Myunna listened intently to the story that Kurode spun.
It had its highs and lows, tragedy and comedy, but it was all his. His story, his past. He wanted to share it with Myunna, the least he could do since they had become so close in such a short span of time. It would mean a lot to Kurode to get it all off his chest as he strove towards the confidence that he seeked so he could ask Lord Kuromi for her Accolade.
Speaking of his older brother and his journey from the Red Continent to the Blue had Kurode trembling in his fingers. He was a private person, for the most part, so exposing himself like that was a bit nerve wracking. Though Myunna had done nothing but rightfully earn his trust, the vulnerability required spooked Kurode.
Regardless, what was that saying? That a burden shared is a burden halved. Perhaps it was possible for Kurode to learn something from airing out his own problems to a kind, listening ear such as Myunna’s.
It was even possible that he might learn something from Myunna as Myunna had already earned Lord Cogimyuun’s Accolade - and Myunna was not exactly a shining beacon of courage. He was kind, yes, and talented with healing magic but he was not a paragonic knight like others that they had met. Instead, he was talented in his own unique and special way.
Kurode envied that. He concluded that there was strength in variety and so, he hoped whatever made him weak, could make him strong, too. Just like with Myunna and his crybaby antics.
As Kurode finished up his tale, already, he could feel his load lighten. His chest didn’t seem quite so constricted, his tongue not quite so tied now either since he had laid his past bare to Myunna who nodded along to the haphazard flow of events. The little things that had turned into a big thing with big consequences.
“So. That’s it. That’s everything that happened to me prior to meeting you here in Kuromi’s kingdom.” Kurode said.
He finished up awkwardly. Kurode rubbed the back of his neck and couldn’t look at Myunna for fear of disappointing him. Instead, he looked at his shoes, he flexed his toe so that his boot would bow. Anything to distract from how he worried that he would come across as a coward or some other creature to be pitied rather than as someone who deserved to be a squire.
It was a lot to take in but Kurode had no doubt that Myunna would be sympathetic as he processed. It was merely his nature to be worried, no matter how irrational.
   “Wow…” Myunna breathed at last.
   “Yeah…” Kurode mumbled.
“Myunna is surprised to learn that you are not from the Blue Continent at all… And yes, you fit in so well with everyone here as though you were born among us.” Myunna gasped and marvelled.
Kurode shrugged. He didn’t have much explanation for that. The Red and Blue Continents were both home to people who were kind and outgoing, the sorts who welcomed anyone with open arms and welcomed them like they were long lost family. Sure, they had their quirks and differences in culture but for the most, it was a pleasant transition despite the turbulence that caused it.
He couldn’t really pick one over the other in terms of favouritism. The My Melody Kingdom was always going to be his homeland but the Kuromi Kingdom had become Kurode’s heartland nonetheless as he endeavoured to swear himself to its lord.
“So, what do you think?” Kurode asked. “Any wisdom you want to share as a knight born and bred of the Blue Continent?”
Then, without missing a beat, “Myunna is glad you ran away.” Myunna announced.
And all without a hint of patriotism, either. Myunna’s cadence was pure with care and compassion for Kurode. Even so, Kurode had not been expecting such a trumpetting from his dear companion.
Kurode’s shoulders prickled and he straightened up. He sat slovenly on his bed, Myunna adjacent to him, perched on a chair at his desk. Myunna beamed as he met Kurode’s surprised expression.
   “You are?” Kurode asked, incredulous.
“Mm, mm, Myunna is.” Myunna replied, sing-song. “It sounds to Myunna, you were not getting the care and support that you deserved. Your brother was taking all the sunlight and nutrients. How were you meant to compete with that, Kurode?”
“Oh, I, uh guess.” Kurode mumbled.
“It’s just like gardening! We all need some place we can thrive, where we can get all the ingredients we need to be nourished and Myunna is glad that the Blue Continent and Kuromi’s Kingdom can be that place for you.” Myunna explained, blithe. “Of course, Myunna is sad that running away to a whole new country is preferable to being in your brother’s shadow… and Myunna does hope Kurode can reconcile with his brother but… Until that day, Myunna is glad you ran away.”
Kurode hazarded a smile and looked at Myunna. His fluffy blonde hair was haloed by the mid-afternoon sunlight coming through the translucent, purple curtains of his quarters. He looked cherubic in how kind and thoughtful he was, conveying himself how only he could - and so sweetly, too. Ever earnest and true.
Kurode felt his heart skip a beat, his hand moved to his pulse in his chest. He could feel it, on his fingertips. He was glad that he had run away as well now.
   “Thank you, Myunna.” Kurode said.
Myunna got up, his loose and frilly clothes flounced and bounced around him and he came closer. He took Kurode’s hands and held them. He played with them slightly as he tried to cheer Kurode up. The nervous tension had passed and for it, praise and consolation was needed - or so thought Myunna. Kurode didn’t mind.
It was exactly such affection that was further making him glad that he had run away, after all. Especially if it meant he would become all but destined to have met Myunna.
“Myunna hopes you are able to find the confidence that you seek here in the Blue Continent.” Myunna wished him all the best with a shining smile.
“Thank you, Myunna. I love it here - and I love it here with you, in particular.” Kurode replied.
Myunna stiffened, as though shocked that Kurode could be as equally sweet with him as he could. He turned embarrassed, a fluster to his face and he looked away. Kurode chuckled at his expense and tightened his grip on Myunna’s hands, not letting him slip away in modesty.
“I mean it.” Kurode insisted. “I love it here, with you, and Lord Kuromi, the trainees. It truly feels like home to me, more than the Red Continent ever did. You mean the world to me, Myunna, as the first to love me in any kingdom, any continent.”
“Myu-Myuna is glad to hear it.” Myunna squeaked.
Kurode smiled. That really was the word of the hour: glad, and how it entwined with his act of rebellion, of running away. For so long, it had felt like a cowardly retreat and betrayal of the realm which had reared him but not anymore. Not when it earned something akin to an accolade from his beloved Myunna whom he would never have met otherwise.
He truly did love Myunna - and the Blue Continent at large.
