Rereading Grass Dancer and I rly have to say that the first chapter is such a great start to the book. It sets the tone for the entire book afterwards, the way everyone’s lives intersect with each other, the feeling of something missing, the way magic is interwoven into the story, so on.

ᯓᡣ𐭩 !!For those who don't play, Speed is a game where you have 20 cards to discard, and two discard piles. You have to place down each card (one by one) as fast as you can, in order, and whoever runs out of cards first wins. If there are no more cards to place, you grab from the piles on the sides to continue the game. All while keeping 5 cards in your hand at a time. While you don't need to know this in order to read the story- it will be helpful to know bc I'm not that good at explaining card games.!!

Husk kept on losing, and it was starting to piss him off. Today's redemption exercise was to practice to eliminate the need for gambling; ironically, Husk was chosen to lead the rounds of games. The current game was Speed, with Hellish versions of playing cards.

And he was losing. So. Bad.

Everyone was sitting in the main area, with the usual furniture switched out for tables and chairs. Husk growled, but kept his composure.

"Where's the serenity at, dear Husker? Getting 'chaff' now are we? I guess the cat does lose it's skill, after getting too curious of course." Alastor said, antagonizing him further. Husk banged his fist on the table, making the sinner in front of him jump a bit.

"Fuck!" He grumbles out. The first 5 were won easily, but for some reason these past 30 something games have been no luck.

At first, the goal of the exercise was to play a few games, and quit. You know, to discourage bad behavior but still have fun. But right now, even without a genuine bet, he was setting a bad example. He knows. The sinner in front of him was playing swiftly and skillfully. His wing twitched and he grimaced as his mind stuttered.

But he just had to win. He has to keep going.

Charlie was getting concerned, but he waved her off. Everyone else was finished with their rounds of games, it was time for a new activity. But Husk wasn't gonna allow himself to lose like this.

Not to a damned practice game.

Then you walked next to him. One by one, he rapidly placed down cards in order. His partner did as well, speed was the game afterall. His ear twitched as your heels softly clacked against the floor.

"Hey Husk, baby. You doin' any good?" You said, your voice dripping like honey over his ears. But then he remembered the game. You were worried, Vaggie told you he's been going on like this for hours non-stop. It's almost nighttime.

"Yea, don' worry. Imma win this game in just a minute." He responded, gruffly as he missed the chance to place his ace. He put down a 4 over the five in the second discard pile then. 2 cards left in his deck, but none that followed the order of the discard pile. Fuck.

His partner had 1 card left, probably a king considering the cards that were already placed down.

You kissed his fluffy forehead, relishing in the near silent purr he let out.

"Alright sweetheart, finish up the game so everyone can go to sleep." You fidgeted with his ears in your hands for a bit, before letting go and sitting at the bar.

Watching from afar, you saw that he won. But he wanted to play again. This time though, you didn't allow it. Vaggie saw that you had it handled, so she went up to the elevator. Probably to her room with Charlie, you guessed.

You stood up, walking towards him again with a glass of whiskey, swished with chocolate hints. You placed it in front of him while he was shuffling the cards, not before taking a sip.

The affectionate way it is then.

"Hey, you." You said, slowly rubbing up and down on his fur. You could feel it bristle in shivers before relaxing. Your chin rested on top of his head, lifting a bit to see what he was doing.

"Hey? You just talked to me a few minutes ago." He began to set the cards up, so you pluck them up and stacked them away into a withered box. His wing flapped in annoyance.

"I know," you chuckled. "I just knew you wouldn't last long without a drink. Nothin' too sweet of course." You finished, pushing the drink towards him.

While you couldn't eliminate his addictions, you could switch them for others in small amounts, enough to distract him to bed. You can't fix him, he can only help himself when he chooses to. You both know that.

"You know me too well, Sugarpie." Husk smiled, before talking a gulp of the glass you gave him. Half of it was gone. "No cherry?"

You laughed a bit, placing the box in your pocket to put away later. No one was in the room, no one you could see anyway.

"Naw." You rested your chin back down on his head, wrapping your arms around him neck a bit. "You would just swing it away. No appreciation for its flavor-" You scoffed amusedly at the thought.

He was now distracted away from the cards and now on you, good. You could hear Alastor snicker before walking away.

"Ready to go to bed?"

In the dark room, you slept. Husk didn't.

He was wide awake, in a way that still made him feel tired, but not sleep. On his back, he looked up at the ceiling in mindless thought.

Husk didn't mind though, as long as it didn't affect your sleep. He looked at you. Your breaths were soft, and slow. His eyes dilated, though one could never really prove it.

Grabbing onto your waist, he cuddles into your side just a bit more, and relaxes with a deep sigh.

You, in your half asleep state, reach for him. In which you succeed, running your fingers through the tuffs of his ears in an unknown rhythm. Husk purred freely now, he loved it when this happened.

How lucky was he, of all people in this shitty hell, to still have his wife in the afterlife? Sure, you may not have done great things, but he was afraid that the two of you would forever be separated by heaven.

How lucky was he, in all of his shitty problems and mental shit, to be able to still have you around? To have you want him around?

That thought had brought a soft smile to his face. In all of his gambles, this was the best one he's ever made.

I think imma call this place the "debriefing space" bc I always wanna ramble, but I'm never sure where. Also, so people won't have to read this before the oneshot/fic. Nothing here will be specific, maybe things I'm thinking while writing, or things that I sorta wanna discuss.

Rather than being a lucky charm, I was thinking reader to be more of a saving grace for Husk. Which he already finds lucky enough. While you are motivation to win, it doesn't always secure his place for it.

