watched some goranger today so i have now officially sampled the Original Series for each of the toku big three. i gotta say from the little i’ve seen goranger is my least favorite... i love sentai for the zany colorful characters and fun quirky episodic plots, and goranger was not quite there yet so it just felt kind of... what’s the point? without many of the really distinguishing sentai tropes it just felt like i was watching a showa rider without the beating heart of kamen rider’s tragedy and themes and ishinomori’s political convictions. and i was surprised cause i’ve also seen zubat and that’s not rider but it also has that thematic/emotional forward momentum of the tragic lone hero and in a way kind of distills a lot of that idea from rider so i was surprised at how... thematically empty goranger felt compared to my previous ishinomori experiences? i really want to know about the production details behind this series and the journey from idea to show and all that cause i know those things for kamen rider but not goranger which leaves me feeling kind of in the dark. but yeah i don’t think i will be watching more goranger but it was fun to see where the legend originates from. and also to watch ishinomori’s “miyauchi but cowboy” fetish continue to develop since v3 on the way to reaching its final form in zubat. also the suits go hard, momoranger’s is my favorite
