just wanted to say your razlo/meryl art is soooo good!! like even the idea of the pairing drives me a little nuts i love them so much lol and then your art of them is just *mwah* chef's kiss love the dynamic love their interactions love everything all around!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yessssss these two are so fun to come up with stuff for-
Since Razlo comes off as the type who loves getting a rise out of people and since Meryl is so easy to piss off a good chunk of his time is spent getting under her skin- but make no mistake that Meryl will take any and every opportunity to get one over on him- mutual goal of annoying the hell out of each other, but if there's a third person they both dislike they get real catty real quick pfffffft
But also the dynamic of two people who care a great deal for each other but neither will ever admit it hhhhh

I was recently on a flight, and shared a row with a crunchyroll employee. we had a really interesting conversation about the platform and then afterwards I googled some of the stuff we talked about and realized some of it is definitely not stuff that's been publicly announced yet... so crunchyroll, here's the deal: you finally move the tgcf donghua and english dub onto your platform from funimation and I keep your secrets.... 😝

The RWBY Thing
So, here's my two cents, as a longtime RWBY fan.
First off, fuck Rooster Teeth. They're a shitty, exploitative company, and they suck.
Secondly, obviously real peoples' lives are more important than a cartoon show.
But I've seen a sort of vindictiveness around this that's kind of weird? And I'm noticing that the wishes of the people who were mistreated are kind of being talked over.
I think sometimes it helps to take a breath and look back on what, exactly, the point of any particular boycott is. In this case, there are no unionizing workers, because it's nearly impossible to unionize in Texas, and most of these workers were leaving for better work anyway. Moreover, if we look at the parting statements of the workers who left, and the statements from the ones who are still there, not one of them have called for a boycott or piracy (as far as I'm aware. If I'm wrong, please let me know in the replies!)
In fact, several of them have wished CRWBY the best, and expressed support for the show to continue. And I think that if we're expressing rage at a company for how it treats its employees, it's pretty important to center what those employees want.
I haven't had a FIRST account since October 2020. I'm all for people cancelling their FIRST accounts, I think that does send a message. But if we want to support the animators without supporting Rooster Teeth, well, someone outright asked an animator how to do that on Twitter, and they replied.
Tumblr media
So, that's pretty clear-cut, coming from one of the animators. I get that people are angry - hell, I'm still pissed at Rooster Teeth. But this isn't a Hogwarts Legacy situation. As someone on one of the many Discord servers I'm in put it,
if you buy HP stuff you're giving JKR money to lobby for anti-trans causes. If you pay for RT First you're giving RT execs money to buy a beer they don't really deserve
This is a labour issue, and so, as in any labour issue, the first step is to defer to the workers. And as far as I can see, none of the workers have asked people to boycott or pirate the show, but rather have asked us to watch it on Crunchyroll. I'm not buying any merch for this show, or anything from the Rooster Teeth store ever again, and I'm certainly not paying for RT FIRST. But that's for my own personal sense of integrity, and it's not a collective action or effective protest.
If you want to hurt Rooster Teeth (which on some level I do too, for treating the people who make my favourite show like garbage), then pirate or abstain from the show. I'm not going to judge anyone for doing so.
But if you want to help the animators who work on the show, then actually listen to them: watch the show on Crunchyroll (especially if you already have a CR Premium account, like I do), donate to the Ko-Fis and Patreons of the people who've left, and if you live in Texas, push for pro-union policies and politicians so that things like this don't happen again.

Shugo Chara! Sequel Manga
I was supposed to make this post shortly after the news broke on 10/3 about the manga getting a sequel, but I got lazy. So it's late. And then it ended up being super long...
