|Chapter 18 | Find Your Way Back
This past week had been relatively stress free after committing to the homework Dr. Mitchell doled out in our session. Outside of work I didn’t do anything that I did not have to do which meant I took time off from the gym and a break from helping out with Granddad. I needed a full break away from everyone. It wasn’t until this assignment that I realized that I was always on go, always running around, or exerting energy in some form. I had forgotten what it was like to be still and pour into myself. In this moment of stillness I found that what I really needed was to grieve. I needed to grieve Sabrina, who Grandad was, and who I used to be. I needed to grieve so that I could make space for the person I am now.
My eyes travel back to my phone for the umpteenth time in the last twelve hours. I know Mila read my text because she hearted it but I have yet to receive a written or verbal response from her. The heart was a good sign yet it wasn’t enough. I needed more because I missed the hell out of her. Did she miss me the same way? Right as I was about to pick up the device again to craft another message, the sound of my door opening followed by footsteps, caused me to stand up. It didn’t take long to see who was barging into my apartment unannounced.
“We let you have your lil Eat, Pray, Love moment but enough. We are going to watch this game and eat some wings,” Aiden said, as he sauntered past the entryway armed with bags. Rah trailed behind him holding a case of beer.
“Bro, that key is for emergencies,” I said, shaking my head at them.
“It is an emergency. When was the last time you took a shower?” Aiden shouted over his shoulder, as he continued making his way towards the kitchen.
Okay, he had me there. I hadn’t actually left my apartment in the past three days and depression has a way of making you break routine. A quick lift of my arms, let me know that I needed to fix that immediately.
“Aight, it’s been awhile but I’ma get on it. Use coasters please,” I said, as I began walking towards the bathroom.
“You might want to tighten up that hairline while you at it,” Rah said, making a clipper motion with his hands.
“Fuck y’all,” I chuckled.
“And hurry up funky, we hungry!” Aiden yelled, over the sound of clattering plates and my drawers being yanked open with more force than necessary. I shook my head as I proceeded to the bathroom deciding not to prolong the journey by responding to him.
It takes me about forty minutes to shape up my hairline and then shower. When I saunter back into the living room it’s to a round of applause.
“Aye man, fuck y’all,” I chuckle, as I reach for a wing.
They had made use of one of the big bowls my mother insisted I would need one day and poured all of the wings into them. Beside that bowl was a plate full of fries and another of onion rings. There was also a box of pizza that Rah was currently inhaling half of.
“What y’all niggas been up to besides breaking and entering?” I ask, as I sit down on the other end of the couch.
“Nothing but the usual. This nigga need help with a proposal to Keisha but I told him that’s your lane,” Aiden said, eyes trained on the game on the TV like he didn’t just announce something important.
“Oh shit, you ready to propose? It’s about time,” I said, looking over at Rah.
“Yeah man I know, I’ve been ready but now it feels like we’re both on the same page,” Rah says with a small smile.
“I’m happy for you bro. She’s definitely going to say yes,” I said.
“Duh, they've been together forever,” Aiden tosses in.
We both give him a side eye that he doesn’t see because his glance hasn’t left the game and won’t. Shaking my head I continue, “Aight, let me hear your ideas so I can tell you if they’re good or not.”
For the next hour we bounce ideas back and forth until we get the best proposal plan that encompasses both Rah and Keisha as a couple. In a month’s time, he will be popping the big question and I couldn’t be more happy for them. Once that’s squared away, Aiden insists that we head out to a few bars to celebrate the fact that the Nets won. However, I’m not ready to be out and about just yet so I send them on their way after they make me swear to show up to the gym this week.
The moment I think I am about to get some peace after the guys leave, my phone starts to ring. I instantly reach for it hoping it’s Mila but when I see who it actually is, I freeze for a moment. The name ‘Pops’ flashes across my screen with a picture of us from my college graduation. It was a day neither of us thought I would see so we were especially happy to celebrate the occasion together. It rings out three more times but instead of answering, I watch it go to voicemail. He might be ready to talk but I’m not. Tossing my phone to the side, I’m on my way to the kitchen to get a drink when there’s a knock on the door. I swing it open without looking because I assume the boys forgot something but I’m in shock when I see who it is.
With her hair freshly braided and dressed in a cream sweater dress, Mila stands before me shyly. My eyes trace over her frame, it’s been so long since I’ve seen her in person that I instantly want to take in what’s been missed. It seems she is doing the same because when our eyes meet once more, a blush takes over her cheeks.
“Hi,” she says softly.
“Hi,” I replied.
“May I come in?” she asks.
“Of course, my bad, come, come,” I said, moving back so that she could enter the apartment. I have never been more thankful for the boy's intrusion like I am now because if she decided to pop up a few hours ago I would have been looking rough. I follow behind her until we’re both standing toe to toe in the living room. We resume eyeing each other again. There are oceans of words between us but none of them compare to the three that have been swirling in my mind nonstop since opening the door. She opens her mouth to speak but I beat her to it. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too. More than you know.”
That’s all we both need to hear before enveloping each other in a hug. I wrap my arms around her waist tightly and she squeezes my shoulders to bring me closer. It takes everything in me not to hoist her into my arms. As badly as I want to, I know there are things that need to be said before we fall back into each other. She nuzzles her face in my chest and inhales deeply. I rub her back slowly as she gathers her thoughts. After a few moments she says, “I’m sorry to pop up but I feel like I owed you an in person apology. I took my past out on you and that was so unfair.”
“Mila I’m s-
“No, let me finish,” she said, tipping her head back so that our eyes could meet. Her brown eyes were already glazed over with tears begging to spring free. “I have not had the easiest life and because of that it’s so hard for me to trust people. Like unbelievably fucking hard. Then you came along and made me question everything I thought I knew. You gave me the ability to open up and I have never felt so seen. I have never felt so free.”
The tears that she had been holding back crash down onto her cheeks but instead of hiding her face like usual she bares them for me to see. “What Trevor did to me…made me feel like the woman I was before you. Scared and angry. Beyond angry and when I saw you, in a way I was mad that without you around I couldn’t be free. That wasn’t right to put on you and it took me some time and therapy,” she said with a sly grin causing us to both chuckle. It was only a few months ago that she had been adamant about not talking to anyone. The strides she has taken in our weeks apart makes me so proud.“...to realize that I can’t rest my freedom or happiness on your shoulders. I have to own that for myself or else I’m always going to be left to pick up the pieces”.
Leaning down, I press my lips softly against hers, no longer able to resist the urge. “Thank you,” I say against her lips. “While that is true, I need you to know that I am here for you, to support your happiness and aid in it. To protect you. To cherish you. To love you because I do love you and I’m in love with you Jamila Cortez.”
