i’ll definitely try to make an actual tutorial when i have the chance, but for now, much of the magic comes from RetroSupply Co’s brushes! i mostly used their ColorLab brushes for that piece (for the halftones and the dirty effects)—they’re a bit costly for brushes and are only available for Procreate or Photoshop, but i think they’re a worthwhile investment and i think(?) they have sales sometimes!

they have some tutorials online, these two in particular have helped me a lot. these are for Procreate and i use Photoshop, but the jist is essentially the same! basically they give you a chart of halftone combinations and you mix them together to get all of your colors.

R.S.C. also has some freebies which i snag up as much as i can—this has a halftone brush in it that i use a lot when i’m feeling lazy/can’t find the right color combination, as well as some brushes you can use for some weathering/wear and tear! these are a godsend too!

i also like to find vintage paper textures on google (RSC has some too, i forget if they come with the Color Lab pack or not?) and set it both as a background layer and then one on top of everything set to multiply to make everything a little more yellow.

since i was going off of the comics themselves, i grabbed a bunch of frames and tried to study the way the ink behaved and the halftone offset and stuff like that! here are some that i used for reference on that particular piece:

i know this is pretty vague, and i’ll try to make a better tutorial when i have the chance, but i hope this helps at least somewhat! you don’t need expensive brushes to make things look vintage at all, i just found that those have helped me—studying the comics themselves and pouring through old comic books/identifying the patterns in the inking has helped me immensely!

He absolutely is!!!!

(This is gonna be kinda long, so excuse any spelling and/or grammar mistakes or any poor formatting because I’m on my phone and it’s 4:44am as I start writing)

I find Hinata’s character really interesting not only because of his natural ability and overall potential but because of the setbacks that present themselves so many times throughout his life and that, even in the face of those, he never backs down.

Hinata isn’t just short, something that is easily fixabel given his raw talent; He goes to a school with no boys volleyball team.

Hinata doesn’t just go to a school with no boys volleyball team; No one is willing to make one with him.

Hinata doesn’t just have a lack of understanding of the actual mechanics of the game; He has no one to teach him (And at this time it’s still 2011-2012, where they are seen using what are very much flip-phones and he likely has no access to things like google or youtube to look up tutorials).

Hinata wasn’t just a kid who loved volleyball; He was going to play no matter fucking what, and I ADORE that about his character.

From the beginning of the series, Hinata is driven. He has passion for what he plays, and he never shies away from expressing that passion even when he’s the only person around that has it. To him it doesn’t matter that he’s short, or that his school has no team, or that none of his friends care about volleyball because he does. He loves volleyball with everything that he is, and nothing can take that away from him.

Even when he loses the first - and only - match of his Junior High career he doesn’t back down. In fact, it only increases his passion ten fold. He sees someone he considers better, the pinnacle of what being a volleyball player is, and instead of being insecure or thinking he might as well stop playing, he takes it as a challenge and uses that rivalry that he then devotes the rest of his life (that we see) to because that’s just who he is. He doesn’t back down, he doesn’t tuck his tail between his legs, he charges forward without a second thought and never brakes.

Not only does he bring out the best in Kageyama- something I’ll get into when I inevitably make a post about him - but almost everyone that’s around him (with the exception of Tsukishima who, if I remember correctly, only gets his head out of his ass when Yamaguchi finally snaps at him). His love for the game absolutely rubs off on everyone around him, so much so that his Junior High friends joined the team only so he could play an official game. He’s the type of person that says they’re going to make it big, be a name that people know someday, and even if it sounds over the top you listen because they say it with so much belief and conviction you catch yourself believing them wholeheartedly.

Hinata makes goals, and he knows what he wants, and he dives for it and that is why I love his character. He isn’t just a good person, he’s an incredible athlete that never backed away at the face of adversity; If anything, I think it made him more eager to run out onto the court.

Anyways, yes, Hinata is definitely in my top favorite characters of the show and if I were on my computer this would probably be so much longer, lol <3

I began Dangan Ronpa 2 and I’m kind of in a weird place.  On one hand, I really like some of the characters and they’re more entertaining than a lot of the ones in the first game.  In fact, I love all of the new changes, story-wise.  Hajime isn’t frustrating to play as because he doesn’t fall for everything, and his somewhat sarcastic inner monologue is great.  I hope it gets turned up a notch later on in the game.  It reminds me of Phoenix Wright’s very snarky dialogue and that’s always a good thing.  I really enjoy the self-doubt he has about himself because that makes the player doubt him so we have a better idea how he feels, something that’s always great.  Video games have a way of making the person playing feel a certain way over other forms of media because the person buying their product has to react themselves and not just sit back and enjoy the show.  It’s always a good thing for the creators to take advantage of that fact.

Monomi is really cute and I feel sorry for her.  The description of “Usami sadly picks up the belts and looks at us with a lonely expression on her face” is both hilarious, and pretty parthetic.  I really would like to know more of her story and I’m definitely looking forward to that.