I know this trope is kinds overused, but you and Husk were married during life (yippee!!). You guys are just two old people who want to spend time with each other lmao. I sorta headcannon that when he starts to get too into his addiction, you kind of save him (BUT NOT FROM ALASTOR LMAO/hj) and that was one of the reasons why he married you. Not only to keep himself in control, but to see you guys thrive together <33

{Can we just talk about how when Angel Dust nonconsensually touches Husk ppl call it "cute" and "aww", but when Valentino nonconsensually touches Angel it's now bad? likkke. we love the show but we gotta get some new writers for season 2 and fans who don't mischaracterize everything they see.

I'm now only really starting to think about this- and the double standard is starting to be more noticeable to me. Like when Sir Pentious was saying "no" but those demons still dragged him into the sex room. But that scene was used for entertainment rather than "Hey this is a serious moment" like Valentino was.

I'm all for HuskerDust, but you gotta realize when a character does something bad and does nothing to redeem from it, no matter if they're a part of the main cast or not. (isn't that what the show is supposed to be about- redemption? y'all do understand how destructive this behavior is and how it can easily make HuskerDust toxic right?). }

Luke’s death

yeah, hi, it’s me, AGAIN, because this story has given me brain rot and i can’t stop thinking about it— congratulations, i hope you’re happy bc i’m here to stay dammit (i should really go to sleep)

So I started thinking about how HOTD S1 E10 would go down with the twins once it’s years later and the Greens have usurped Rhaenyra’s throne. (granted, I don’t know the time jump that’s going to happen so for this I’ve decided it’s just 8 years later, so the boys are 16).  And how the event surrounding Luke's death would come.

Granted, in this scenario, Aemond did lose his eye, maybe the twins tried to stop it, maybe it wasn't even at Driftmark, but it still happens. I like to think that in the case time travel, the thing about time is that it wants to happen. You can cause ripples but you can't cause waves, not unless it's something big. So until one of them truly does something big, well, events will just continue to happen as they should.

It goes off normally, Rhaenyra loses Visenya, they cremate her, Ser Erryk arrives with the crown, Daemon crowns Rhaenyra and everyone takes a knee. (except Rhaenys of course). Now, for the scene where Jace says that he and Luke should bear those messages to the great lords and Rhaenyra agrees, Jon and Rhaegar share a look. They argue slightly that maybe they should do it since Jace is the heir and Luke is next in line. 

Finally, they decide to go in pairs: one of the Queen’s boys and one of Daemon’s boys. I personally vie for Rhaegar wanting to go with Luke to Storm’s End and Jon and he argue about it in private. Jon reminds him of what happens in Storms End, Rhaegar is very much aware of the histories but says that:

1. Jon should be the one to go to Winterfell. He knows it better, he knows how Stark's work, how the North works, and overall just to see it. Besides, who knows if he’ll ever get the chance again with this upcoming civil war? 

2. Aemond and Rhaegar got along as children, better than Aemond and Jon (or at least I’m going with that from the last chapter I read). (I also don’t know if they had a falling out when Aemond lost his eye or when J & R sided more with the Blacks). But regardless, Rhaegar is banking on that familiarity that might make Aemond calmer to deal with.

That doesn’t stop Jon from absolutely fighting it though because well, it’s the Baratheon seat, and that makes him nervous for Rhaegar. So, there is a version of this where it’s Jon that goes with Luke instead.

Still, let’s focus on Rhaegar for now. When he and Luke get to Storm’s End, they find Aemond there and in the middle of making a betrothal with one of the Baratheon girls. Maybe Rhaegar thinks he’d be open to a betrothal with one of them if it makes it easier for the Lord to choose Rhaenyra’s side, especially the idea that any children they have could claim one of Dragonstone’s dragons, as they have more than the Greens do. (heavily ironic that other!Rhaegar dies because of a Baratheon and unknowingly, this Rhaegar might consider marrying one. Talk about irony my friends.).

It still doesn’t end well with Luke and R being kicked out but not before Aemond demands Luke’s eye. When Rhaegar tries to dissuade him, Aemond is angry at him, still mad over how the twins went to the Blacks, calling him a traitor and maybe insulting his twin simply because of his hair color maybe? The boys get back to their dragons and sure enough, Vhagar is off and the chase happens. During the flight scene, Qelebrys and Vhagar do heavily injure each other to the point that the dragons will need weeks of rest to heal before getting back out there. As for Luke there’s two ways this could go:

Scenario A: 

Daemon and Rhaenyra receive word from Storm’s End about what happened but don’t accept that their sons are gone. I mean Qelebrys is almost as big as Vhagar, surely they got away. They spend days searching until eventually, Qelebrys is spotted either at Sharp Point, Tarth, or Driftmark. She’s there and wounded and so is an exhausted, dehydrated, and traumatized Rhaegar. He’s clutching a torn piece of fabric that Rhaenyra recognizes at Luke’s and with no sight of him or Arrax, it’s easy to draw up the conclusion once Rhaegar starts bawling his eyes at his stepmother who he loves so much. He numbly recalls the fight, how they and the dragons were both on edge, and right when they thought they were free, Vhagar swallowed him. He feels terribly guilty, he thought he could talk Aemond down, he thought with two dragons they could’ve gotten away. He’s so sorry to Rhaenyra that he couldn’t protect her son, one of his close friends and family. I like to think that after that, Rhaenyra doesn’t blame Rhaegar, I mean she loves him and she knows that Aemond’s fury was aimed at Luke. That fury paired with that dragon, there was nothing Rhaegar could’ve done. She hugs him and kisses his head, swearing vengeance on Aemond. 