“I’m in love with you-
I swallow the rest of her confession with my tongue. The last of my restraint has vanished with those five words. She mewls as I finally give into my other urge and hoist her into my arms. Her hands raise from my shoulders to cup my face as I continue to devour her lips. As we kiss, I can feel the color slip back into my life. That’s how vibrant she is, how potent. We end up against the wall, breathing heavy as my lips move from her lips to the hollows of her throat. She smells of jasmine and promise, I sink my teeth in and am rewarded with a guttural moan. The kind that can only be elicited when two people know without a shadow of a doubt that their kindred spirit is present.
We become an endeavor of sloppy movements fueled by an urgency to reunite as one. Her hands are fumbling with my sweats as I bunch her dress up to her waist. The thong she wears is easily ripped from her frame with one strong pull. The act causes her to push her hips against mine in excitement. Holding her tightly with my left arm, I use my right hand to slip myself against her folds.
“Damn,” I curse, feeling how wet she is for me already.
As if she can read my mind she says, “She missed you too.”
I lean in and nip at her bottom lip as I guide myself inside, stretching her walls. She cries out softly as I’m welcomed back to my favorite place. Digging her heels into my lower back, Mila uses the leverage to drop onto me fully, causing us both to moan out.
“Hold on,” I instruct as I grip both of her hips.
I wait until she interlocks her arms around my shoulders but once she does? I began to plummet into her warmth with abandon. My concentration is solely on the way our bodies work in tandem, each time I pull back, I’m covered in more and more of Mila. When I glance up, I catch Mila’s focused stare as she watches the way I disappear and reappear inside of her. Each time snatching more of her breath than the last. Feeling my stare, she drags me closer for a kiss. Her tongue flicks against mine until I capture and suck it slowly.
“Xayyy,” she cries, tearing her mouth from mine. Her back is flush against the wall as I alternate my strokes from deep plunges to a slow grind against her spot.
“What’s up baby? Talk to me,” I said, speaking directly in her ear before licking the outer shell. “What do you want me to do?”
“There, there, there. Stay there,” she panted, tightening her grip against me.
“Right here?” I said, grinding deeper towards the left.
“Yes! Yes!” she said, flinging her head back so it lands on the wall with a soft thud. Her hips are winding, meeting my thrusts eagerly. We are in this together.
“You really luh me?” I questioned teasingly, placing a kiss on her damp collarbone.
“I do,” she said, nodding her head fervently. “So fucking much.”
“You gon’ cum for me then?” I asked.
“If you listen and don’t move,” she whines, causing me to chuckle.
Placing my lips against hers, I said, “I got you baby. I got you.”
Slipping a hand between us, I rub my fingers across her clit in circular motions causing her hips to freeze as she succumbs to the pleasure. “Nuh uh, no one told you to stop. Keep going,” I said.
“That’s too much,” she breathed out, tears aligning her eyes again. This time from pleasure as she tries to rise up to alleviate the pressure she was chasing only moments before. I yank her back down not allowing the escape.
“You got this,” I said, stealing another kiss. “Fuck me back like a good girl.”
Licking her lips, she nods her head, my words successfully triggering her hips to continue meeting my strokes. Though they initially held steady in pace, the more I played with her clit, the more frantic Mila’s movements became. Her walls were starting to pulse against me and I knew it was only a matter of time before we were both on our way to bliss.
All that could be heard between us was heavy breathing and the sound of our skin slapping against one another. Catching her gaze again, I saw the vulnerability she used to try to hide. At this moment it’s all there for me to see and I have never been more appreciative. Leaning in, I rest my forehead on hers as our lips meet for another kiss. It’s as frantic as our lower bodies as the power of our connection drives us forward. We’re moaning together as we crash out at the same time. This orgasm steals our breaths as we slink to the floor entangled. From this day forward I knew we would always have each other. When I looked at Mila, it was like seeing my heartbeat outside of my chest.
Breathing hard against one another, we exchange soft kisses, and gentle touches as we come down from the intensity of our orgasms. She’s placing kisses on my chest while I play with her hair when I say, “Please don’t shut me out again. I know every day won’t be easy but I promise not to make it harder. I promise to have your back as long as you let me. I promise to choose you everyday.”
Raising her head up, she meets my eyes and I see the remorse in her gaze but it’s unnecessary because she was forgiven weeks ago. “I promise too. I promise to be better and to communicate instead of running away. I promise to choose you too.”
Lifting my index finger, I silently beckon her to come closer which she does by slinking her body up my torso. When she is close enough, I grab her throat and pull her towards my face. At the same time her hand finds my length. We sink into each other at the same time. Our promises are sealed.

Oscar Diaz-Run It
So have y’all ever been in a fighting mood? Cause uh I am, so I decided to write to try and get it out and all it did was make me more hyped lmfao!!! Anyways, enjoy guys!
~
“Why’s that bitch still texting your phone though? And why did I have to find out about it like this? Huh? Cause you got two seconds to answer me before I beat your ass and then hers.” You threaten Oscar as you pace in front of him in the living room,”Why is her fucking name popping up in your text notifications!”
“Yo, chill the fuck out! Why don’t you read the shit before trying to accuse me of anything?” Oscar says with a smack of his lips,”I told the bitch the last time to stop hitting my line, guess she didn’t get the hint.”
“Alright, let me see then.” You say and hold your hand out,”I wanna know why the fuck she thinks it’s okay to keep texting my boyfriend.”
“Read that shit then.” Oscar demands as he unlocks the phone and slaps it in your hand,”I ain’t got shit to hide.”
“I’ll decide that.” You scoff as you click on the message.
Letty:Why haven’t you been hitting me up Spooky, it’s been months? We use to be so close, you don’t want to chill with me anymore? Y/N ain’t even gotta know papi, I know you miss us. Cause I really miss what we had.
“Oh hell nah, she has me fucked up.” You say as you toss his phone back to him,”She wants to message you? When you’re mine now? Fuck no, she wants attention? She’s gonna get attention from me.” You ramble as you walk over to the hall closet and pull on your air forces,”Let me go ask her what was going through her head when she sent that.”
“Nah, you ain’t fighting.” Oscar warns as he gets up to stand in front of you,”We ain’t doing all that.”
“You wanna protect that bitch or what?” You ask angrily as you double knot your laces,”Cause I know what I’m about to go do, so if you want to try and stop it that’s telling me you’re on her side.”
“Fuck you, I ain’t on that putas side, but you ain’t fighting. Cause if you get touched I’ma get heated.” Oscar says before sighing deeply and looking for his own sneakers in the closet now,”Man, just rock her shit if it comes down to it. I don’t need to be hitting no fucking female.”