I saw the sentence on the cover of Nakayoshi earlier that weekend, and it didn't specify if it would be a sequel manga. It just said something about the issue containing information about a new project. So it could have gone either way, with that sentence being so vague. It was either a sequel manga or anime reboot. I was personally hoping for the latter. When there was a leak about it being a sequel manga I initially dismissed it. There was no concrete source for it, and with my prior knowledge of how this fandom lies I wasn't going to blindly believe something. I remember first joining this fandom way back in 2008, on a SC! forum called Guardian's Wish. Around 2009 when Crunchyroll first started streaming numerous ongoing anime at the time - the second season of SC! being one of them - the girls on Guardian's Wish would talk about how everyone on the Crunchyroll forums were leaking and lying about all kinds of things for SC!, claiming that their leaks were telling them what was to come in the manga, and it was ridiculous stupid shit like Ikuto having a dog Guardian Character. Lol, no. It was very hard to get Japanese raws back then, so leaks were all we had. Most of them were obvious lies. So I've grown to never believe anything the western fandom says. If I don't have a Japanese source for it, it's bullshit. This fandom still doesn't have its manga lore straight after all…
It was around Sunday night on the 1st (which was actually already the 2nd in Japan) that a Japanese Twitter account finally posted more concrete proof - an actual picture of the article in the issue. I had my legit source. It was a sequel manga… and honestly it wasn't what I wanted. I'm probably the only person in this fandom that didn't want a sequel manga. I wanted a faithful anime reboot. I was scared of a sequel manga. I didn't want them to give into pressure from fans and Nakayoshi to make a sequel manga and then have the story be worse than the original manga or have it ruin the ending. That would have disappointed me so much. The ending was perfect, I didn't want them to ruin it.
I feel like this fandom has constantly missed the point of this manga with the constant ship wars and cries for a sequel. The story of the Guardian Characters ended in Chapter 48 (Volume 11). Why do you think Volume 12 (the Encore chapters) was such a ship fest? That was them wrapping everything else up. Because they finished the main story with Volume 11. They pretty much say this here in a very old blog post about Chapter 48. They purposely made the manga very fast paced, and they admitted that some things had to be cut because of that, in particular chapters dealing with the other Guardians. Which is why Encore focused on the other characters initially.
I think we, the readers, were never supposed to know what Amu's would-be self is, because that would ruin and contradict the message the Guardian Characters were trying to send - that you can be whatever you want to be. It's a very positive message to send, especially to children. Why would they cancel out this message by immediately having Amu decide what she wants to be? This was always supposed to be left open ended. An answer to a fan question about Hikaru's egg hatching back in a 2010 Q&A session kind of supports my theory that Peach-Pit meant to leave things a little open ended. They said they had initially planned to have Hikaru's Guardian Character be revealed in the final chapter, but decided to leave it up to everyone's imagination instead. So that's why I didn't want a sequel. Clearly the ending of the manga was meant to be open ended, and it wrapped almost everything up perfectly.
And as for the shipping, because of course this is going to be brought up within this stupid fandom… I just laugh to myself whenever people STILL naively wonder who Amu ends up with. Are you kidding me?
First, did you not read my previous paragraph? Romance was not the main point of this manga. The Guardian Characters were. Plot first, romance second.
Second, are you people blind or just still willfully ignorant and unable to accept reality? Did you not actually read the manga? Did you not read the last chapter? Did you not listen to the drama CD of the final chapter? Most people haven't and it's shocking, even among the Japanese fandom, the amount of people who don't know about the drama CD adaption of the final chapter. The panel where they start holding hands at the wedding and Amu is having an internal monologue, reading it you think she's the one that says "one day", but in the drama CD both Amu and Ikuto say that line together. I need no other proof that this is canon. The kanji in their last names were also a dead giveaway, and as for the artbook notes for the final chapter title page…
Tumblr media
万里: グランドフィナーレですね. 白い服の2人とブーケ…, というのは最初から決まってました. 12巻でバージョンちがいを描きましたよ.
Banri: It's the grand finale. Two people wearing white clothes and a bouquet… that was decided from the beginning. The Volume 12 version is drawn differently.