There is definitely a deep dark part of Daemon that thinks that Rhaenyra would’ve rather Rhaegar die than Lucerys, he doesn’t bring that up of course, but it could influence their relationship in the upcoming future. Both their sons left and only one came back, surely you would’ve had a preference, but then Daemon also feels like a hypocrite, had it been Luke who came back traumatized over Rhaegar’s demise, would he treat him with as much love as Rhaenyra did his son? He doesn’t have the strength to answer that, he doesn’t want to think it, and it still haunts him. Oh! Bonus material for Harrenhal haunting visions. In the end, Daemon wouldn’t chose either child, he came to love Luke, he loves Rhaenyra, overall it’s loss and terrible and could’ve been avoided which is what makes everything so hard.

Scenario B:

In another version, Luke lives other than one of his legs and a few fingers being bitten off when Arrax is killed. His body is found by Rhaegar fast and they fly to Dragonstone, only to crashland on Driftmark maybe. People see Qelebrys, still nursing her wounds but otherwise protecting the boys from strangers. Word gets to Dragonstone and Rhaenyra and Daemon are there immediately for their boys. I don’t know how it works, but it’d be fun that when a dragon bites someone’s head off or other body parts, it’s burning hot, so when Luke’s leg and fingers were taken off they were also somewhat cauterized which means he doesn’t bleed out as much so that’s how he survive longer until their parents find them. Same vengeance is declared but they’re clearly worried about their children, Aemond had no trouble and no restraint in attacking them on a peaceful envoy mission.

But overall, despite the pain and loss that Luke is feeling, he lost body parts and his dragon, it is mournful and a declaration of war. I also think that Rhaegar is relieved, I mean, the whole reason he was steadfast in going with Luke was to ensure that he lived and he did. So, yeah, not great circumstances but he’s alive, that changes things.

The other version where Jon would’ve been the one to go could mirror Aemond’s rage you could think. It’d be very interesting if Aemond did in fact manage to kill Luke and Arrax (again, on accident if we’re going via show, which I’m fine with because it brings more nuance to the killing. That fear when you remember no one can control the dragons and Aemond had to own it or else have the realm believing he’s lost control to the biggest dragon in the world.) So, yeah Luke and Arrax die but immediately after, Jon is angry. He is blazing with fury and so is his dragon, they don’t give Aemond and Vhagar mercy. Vhagar may be the largest but she’s also the oldest. She’s slower than Jon’s dragon. It makes killing her and Jon driving a sword through Aemond’s eye easier. (YES I’m having Jon do the exact Daemon thing in the end, mirroring both father and son, only the son does it earlier.) I don’t know what Jon might be thinking, other than wrath, but I do think that Jon would’ve preferred Luke to live to be the thing that changes events but he’s dead now so instead, he’ll kill his murderer. Jon does suffer some burns on his arms, maybe he gets the iconic scarring on his face from the books/show, but otherwise, he and his dragon manage to get back to either Driftmark or Dragonstone, exhausted, covered in red and black blood, numb, tired, and just staring off into the sea until one of his parents find him. When both of them arrive and want to know what happened, it sends things into more chaos. 

The Green’s lost their prince who was a great swordsman and their biggest dragon. 

Rhaenyra lost her son but he was also avenged almost immediately. 

Jon has to live with the title of kinslayer, despite the fact that he was killing another kinslayer. It seems like he’ll never be rid of dishonorable titles, he might as well be a bastard again.

A version where Luke lives would be similar to the same scenario that Rhaegar has.

A version where Luke dies and Jon doesn’t kill Aemond would also go down as the same scenario only I picture more anger than depression coming from him, he might be more impulsive. He might follow Rhaenys and Meleys out to Rook’s Rest and not tell anyone because he knows that Aemond will be there, he can take him out while Meleys can easily deal with Sunfyre. And he’ll continue to be more impulsive until maybe Rhaenyra talks with him.

This is all I got so far.

Goodness. Actual Dance era is so far away I've not thought about it tooooo deeply.

If the boys are unable to avert the Dance like they intend to, my own imagined circumstances for the start is actually one where both are at King's Landing when Viserys dies, and they're seized as extremely valuable hostages because a) leverage against Daemon which means leverage against Rhaenyra and b) it keeps their very powerful dragons out of the fight. And perhaps c) they're very popular, so having either declare support for the Greens, even coerced, would sway public opinion. So there would be some escape/rescue arc.

In your scenario, the boys would probably need to be closer to 18 for Jace and Luke to be reasonable emissaries. (That would put them at 15 and 14 respectively.) Good pickup on Aemond favoring Rhaegar; we'll see more on that later. Splitting is a tough sell for them, given the bracelet vow of facing threats together. I could see them arguing, especially with good ties they would have already built with the North, to have safety in numbers and move as a pack from lord to lord.

But if they want to live on the edge/aren't convincing enough about the "strength in numbers strat," I think Jon sends Rhaegar to Winterfell because it's safe and he doesn't trust Rhaegar's safety to Borros Baratheon and doesn't give a damn about who Aemond likes better because he's not negotiating with Aemond. Also because if you want diplomacy at Storm's End to fail, you can't send Rhaegar. He'd run diplomatic circles around Aemond and have Borros convinced somehow that a marriage between one of his daughters and him, the second son of the wrong wife of Daemon's, is superior than one to Aegon's brother, Aemond. (Who is at least third in line to Aegon's throne.)

So they make the "wrong" split. Rhaegar goes to the North which already is likely to support them, and Jon flubs diplomacy at Storm's End, and gets the extra angst of a brother dying or nearly dying because of him and fully igniting the war. (Jon's the type to go for the throat. He would kill Aemond in the hopes of preventing future dragon losses and live with the kinslayer title. And because he went after Jon's little brother.)

Lots of angst potential for all of your scenarios, of course, as you noted!

Rings the sound of crashes and falling debris, scattering on what was once called the Human territory. Nora, Kium, and Leon were all called back to their own races. One thing was sure. It was war. Noone knew why but the lords of all three races. The three friends were all worried for each other.

