seven comfort movies

I was tagged by @alliecatcorner to share my 7 comfort movies!

1. Catnapped! (1995)

I first saw the trailer for this movie in the VHS for Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose when I was maybe 6? The main theme’s song was repetitive and bright colors of cats turning into balloons and a strange Godzilla-sized dog intrigued the hell out of me, but alas the movie evaded me for years. Until while browsing an FYE as a sixth grader (?) and I found the movie on DVD! 

The movie meant a lot to me as a child as I found it sweet and exciting, but it meant even more to me during the time when my dog had passed away. 

The movie tells the story of knuckle-headed, but good hearted Toriyasu, his excitable sister Meeko and their lost dog Papadoll. After Papadoll goes missing, the two are summoned to the world of Banipal Witt, a land of anthropomorphic cats and their ruler Buburina who is using Papadoll to terrorize its inhabitants. Toriyasu with the help of some rebels, must save Papadoll and return home all within a day lest he and sister also become Buburina’s monsters!

It’s movie that few know, but I try my best to get people to watch a hidden gem like Catnapped!. 

2. The Whisper of the Heart (1995)

TWotH is by far my favorite Ghibli movie. It’s the only feature by Yoshifumi Kondo who unfortunately passed away after completing this movie. I find his direction while still slow paced, meaningfully so and effective. I would have loved to see other Ghibli features with his touch, but alas it will never be.

TWotH stars Shizuku, a bookworm and fledgling writer who slowly falls for her classmate and aspiring violinist Seiji. Their relationship is rocky at first, both finding the other annoying, but both bond over their shared passion toward their chosen art. Both promise the other to throw themselves into their work and meet again when they’ve finished a goal. And it’s just an overall heartwarming tale of two young people impassioned by a love much greater than them.

I watched this while I was writing Crimson and Clover and living at home going to uni and my boyfriend dormed away from me working toward his degree, so I relate a lot to Shizuku’s circumstances too. ☺️

3. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

This is a movie that gets better once you revisit it. At first glance Kiki is a young witch looking for her place in the world and that’s all the movie is about. But her figuring out what kind of witch she wants to be and staying in love with flying and delivering is something all young artists, passionates and anyone who has a hobby can relate too. This thing that I love - is it worth my time? Am I making a fool out of myself? Should I give up? Are all questions I ask myself all the time.

Miyazaki has a way of telling fantastical tales like Kiki’s Delivery Service about a witch and her love for flying that perfectly symbolize the relationship between an artist and their art. It’s comforting because we’ve all been there and ultimately, your art is not a waste of time.

4. Animal Crossing: The Movie (2006)

So, it’s no secret that Animal Crossing has been a huge part of my life ever since I played Population Growing (2001). This movie has many magical parts and relatable parts. It’s about a girl named Ai who moves to an animal village and learns to live on her own among her new mysterious and friendly villagers. She grows close particularly to her neighbor Sally (Margie, in the games) and learns about her desire to become a famous fashion designer. 

Playing the games is not necessary for enjoyment. You will mostly feel happy, if not a little bittersweet after. Also listening to the live version of K.K. Bossa is enough to give it a watch!  

5. Ratatouille (2007)

This is the best Pixar movie. Period.

Ratatouille is sort of a meme because of the premise of a rat controlling a lanky man in the kitchen is really funny, but this movie is so much more than it’s funky little premise. With the through line, “Anyone can cook,” the movie tells the audience that you can do anything you are passionate about, not necessarily just cooking, by telling the tale of the most unlikely chef that could ever be. A rat who wants to be a chef, aka food service’s number one enemy? But still Remy is determined by his love for food to bring that same fervor to others and refuses to give up or be bound to the odds given to him by his species. 

Another thing I love is how he says, “I hate taking. I want to make things.” He recognizes the negative stereotype his people have and wants to prove to the humans he has something to offer, all rats are capable are more than just stealing. It’s a gorgeous message for everyone that you are more than your circumstances or what people tell you are. You can be anything. Anyone can cook. 

6. Hercules (1997)

There’s a lot to love about Hercules between the absolutely creative new art style used for the characters, the clever pop culture references like the air-hercs, or even just the humor. What I love the most is the characterization of Hercules. 