This was planned from the beginning. Obvious to anyone with functioning braincells, of course. And people who actually read the manga and not that awful, filler infested unfaithful train wreck of an anime. That's a different rant. It's no secret that I despise the anime and how it ruined everyone's character development, especially Amu's.
I did always find it rather odd that there were literally no title pages with just Amu and Tadase in them. You can see the artbook scans for the first artbook here and second artbook here. There was either a third person there or it was a group shot with the other Guardians. There were definitely some chapters early on where a Tadamu title page would have made perfect sense given the content of the chapter. But they just… never did it. It was always strange to me since every other shoujo manga in existence loves to troll readers with the love triangle (and Peach-Pit definitely did plenty of that) and usually that includes being on the title pages an equal amount… but not here. Sometimes I wonder if because this was their first shoujo manga, they didn't know what they were doing. Or maybe they were doing it on purpose.
I can't believe I've never talked about this one before, because it was something I noticed back in 2021 when the new editions were first revealed. A juicy little line I saw on the back of the new Volume 2...
元気と勇気をもらえるミラクルファンタジー, あむとイクトの恋も仲間たちとの友情も深まる第2巻.
A miracle fantasy that gives you energy and courage, Amu and Ikuto's love, as well as the friendship between friends, deepens in Volume 2.
I remember thinking... did I read that right?! Is my shitty Japanese working right?! Did they just admit this so blatantly?! It wasn't the word "suki" they used here either, they used "koi". Even with all the new illustrations, especially this one, they're not exactly being subtle about it anymore. I think that covers the shipping now...
Also, the "miracle fantasy" bit is the tagline the manga had when it was serialized in Nakayoshi.
I also really, really did not want a time skip sequel manga, and I am forever reminded of how badly time skips can go whenever I think of the Digimon Adventure 02 ending. They wrote themselves into such a fucking corner with that epilogue the current movies dealing with them as adults are so messy as a result. Not everything can have a nice clean time skip ending like FMA… and of course the shipping elements in SC! would have just made things even messier, further making people forget once again that the point wasn't the romance, it was the Guardian Characters...
So after this announcement I was left wondering, what kind of sequel manga is this going to be? Is it going to be like Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc and take place immediately after the original manga, or is it going to be like Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch Aqua, taking place in the future and being about the main character's children instead? I wanted the former, I was terrified of the latter.
Thank God Peach-Pit immediately came out and said exactly what kind of sequel this is going to be in a post on their pixiv Fanbox - it is going to take place while Amu and the others are in middle school. Hopefully that eases some fears like it did for me. Normally their pixiv Fanbox rules state not to share the information found on their pixiv Fanbox posts, however this particular article is listed as "All Users", and can be viewed by anyone who doesn't have an account or isn't paying for a plan. I think it's safe to share then. Everything else is locked behind a paywall, so I won't talk about those posts.
I honestly don't even know how they plan on continuing the story. I'm still convinced this is just Nakayoshi being greedy and forcing Peach-Pit to do a sequel because Nakayoshi's current cash cow - Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc - is ending soon. And with the success of SC!'s 15th Anniversary celebrations, with constant new merchandise and new illustrations, Nakayoshi knows they can milk this next. This is also why I think an anime reboot is still possible, and that they're just saving that news for much later. You don't spend almost 3 years now making new illustrations and merchandise just to give everyone a sequel manga which doesn't cost nearly as much as an anime adaption to make. Yes it still costs money, because art supplies are needed and publishing companies need to print it. However I imagine an anime reboot costs a lot more, especially if they want to get the original voice actors back, all of which are even more popular than they were back then. And they better get them back, because it would break my heart if they were all replaced. Don't even bother to reboot it then if it's not possible to get the original voice actors back. It just wouldn't be the same. And I only really care about the Guardians and Easter, all the minor characters and parents don't need their original voice actors back. Unless someone retired or passed away, then obviously a replacement has to be selected, and in those cases it's understandable. So again, I'm still hoping for a reboot, and I'm convinced they're just hoarding money in the meantime while they wait for a perfect chance to announce it. There's also the matter with Utau's songs... they definitely need to get the rights for those.
