She wanted adventure, always had. And yet, when she got a job at a newspaper after college, a colleague observed, "In the real world of the Great Adventure, she found it difficult to approach strangers." She could have been an artist, a writer. Had she not married John Kennedy, friends thought, she would have excelled at both. Either she didn't trust herself or didn't have the nerve to face the public attention. At an exhibition of Peter Beard's work in the early '70s, she pulled the artist aside and told him, "I wish I could do what you're doing-but I can't.' Beard noted her frustration with herself.