It’s best encapsulated in the scene when Hercules sings “I Can Go the Distance,” which explains his feeling of ostracization from those around him and the lines of “I dream of a far off place where people cheer when they see my face and voice keeps saying, ‘This is where I’m meant to be,’” always gets me. I really admired how Hercules just goes off to learn who he is and then throws himself so strongly into becoming a hero all so that he can finally feel like he belongs... He didn’t wallow - he changed his circumstances. It’s empowering to see.  I won’t drone on too much longer lol stan Meg

7. The Little Mermaid (1989)

I often get really irritated when people zone in on Ariel’s infatuation with Eric and decide that is the ONLY reason she wanted life on land. It’s like they ignore her cove of thingamabobs or her overbearing father who never taught her or sisters anything about the surface. Eric was just another reason for her to break away and be free. Ariel’s bravery, wit and passion is admirable and it’s so wrong to diminish any of those traits just because she was in love. 

One of my favorite scenes is when her father, who finally realizes Ariel is serious about life on land and her love for Eric, not only gives her legs, but the most beautiful, sparkling purple gown. It couldn’t be anymore different than how Ursula discarded by leaving her naked while her father wrapped her nicely and lovingly and finally ready for life above. I just find that very touching.

pls I can already already see yall fighting over movie chararters😭 I just get the vibe y’all met in a really weird way like he was reaching over to grab a random ass toy and you were too and bam!!! Talking, numbers exchanged. He instantly fell in love with you dude. Like gyu isn’t one to simp but your the exception here. Like dude had a big smile when you responded to his text message. Will he ever tell you that he would bounce up like a puppy whenever he got even a notification hoping it was you?? No. Never. That never happened I swear. She didn’t know how to explain that, yes, her friends had been great, but going alone wasn’t in the plan. Every movie and show she had seen portrayed it as this big romantic event and she’d missed out on that because nobody asked her and she had been too afraid to ask anyone else. She wanted to wear her dress, get a corsage, and slow dance. It was stupid and archaic, but that didn’t stop her from wanting it like burning. If she thought about it too much, she could still feel that crushing hope that grew each day while she waited to be asked and that pervasive fear stopping her from asking anyone.

She wanted to kiss him like he was the darkest night sky and her lips had the power to make stars.

Alice waited—wanting to hear it, wanting to run, wanting, wanting, always waiting and wanting.

chapter 34, i’m dying, how will they fix it in one chapter:

“I wish it felt like this stupid, small thing I could crush in my hand, but it doesn’t. I wish it were some line in the sand that I could hop, skip, and jump over, but it’s not. It matters to him enough that the only thing he could say to me was that he cares, which you know, comparatively, wasn’t even that bad, but I can’t stop crying, because I’m pretty sure my heart’s breaking in there.

“A year ago, I would have said whatever. Sure. Yeah. Okay. But not now. Because I really, really like him, he knows everything, and he couldn’t answer me, because it matters enough to make him pause. Just that one stupid, small thing.”

Alice stared at him, eyes wide, mouth agape. That kind of declaration was the bread and butter of romance movies, and it was for her.

On the list of things Alice loved about Takumi, touching him was definitely in the top five. Resolutely she added kissing him to that list. Kisses were not supposed to be like this. They were nice and soft and made her feel warm inside, special, when done right, but were overly wet and vomit inducing when they weren’t. overall review: i fuckin...love this book...it cuts you right to the core and doesn't mess around and the characters are so real and layered and imperfect and messy, and i can’t believe this is this author’s debut novel, like Damn. it is so good, and she is so brave for putting it all out there like that. best book ever 9.5/10 (half a point off for making me think about supernatural, but otherwise: perfect.)

I’m sorry this took me ages again. I chose to do Junghope! I kind of changed things aroundbecause I had a bit of trouble weaving in their “little” years while making itsemi-realistic. So, instead of Kook accidentally mentioning his crush whilethey’re super young, he’s in high school already. Aaaaand, the “reveal” parttook a different turn than I expected. Hope you don’t mind!