Another thing that makes me annoyed with Nakayoshi and the current state of shoujo manga as a whole is that trash like this gets an anime adaption before SC! gets a reboot?! Holy hell this manga is just so bad. I've been so disappointed with the crap running in Nakayoshi nowadays. Obviously I'm not talking about Cardcaptor Sakura, that's good, but everything else in Nakayoshi (like Vampire Dormitory) is just so bad. Shinkon dakedo Kataomoi does actually look sweet and wholesome, it's a shame there are no translations.
And then there's Chou ka Han ka: Gokudou-sama Afurete Afurete Nakasetai, a manga that used to run in Nakayoshi but it got so fucking raunchy they transferred it to a different more adult magazine. The shit I saw when I skimmed those pages make the shit Peach-Pit got away with in SC! look tame. SC! and Arisa really were one of the last good shoujo manga to run in this magazine… and I still need to get around to reading Sugar Sugar Rune and Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch. I've heard good things about them both.
The stuff running in Nakayoshi today is so bad that they have to bring back old classic stuff, first giving CCS a sequel, then Mermaid Melody, now SC!. In one way, it's a compliment to that classic stuff, finally giving them the recognition they deserve because they really were good. And then on the other hand it's insulting to the new stuff running in the magazine because Nakayoshi is basically saying none of them are good enough to compete with what came before them. I find that kind of sad. Instead of cultivating that new talent they just go back to manga that ended a while ago. And I'm afraid that doing that would just end up ruining everything that was good about those manga. They don't need sequels, what they need instead are faithful anime adaptions that respect the source material this time. That Tokyo Mew Mew reboot was so awful though, and it wasn't faithful to the manga at all.
I'm enjoying Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc though, so thankfully that sequel ended up being fine. At least Clamp's art actually improved a lot from the original manga, which brings me back to what I've been ranting about lately regarding Peach-Pit's art style not looking the same as it did back in 2010 when SC! first ended. I really hope they use this time before the sequel starts to work on their shoujo art style again, and making sure the story is just as good as the original. I really want this to do good because I love this manga, I'm just hesitant to trust Nakayoshi's intentions here. I'm convinced they're just doing this because CCS is ending and they needed something new to milk money from.
Holy shit did this end up being really long. Damn, I had way too much to say about this, hopefully it isn't too much of a confusing mess.

Has anyone else had an issue where after VRV switched to crunchyroll, you havent been able to cancel?
I have now reached out to Crunchyroll/VRV twice and this time after going back and forth 10 times over the course of 2 weeks for information about my account I get this.
Tumblr media

Like I KNOW. But I ALREADY HAVE IT. I dont need a second account when my partner is already paying for our crunchyroll account!
Now they just wont let me cancel and are telling me "youre all good 🙂"

Have you seen the V9 trailer yet? It's so promising, gonna be an amazing volume
Yes, it looks like it’s going to be the best volume yet!
It’s just too bad that it’s exclusively airing on crunchyroll. I’m not getting yet another subscription for 10 episodes of a show, no matter how good, and the only reason I still had my RT First membership was for RWBY so I guess I’m canceling that. I don’t want to pirate it because it’s RT, but unless someone with a CR account wants to host a watch party then I’m not sure how I’m going to watch it.

My family has had this deal for years where each one of us pays for a different subscription service. I paid for hulu, my sister paid for disney, my mom paid for Netflix, my brother paid for crunchyroll, partner pays for Amazon prime. Well, we're down to just Netflix and Amazon and Netflix is next to go.
I originally signed up for hulu at $8 a month. It's now $18/mo.
The prices raised on every other streaming service as well as removed the ability to share accounts.
My friends have been canceling their subscriptions, too.
If we want the prices to go back down, we absolutely have to boycott them until they do so
Continuing to pay for them only reinforces the idea raising prices is good and okay

Growing up in an abusive home and still being on the road to recovery from a co-dependent relationship leads to some...frustrating fears.