They were all on the battlefield as well.

CLANG! CLANG!

The sound of swords clashing rang in Nora's ears. Whooshing of magic from demonic mages and angelic powers fly around.

"Oh, curses.. Why do I have to be doing this..- Leon..?!"

Nora sees Leon, collapsed on the ground. He's.. dead. Someone killed him.

"....Isn't this normal, though? Everyone would die someday."

*Kium says, facing Nora. He has tears running down his face, and he points a spear at you.*

"I have to do this, Nora. I'm so sorry.."

*He tried plunging his spear in Nora's body, but she managed to stop him in time, holding the blade. It couldn't be stopped anyway. Bound to be. She threw the double edged spear at Kium, killing him.*

"It's normal.. Right? Normal. Totally normal.."

*Nora fell down om her knees, and sobbed for a while. She returned back after war was over, and spent life until the modern world.*

ok so I'm back again (I'm the anon who sent in that ask about ACOTAR and beach read) and you read once upon a broken heart??? omg I loved that book. I've still not read the second one though (bc a friend gave me the biggest spoiler and now I'm processing all the tragedy things). I heard the new book's coming out this year.

i have to read something with romance in it to get interested in it, because I'm not really into anything other than that, unless it's a really really really good book. other than that, my favorite genre would either be a) dark romance or b) fantasy. said friend got me into fantasy books last year, can't get them out of my head now. I've read some of sarah j maas's books, then the cruel prince series (haven't finished), once upon a broken heart, and the invisible life of addie larue.

then there's dark romance books. I've not actually read a lot, but one of the most memorable ones would be the cat and mouse duet ('haunting adeline' and 'hunting adeline'). it's VERY controversial, I really wouldn't recommend u to read it unless you're really into stalker romance. also read trigger warnings before.

my favorite trope? hmm, that's a hard question. honestly, I'd read anything that has a good plot and is interesting. but I noticed I mostly gravitate towards e2l and opposites attract (for some reason)

I read a LOT of angst. i love a good book that can make me cry.

my most anticipated-not-read-yet books? the shatter me series. aaron warner is gonna kill me when i start the series, all of my friends who've read the books say that he is the hottest book bf ever, so that's something I'm mentally preparing myself for. I have so many books on my tbr that I also cannot read the twisted series and also the good girl's guide to murder series.

and at last but not least, my favorite book? I've read so many good books this past year... I have several. so if you're talking about fantasy/magic it'd be the invisible life of addie larue, and rom-com/e2l would be better than the movies. you should read both of these books!!!

Hello! Sorry this has taken a second to answer - I went to Dublin for the weekend :) And again, I love this ask so thanks for coming back!! I've put all my thoughts below the cut.

Gah, I loved Once Upon a Broken Heart. I have heard that people thought the second one was sad ..? so I'm kind of dreading it. Another reason to wait for the third to come out so I can hopefully just power through and get to the (hopefully) happy ending. Just so hard to wait!! I want to know what happens now!!!

I get the need to have romance in a book. I read quite a range of genres but I always fly through romance books. I also love fantasy books - take me away from this horrid world please! But I've not really read any dark romance books. Part of me kind of likes the idea but I'm also not sure it's for me. Guess that's the perk of there being so many different books everyone can pick from.

E2L is a classic!! Alllll the angst. I want the main characters fighting and being forced to be around each other, trying to deny their feelings before they're making out and loving each other. YES!

Ooh I have the shatter me series on my shelf but haven't read either. I also want to read Icebreaker (which I haven't bought yet) and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. I haven't got the twisted series on my tbr but I've heard good things about it.

Yes I've read Invisible Life Addie LaRue and I loved it tooooo. I bought a special addition of the hardback just because. I kind of love Luc in some twisted way ... (which is why I think part of me would enjoy dark romance lol). Such a good book though, definitely one of my favourites too. I also love Six of Crows. If you've not read that you'd possibly enjoy.

What I hate in a character? I really hate when people do something I'd never do. Sometimes I can understand when a character does the opposite of what I want them to do, but I hate when they do something I think no one would ever do - struggling to think of examples, but maybe just taking back a guy who's been absolutely crap, or sacking off someone who's only ever been nice. I'm sure there's loads of things I hate, but can't think of anything else now. Tbh I think I struggle more with bad writing over bad characters - though there's probably not much difference between the two.

Gosh, all the tough questions. Character that owns my heart? You've never read Project Hail Mary but there's a character in that called Rocky, who honestly, I'd die for. I'd also die for every character in The House in the Cerulean Sea - again another banger if you've not read, it's not romantic but it's really soft and sweet.

Book bf. This has just come to me from nowhere, but Howl, from Howls Moving Castle. He is essentially like the film Howl if you've ever seen it. But more Welsh. And he's so chaotic and would probably drive me insane with his mess and antics but I'd love him all the same. Who's your book bf?

