→ if i'm being honest, i don't think simon's ever been on a date. sure, he's entertained the idea, wanted to before joining the military, but afterwards, the idea dissolved along with his need for romance. he figured that no one in their right mind would want to date him or even stay longer than a quick fuck, so he let the fantasy rot in the back of his mind. until he met you.

→ regarding what he would want on a date, it would be something simple, something at home like making dinner (even though he can't cook) or watching a movie. simon isn't a man to buy into the stereotypical romance he sees in movies. taking someone out to dinner seems like a waste of time and money, cliché and horribly dull.

→ staying inside, however, tending to you in the intimacy of your apartment, wrapped in your warmth as a movie plays on the tv, is his idea of an ideal night.

→ however, what he would actually do if he found the time when he was back from leave to take you on a date is completely different. simon would step out of his comfort zone for you and plan a date at a high-end restaurant based on the assumption that you like that kind of thing. he's heard the men he works with talking about taking their wives and girlfriends out. they all seem to enjoy the pampering and attention from it, so why wouldn't you?

→ no matter how cheesy he thinks it is, he'll still make the reservation, reassured by the fact that you'll like it because google and every dating article tells him it's the kind of thing women want. and who would he be if he didn't put every fiber of his being into pleasing you? because, god, he would do anything for you.

→ so despite his uncomfortableness about being around so many people without the surgical mask he usually wears in public, he'd take you to the kind of place you only see in movies, clean up nicer than he's used to, and sit through an incredibly expensive dinner because simon wants to treat you right (even though he would gladly take you somewhere fancy again if it means seeing you in that dress).

→ all simon wants is for you to have some of the normalcy everyone else's relationships have, everything yours lacks, and the conventional aspects he's never there to give you. it is his way of showing you how much he cares for you and how far he is willing to go to make you happy. he wants to give you everything, so if that means sitting in a restaurant for a few hours, he'll push every self-reservation aside and give you the most corny romantic night of your life.

→ only to find out later, after you thanked him but asked him why he did all this, you would have been just as happy sitting in the apartment watching a movie.

→ he's stunned at first, saying in a gruff, slightly confused tone. "i thought women liked this stuff."

→ you chuckled and told him you only wanted to spend time with him. you didn't need a grand gesture to know that he cared because it didn't matter what you two did as long as you did it together.

→ his heart would melt with an appreciation he couldn't even begin to explain or comprehend. "should've told me that earlier, love," he muttered, unsure how to express the gratitude gnawing at his chest. on the ride home, he's silent, turning over your words in his mind with fondness and an inward smile.

→ it's then that you both learn something new about each other: your shared love for small and simple gestures and your need for quality time. so, when you arrive at your apartment, you wrap yourselves in blankets, snuggle up next to each other in pajamas, and watch a movie to finish off an already perfect date night.