Jungkook was content…at least he thought so. He had a goodhome and family, his grades were decent, and his precious Hoseok hyung wasalways by his side. They’ve been the best of friends since Jungkook was a babyin diapers and Hoseok just two years older than him while their motherschatted. Jungkook was always the quieter of the two, the introvert, which meanthe spent most of his time with the older and only him. It wasn’t surprisingthat he found his middle school self staring at high school Hoseok a second toolong, thinking about him whenever he wasn’t in his immediate perimeter, imaginingwhat it’d be like to kiss him.

Now that he was a high school freshman, it was hard not tojust explode and confess. Hoseok was pretty oblivious for the most part whichmade Jungkook’s job of hiding his growing crush that much easier but it alsomeant he let his guard down that much easier as well.

“Hyung, are you really that scared? This one is reallybadly made.” Hoseok had his face tucked into Jungkook’s side as the girl in thehorror movie opened the door. Movie nights were their tradition since they wereold enough to even understand movies and it was Jungkook’s turn to choose thistime.

“Yeah, says you Mr. I-can-beat-up-a-ghost.” Jungkook rolledhis eyes but smiled anyways, secretly enjoying the proximity of his hyung’sbody.

“You know I’d beat up any ghost if it threatened to hurtyou, Hoseokie.” He smiled, eyes crinkling in mirth.

“Yah! Just because I have a fear like normal people doesnot suddenly take away my hyung status. I demand respect you big baby.”

“Yes, yes hyung. Do you want me to call you Daddy whileyou’re at it?”

A millisecond after he says it, Jungkook knows he’d fuckedup. He had not meant to say that and has no idea why his mind thought ‘Daddy’was a good word to use. He’s horrified by the reality that those exact wordsjust came out of his mouth so casually (no, he hasn’t fantasized about Hoseokbeing Daddy thank you very much) and he can definitely feel his hyung frozenbeside him.

“I-I did not mean that. Oh my god…Oh. My. God. I’m so sorry.”He doesn’t know what else to say and buries his face in his hands but he’s surethe tips of his ears are burning in embarrassment.

Hoseok lets out a nervous laugh, “Yeah, no problem. Just ajoke…” He eyes Jungkook warily and the younger bemoans the sudden, possiblyirreversible, change in the atmosphere.

“Um, I just remembered my mom needs help with cookingtonight. You know, pot luck and all.” Before Jungkook can even reply, Hoseok isstanding up and puling his jacket on, heading out the door with a quick ‘bye’and just the sound of the door closing to accompany him. Jungkook groans andspends the rest of his night in fitful sleep.

The next few days, Hoseok pretends everything is normal andon the outside, they did seem normal.Jungkook knew better. He noticed the way the older didn’t immediately throw hisarm around his shoulder, the way he called him ‘Jungkook’ instead of ‘Kookie,’the way he cringed whenever Jungkook so much as look at him too long. Thislasts for a whole two months before the stress of junior year distracts forcesthe incident back into the depths of Hoseok’s mind and allow their relationshipto return to the original familiarity and comfort. For that, Jungkook isforever grateful for all the tests and projects even though they’re the causebehind the elder’s sleep-deprivation.

They hung out like normal, met each other after school towalk to either of their houses to relax or study, sat next to each other atlunch while sharing earbuds, it was just them again. And Jungkook thanked theheavens for fixing things.

Over the next few days, Hoseok started to seemuncomfortable again, but this time was different. He wasn’t uncomfortablearound Jungkook (in fact he lit up when they met) but something was definitelybothering him.

“Hyung,” Jungkook placed a gentle hand on Hoseok’s shoulderand the older jumped so hard he felt guilty for startling him, “Are you okay?You’re really twitchy lately.”

Hoseok tried to smile in an attempt to reassure him but itcame out looking more like a thinly concealed grimace. “I’m fine, Kookie-ah.”

“You know you can tell me right? I’ll help you anyway Ican.” He looked up at Hoseok in concern. He’d fight anyone that made hisprecious hyung frown more than he smiled.

“Of course, I’ll tell you if I need to. Don’t worry aboutme. Now come on, weren’t we going to get ice cream today?” Jungkook’s eyessparkled at the mention of the sweet treat and he wasted no time in draggingHoseok up and towards their favorite little ice cream shop.

Jungkook was swinging their intertwined hands togetherhappily. They’ve always been comfortable with this time of contact and paid nomind to it.