I'm not going to lie, I'm not a fan of Colleen Hoover. I've read and didn't actually mind Reminder of Him and It Ends With Us. But I recently read Verity and sorry if you enjoyed it but I really don't understand why people like it, I thought it was awful. I still kind of want to read It starts With Us. Favourite author atm is possibly Emily Henry, have you read any of her books? The first series I ever read was almost definitely Harry Potter, I remember queueing up at midnight to buy the books. you honestly have to wake up like half an hour earlier than you plan to bc it takes that long to wake him up lol

his face is smooshed into his pillows, soft snores falling from his mouth as you run your fingers through his hair to try and wake him

you run a hand up and down his back

“come on, we gotta get a move on,”

“baby, what the fuck? why do we have to leave so damn early?”

will cling to you until he fully wakes up

he is now a back pack, you are now his personal pillow, this is what you get for waking him up

but honestly, give him anything with caffeine or sugar in it and this boy is ready to fight god

pls understand that he wants to try every piece of candy and snacks at every single gift shop you go to

he’ll tap against the railings, whistle, complain, sit very randomly against the rails and nearly breaks a bone when he almost falls — which is every time he tries to mess around with the railings if he doesn’t have anything to do

he likes to come up with new handshakes while waiting in line which usually just turns into your guys playing thumb war after a while

he’ll also probably just be touching you in some sort of way

his hands on your hips, playing with your fingers or the ends of your hair, or fiddling with the belt loop of your pants

HE JUST LIKES TO TOUCH YOU OKAY ONE OF HIS LOVE LANGUAGES IS TOUCH YOU CANT CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE

and if it’s nearing the end of the day? oh forget it, the boy is tiirreedd

but hey, you don’t mind, your boy is having the time of his life

he’ll come out of the exit with such a big smile on his face basically HURDLING to get to you and tell you how much fun he had

and you just watch as he explains what happened on the ride animatedly with this beautiful childlike look in his eyes and you just can’t look away because he looks SO HAPPY

he doesn’t want to spend money on the overpriced waters and shit but will literally buy the entire stand if you start to look tired

“what’s this?”

“a water? you looked tired, it’s been a while since we drank anything, so drink up baby,”

if he wants a kiss or a cuddle he wants one. he does not care if you’re sweaty, he wants a kiss and a cuddle

right. now.

and if you let him hold your hand the entire day he will — he does not care that your hands are getting clammy

lithe digits curled themselves into small fists upon having both arms being stretched out, y/n released a quiet noise underneath her breath at how the tight knots that had formed in her back slowly came to loosen themselves with the stretching after the long hours of sleep in her worn out mattress from the few years of usage. with a and rubbing her face, the young woman slowly got out of bed before letting her legs lead her to the window, pulling the curtains back. 

the action, however, managed to let the morning’s brightness fill itself into the small dim bedroom of hers. with how she had only just roused from her sleep, her eyes immediately shut tight out of instinct before they blinked a few times to adjust themselves to the day’s way of greeting her. despite how painfully bright it was, a fond smile made its way over her tiers as soon as her irises were finally able to focus on the scenery right in front of her.

the skies weren't gloomy by all means, yet y/n could still see how the sun was hiding itself behind the slow-passing clouds, reminding the young woman of some type of cotton candy being hung on the sky. the bright flowers from her little garden she had proudly created ever since last year somehow became a contrast to the skies above, varying from the colours of yellow, red, purple, and green. looking closely, she could tell that there was a brief shower from last night due to the fact how damp the leaves looked and how her pots seemed to darken with their shade of colour. 

breathing in a sigh out of content, y/n pulled herself away from her window to go on about her morning routine, already making a mental plan of making a trip to the marketplace, where people from different districts would come together during the weekends to sell their produce in the city. though, it would be best to leave her house as early as possible. 

she wouldn’t want to miss out on the best items being sold for being late due to the long minutes of waiting for the second train. 

giving herself one more glance in the mirror, y/n’s fingertips gingerly brushed some of the stray hairs away from her face before clipping them with a simple hairclip in the shape of butterfly wings, the corners of her lips turning up ever so little with how satisfied she looked in the mirror. with one final brush of her hands along the creases of her dress, a low hum vibrated against the back of her throat.

she’s all ready to head to the train station.

upon arriving in the train station, her eyes widened ever so slightly at how there was quite a crowd. though, she should have expected it sooner knowing how the marketplace was very much known to attract visitors from all over the place, her area was no exception. glancing up at the sign, the bold red neon letters and numbers in the sign indicated that there was still a few more minutes to kill for the train to arrive. 

tugging her self-made knitted bag close to her side, the young woman decided to wait just near the sides where there were less crowds but close enough to give her access near the doors in case the train arrives soon. a clear lesson she had taught herself after the occasional times of standing quite a distance away from the automatic sliding doors of the train during the crowded times. 

while waiting, she noticed heavy footsteps making their way to where she was standing. as if on reflex, y/n turned her head to the side in wonder who it could be. much to her surprise, a tall young man, most likely around her age more or less, stood just a few steps away from her with both hands in the pockets of his trousers paired with a light blue flannel, a white t-shirt underneath it, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. she even noticed the slight waviness of his onyx strands, reminding her of the midnight sky she would see during one of her sleepless nights.

however, something had caught her eye. something was sticking on the back of his flannel, it wasn’t large though it certainly wasn’t that small to go unnoticed either. with her teeth digging against the inside of her cheek, y/n contemplated whether to tell him or leave it be, thinking that the male would notice it sooner or later as he went about his day. 

but of course, the urge to tear to pick the item away was bothering her mind, taking a deep breath as she  approached the tall stranger. 

giving his arm a couple of pokes to gain his attention, y/n couldn’t help but to feel her breath hitch at how undeniably attractive he is. however, admiring the stranger is not her biggest objective for now. timidly smiling up at the taller man, her index finger pointed out at the said item stuck on the back of his top. 

“excuse me, i couldn’t help but notice something stuck on your shirt.” she said, the timbres of her voice all soft. 

y/n noted how the male’s eyes blinked down at her widely before his hand came up to lightly feel around his back for the item, eyebrows furrowing once the tips of his fingers came in contact with the unknown object. finally able to take it off, the both of them looked down to see it was a sticker.

a sticker of.. a puppy?

it was when the taller male released a sheepish laugh that brought her attention back to his features, watching at how his free hand rubbed the back of his neck. she couldn’t help but to wonder if it was even possible for someone’s eyes to shine with a certain twinkle in them while smiling before their gazes met once again.