“I ain’t looking for a fight per se but if she feeling froggy we can throw down no issue.” You shrug nonchalantly,”She better not get too loud either, cause if she’s in arms reach she’s definitely getting popped on the mouth.”
“You ain’t gotta tell me, I know. Trust me.” Oscar hypes you up, following behind as you walk out the front door and to the house that was three lots over.
“You texting my man!?” You scream as you push open the rusted gate to her yard as you find her and one of her homegirls sitting on the steps,”What’s up? You want to be our friend? Cause we can all be in a group chat and send emojis and shit.” You add as you come to a stop in front of her, both girls standing to their feet quickly.
“Girl you’re trippin, it ain’t even serious like that. Just go home, I’m too old for this childish back and fourth.” Letty says with a scowl and flip of her hair, her friend laughing at that.
“You think something’s funny? Cause we can run it too.” You threaten as you take a step back and throw your arms up in exaggeration,”You’re not going to keep disrespecting me or my relationship, so tell me what you wanna do. You wanna squash the shit right now and I’ll leave you be or are you going to keep texting Oscar? Be straight up.”
“I’m grown, I’ll do what I want. If I want to text my homeboy, I’m going to do that.” She responds as her friend takes a step forward in your direction.
“My bitch isn’t fighting, if you wanna fight you can fight me.” She interjects before you can speak.
“Bet, let me tell your right now though that I ain’t fighting fair.” You say with a small nod before you reach your hand out and quickly snatch her by the bun,”Should have...let your...friend fight bitch.” You manage to get out in breaths as your other hand comes out to hit the back of her head a few times,”Stupid ass bitch!” You say as you bring your knee up to her face one time.
“Aye, back the fuck up.” You hear Oscar threaten Letty as she steps closer, her hand grabbing the back of your shirt and pulling.
“I’m just trying to break it up!” She defends as you continue to throw blows to the back of her friends head,”Tell her to stop already, all she’s doing is pulling her fucking hair out.”
“I don’t give a fuck.” Oscar defends as he grabs her by the arms and pulls her back,”Touch her again if you want, go ahead.”
“Fuck.” She says with a shaky voice as she bounces on her feet nervously,”Alright enough Paula!” She groans as she goes to her friend and pulls her back,”Stop trying to hit back, you’re face is leaking girl.”
“You done?” You ask out of breath as you step back into Oscar clumsily and wipe your forehead quickly with your sleeve, a few of the neighbors sitting out on their porch now,”Cause we can go again if you want to.”
“I ain’t with that hair pulling sh...”She tries to lie before you shove her by the shoulders roughly.
“Well I am, so what do you want to do about it? We can go again though if you want, no hair pulling.” You offer
“I’m good bitch, ima catch you next time.” She try’s to threaten.
“Nah ain’t no next time, you can fight my girl right now or never. Y’all ain’t gonna get this chance again, cause next time I’m gonna be the one throwing hits.” Oscar says as he points in between the three of y’all,”So say whatever needs to be said so this shit can be done.”
“You came to my yard, what do you want to do bitch?” Letty says as she ties her hair up,”You ain’t about to make me look like a pussy. Ain’t no pussy in my blood bitch, hit m...”
SMACK
“Watch how you talk to me and step forward.” You smirk after you bring your hand back from slapping the fire out of her soul, not being able to stop the dry laugh that left your lips,”Let’s throw down already man, I just smacked you. Come fight me, you were just talking a big game so let’s go.”
“Let’s go then bitch!” She says as her hand comes out to scratch down your cheek and neck,”Don’t come on my yard talking all that shit.” She huffs as she grabs you by the hair and brings you down to the gravel, getting one good hit in before you flip her over and straddle her waist.
“Make them get up, not no ground shit!” Paula shouts to Oscar,”Tell your bitch to get off!”
“Fuck you.” Oscar replies with a wave of his hand as you began to bring your fist down repeatedly on her face,”This is their fight, let them run it how they want.”
“Keep...fucking...with my...man.” You groan as you grow sluggish in between hits, your arms growing tired as you slow down not even 45 seconds later.
“Alright, get her off of me already!” She screeches from underneath you.
“Weak ass bitch.” You huff as you use her body to help you stand up after giving her one final hit,”Try me again if you want. I’m always down for a round.” You say as you place your hands on your hips, looking up at the sky as you catch your breath.
“We’re straight, go the fuck home already.” Letty says as she stands to her feet and fixes her top.
“Nah, ima talk my shit and then I’ll go home.” You say before taking in a deep breath.
“Why you so pressed? Oscar use to be in my inbox first, he was in my messages hitting me up to fuck. So check his ass.”
“That was before Y/N, Pinche pass around I didn’t have to ask for shit.” Oscar says with a clenched jaw as he looks away, grabbing the blunt from his ear and lighting it up,”Y’all hurry and finish this shit up already.”
“All he did was hit you up to fuck? That’s it?” You ask rhetorically as you Ignore Oscar,”He didn’t give you money? Treat you like his baby? Feed you? Give you any real time? Did he even give you some weed? All he did was flirt and fuck and you felt something special with him?” You laugh with a clap of your hands,”Cause baby he does all that for me and then some cause I’m his women. I’m going to always be his just like he’s always going to be mine, cause I’m not going anywhere. Ever. So think about that the next time you get it in your head to text him. You know where I stay, so if you’re ever feeling like you got some balls again just come find me.”
“Girl bye, I’m not gonna stand here all day and listen to you.” Is all she says as she turns on her feet and heads inside with her friend, her screen door slamming shut as her feelings grow hurt.
“Are we good here?” Oscar asks after taking a hit,”Can we go home now?”
“Yup.” You say with a swing of your arms,”I made my point, did I not?”
“More than made it.” He laughs as he follows you back to the Diaz household,”Bitches be bonkers.”
“Bitches be bonkers.” You agree as you glance back at him.
“Aye on some real shit though mami, what was with that hair pulling shit? I’ve never seen you really do that before.”
“Cause she’s a catty bitch, so I’m sure her friends are too. So I had to be cattier, I mean look at my fucking face. Bitch scratched the fuck out of me.” You explain with a eye-roll,”That’s why Letty has a big ass knot on her forehead now, you’re not gonna mess up my face and think shits finna be cool.”
“I understand, but on some even realer shit I’d never entertain another female. Not when I got you. None of these girls are even on your level, and not just physically. You’re it for me ma, you’re all I’m going to ever want.”
“I know, but I still get mad when bitches try to come in between us. That they think they could even have a real shot with you, I can’t help but want to knock some sense into them.” You laugh as you head up the steps,”Fuuuuck, I’m so tired. I can’t fight back like I did in high school.”
“I know when I got into it with those Prophets the other day I thought my back was going to give out.” He chimes in with a chuckle,”It’s only been a couple of years since then, should we feel this old?”