I just cancelled my Netflix account.
I've had zero reason to keep it going. When the TV goes on, I'm watching Crunchyroll, Star Trek (...I mean Paramount+), or Youtube. Not even YT premium. I have no need to be spending money on Hulu, Disney+, or Netflix. If I had been the only adult in the apartment, I'd have cancelled the services I never watch in a heartbeat.
But I have a girlfriend.
And saying 'no' to things she wants to get is HARD and cancelling something because she might want to watch a show on it is SCARY because I'm TERRIFIED she's going to get angry at me and leave and I know I can recover because I've done it before, but it would hurt so...very much.
But she said I could. I talked about it (after spending WEEKS working up the courage to speak up) and she just listened to my reasoning, said, "Yeah, okay," and went back to playing her game.
The last time I lost my temper with her, probably the first time in over a year, I (apparently) misunderstood her and thought she was getting ready to leave and I wound up curled up in a ball crying my damn eyes out because I thought I'd ruined another relationship and she was going to leave and she couldn't understand why I was falling apart because I was crying so hard I couldn't even talk. I got angry and she apologized for not being clear.
I'm old, I'm ugly, I'm a mess, but she's still with me. And I'm so afraid of losing her I nearly crash and burn just trying to cancel the goddamn Netflix account.

17/1/24 Fact or Fiction
Statement #1: John Wick: Chapter 4 was the best movie of 2023. ABSTAIN - As I haven't seen it (or, you know, John Wicks 2 or 3) I can't say whether it is or is not the best film of 2023, though I can say it would have to be pretty bloody spectacular to dislodge Oppenheimer, Godzilla Minus One or Suzume (due to the UK release being in 2023, it counts) from my personal top three. Thought there is one way to say John Wick 4 was the best film of 2023, and that is if I say that The Stray's was my second-favourite film of 2023, with literally every other film (including ones I haven't seen) ahead of it. You get the feeling that I thought The Strays was an irredeemable pile of shite, don't you...?
Statement #2: You want to see more “experimental” horror movies after the success of movies like Skinamarink and The Outwaters in 2023. FACT - Although hopefully not "experimental" as a euphemism for "half-baked crap carried by its visual style", because I don't want another Cosmopolis and/or Crimes of the Future experience if I can potentially avoid it
Statement #3: Moving forward, the MCU needs to pivot away from the Kang character and the “multiverse” in general. FICTION - The MCU definitely needs to pivot, as 2023 was the year where people caught on to how it is the very definition of "content" in the reaction channel definition of the word, but what it needs to pivot towards is something that shakes the formula up. Oh who are we kidding, this is Disney we're talking about, so they'll just do an MCU/Star Wars crossover
Statement #4: The Last of Us was the best TV show of 2023. FICTION - It was good, in fact it was very good, but Inside No 9 takes the crown for me, because which other show can have people raging about an episode being bumped for a gameshow and then getting wrongfooted as the gameshow was the episode? And that's barely scratching the surface...
Statement #5: The only thing left worth watching on network TV is live sports. FICTION - Partly because Inside No 9 is on network TV in the UK, and partly because live sports is either the dregs that Sky or BT don't want such as darts, snooker, darts, crown green bowls and darts, Six Nations matches other than England home games (which are on Sky, along with the one song their supporters sing when England are at least 10 points up with five minutes to go...) and because the live football is almost inevitably Manchester United's match in every single round of the FA Cup until they're eliminated
Statement #6: The producers of the Scream franchise need to do whatever it takes to get Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega back. Barrera already met with Spyglass Media a week or two ago, and that meeting lasted all of 45 second between her walking in and walking out again. In other words, Spyglass need to accept that they fucked it and put the franchise on the backburner
Statement #7: You find it annoying that streaming TV series can have any random number of episodes per season and new seasons can sometimes take years to come out without any explanation. FICTION - In terms of streaming platforms, there are far more annoying things they can do with shows, such as cancel them after a season or two, or what Crunchyroll did a couple of years ago and put 95% of their shows behind a paywall with zero warning, while All4 found a new way to be annoying in 2023 by heavily advertising a couple of shows but neglecting to mention that they'd be leaving the platform within a month. So if anyone would like to let me borrow their Apple TV account so I can finish watching The Girl from Plainview...?
