wait what are people mad at alya about?? i never understood that could you explain?

(writing this intro after I wrote the rest) I try to keep salt off my blog but this is something that really bothers me about the fandom (though it’s been getting better) and I kind of want to vent to get it off my chest and put it behind me. Overall, of course these are fictional characters and people are allowed to not like them and have their opinions, but… I just really like Alya, and constantly seeing hate for her in all forms of fan media for almost a YEAR after chameleon aired has kind of gotten to me.

Of course different people may have different reasons for not liking Alya, but here’s basically the main/most reoccurring reasons that I see.

people hate alya because:

1. marinette got last pick on where to sit on seat-change day because she was the last person to show up to class. literally that’s what happened. people try to spin it like it was some horrible malicious thing that Alya sat with her boyfriend on seat change day, but literally the only reason marinette sat in the back was because she was the last to show up. if she didn’t sit in the back, somebody else would’ve had to. this seat change only ended up lasting a single class period btw

2. she “believes lila over her best friend”, or, as I like to call it, “wants to see the good in people and believe both of them” (she never claimed that marinette was lying about lila. alya treats everything marinette says about lila with an air of “well, I believe that you believe that, marinette, but you know you have a tendency to blow things out of proportion…” which she DOES). I could go on about this for a while but basically, she’s a bit gullible and overly trusting because she’s 14. that’s it. she likes lila but she loves marinette too.

(and before anyone goes on about “but lila’s lies are so obviously fake!” yes….. that’s called being a cartoon……. it’s a cartoon… things are a bit exaggerated so that children can understand that lila is lying and add some humor to the show…. it’s called suspension of disbelief)

3. she, a passionate 14 year old with no formal training or education, did an interview with someone who claimed ladybug saved them (aka something that happens all the time to tons of parisians and is a very reasonable/believable claim)….. for her blog……… that she does for fun…………. and didn’t………. “check her sources”? how do you check your sources for an interview with someone who claims to have been saved by ladybug? are interviewers even held accountable for fact checking Literally Everything an interviewee says? even if it’s just mindless/vague/unprovable shit like “ladybug and i are like this *crosses fingers*”? she’s 14? this isn’t a professional newspaper? it’s a passion blog? it would’ve been impossible to fact-check unless she personally interviewed ladybug herself who is almost impossible to get ahold of? hewwo? am i missing something?

4. they forgot literally every other aspect of alya’s personality and hyperfocus on these 3 things because she’s a confident poc so people want to believe she must have a cruel side to her, even though she doesn’t

(bonus: also she was a bit inconsiderate to Juleka in reflekdoll, but this episode came out way after the alya hate began and it was not a malicious thing so much as alya just being oblivious to the fact Juleka was actually having a panic attack. again, she’s 14, it happens, she wasn’t trying to be inconsiderate, she just wasn’t paying close enough attention to the situation and was a bit hyperfocused on helping marinette. this is brought up way less than the other 3 points, anyway, but I thought I’d mention it)

Spray bottle- he cleans up his brothers messes- also he wears gloves and apparently thats enough for brain to make connection....also he probably has used a spray bottle as a form of discipline at some point-

Mammon

Pineapple- ok more likely than not, this is a colour association thing, but this one works as a nickname- Pineapples- but also because back in the 1700′s-1800′s a single pineapple costed $8000 in today’s money- and renting a pineapple- yes renting a pineapple started at $5000- ok I’m way off track now but Mammon in as much as he is sweet he can be a little tart when it comes to you spending time with someone else-

Levi

Chapstick- again, I don’t really know why- I really don’t know why until I start typing and then I’m too lazy to delete the though process sorry y’all- maybe it has to do with how much he snacks and the energy drinks he has- between salt from chips and not drinking actual water, he would use chapstick to stop his lips from getting dry because he doesn’t like the way they look or feel when they are...idk man I got like.. five mL left of brain juice bear with me-

Satan

Rattle (like...a baby rattle-)- because he’s the baby of the family probably- IKIK he fell as full grown-ass man but he’s still the youngest- also if you’ve never had the experience of holding an angry child and giving them a toy I encourage you to be careful- they find it funny when you say no more hitting-

If not a rattle, then curtains- reason being that he’s always putting on a show, always hiding away his anger while he puts on an act and hopes nobody provokes him-

Asmo

Dew drop- (ok that’s my nickname for him now shhh) but honestly I don’t really know why I associate this with Asmo. Maybe it’s because to me seeing dew in the morning is a simple pleasure. While Asmo is far from simple, perhaps it’s moreso that people need to see him as more than a demon that only wants sexual pleasure- but little things too..little things to make our little dew drop content

Beel

A Lovebird- Again, idk! Maybe it’s the colouring some lovebirds are, (green, yellow, red-) that make me think of mangoes and just...Beel’s red hair and bottomless appetite- also he’s just really sweet and struggles to be by himself.