“Fuck if I know.” You shrug as you kick off your shoes by the door,”I mean all we do is smoke and eat junk food. We’re not the ideal picture of health.”
“Fuck all that, I still got hands. These are certified. One punch and you out.” He says as he throws out a quick playful jab your way.
“Shut up stupid.” You laugh with a shake of your head,”Don’t get cocky now.”
“Aye well you got your adrenaline out, I didn’t have that chance.” Oscar says as he delivers a hard smack to your ass,”You gone have to help me out.”
“Oh you want me to knock you on your ass too?” You joke as you swat him away,”Go down to the next street, I’m sure you can take your adrenaline out on one of those Barney looking mother fuckers.
“I’m thinking of other ways to get it out.”
“Oh I know what you’re thinking, but if you would have blocked the bitch when I told you too, I wouldn’t have to had get in a fight today. So you’re not getting shit today. That’s your punishment for not listening to me when I warn you about these thirsty girls.”
“Really mami?” Oscar complains as he follows you to the bathroom door,”You can’t leave me like this.”
“Yes I can.” You smile sweetly as you shut the door and lock it,”Next time you’ll listen!” You call out after starting the water, Oscar grumbling to himself before trudging to the bedroom to fling himself on the bed. Not going to complain about anything for the rest of the day so he won’t make you upset, not ever wanting to be on the receiving end of his girls hands after seeing that you still had a bit of fight left in you.
If you liked this make sure to show it some love <3

Complicated Part 1
Written by @YesImAGlowstick and @VishousBDB_ (AU)
*~*~*~*
Vishous: *I walked into the gym and was glad no one was around. I put my earbuds in and played Nowhere fast by Eminem, as loud as the volume would go. I was trying to drown out the voices in my head, my thoughts, and the world around me. I was getting antsy and the only way to get a quick fix was sex or exercise. And atm I didn’t want to think about the first choice. So cardio and pumping iron it was. I did some quick stretches and then hopped on the treadmill. I started off at a slow jog to warm myself up. One foot in front of the other. Breathe, in through the nose and out the mouth. My arms making a quick pace beside me to match my pace. After about ten mins I jacked the machine up to a four incline and was running at full pace.*
Lassiter:
After my little spontaneous fight club the last time I’d hit the gym, I’d taken a step back from hitting the weights and fucking up the treadmills. Going a few rounds with whoever looked at me had done a lot to let out the last of the guilt and the anger, but that didn’t mean every other part of my life was sunshine and roses.
Between the happily mated pairs and the not so happily mated pairs, I was on struggle street heading uphill with a broken fucking clutch. And fuck me, it wasn’t like I was itching to be paired off. I’d known when I became an Angel, known that serving Him would take priority over all else. The past centuries I’d done my best to avoid the kinds of emotional connections that would cripple me if He ordered me away. How was I supposed to survive centuries of constantly losing loved ones?
Yet undeniably, all the Brothers and their mates meant more to me now than simple tasks set by Him for completion. If the Creator chose to pull me away, I would bleed inside.
That didn’t change the fact I was all but itching to get away from them right now. And thank fuck, The Pit was far enough away from the gym that I could pretend I couldn’t hear Vishous tapping away at a keyboard, or listening to a Red Sox game, on repeat, that nobody but Vishous, Butch and the Red Sox cared about.
Pushing open the gym door, I almost fell over myself in an effort to come to a dead stop.
“Oh motherfucker…”
If I backed out slowly… I could still get away. No sudden movements. No further expletives. Just leave…
Vishous: *I was sweating. My black shirt clung to my body like a second skin. I powered through my legs feeling like they were going to collapse. The pain shooting through my muscles a much welcome distraction. After a few more mins I could feel my body reaching a numbing point. I ran and ran until my playlist started to repeat itself. My body spent, I put the incline to zero and walked for a minute or two before turning it off. Shower. I popped out my earbuds and peeled off my shirt. That’s when I noticed the angel. He was staring hard.*
Lassiter:
Those diamond eyes locked on me as I stood in the frame, caught on the precipice of what was arguably heaven n’ hell. Somehow swallowing the slew of curses that ‘really’ wanted to come out, I reminded myself that I couldn’t pussy out. Instead I wrenched my gaze off the male and picked a bench halfway across the room, beelining it for the leather and throwing my towel over it.
Rather than glance back over at Vishous, all glistening skin and fearsome features, I grabbed a few discs of weight and racked them on.
Vishous: *His white gaze shifted and I waited for him to say something but instead he moved to the complete opposite side of the gym and was busy with weights. I went to my locker and as I opened the door, my phone buzzed in the pocket of my gym shorts. I pulled it out and had to bite back a curse. It was from Tohr saying I was on rotation with Lassiter tonight, because cop had tests to set up for the trainees. Fuck. I put my phone on the shelf in the locker and took off my shorts. I grabbed my towel and went to the showers.*
Lassiter:
Vishous doing the shortless walk to the showers did NOT escape my attention, FYI. That motherfucker’s rear was clearly crafted by Gods, though hopefully not his mother. Ew. Awkward thoughts…
I’d barely finished racking on the weight when my phone buzzed. I almost leapt on it, needing the distraction, hoping it was Tohr with a job to do or a request. I’d even play delivery boy tonight if it got me away from the manse.
But of course…
A string of colorful words left my lips at the directive to go on rotation with Vishous, and for the first time in a long time I almost considered replying with a ‘no’, or perhaps a ‘fuck no’. Then again…
Casting a glance toward the showers, I took a deep breath and tried to think it through. It wasn’t like we’d be doing anything but patrolling and fighting. And a good fight… damn, I kind of needed the exertion. I kind of needed to hit something.
Tucking the phone back into my pocket, I unloaded the weights and strode toward the showers. Stepping onto the tiled floor, steam wafted out to greet me, my hair sitting flat as I peered through the mists to find Vishous.
“Yo,” I called, my voice nice and steady. “We’re working tonight. Where do you wanna meet up? Upstairs or downtown?”
Vishous: *I turned the knobs to pretty fucking hot and stepped under the pounding spray of the shower head. I grabbed the shampoo and did quick work of washing my hair before moving to the bar of soap and giving my body a wash. The hot water felt good on my sore muscles. The sound of the water slapping against the tiles was calming. I put both palms flat against the tile wall and just let the water run over my head, chest, and shoulders. I heard footsteps come into the shower room and I turned my head to see lassiter a few feet away. I turned of the water and stepped out to grab my towel off the hook. I quickly began to dry myself off and wrapped it around my hips. I bit back a curse. I was hard as a rock. The towel did nothing to hide “it”. * Give me an hour and meet me on top of the iron mask?
