“Five minutes till the show starts, (Y/N),” my director said as he poked his head into my dressing room. I smiled at him as he left. When the door closed behind him, I sighed heavily.
I knew I should’ve been happy. It was the opening night of the play I had been working for months on, and I was the lead. It was a dream come true for me, and normally I would be ecstatic.
I was ecstatic, but I was also feeling down. I had received a text from my boyfriend, Dom, saying his flight home from tour had been delayed and he didn’t think he’d make it to my opening night, but he’d get to the next show he could get to.
Sure, there was plenty of shows he could come to, and I was happy taht I’d get to see Dom in the audience eventually, but there was just something about being able to see him on my opening night. That was the big night, and I wanted to be able to share it with him.
Another knock came at my door, snapping me out of my trance. “Places (Y/N)!”
“Coming!” I called back.
I decided to send Dom a quick text before going on stage. “About to take the stage. Wish me luck.”
Almost immediately, Dom responded, “Good luck baby, see you soon!”
I smiled at the message before exiting my dressing room.
My co-stars were stood around in a circle together. When one of them saw me, he joked, “About time you joined us.”
I simply stuck my tongue out at him in response as I joined the circle. We took each other’s hands as our director spoke.
“Tonight is our big night. You guys have worked so hard these past few months, I have no doubt in my mind that you’re all going to kill it. Just remember: be safe, don’t get too in your heads, and we’re getting celebratory pizza and drinks when the show ends.”
We all cheered at this before doing a pre-show chant we came up with during rehearsals. We took our places on the stage and the curtain opened, revealing the sold out audience in front of us. I felt my heart race upon seeing how many people were sat before me. Of course, I knew the show was sold out, but I kept forgetting how big the theater was. It was one thing to know how many tickets were sold, but it felt like a whole other thing to see the room packed with people.
My co-star entered the stage and began to speak his lines. As he spoke, I let my eyes wander to the front row of the audience and rested on a familiar face. I felt my heart race as I saw Dom smiling up at me, throwing me a small wave and winking at me. I was so shocked, I forgot where I was for a moment. It wasn’t until my co-star repeated my character’s name that I remembered.
I looked up to see my co-star looking at me expectantly. I smiled at him and spoke my line, pushing on despite my slight mistake.
I couldn’t help but sneak a glance at the audience every now and then. I couldn’t believe Dom was there. My heart was race with happiness this time. I had so many questions for him, but I knew I had to get through the almost two hour long play before I could ask him anything, and I also knew that was going to feel like an eternity.
When the play ended, we were given a standing ovation. We did our final bows before exiting the stage and celebrating an amazing first show. I raced to my dressing room to change out of my costume. As I was pulling on my normal clothes, someone knocked at my door.
“Almost ready!” I called as I fumbled to button my jeans.
“Be a bit quicker, love, I haven’t seen you in months.”
I opened the door before his sentence was even finished and wrapped my arms around Dom’s neck. He laughed before planting a kiss on my lips.
“What are you doing here?” I asked when I finally pulled myself away from him. “I thought your flight was delayed or cancelled, I thought you weren’t gonna get in.”
“It was really early, actually,” Dom explained. “I wanted to come surprise you at your last rehearsal, but I figured I probably wouldn’t be allowed, so I decided I wanted to surprise you tonight instead.”
I playfully hit his arm. “You should’ve come to the rehearsal! I was so upset that you weren’t going to be here, I was honestly afraid I was going to bomb my opening night!”
“I’m sorry!” Dom laughed, rubbing his arm. “I thought it’d be a sweet surprise. I won’t do it again.”
I smiled and kissed his cheek. “I’m glad you were here. I wanted nothing more than to be able to spend this night with you.”
Dom smiled and pulled me into his arms again. “You did amazing, (Y/N). Not that I’m surprised, I knew you were going to blow everyone away. You’ve worked so hard for this.”
I buried my head in Dom’s chest and took in his familiar scent. I was so happy to have him there with me. I was glad he had made it to my opening night, and that the night had gone so well. I couldn’t wait to be able to do this for the next few months.
Our reunion was interrupted by one of my co-stars. “Hey lovebirds, we’re going to Josh’s for the pizza and drinks, you guys coming or not.”
I looked up at Dom. Part of me wondered if he had any other special surprises up his sleeve for the day.
He smiled and said, “Yeah, we’re coming! You guys lead the way, I’ll drive the two of us over.”
My co-star gave us a thumbs up and walked away. I smiled at Dom and kissed him once more before the two of us finally left for his car. It was definitely the best night of my life, and I was glad I got to share it with the love of my life.