Jungkook was busy scanning the menu, trying to decide whichflavor to try this time (and what flavor to convince Hoseok to get so theycould share) when he felt a sudden squeeze to his hand.

He looked beside him in confusion, “Hoseokie?”  He followed Hoseok’s line of sight and landedon an intimidating looking male, taller than even Jungkook.

“Do you know him?” He noticed the other swallow harshly,eyes darting around, and after years of being so close with Hoseok let Jungkookrealize that these were signs of anxiousness and discomfort.

The man started to get closer to them and Hoseok’s grip onhis hand tightened even further.

“Hoseokie,” the boy’s voice was rough and mocking as hislips quirked into a smirk, “who’s this pretty boy here. Do you fuck himsometimes? Ah, does he think you’re good in bed?”

Hoseok’s eyebrows furrowed at that, anger lighting up inhis eyes. He was just about to open his mouth and finally give the other male apiece of his mind when he was interrupted again.

“Pretty boy,” Jungkook was still shell-shocked at theconfrontation but now the boy was looking at him, “Let me tell you somethingangel, I’m the one that taught your precious hyung all about fucking…firsthand. How about this, why don’t you leave my little newbie here and come withme. I’ll make you feel so good.” Jungkook’s eyes widened at the implication andhis fists balled, ready to fly but Hoseok’s hold on his wrist stopped him.

“Don’t you dare touch him. I will kill you if you eventhink about him in that way.” Hoseok’s voice was merely a low growl as thetendons in his arms strained.

“Oh and who are you to say that, Hoseokie?” Jungkook wantsto scream at him, shout that only he’s allowed to say ‘Hoseokie,’ that he hasno right to talk to his hyung like that.

Hoseok tugs Jungkook behind him protectively, a burningfury in his eyes, “He’s my boyfriend you fucker!” By now, everyone in thelittle shop had their attention on them.

A gasp was caught in his throat. Boyfriend. Hoseok had said boyfriend.

“Damn, such a pretty little thing he is too. He’d moan evenlouder than you did.” Hoseok let go of Jungkook’s wrist in favor of grabbingthe man by his shirt collar.

“Don’t touch him, I swear I will hunt you down. I don’tcare what you did to me before, but I will not. I will not! Let you hurt him.”

“You’re no fun anymore. Fine, I’ll let you keep your shinynew toy, but you can’t escape from what we had before.”

“We didn’t have anything, you piece of shit. Come onKookie, let’s go.” Before they got out the door, Jungkook flipped the man offsince he didn’t have the chance to beat him up.

Hoseok looked straight ahead as he tugged Jungkook along.He didn’t say anything, just kept walking until his steps stuttered to a halt.He dropped down to a crouch and buried his face in his hands.

“I’m sorry, Jungkookie, I’m so sorry you had to see that.”

Jungkook bent down next to him and put a gentle hand on hisshoulder, “You don’t have to tell me the details hyung, but I said I’d protectyou from anything right? You should’ve let me at him, I can fight!” Hoseoklaughed lightly, a hoarse sound.

“No Jungkook-ah, don’t do that.”

“Hyung?” Hoseok grunted in acknowledgement.

“Don’t freak out okay?”

“There’s nothing to freak out about now.”

“I’m serious.”

“Okay, I promise.”

“Hoseokie hyung, will you be my boyfriend?”

There was silence and Jungkook feared he had made a gravemistake, feared that he had taken Hoseok’s words during the heated exchange tooseriously.

“I’m sorry, pretend I never said that. It’s actually timefor me to go home. I-I’ll see you tomorrow hyung.” Jungkook turned aroundbefore the burning tears fell. He took a shuddering breath and took the firststep towards anywhere but where Hoseok was.

“Don’t go,” A warm hand curled around his wrist again,“Don’t go, I’m sorry I acted weird after that day. I promise it wasn’t youalright? I…had to fix some things before I could be beside you again.”

Jungkook’s breath hitched, a tendril of hope wrapping aroundhis heart, “Hyung…”

“I’ll be your boyfriend, Kook-ah, if you let me. I mademistakes but if you still want me after I tell you, I’ll stay.”

Jungkook let out a harsh breath, the weight lifting fromhis chest, “Yeah, I’d like that.”

“Hoseokie!” A heavy weight landed on top of the older maleas he lounged on the couch.