Byakuya’s finally dead.  Took until the sequel when he actually had some redeeming qualities to his character but hey.  Wish he didn’t die because he’d help with the murder investigations and none of the current cast looks like they’ll be too helpful but…oh well.  I wonder what happened to him, though.  When I saw him, my first thought was, “Geez, he went through a mid-life crisis at the tender age of ‘not old enough to drink’?”  Speaking of old characters, Nagito.  I have no idea where the story’s going with him.  He’s obviously related to Makoto in some form or another but I can’t be sure if he’s actually psycho Makoto, his stoned, evil body double, or what.  In the first trial, he’s basically acting like Makoto who went wrong somewhere and became exactly like Junko, doing awful things for “hope”.  That was really neat and I liked it.  I don’t know how the events of the first game will play into the second game, if at all, but I’m liking it.  The awareness the game has of repeating itself on plotpoints makes it more forgivable so again, Monokuma’s the best.  I like Ibuki a lot but she just reminds me of Genocide Jill so it makes me miss Toko.

The weird place I mentioned?  I like the new setup, characters, and the writing’s really good, but I don’t like the new gameplay and interface.  I don’t know if it’s just because I’m so much more used to the first game, but I don’t like it.  I don’t like how the names of the characters speaking are shoved to the side of the screen where it’s hard to see.  It makes it difficult to memorize their names and that comes to bite me later hen I have truth bullets of 4+ characters’ accounts whose names I can’t remember and don’t have time to go through my truth bullet section of the e-handbook and then scroll through my bullets.  The little dots are gone in telling which statement you’re on and I don’t like it–it’s harder to tell when a statement’s coming up and I need to get ready for it.  I don’t really get the sword thing and I can see that getting really frustrating for me late-game, the new design for the rhythm mini-game makes it less easy to tell where the little dots are and overall harder to do.  It looks snazzier but it doesn’t work for me as well.  Oh, and the last four statement thing got on my nerves.  I was already getting annoyed with my inability to do anything else and I couldn’t phrase the last thing right and didn’t have too much time to think about it.  The new closing argument thing’s a lot easier now, though.  As someone who cheated on it for the first game after the second trial, I like the change a lot.

The walking thing takes forever.  I know it’s there for the little pet thing (I like the little pet thing and I want to name it) but yeah…it’s really slow.  I don’t know, maybe I’m just a really impatient person.  I think I can change the walking speed though?  I’m not sure, I’ll have to go through the settings.

I’m sure I’ll get used to all these changes over time, but you don’t need to fix something that isn’t broken.  I like the meters instead of the individual hearts/stars.  It’s a minimal change but I like it.

OH, I ALMOST SOMEHOW FORGOT, WHAT DID THEY DO TO HANGMAN’S GAMBIT?  WHY?  I WAS TRYING FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES TO SPELL “MEAT SKEWER” AND THAT’S PROBABLY ON ME FOR NOT FIGURING OUT “IRON” BUT COME ON.  WHY DID THEY TAKE OUT THE “HINT” LETTERS?  ENGLISH WORKS VERY DIFFERENTLY FROM JAPANESE SO SOME THINGS LIKE THIS DON’T TRANSLATE VERY WELL.

So yeah, I like the new characters and setting and everything’s really interesting so far, but I suck at the new gameplay, it was very frustrating, and it made me want to toss my computer out of a nearby window.  I still like the game, though, even if I suck at it, can’t remember the mini-tutorial  on how to get skills, and want to change the difficulty setting.  

That sounded passive-aggressive, but I really am enjoying myself.  I’m just not really looking forward to the next trial all that much.  This game has given me the best advice for playing a game any game has ever given me, though.

I ended up with 5 extra save files because Monokuma threatened to delete them.  I knew it probably wouldn’t happen but can’t be too safe, you know?

Hajime is great. He’s complex, incredibly relatable and so sassy (yes, he does keep that up throughout the game). There’s a reason he’s dubbed the best protagonist in the franchise. I’m curious what your guesses on his talent are!

Haha, yeah, when I saw Byakuya I was like “whoa...you really let yourself go, dude.”

Nagito is...yeah, Nagito’s something else. Also, unless you did his FTE’s in the first chapter, you won’t be able to get any events later, so if you didn’t don’t bother (that is, you can still give him gifts, but he won’t tell you anything about himself).

I also felt sorry for Usami/Monomi. She gets no respect from anyone. You’ll find out her story as the plot progresses.

One of the pluses of the second game (IMO) is how much it lovingly mocks the first.

Yeah, I get what you mean about the interface. Shoving the names off to the side struck me as a weird choice as well. But...the more students who die, the less you’ll have to remember, right? (Too soon? Too morbid? Sorry). Sorry you find the new changes worse, though, here’s hoping you soon get the hang of them. I will say the last four statement thing isn’t ALWAYS as bad as it was in the first trial...that was an exceptionally egregrious case.
