know there's a lot of people mad that we don't see Hawks react negatively to the situation after Dabi's broadcast. But I also think people have to realize they're in the middle of literal war. Hawks, who has always been manipulated, conditioned and grew up in non conventional ways, who had probably never processed anything in his life—from his personal abuse from his parents and HSPC to what he had to do as a solider and probably a lot more if we look at Lady Nagants' hints, I think hes very good at ignoring his own feelings. He's the fastest hero literally also because I think he never takes a moment to stop, to breathe. He's always in fight for survival mode, he's always trying to do the next thing, to "be of use" (and I think after being told "what use are you" as a kid, he can't help but do this) and it shows. Even when we see him after the injures from Dabi, he's barely recovered but he's already up and about without his voice before, and now with prosthetic wings on a battlefield with the main villain. He'll really do anything including shoving his own feelings away if it means helping everyone else and he's just doing what he's always been taught to do—focus on the mission (AFO in this case). Given the war, of course he still helps Endeavor fight. But beyond that I think he says if he wants to change he'll help is because think about it -- Hawks own parents never did this. He never got answers, he never got any form of redemption from them, they never so much as apologized or recognized him in his entire life. So seeing Endeavor trying to do that? I think Hawks is very much projecting himself into Todorokis family, because he never had someone even try in his own family to reconcile on him. And he himself feels like *he's* the one that turned his back on his parents, when it was obviously the other way around. There's a lot of complicated layers and history that I think people have to understand about Hawks that makes him do what he does. I of course would LOVE to see him break down and react to everything that's ever happened to him and I hope they'll show it, but we'll see. I like mostly of where the plot is and I think there's still room for a lot of what's to come including Hawks changing/processing everything.

I feel like there will be a breaking point soon, where the "old" heroes and society will see how they've been wrong all along. It's not heroes vs. villains when a lot of the villains have been mistreated and discarded by society. I very much think the theme here is, changing and helping people like Toga, Dabi. Shigaraki who was not inherently evil the way AFO is. And that includes Hawks changing, consequences for Endeavor (I hope, after this basially apocalypse theyre fighting to end.) That's my thoughts anyways lol.