Belphie

Hedgehog- uhh...first nocturnal animal that came to mind without wings? Probably- or horns on Belphie vs little spikes- will hiss at you if displeased, will sleep around you if comfortable...:D

Barbatos

Campfire- hUH ok so probably has to do with the fact he seems the most mysterious to me, but very intriguing, almost like when someone tells a story around a campfire...there’s a different feeling being around a fire and telling a story versus anywhere else, but combined with the sounds of the forest, a bright moon and stars above, and an enchanting tale to listen too? Idk to me that feels like almost the same energy Barb exudes all the time-

Diavolo

An Old Stuffy/Doll- As far as we know, Diavolo was an only child growing up, we don’t know how long it’s been since his father has been asleep, and idk if it says later on in the game, but there’s been no mention of a mother. Diavolo likely entertained himself often when he was younger, and clearly didn’t make very many friends until he was a little older. Maybe it’s just me because I was an only child for ten years and wanted siblings, but an old toy...one day was the last day he stopped playing with it- likely the day he grew too lonely to play pretend or he was made to mature whether he liked or not...so now he holds on to that playful spirit because it was something he missed having for a while- (hnn might write a Diavolo angst piece we shall see we shall see I don’t wanna hurt my baby!-)

Solomon

A Cracked Mirror- actually for once not going to make fun of Solomon and say he’s bad luck just his cooking but rather where this superstition started- a Greek foretelling strategy of catoptromancy (the use of a reflective object/surface to tell the future), where looking into a mirror or bowl of water would reveal a person’s soul- if the reflection was cracked, it symbolized the person’s soul being damaged- now I don’t know about you guys but being immortal sounds like a lot of opportunity for pain- it’s not like a cracked mirror is impossible to fix, but it takes time and patience, and if MC can show him that then maybe- maybe he can lower his guard a bit and let them in so they can help him rebuild what may be broken for now. 

Simeon

White Marble- mostly pure white, with streaks of grey or black..not everything is clear to or as an angel, just what is “good” and what is “bad” and with enough questioning and trial- marble chips easily..but can also be repaired easily. Is there one clear “right” path?- no and mistakes will be made but they can be fixed...most of the time- (oof this is more abstract than I wanted it to be but fuck it brain juice at 0)

Luke

Flowering Meadow- is this on one of his cards? Idk- but a meadow full of growth, a place to run, a place to let go- there’s no rules in a meadow..just be a kid- Luke has been through a lot and I think its about having room to grow- having room to improve...yeah :3

You're absolutely fine, anon! You're right, I shouldn't have tagged it with Marichat at all, if only because I should have framed the post not-in-the-context-of-Ladrien. I easily could have said what I meant to say without the salty take on it. It was a pretty hastily made post and I was mostly trying to track my train of thought, which involved Marichat, but that's beside the point.

The thing I will point out about the Marichat salt tag (or any other salt tag) is that there's really not a better solution for tagging other than to tag [#marichat salt]. Yes, it WILL show up in the main Marichat tag, and that's unfortunate; Tumblr's tagging system should NOT do that. But tags aren't ONLY for organization within the search function; they also help people organize their dashboards and such.

When I tag something [#marichat salt], I'm saying, "If you don't want to see this post, I gave you fair warning to blacklist the tag." The argument could be made that the post should be tagged with [#ml salt] or [#ml fandom salt], but some people may want to blacklist [#marichat salt] but not the other one(s).

The MAIN issue would be if the amount of [#marichat salt] content was flooding [#marichat], which isn't the case. (A very real example of that is the way that [#minecraft youtube] tends to flood [#minecraft]. While the MCYT is part of the Mineblr community, there are far more MCYT fans, and Minecraft fans who just want to see cool builds/texture packs/redstone builds, etc. Yes, I do know about this drama because I exist within the community. No, I do not watch the DSMP. No, I will not be engaging with discourse about it.)

If people don't want to see [#marichat salt] in the Marichat tag, they need to blacklist it. That's not necessarily fair, but unless the fandom as a whole could agree on a tag for Marichat salt that doesn't involve the word Marichat, it would be unfair to NOT tag Marichat salt with [#marichat salt]. The only things coming to mind are [#mc salt], which probably exists within at least one other fandom, or [#ml mc salt]. That then raises the questions of what the other love square sides would be abbreviated to. None of this has a clear answer and I'm not proposing other solutions, more pointing out that there is no "right" solution for the position I was put in other than to not have mentioned Marichat at all, which I acknowledge, I should have done in this particular instance.

Of course, none of this is against you, anon, and I'm glad you sent your ask earlier. You were right and, honestly, I'm glad to have deleted the post.