Lassiter:
“A whole hour?” I muse, arching a brow at the request. “What, you gotta do your makeup n’ your hair or some shit? Don’t worry V, you’re pretty without all that extra shit,” I offer, doing my damndest to be both cheery and annoying. Judging by the look on the male’s face, I was hitting the target dead on.
And I mean, it wasn’t like I was wrong. Vishous /was/ pretty. The whole ‘son of a deity’ was working for him when I breezed in to see his glorious form all but splayed against the wall. Running water, steam, and an ass carved out of marble.
Was it possible to tempt angels into Hell like this? Cause dayum, I was suddenly grateful that He had never put a caveat on impure thoughts. I’d never get out of Hell.
“Aight, I’ll give you your hour. I’ma shower n’ get ready myself.”
But oh… did I dare shower down here? …nah, probably a bad idea.
Vishous: *The angel had his way of annoying the fuck out of me but at least it let up the tension in the air. I started towards my lockers and pulled out my leathers and shitkickers. Making quick work of getting dressed, I called back.* Yea cold steel is goin to look real fucking pretty. *I closed the locker up and walked out of the training center. I was headed to the pit, without another word to Lassiter.*
Lassiter:
Well… I guess that solved that problem. Being so annoying as to drive the male off was one way to get the showers to myself. As he went for his locker I shrugged, trying to ignore the twisty feelings in my gut and instead stripped off my shirt. Kicking off my sweats and joggers, I took one of the still cold showers and cranked the tap into ‘melt my fucking bones’ hot.
Yeah yeah, I can hear you all cautioning that I should’ve been having a cold shower, but hey, he was about to leave and I had the place to myself. Hot was gonna be fine.
Rolling my shoulders, I felt the scar down my back pull only slightly. Weeks of training and conditioning until I could barely feel the thing had done the trick, though I still didn’t bother summoning my wings anymore. And ironically, Vishous was one of the few I could tolerate showing it to at any point. Vishous had scars of his own - in that… we matched. Sadly.
Vishous: *I had dressed in my leathers and loaded up my dagger and gun holsters, checking everything a second time. I was really fucking hoping I wouldn’t have to use them. The night would be a quick recon and I could get back home and start drinking to forget all about Lassiter. To forget about cop. To forget who the fuck I was. I stepped outside the mansion and demateralized to the top of the iron mask. I lit up a handrolled as I waited for the angel.*
Lassiter:
The shower was magic, if not lonely, and rather than don my usual visually aggressive clothing line afterward, I instead pulled on the leather, shitkickers and all black ensembles the males were used to rocking in the night. Some days I figured they were all just shy of a few extra props to get a YMCA dance going.
A hop skip and a jump of ghosting across town and I appeared on the rooftop near Vishous, in invisi mode. I appreciated the view, and ironically, I wasn’t talking about the male. After a few seconds, I popped into existence beside him. Dear Creator, let this night not be a clusterfuck.
“Evening.”
Vishous: *As the angel appeared beside me I had just finished my smoke and was putting the butt in my breast pocket. My diamond eyes gave the angel a once over.* We start with the rooftops and then check the alleys. You move when I move. If its all quiet after a few hours we get to split as per Tohr. *Part of me wanted a good fight. The other part wanted to drink myself into a coma.*
Lassiter:
“No shit Sherlock,” I reply cheerfully, trying not to give Vishous the finger as he treated me like some rookie who’d never been on a rotation before. Some days it was a struggle not to remind these grouchy motherfuckers I was actually older than them. Respect your elders, bitches.
“Here’s hoping all the ickle Lessers are safe at home in their beds n’ we have a cruisy night. Dunno about you, but m’ not really in the mood for your bright n’ shiny personality,” I add bluntly, still faking the whole cheery smile routine. I was an angel, after all.
Vishous: Ditto angel. *I demateralized a few buildings down and into a nearby alley. I crouched low staying close to the building before I rounded the corner. A black truck hid me as I peeked around. I could smell them before they were even close. Baby powder and rot filled my nose. I wanted to gag. I didn’t bother turning around or waiting for Lassiter to keep up. He was tight on my ass. Had to give him props when it came to hunting. Gone was the cheery eyed school girl. Lassiter was all business. I whispered.* “I count three of them about a mile out. They smell new.” *I palmed a dagger and waited.*
Lassiter:
“Sure, if ‘new’ is rancid three week old meat and sugar,” I mutter, taking a deep breath and getting the same whiff of putrefaction.
Noting V drawing a dagger, I opted for the silent method too, ignoring the twin glocks and going for a nine inch stainless steel blade that’d slide home between a Lessers ribs no problem. I, however, wasn’t locked into the whole ‘hide and seek’ thing. Stepping past V, I shot him a quick look, my voice a whisper.
“Play distraction as they get closer.”
There were perks to being an angel. I didn’t have to dematerialize to go invisible, instead vanishing from sight and moving down the street like the grim fucking reaper, leaving Vishous in the shadow of the truck. Getting into place behind the Lessers, I mirrored their steps as they got closer to V’s spot.
The Creator himself could ask me and I’d deny it, but being on the other side as Lessers approached Vishous got my heart rate jacked. Regardless of our bullshit… protecting the male was right now at the top of my ‘to do’ list.
Vishous: *I stepped out of the shadows as Lassiter called it distraction. I knew the angel was near. Did I trust him not to get my ass killed? Short answer? Yes. The lessers caught a glimpse of me and started running. I didn’t see any automatic weapons so I didn’t draw my glocks. Instead, I widen my stance and moved in a blur of speed. I plunged my dagger in the chest cavity of the first lesser. He let out a screech and then pop. Flash of light and the fucker was gone. I turned toward the second but didn’t move fast enough before he sliced up my bicep with the butterfly knife he was carrying. I forced myself to kick the lesser, crushing his knee cap and sending him stumbling over. I backed up to give myself space, that’s when I saw the angel.*
Lassiter:
Good to see that as distracting as Vishous could be for me, he was even more so with Lessers. Whoop-di-fucking-do-dah.
Despite their running act, as soon as the two moved forward to engage V, I came up behind the third. Putting the invisible man to shame, I used the little blinding light moment from the Brother’s popped Lesser to insert my knife right through the top of the demon’s spine. The rest of his body went limp, his weapon clattering from lifeless fingers as his meat sack crumpled into a pile. Before I could drop down to provide my own little light show, everything shifted.
The scent of V’s blood in the air hit me like a truck. I didn’t think as I became visible again, my head whipping around to see the Lesser staggering back from the vampire, catching sight of me. V’s arm leaked red; the only color I saw as I darted forward. I barely felt the kiss of the blade as the Omega’s spawn took a slice at me. It glanced off my shoulder, silver blood spattering the concrete. I snarled, seizing the things head and wrenching it sideways. Its neck broke with a loud SNAP.
