Hi! I stumbled upon ur work about three days ago and binge-read umbra by reading every night and I have a lot to say!! It might be split into many asks so I’ll label them (hopefully they don’t get eaten). I made some writings for almost every chapter, where I wrote my unfiltered thoughts. I didn’t make them too long to focus on reading instead. I hope this makes ur day!! (1/?) -☘️

Ch. 1 - Tae characterization is so good??? I actually did not read the pairing and thought he was Namjoon because of how smart and clever his dialogue was but was pleasantly surprised!! I actually really liked how he is characterized because most fics portray Tae as playful and mischievous but I really like how u included his more serious personality!! It was a breath of fresh air honestly. Ch. 2 - Must protect Chuu (2/?) -☘️

Ch. 3 - I love the MC, must protect her too. She is smitten but oblivious. Sir Thomas won’t help you, girl. Sorry. Ch. 4 I have a feeling Aila will maker her jealous 👀 The fact that Tae’s alias starts with V is a very nice detail. (Edit: I didn’t know Vante was his artist name! But still a very cool alias). Ch. 5 - Nvm Aila I’m hit with ANGST (in a good way!). Ch. 6 - “Your smile is prettier” I— *combusts* (3/?) -☘️

Ch. 7 - My heart is ded (“the sight is beautiful.”) the arranged marriage gave me cardiac shock. Ch. 11 - Lots of LOTR imagery in my head. Ch. 12 - Omg it all comes full circle. The setup for the colosseum with the flashback was SO satisfying! And Alpha too 🥺 Though I wished MC said “thank you” or made a meaningful look before passing out. Also really wanted to read into Hoseok’s feelings at that time. his last line was also badass af. (4/?) -☘️

Ch. 13 - I feel like the shapeshifter’s backstory will be so tragic ;-; Ch. 14 - Hoseok deserves a hug 🥺 Ch. 15 - Hope all five dragons end up fighting together that’d be so epic. And I ooh— 👁👄👁 Taehyung’s tattoos??? The plot thickens even more 😭 (5/?) -☘️

I deliberately left out chapters 8-10 because they are my favorite of the whole series so far. Idk if it’s because I’m an empath, but I felt that all of my feelings were concentrated on the bottom of my stomach, leaving my extremities and torso feeling numb and hollow. Feeling invisible and not worth much is something I personally battled with some time ago so I understood the MC a lot and felt for her. That’s why they’re my favorite chapters. Because they are raw and filled with emotion that moved me, and anything that emotionally moves a person is art. I think these chapters were the points of highest tension between MC and Tae’s relationship, which increased the emotion during the chapters and the payoff that came later. 

Also wanted to give special mention to a few aspects of your writing in general that I loved. 

Endings - you make amazing cliffhangers??? Like every time I finish reading a chapter I want to immediately click on the next one. I needed to stop myself so many times from reading for more than 3 hours because I could not put my phone down 😭 but that’s the mark of a very good book!!

Pacing - I never felt like the chapters were boring or went too fast/slow. Every scene was important for many aspects, whether for character building, plot movement, world building, etc. It’s like each chapter hits the perfect balance between plot and everything else involved in writing. 

World building - immersing myself in the world you created was not difficult. It was so easy to imagine the world that you created that it reminded me a lot of Tolkien’s world building in LOTR and The Hobbit. The world feels lived in with established history, language, culture, and believable characters. It feels *lived* in, and that’s an amazing achievement.

Characters and development - In this essay I will— no seriously I love all the characters. Everyone has flaws and arcs they go through and it’s all so wonderfully set up and developed that it’s extremely satisfying to read the improvement/conclusion of a character’s development throughout the story. Especially MC’s character development. Writing in first person definitely increased the intimacy lessened the distance between the reader (me) and the MC, as well as the MC with the rest of the characters.

i love how you thought it was a namjoon fic at first bc i honestly think umbra could EASILY be a nj fic!!!! it fits his persona so well!!! if anyone feels like reading it with nj in your head go ahead!!! i don’t think i would’ve written it much differently if it was about him 🥺

also i’m honored and lowkey proud that you complimented the world-building bc phew it’s my fav parts to write but also the hardest 😭😭 it’s so hard to make everything connect and make sense in the end!! although i think i would’ve made some corrections if i was writing it rn, i’m still proud of it 🥺🥺 not tolkien level ofc but i aspire to get there someday!! to write a world so intricate and iconic like he did is my biggest dream tbh 😊😊

ch 8-10 are also my favorite parts! i wrote them through gritted teeth bc the tension was so HIGH,, sometimes i go back just to read the kiss scene again ✨✨btw i don’t care about wall of texts AT ALL, this right here is the sole reason why i still update this blog! you have no idea how motivated and hyped this makes writers/content creators overall 🥺🥺🥺 thank you soooooo much for sending me your thoughts!!!