“ah, it must have been my little brother. he recently had a hobby of collecting stickers, i guess he somehow stuck one on me.” he explained, earning a quiet titter from the young woman, a hand over her lips as she did so. 

“and here i thought it was some type of fashion item.” she said in a playful manner.

once again, the two shared another round of brief chortles before the male pointed at the butterfly hairclip on her hair.

“believe me, it wouldn’t rival against your hairclip right there.” he said, playfully sending the young woman a wink, to which effectively made her cheeks grow warm from the compliment. 

“why thank you…?” she trailed off, head tilting to the side in question.

the onyx haired male seemed to catch the questioning tone in her voice, lips forming a small ‘o’ in realisation as he stretched out his hand towards her. though, before he could even tell her his name, the familiar rumbling noise echoed throughout the train station, both of their heads looking up at the source.

suddenly, a crowd came out of nowhere as soon as the doors of the train slid open, causing the two to separate so the others could pass. though disappointed that she didn’t get his name, y/n quickly made her way into the train, immediately looking around for a feat considering how she wouldn’t arrive after a few more stops to her destination. 

disappointed with how she noticed most of the seats were taken, the young woman decided to just stand, hoping that she’ll be able to sit during the stops at the stations ahead before the marketplace. though she couldn’t help but to wonder.

will the stranger stop at the same station as her? or will it be another fleeting conversation she would have with the number of strangers she had met? 

y/n concluded that the answer would be the latter. 

while she was too deep in her thoughts, the young woman failed to notice the beeping noise of the train, indicating that it will start its journey to the next station. it was when the sudden jerk of the train that had her emit a sharp gasp, losing her balance. her eyes quickly shut as she waited for the impact, yet it never came.

“careful there, butterfly.” a familiar voice reached her ears, making y/n’s head snap up. 

it could be the universe playing its tricks on you or the coincidence for the day is just too strong. 

“i have a name, puppy.” she retorted, causing both to chortle as she finally regained her balance, her hand quick to grab onto the pole near her for balance with how the train kept reaching the slight curves of the railways. 

“and i’m pretty sure the last time i checked, jeong yunho, was my name. not puppy.” the man, who she finally learned to be yunho, bit back with a gentle poke of his index finger against her arm. 

“well, jeong yunho, i’m y/n. l/n y/n.” 

from there, the both of them talked briefly as they waited for their stops. much to the female’s surprise, she learned that yunho is visiting the marketplace as well, claiming that he hasn’t been to one in a while due to having a tight schedule as of late, which y/n completely understood. 

y/n didn’t know what it was but she could feel a warm aura radiating off of the tall black haired male, it could be due to the fact that whenever he released a light laugh at a little joke they shared somehow made her feel safe at his side. she even took notice at how he tends to cover his lips with his hand whenever he laughed as they playfully bantered back and forth, finding it endearing. 

if she was being honest, she expected yunho to not spare another word to her because… well.. they were strangers. though, the young woman wasn’t complaining. she quite enjoyed his company, especially during their journey to the marketplace.

“is it just me, or has the marketplace grown a lot bigger since i last visited?” y/n heard yunho say as the two stepped foot to the marketplace, the female’s eyes glinted with interest at the various items being sold from different vendors.

“oh it definitely grew.” she laughed, tugging her bag close to her as the both yunho and y/n started walking further into the market.

it was never a dull moment whenever she stepped foot to the marketplace. other than having a huge variety of food, drinks, plants, or even antique items being sold in the marketplace, the colours of the place will never fail to make her admire just how pretty it looked in its own way.

standing at a distance where she wouldn’t block anyone’s path, the young woman fished her phone out of her bag, immediately opening the camera app as she did so. her tongue poked the inside of her cheek as her eyebrows furrowed in concentration to make sure that the image of the potted plants that held a variety of colours were in the frame, the corners of her lips twitching up once she got the perfect angle. 

but before she could even press the shutter, a certain tall black haired male suddenly came into the frame with both of his hands up in the form of two ‘v’ signs, a large cheeky grin plastering itself over his handsome features at the sight of her dumbfounded expression. in return, her eyes squinted at the male as if glaring at him, to which yunho simply laughed before his own eyes widened at the sight of her charging towards him, and quickly side stepping as soon as the young woman neared him. giggling to himself, yunho immediately caught her in his arms so she wouldn’t crash into a random stranger. 

“careful there, butterfly. don’t want you to be the center of attention instead of this place, hm?” he said, a teasing tone was laced in his words, then letting her go afterwards. 

with a click of her tongue, y/n nudged his side before looking down at the picture, yunho peeking down at the picture as soon as she lifted her phone up ever so slightly so the male wouldn’t bend down as much to see the picture, only to burst out into a brief chortle.

“you’re lucky you look cute in here, puppy.” she laughed, motioning for the both of them to continue their little adventure in the marketplace. 

and with that, the two spent their time in the place admiring the different things on display, sometimes stopping by from vendor to vendor that offered free samples of food and drinks being promoted. yunho even decided to buy a few snacks that he thought his family might like, especially a couple of sweets for his little brother with how he has quite a sweet tooth, as yunho had mentioned it to you. 

while he was busy waiting for the vendor to pack his snacks, y/n had wandered to the little vendor where they sold handcrafted accessories that piqued her interest with how adorable each of them looked. the vendor, a middle aged lady with a kind beam plastered over her lips along with eyes that held so much kindness in them, greeted the younger woman. 

the young woman couldn’t help but to admire each and every accessory being displayed, ranging from rings, to necklaces, to earrings, and even bracelets! it seemed like they were all carefully handcrafted with how intricate the designs looked, making it seem like they held their own personality that the middled aged woman had made. 