His body hit the pavement. My knife went for his heart. With another burst of sound and light, the corpse was gone. I looked to V.
“I said distract them, not introduce yourself to their weapons,” I managed, my tone mercifully even. “That cut deep?”
Vishous: *The angel made quick work of the remaining lessers and I have to say, the male was good with his hands. The adrenaline in my blood was so thick I didn’t feel the pain in my bicep…yet. I looked at my arm and holstered my daggers.* I’ll live angel. *A smirk on my puss as I went in my pocket to get out a smoke. I didn’t have time to react to what happened next. Fuck me this was sloppy. Noob move. I should of scanned better. My legs buckled and sent me flying face down kissing the concrete. I heard Lassiter saying something but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. My vision was blurry and getting dark. I tried to get up but my body was failing me.* Lassiter! *I screamed his name.*
Lassiter:
‘I’ll live’.
Famous last words.
The bullet ripped through the vampire like he was butter. For one impossible second my brain struggled to process it. The spray of blood. The whiplash of his body. The echoing crack that finally followed, the sound so much slower than the metal.
Then I was moving. Vishous hit the pavement and I was over him, my body a shield. Sliding my arms under his I dragged, hauling his leather coated rear out of the line of fire until we were tucked against the building.
“V! Vishous!”
I was snarling his name, but even if I’d screamed it he wasn’t about to pop those diamond eyes and flash me a smile. My fingers pressed against his throat, adrenaline hitting every nerve and frying my concentration until I felt that wonderful, incredible thing.
Tha-thump.
A pulse. He was out for the count but he wasn’t dead. But now I had two problems. Getting Vishous back to the med suite, and doing so without also getting my head blown off. Logic dictated I find the Lesser and rip him to pieces, but logic so often took a back seat for this sort of shit that now was no exception.
I ghosted, leaving the shelter of the building in my invisi state and flying down the street to the nearest car. If you think I cared that it had one window made of duct tape and barely four wheels, you’re dead fucking wrong. It was a stallion, a chariot, Willy Wonka’s magic elevator. It was the escape hatch and I broke into that bitch and started her like it was the Fast and the Furious and Vin Diesel was waiting for me to race.
Screaming back down the street, I jerked the car around and threw open the door. It offered some modicum of a shield, but already I could feel the hood of the car taking punishment. Dragging the male into the car, I didn’t wait for the door to shut properly before I stepped on the gas and lurched us forward. The windshield pinged, shards of glass scattering over me as bullets made almost perfect holes. A dodged lamp post, a mounted curb, and the car lurched onto a new street. The rain of gunfire ceased.
“Vishous!”
Glancing over at the male, I cursed and fumbled my phone out of my coat. A near flat battery. The time leered out at me from the screen. Just when I thought I’d lost a problem, I gained a new one. Dawn was barely twenty minutes off. Much as I liked to think this piece of crap stallion would make the manse in time, there was no way in hell.
I swung off the main road and changed direction, my brain racing ahead. There were parking garages and storage areas nearby that would provide the privacy and shade I’d need for the male for the day, but if I didn’t get to one fast enough, it wouldn’t matter. He was bleeding, and the amount of blood was upping my anxiety about a billion.
“Vishous! I need you to wake the fuck up and answer me!”
Vishous: *I was floating and Lassiter came to me with those huge white and silver tipped wings of his. I knew they were incredibly soft. I had touched them more than a few times. They felt like fucking clouds, being so strong as to lift the angel gracefully towards me. Everything was white so as shiny as Lassiter usually is he actually stood out from the background. He lifted me up in his arms. For some reason I couldn’t move a fucking muscle. I looked into his white eyes and for the first time in a while I felt comfort. The angel smiled at me and before I could ask a question he shook his head and I could hear him yelling for me to wake up. The sound was distant. Then it came closer, and closer until I closed my eyes and opened them again. Lassiter was driving and I tried to answer him in a raspy voice.* Miss me?

FTB Ch 1.
50 Tungsten Bullets Chapter 1: Fifty
Summary | Next
“Who did you get this from?” Jeebs asked.
Spiv leaned on the pawner’s counter. “Who?” he smirked. ”Ain’t no ‘who.’ Found it ourselves, old man. Though, I might be willing to part with the where for something extra.”
“I ain’t that old.”
“Twenty years my senior at least,” Spiv snickered. “Makes you old in my book.”
Truth be told, Spiv wasn’t sure as to the exact age of Mr. Jeebs. Looked just as wrinkled and grumpy as he did the day Spiv tried to steal the shoes off his feet as a kid. Spiv got caught and beat till he was seeing stars. But by the fourth attempt, Jeebs sat him down with some lukewarm soup and taught him how to make an honest living. Well, a more honest living.
Jeebs stared at the immaculate metal cylinder with a solemn glare. He didn’t even bother responding with one of his famous ten K curses. The device was silver in color, with a gold tint and despite the dim sunlight peeking through the cracks in Jeeb’s shack, it lit up the room as if being struck by mid day. Fifty thousand kollars, easy. Spiv hadn’t the foggiest what the thing he found was, but old world tech like that would fetch a pretty penny from collectors. He brought it to Jeebs because, fuck, even he got a little sentimental at times. Spiv figured it’d only be right for Jeebs to make the first offer.
“Put it back,” Jeebs spoke without looking up.
“Sun bake your brain while I’ve been gone?” Spiv pushed off the ancient dead wood table and paced in a circle. “Shit, Jeebs. My crew almost died a dozen times over to get that thing to town and now you’re saying put it back? This could really change things for us if we find the right buyer.”
“Ain’t gonna be no buyers, put it back,” Jeebs growled.
“Old man, I got nothing but respect for you. You’ve done a lot for us over the years, but now you’re talkin’ about taking money out of our pocket.”
Spiv reached for the device. Jeebs slammed his hand down on its casing with such force that it knocked a crystal on the shelf behind him to the floor, shattering in a myriad of iridescent colors.
“Take it past Yonder’s Mountain, to the bunker where you found it, and put it back.”
“How’d you-”
Jeebs eyes burned beneath droopy lids and a thick brow. “Because I’m the one who put it there.”
“You couldn’t have,” Spiv stammered. “The hull was sealed for centuries. We checked the logs.”
“User authenticated,” a synthesized voice spoke from the device. There was a hiss as white fog seeped out. A panel popped open to reveal a hollow interior.
Spiv’s eyes bulged like a rock rabbit that’s been left dead two days on a dirt road. “Shit… You’re an old worlder. One the immortals.”
“Ain’t all that. Can still die, same as any of you. Just don’t get any older is all.”