Statement #8: We won’t see any theatrical events in 2024 like we did in 2023 with Barbenheimer or the Taylor Swift concert film. FICTION - Guaranteed somebody will try to manufacture one like that at some point in 2024. Actually, scratch that, attempts at forcing another Barbenheimer have already happened as we saw desperate attempts to make Saw Patrol a thing with Paramount even tweeting about it, though we were robbed of ExorSwift when Universal lost their nerve. That being said, if a cinema did happen to show Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One at the same time, there is still time to make Godzenheimer a thing. Come on, people!!!

Alsooo, as an unrelated fun fact... since I've been bitching nonstop today... maybe this entire week actually...
I canceled my Netflix subscription since I don't use it enough to justify $15 a month in general... (like if it was an added fee to add people, FINE. I get adding a fine if people are password sharing. If its reasonable people will still share the account but share the price, right? No problem. Hell, id pay and extra $5 a month if i could share my password with relatives in a different state. Like id pay $20 a month to look at my relatives and say "you dont have to pay for netflix, heres my sccount, we'll share) but having to log in to home wifi with 3 devices... while I could PROBABLY pass sounds annoying and frustrating. My wi-fi is through my housing. Idk what that is even going to do. Multiple apartments and buildings use the wifi... and while I like to THINK Netflix would be fine with multiple accounts on the same Wi-Fi, what if they decide that's a no go too? Or you can't log into your "home" wifi because it thinks your someone else on the wifi? What happens? I know how to pirate. Don't test me. I'm not playing this game, I'm working around it. Like, the point of paying dor a streaming service rather than orienting it is to share the passwords
And I don't use netflix enough to really justify it, particularly when they have ads on mobile (hilarious in the stupidest way btw. Like. I use my student spotify sub for hulu. But I'd pay $7 a month for it with ads all things considered but its cheap with ads for a reason. I actively like Hulu despite its flaws for now. No ads is another deal and understandable imo. Not ideal but if i was derpserate, hell yeah)... so.... I canceled my subscription and because a friend gives me his crunchyroll login and he wanted a dropout.tv account (dropout being way cheaper than crunchy or netflix. Like i shit you not) I just... was like "dude I canceled Netflix yesterday. I know you want an account but let me make one, pay for it, and I'll give you my password, because they allow sharing"
So despite me barely watching dropout, I now have an account. It's a fun site! I like their content! I've just... never been super determined to watch a lot... but their pricing is more than reasonable and if you're gonna give me access to 2-3 streaming services (cause it ain't just crunchyroll) I'll pay for a $6 a month service for us both to watch. Dropout is fun and I've watched it with other people and it helps with my depression. It's cheap and fun and like... while I'm sure it's not the best streaming service it provides a type of entertainment that is cathartic for me. Like, it's not a mainstream streaming service but it does help me and I know it. And I have a friend overjoyed to have it, and we cabln SHARE the account? HELL yeah. So if I have a GUNG-HO friend that really wants it? And it helps me? Of course I'll pay the monthly fee and share my account. It's worth more to pay $6 for a shared account than $15 for a single account. And yeah, you can settle for lower streaming quality from netflix for about $10 a month... but im still probably paying for the cheaper services. And the ones I can actively share. Because if I'm not watching it and someone else is it pays for itself, ya'know?
Like dude has been blowing through dimension 20 all week. Was about to make his account and I went "nah, you give me crunchyroll and I just canceled my most expensive streaming service, I gotchu" like, even amazon prime for students is cheaper. Netflix if you don't wanna join blockbuster, get it together cause you about to follow suit buddy