“feel free to browse through, my dear. i hope one or two could catch your eye.” the older woman said, eyes crinkling as she grinned over at y/n. 

the female merely smiled back in return before focusing her gaze back to the accessories, complimenting the designs of the other’s craft, much to the middle aged woman’s delight. it was then, a certain accessory caught her eye, reaching out for the item to inspect it a little closer. 

it was a simple bracelet. the band around it was in the colour of a green that reminded her of the leaves from her little garden, and throughout the little crevices of the bracelet were little faux flowers that would make it seem flowers would circle the wearer’s wrist if they wore it. and to complete the look, a single butterfly charm with its wings painted in the shade of light blue decorated the middle of the bracelet. 

without a heartbeat, y/n immediately told the vendor that she had made her choice, the middle aged lady grinning in return as she took the chosen item in her wrinkled hands, that held many years of experience in crafting, to pack the little bracelet up. while doing so, y/n busied herself to pull out the appropriate amount of bills to pay. however, before she even had the chance to hand the money to the older woman, someone had beat her to it. 

“will this be enough?” yunho grinned as the vendor took the money to count.

at the gesture, y/n’s eyes widened as she gently hit yunho’s arm in return, immediately telling the vendor she will pay for it instead. yunho, seeing this, merely protested and pulled the other back.

“consider this as a gift for telling me about the sticker earlier.” yunho said, laughing at the way y/n’s eyes were glossed with guilt as her teeth sank down into the plush muscle of her lower lip, still insisting to pay for the bracelet. 

“i didn’t even get you anything.” she murmured, causing yunho to soften his features.

“you can treat me to…” he trailed off as he looked around the place, spotting a vendor that sold crepes.

“you can treat me to those crepes in return, so it’s all fair!” he pointed out, y/n following his gaze before giving him a faint nod of her head.

“crepes it is, puppy!” 

and with that, the two of them went to said vendor right after y/n had received her bracelet. along the way, she couldn’t help but to feel a tingle of giddiness at the gesture, feeling touched at the gesture by the taller one. 

seconds turned to minutes, and minutes turned to hours as the two explored the marketplace, yet the concept of time was long gone from their minds with how the two of them shared little facts of each other and even silly stories that the two couldn’t talk about during the train ride here, that the two of them almost missed the fact that most of the sellers had started packing their stuff for the day. 

and from there, the both of them decided to head back.

during the train ride home, yunho stared blankly out the window as the both of them were able to find seats this time. while he was admiring the scenery outside, he couldn’t help but to be reminded of the events that had occurred today. who knew that a puppy sticker that was stuck on the back of his flannel managed to create a new friendship between him and the other.

speaking of the young woman, she was awfully quiet during the train ride. tearing his gaze away from the window to the other, yunho couldn’t help but to release a quiet chortle at the sight next to him. 

y/n seemed to have fallen asleep next to him with how her head was tipped down, occasionally tipping back up as if a small part of her yelled at the young woman that she was about to fall off her seat. 

biting his lip, yunho quietly pulled her head so she was leaning against him, knowing how much her neck would feel sore in the aftermath of keeping it in that position if he didn’t pulled her in so she could rest against him. he held his breath as he watched the other shifted ever so slightly in her sleep, only then releasing a sigh out of relief once her features relaxed once again. a small gentle smile made its way over his lips as he was sure you were comfortable before looking back out the window.

it took a little while more until the speakers announced that the train was nearing their station, the announcement enough to make the sleeping girl rouse from her sleep. however, she didn’t expect to feel something soft press against her cheek. 

confused, her eyelids fluttered open sleepily before looking over to her side. it took her a few seconds for her brain to finally register that all this time, she was leaning against the black haired male, immediately sitting up properly. the sudden action was enough to make yunho switch his attention from the windows to the girl next to him, laughing lightly at her wide eyes yet somehow they still hinted some sleepiness in them. 

“slept well, i reckon?” he teased with a quirk of his brow. 

with a sheepish grin playing on her lips, y/n apologised, to which yunho waved off in a dismissive manner and telling her it was quite alright. it was when the train came to a stop that the two of them gathered their things and stood up, making their way out of the compartment along with other passengers.

once outside, yunho turned around to face the young woman, smiling down at her. “i guess this is goodbye?” 

she didn’t know why, but y/n could feel a slight twinge of disappointment with the idea of them separating. to be quite honest, she enjoyed spending the unexpected time with the taller man. yunho, who managed to mask his disappointment, felt the same way before his features brightened ever so little. 

y/n watched in confusion as yunho felt around his pockets, wondering if he had left anything behind in the train before they stepped off. but instead, yunho pulled out his phone and made quick work of unlocking it, before handing it to her.

there, an option to add a new contact was shown on the screen of his phone.

“i enjoyed having you as my company today, and it would be a shame if we stopped talking immediately.” yunho started, tilting his head to the side.

“if you want, can i have your number? i would like to get to know you better.” he added.

honestly, y/n had wondered if this day could get any more surprising than it already has been. grinning up at the male, y/n agreed and immediately typed in her number. her thumbs hovered over the keyboard of his phone for a brief second, lips pursing as if she was in thought, before typing something in, then handing the device back to the tall man. 

“i had fun today. and once again, thank you for the bracelet.” she said, eyes mimicking small crescents as she smiled up at yunho. 

“i guess, i’ll talk to you later?” she added, her hands now playing with the fabric of her dress, yunho nodding immediately in response.

“of course!”

with the two bidding farewell, yunho stayed behind for a few more seconds to watch the young woman’s retreating figure until she was finally gone from his line of sight. looking down at his phone, he couldn’t help but to emit a low chortle from the name she had decided to put in her contact. 

“i knew ‘butterfly’ suited you.” he said to no one in particular. 

putting his phone away, yunho decided that it was finally time to go home, the corners of his lips tilting up as he made his way home, mentally making a note to himself to send a certain owner of a butterfly hairclip a text message as soon as he reached home.