Spiv’s gaze drifted back to the capsule. Jeebs turned it around so he could see. Inside was a massive revolver and a single shell with a name on it. Gun like that put everything in the crew’s arsenal to shame. Probably put everything in the whole town of Bakersville to shame.
“It’s my gun,” Jeebs said. “Hideo model 12 hybrid, fifty cal. Made to fire tungsten rounds with ionized neon core. Could punch a hole the size of my fist in a tank from a quarter mile off. And that casing is from when I shot the man who killed my wife.”
“You could buy all of Bakersville with that thing. Fuckn’ shit.”
Jeebs looked away. “And all it cost me was two tickets to Fluorescent.”
“Bull crap,” Spiv laughed. “Old man Jeebs living it up with the rich folks on Fluorescent? I can’t even picture it.”
“It’s the truth. Would have been. If, well...”
“Sorry about your wife.”
“No need to trouble yourself,” Jeebs said, rubbing his nose. “Happened before your great great grandaddy could piss himself.”
“Why leave the gun in the ground?”
“Killed two dozen men with that thing. Didn’t want to be reminded of the kind of man it made me. Stuck it in a casimir vacuum chamber and left it at my wife’s grave.”
A minute of silence passed between them. Jeebs refused to look at the capsule. Spiv couldn’t look away.
“What does it take? To become immortal, that is,” Spiv asked.
Jeebs let out a sigh. “Wouldn't tell a soul even if I knew. Wars were fought over that question. Wouldn’t want to be the cause of the next.”
“Does that mean you’re the last one left? Thought all the immortals were rounded up and killed off in the last conflict.”
“No, not all. They just keep a low profile, like me. Can’t be having any more joining the club neither. Just pray that you never meet one. Seen what happens when people live long enough to lose their humanity.”
Spiv took a deep breath, resting his hands behind his head. “Could just as easily turn you in and buy a ticket to Fluorescent myself.”
“Do what you will,” Jeebs spoke. “You’re a good kid. Wouldn’t want my head to pay for nobody else’s trip to Flour. But I won’t be goin’ easy. Last thing my wife said to me before she died was to live a long and beautiful life. And I don’t intend to let her know how cruel that was to say.”
Spiv cracked a smile. “Wouldn’t dream of throwing my father off a cliff to save my own skin. Might never met him, but you’re sure as hell the closest thing I’ve got.”
Jeebs wiped his eyes. “Don’t say shit like that. Might even make this ol’ life worth living.”
“But what about the gun? Even if I put it back, someone else is just gonna come along and find it.”
“I know.” Jeebs said. “Just get it out of my sight. It’s yours. Spent too much time remembering things I’d hoped to forget.”
“Ey, Spiv,” a wary voice spoke from behind.
“Well if it ain’t lil’ Kit,” Jeebs chuckled. “Still think you’re better off runin’ with Spiv than workin’ the brothel with your mum.”
“Fuck off, Jeebs. But seriously,“ she said, tugging at Spiv’s arm. “We gotta go. Like right now.”
Spiv glared at her. “What’d you do?”
“I got kinda bored waiting and I mighta scammed a few shady pricks. Now let’s go!”
“Weren’t wearing black masks, were they?” Spiv asked.
“Yeah. Why?”
“Fuck, Kit! That’s the Faceless Gang from the down south. I warned you about them. Those fuckers will straight up kill you. Like chopped up into little bits and fed to livestock kinda dead.”
Kit chewed on her cheek. “...Well that’s even more reason why we need to go.”
“Take the door out back,” Jeebs said. Right as the one in the front was knocked clean off its hinges by a large, black boot.
Spiv scooped up the capsule and bolted. “Find the crew and skip,” he said to Kit as they crept out of the shack. “Not the usual place. Second cave past the landfill. Got it?”
“Yeah. What about you?”
“I’m staying for a bit. Gotta see if old man Jeebs needs my help.”
Kit nodded. She pulled her scarf around her face and dashed off. Like lightning on a sunny day the kids used to call her, and for good reason. Spiv breathed a little easier. Ice cube’s chance in winter on Sebrum anyone’d catch Kit when she got going.
Spiv peaked between shelves filled with Jeeb’s junk. Just enough to see a cloaked figure in all black strutting towards the old man, an intimidating gun at his hip.
“Lookin’ for a little roach that ran away with my money,” the stranger said. “Wouldn’t happened to seen where it went, would you pawn man?”
The man in black spoke through some sort of filter. His voice sounded distorted, robotic, like that of the AI in Jeeb’s capsule.
“Don’t do business with roaches.” Jeebs eyed the man from where he sat. “If you’re here to buy or sell, then we can talk.”
The man in black stepped closer and put both hands on the counter. “Well I’ll be. You are the spittin’ image of the man that killed the ol boss Joey Iron Rod. Grandaddy o’ yours? Grandaddy’s granddaddy?”
“Wouldn’t know nothin’ ‘bout it.”
“Nah. ‘Cause I know for fact the fuck never made spawn. You are the man that killed Joey Iron Rod. Woulda thought time’d do my work for me. Guess the only way to make sure a job is done is to do it yourself, right?” the stranger laughed.
“Might have a point there. Figured the rest of you immortal cunts got blown up in the wars with the rest.” Jeebs reached for a shotgun under his desk.
“Nah see, the old old gang made it through the wars alright. Hid out in the desert, got by. ‘Course, really should be thanking you. Made picking them off myself a whole lot easier.” The stranger leaned in closer. “Let you in on a secret. Reason my gang wear’s masks is so I’ll always be on top. Just gotta purge a couple cunts and call myself something new. ‘Course, now that you know, I’ma have to kill you.”
“Best move your failed fetal acohol abortion ass along,” Jeebs said. “This is my town. Been here forty years. Anything happens to me, posse of thirty to three hundred be after you.”
The man in black stepped away, turning his back, arms raised in a V. “Town might be yours, but the whole world of Sebrum is mine. I am its god. Its immortal ruler. Anyone who stands against my rule will be-”
Before the stranger could finish his sentence, Jeebs landed two rounds of buckshot in his back. The man stumbled from the impact, but he just laughed.
“Gonna need more than that to kill me,” the man in black spoke.
That voice made Spiv the coldest he’d ever felt. Tasting ice once when he was seven was now in second place. He swallowed, hard and dry.
The stranger rolled up a dark sleeve. Underneath was a metal arm. It gleamed like the capsule Spiv clutched in his hands.
“While you been playing shop keep, I’ve been quite productive with my time,” the stranger said, admiring his body. “Took a few generations of scavengers to collect all this. Enough old world tech to make that ol’ cyborg Joey Iron Rod green with envy. Count yourself honoured. You’re the first to see this hand in the better part of a century.”
