I Love You, Honeybear
Mascara, blood
Ash and cum
On the Rorschach sheets where we make love
Fuck the world damn straight malaise
It may be just us who feel this way
But don't ever doubt this, my steadfast conviction
My love, you're the one I want to watch the ship go down with
The future can't be real, I barely know how long a moment is
Unless we're naked getting high on the mattress
As death fills the streets you grab my hand and say
In I-told-you-so voice
"It's just how we expected."
I've brought my mother's depression
You've got your father's scorn and a wayward aunt's schizophrenia
But everything is fine
Don't give into despair
Cause I love you, honeybear

You're bent over the altar And the neighbors are complaining that the misanthropes next door Are probably conceiving a Damien Don't they see the darkness rising? Good luck fingering oblivion We're getting out now while we can You're welcome boys, have the last of the smokes and chicken Just one Cadillac will do to get us out to where we're going I've brought my mother's depression You've got your father's scorn and a wayward aunt's schizophrenia

I love you, Honeybear an examination
I thought for this post we could evaluate a part of pop culture and whether it it reinforces old stereotypes or concludes more positively.  The song I copied and pasted is from Father John Misty’s I love you, Honeybear album with song titled the same.
[Verse 1]
Oh, honeybear, honeybear, honeybear
Mascara, blood, ash and cum
On the Rorschach sheets where we make love
Honeybear, honeybear, honeybear (oooh ooh oooh)
You fuck the world damn straight malaise
It may be just us who feel this way
But don't ever doubt this, my steadfast conviction
My love, you're the one I want to watch the ship go down with
The future can't be real, I barely know how long a moment is
Unless we're naked, getting high on the mattress
While the global market crashes
As death fills the streets we're garden-variety oblivious
You grab my hand and say in an "I told you so" voice:
"It’s just how we expected"
 [Chorus]
Everything is doomed
And nothing will be spared
But I love you, honeybear
Honeybear, honeybear, honeybear
 [Verse 2]
You're bent over the altar
And the neighbors are complaining
That the misanthropes next door
Are probably conceiving a Damien
Don't they see the darkness rising?
Good luck fingering oblivion
We're getting out now while we can
You're welcome boys, have the last of the smokes and chicken
Just one Cadillac will do to get us out to where we're going
I've brought my mother's depression
You've got your father's scorn and a wayward aunt's schizophrenia
 [Chorus]
But everything is fine
Don't give into despair
Cause I love you, honeybear
Honeybear, honeybear, honeybear
I am not totally sure what to make of Father John Misty’s obscure references to “wayward aunt schizophrenia”.  It seems to me he is painting a picture a couple that reviled by the people that surround them as the world falls apart.  The characters in this song could just have the more negative aspects of schizophrenia but not necessarily schizophrenia.  I would prefer her to just have schizophrenia which she may very well have schizophrenia.  The song ends with “Don’t give into despair/Cause I love you, honeybear.” For me I keep going back and forth between the person he is singing about is something detested by society.  I think sometimes if I were to reveal my illness I would be detested like the person in this song.  At the least, when people find out that I have thought disorder my thoughts could easily be valued less than someone that does not have it.
I think certain aspects of the song like “And the neighbors are complaining” the song makes me feel the like people written about are also misunderstood.  What brings the most vivid of imagery is the line “misanthropes” next door are creating a Damien.  I feel this way a lot.  I hate those that will deride me.  When Josh Tillman or Father John Misty wrote this song he might have not intended it to be a song about mental illness but the imagery that surrounds the characteristically hated and feared characters reminds me a lot of my own experience. As the mentally ill are blamed for all shootings even though close examinations of the shooters most have nothing.   Most studies even show that we are more likely to be the victims of crimes rather than the perpetrators.
What do you think about the song?
