Chapter 21
He gives me his inscrutable look, the one I’m already coming to hate. “This is going to be a lot of things, Grace. Easy isn’t one of them.”
And then he’s gone. As usual. Double damn it.
Chapter 21 summary: OMG, Jaxon is carrying Grace. And OMG he smells AMAZING. U GAIS. U GAIS. OHMIGOD. /teenagers who actually think that this is fucking romantic instead of goddamned creepy like the rest of the world does (Please note that the act of carrying her up to the room isn't what I'm angry over. It's literally everything leading up to this point and everything after.)
Anyway, he carries her up to his room. Once there, he assesses the damage, and determines that it's likely only a sprain, rather than a break. He wraps it as Macy leaves to get ice. They then have a MOMENT where he's touching her face, and they almost kiss, but Macy comes back with the ice and ruins everything.
He tells Grace icing instructions, and to stay away from Flint before he leaves.
Chapter 22
For several seconds after Jaxon leaves, I wait for the other shoe to drop…in this case, a rainbow-colored Converse in the form of Macy demanding to know what’s going on between us. Which I can already see is going to be a problem on a lot of levels, most obviously the one where I have no idea about what’s going on between us. If anything. Yes, Jaxon has sought me out twice today, but I have no idea what that means. Or even if it means anything. And what was that parting shot about, anyway? This is going to be a lot of things, Grace. Easy isn’t one of them? Who even says that? Was he saying that he’s interested in me? Or that he isn’t?
The author does realize that she's allowed to do time skips... right? Like not every single thing that happens needs to be reflected upon.
“Oh. My. God. OmigodOmigodOmigod. What just happened?”
I can't.
I'm done.
Goodbye.
“Before I saw how he looks at you.” She closes her eyes and makes a sound very close to the one she made when Jaxon smiled at her. “I wish Cam would look at me like that.”
Further proof that Cam and Macy are headed towards heartbreak central.
Macy grins. “Now that we’ve got that out of the way, there is something I want to talk to you about.” She gets up, crosses to her mini fridge. “But I’m pretty sure you’re not going to like it.”
Chapter 22 summary: After Jaxon leaves, Macy starts to freak out. She asks how it is that in less than 3 days, Grace has the two most popular guys in the school lusting after her. This goes on for way too long, and it's randomly interrupted when Grace gets a text from her BFF back in California. I thought that Heather's text might actually add something to the plot, but that seemed to be asking for way too much.
The second Grace puts her phone down, Macy starts in again about the entire Jaxon situation. She says that she'd warned Grace away from him, because he's always so surly and angry. And Grace gets it, because if the only thing Macy has ever known was the way he'd stormed into the party, of course Macy would be on edge. But Macy goes on to say that when Jaxon is around Grace, he seems different somehow. BECAUSE TRU WUV, or whatever goddamned bullshit. However, Grace reminds Macy over and over that it's literally been three days, and it's weird that Macy is pushing her towards either boy.
Chapter 23
Never Bring an Ice Cream Scoop to a Gun Fight
I had to read this and so do you.
I settle for wrapping my arms around my waist and telling myself that she’s wrong. Even as a little voice inside me warns that she’s not.
Chapter 23 summary: Macy brings out some ice cream, and says that it's an ice cream kind of situation. I don't think that the situation is that dire, but what the hell do I know. I've never felt so upset that ice cream was the only solution.
Anyway, Macy tries to warn Grace away from both boys. Except that she's not going to flat out tell Grace that the reason why they're dangerous is because they're vampires, and the reason why they hate each other is because they're from different vampire groups. So in the end, she says a lot of words, but makes zero sense. The plot literally doesn't move forward at all.
In the end, Macy tells Grace that she and Jaxon might have a bond because of Jaxon's dead brother and Grace's dead parents... but she should be careful, regardless. Grace doesn't feel better following any of this, but I don't know of anybody who would feel better after that bullshit.