He raised his palm to Jeebs.
Jeebs shoved another two rounds in his gun and took aim.
“Your wife screamed bloody murder as Joey split ‘er in two with his iron rod,” the man in black chuckled. “Thought I’d let you know, for when you meet ‘er again.”
There was a soft wine as capacitors discharged. A red light shined from the stranger’s hand, bathing the shop in blood red. Jeebs fired two shots.
Spiv blinked. The next thing he knew, the shack was in flames and Jeebs was on the ground in two pieces. Spiv shook. He’d feared for his life many a time before, but nothing quite compared to this. He wasn’t one to heed monsters. That was, until seeing one in metal flesh.
The man in black strutted out the way he came, whistling to himself. Spiv wanted to go after him. Wanted to take him from behind and smash his deranged face in. But Spiv was scared. So scared. Too scared to move. He crawled out of the rubble, capsule in hand, tears in his eyes and a tremble in his step.
It was night when Spiv returned to Jeeb’s shack. The poor thing was looted to completion in hours and the rest burned to the ground. A few people stood around a mound out front with a stone on top. Under normal circumstances, if someone fucked with this town, there’d be a posse after them in no time flat, for better or for worse. How places kept their peace and independence. Nothing like that tonight. By now, everyone had heard the rumors of what the Faceless Gang did to Westbrook Oasis a few miles south. Rumors Spiv was certain to be true.
Spiv adjusted his belt. He wasn’t used to the weight of fifty tungsten rounds quite yet. Cost him one thousand kollars each. His hand went to the cloth wrapped revolver resting in a holster at his side. The barrel alone nearly reached his knee. He pulled his hat a little lower, spat and walked off into the night. Word was the Faceless Gang was headed up to Jepsum. As luck would have it, so was he.

on the troubles of others
The speed at which my thoughts on culture issues are changing is honestly scaring the shit out of me, and I have to be up front and tell you this all began with the Ferguson shooting, which is to say, it isn’t even Seattle’s fault.
Prior to the shooting of Michael Brown, everything was very black and white to me. There was some grey between them, but it was more like fog than mud. I wasn’t very concerned with it (a direct result of that bubble life). Then another cop shot another black man when I just happened to be good friends with Zavier and everything changed.
Coming of age in a segregated pearly white bubble meant that I had no idea what kind of trouble others had in life. I certainly had plenty of my own to worry about, so it never occurred to me to investigate theirs. When I first met Zavier, a black man working the shift opposite mine, I had no idea that he was about to completely change my worldview — all I saw was a post-it sticking out from beneath the keyboard on the desk. When I pulled it out, I found a list of Reach Records artists, to which I responded with all the excitement of a stereotypical white girl:
“What’s this?!” “Whatchu mean?” he asked. “You listen to these guys??” “You listen to these guys?”
And then we were friends. He had always intimidated me, and not even because of his race. He’s the epitome of the expression “tall, dark, and handsome” (I was constantly rolling my eyes at women popping into our cubicle at shift change to giggle and twirl their hair at him). To be honest, I was privately shocked we’d managed to find a genuine friendship, and it turned out I wasn’t the only one. “I’ma be honest,” he said to me one day, “you surprised me. I had no idea you were so cool.” And I laughed, because the feeling was mutual. I had made assumptions about this black guy from the west side. I figured he was probably too tough, too cool to be friends with a fat, boring, white girl.
But he wasn’t too tough and he wasn’t too cool. When Michael Brown was shot, when his whole community was mourning, and I was confused and a little callous, he was patient and kind. He explained everything, answered all my questions, was never once condescending. He went far back into the Civil Rights Movement, educating me about Dr. King and Malcom X, and though he was angry, and though that anger came out in his words and tone, he treated me gently and always, always gave me space to process after.
At the risk of sounding like an asshole (I kind of was, to be frank), this was the first time I ached with sympathy for a group of people who experienced American life differently than I did, and it changed everything.
[After my last day of work, I sat in my car in the garage and cried, gutted by knowledge that moving to Seattle meant our friendship was over. Even if we kept in touch, which we have, it would never be that same intimate meeting of minds that I treasured so deeply.]
Last year, President Obama issued guidance to public schools, saying that allowances must be made for transgendered students who are uncomfortable or fearful using the traditional girls’ and boys’ bathrooms and locker rooms. Now, for myself, I don’t give a crap who’s in the stall beside me while I pee. The concern that I had with unisex bathrooms is that there could be (and apparently have been) predators who will abuse the new guidelines as a means to gain access to potential victims. With the recent spotlight on rape culture, I’m still confused as to why this concern was dismissed out of hand by the left. In Seattle, I never found cause for concern, because in most restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, there were already private bathrooms, so most business just removed the distinctions, which new businesses started building unisex bathrooms containing stalls that didn’t have gaps at the top and bottom of the doors. Easy peasy; moving right along.
Yesterday, however, against the advice of his education secretary, Trump rescinded the Obama administration’s guidelines for protection of trans students. There have been protests and articles and Twitter rants.
Remember that previously mentioned grey fog wafting between the black and the white for me? It’s mud now. And you know what muddied it? Compassion. The thing in the forefront of my mind is that everyone is afraid — trans people are afraid of being shamed and physically hurt; cis people are afraid that predators will abuse the new guidelines to perverse ends; ignorant people are afraid of what they don’t understand. Everyone is afraid.
But we cannot, as individuals or as a society, live in that fear. We can debate the big issues, sure, but can we really debate whether having to pee should spark a personal crisis? I can’t help but think that a generous round of compassion would do a lot to temper people’s anxieties. We all need Zaviers, and we all need to be Zaviers to the people who don’t understand us.
Or maybe, maybe, we need to be more like Jesus and exemplify the fruit of the Spirit, because that’s what really changed me, and, I dare say, screaming across the aisles at your enemies never changed anyone.

One night

#BondedBrothersAU
That's when I noticed the angel.
But oh… did I dare shower down here? ...nah, probably a bad idea.
I was really fucking hoping I wouldn't have to use them.
I didn't bother turning around or waiting for Lassiter to keep up.
I didn't see any automatic weapons so I didn't draw my glocks. Instead, I widen my stance and moved in a blur of speed. I plunged my dagger in the chest cavity of the first lesser. He let out a screech and then pop. Flash of light and the fucker was gone. I turned toward the second but didn't move fast enough before he sliced up my bicep with the butterfly knife he was carrying. I forced myself to kick the lesser, crushing his knee cap and sending him stumbling over. I backed up to give myself space, that's when I saw the angel.*
The adrenaline in my blood was so thick I didn’t feel the pain in my bicep...yet.
For some reason I couldn't move a fucking muscle.