Last Song: I’m currently listening to “Falcon in the Dive” from the Scarlet Pimpernel musical on loop. I watched one or two Scarlet Pimpernel movies when I was just barely too young to fully get what was going on, and the story’s held an odd but deep-seated place in my heart ever since. A few years ago I found out there’s a musical and most of the songs are pretty stellar (go listen to “Madame Guillotine” if you like big ensemble broadway numbers, it’s a banger, the bit where he cries out for God has been running through my mind on and off for a few days now haha not like that’s topical or anything), so every once in a while I spend a few days listening to them a lot.

Sometime last year I read the actual book, and got super into the whole concept of the Scarlet Pimpernel for a while. I plotted out Pimpernel aus for several fandoms, I read the entire wikipedia article, and I went looking for bootlegs of the musical. I didn’t find one, but I did find a full radioplay-style recording of the script, complete with full musical numbers, and listened to it like a podcast.

Reader, I was so disappointed. The play adds some scenes, bc a lot of the dramatic tension of the novel comes from internal conflict and that doesn’t stage super well, and the very first scene of this play – a play written in the NINETIES – features our dashing hero rescuing some aristocrats from a French prison, and then saying to the person in the next cell, who begs for rescue but is not an aristocrat, “We have enough of your kind in England.”

Enough! of your KIND! What in the merry frickety HECK my dudes!! The book has some rather unfortunate™ takes but it is from 1905, it’s regrettable but sadly to be expected. This play is from 1997. It has NO excuse. This scene wasn’t even in the book! What! the heck!

I was so disheartened that I lost my excitement for the play, and a couple songs later I stopped listening. It occurred to me just a few days ago that you could actually stage that ironically, with the person in the cell giving the audience a “can you believe this” look, and then the rest of the play could feature assorted non-aristocratic ensemble members constantly looking at the audience like they’re on The Office. And hey, maybe that’s what they did, or something similar – maybe that was never meant to be taken as a cleanly heroic stance, and the play deals with it in a complex way. It’s possible. I wouldn’t know. Kinda doubt it though, based on song lyrics.

Last Movie: I watched that new lesbian christmas movie with my family for christmas, the one with kirsten stewart and the guy from schitt’s creek. it’s very sweet and good and kinda sad, and I really enjoyed it. it also incidentally has the best gay best friend trope in probably anything ever, bc it’s not a trope (I didn’t realize until several hours after watching that it technically fits), it’s just a guy who is the protagonist’s best friend, and they’re just all gay, and then when he Gives Relationship Advice as a gay best friend always does, it’s advice about how to deal with your partner’s hangups around coming out.

actually every part of the gay best friend trope becomes better when they’re just best friends who are both gay. the big dramatic gestures (in this case, driving some ungodly distance in the snow on no notice) go from “haha how kooky” to “queer man will do anything he needs to to rescue his queer friend from an isolating & potentially triggering situation”. the relationship advice isn’t “honey you deserve some self-respect, treat yourself”, it’s a deeply sincere reminder of the vulnerability that is shared across almost everyone’s queer experience, and look I could ramble about this for a long time before reaching a coherent point but I’m INTO IT, okay? I’m into it.

Last Show: you want me to remember what show I last finished???? impossible, cannot be done, it was a long time ago and the adhd has eaten everything that happened before last week. here, instead I’ll tell you about another movie I watched, late at night with my mom in cozy companionship just a couple days ago. it’s called Quigley Down Under and it’s about a cowboy who goes to Australia and kills a bunch of racists, 10/10 would watch again. it’s from 1990 but it feels much older, with the music choices and the cinematography of a 70s Western. the cowboy is great, honorable and fearless and kind, but the breakaway star of this movie for me is the woman who attaches herself to his side and refuses to leave. her name is Cora, and she’s crazy, in the sense that she’s not altogether tethered to reality, but this never for a second diminishes her agency. she’s fierce and clever and compassionate, and she basically never does anything she doesn’t want to in the whole movie. her arc is about overcoming trauma by taking charge of her own fear and facing it head-on, she is never belittled or dismissed by the narrative or the protagonist, and look she’s just so cool. I love her. she’s so vibrantly alive. her story could probably have been handled with a bit more nuance, but honestly for the 90s it’s pretty great. I’m no expert, but I found nothing objectionable in it, just a bit of heavy-handedness.

anyway the theme of the movie is that racism is evil and racists deserve to be shot, and this too could have been handled better (not a single aboriginal character speaks a single line of english in this movie), but it follows through on that message in every way, while still being a fun kinda campy cowboy movie. overall a very good time.

Currently Watching: started showing my sister Hilda the other day, and she’s liking it! I love that show, it’s so incredibly cute. can’t wait to see season 2

Currently Reading: lmao I wish. lately the brain has firmly rejected all attempts to read anything of any length. currently pending, bc I was halfway through them when my brain stalled out, are tano’s fic What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too, a Toby Daye book - I think it was The Brightest Fell, I got like half a chapter in and haven’t picked it up in over a month, the Locked Tomb series, and probably a few other things too. ooh! also a book called Making Sex by thomas laqueur, which is my fancy academic reading that I’ve been doing in short bursts for the past year or two when I feel fancy and academic. it’s about the development of the concept of biological sex and of gender in Western society, and it’s fascinating. has among other things introduced me to the idea that until quite recently, fathers were a matter of faith. the mother? yeah, you can watch the baby pop out, we all know who the mother is. but the father? how can you know? how can you really know? we have paternity tests these days, but for all of human history up until now, we've just had to take fatherhood on faith. (not to mention we didn’t even know what fathers were contributing to the production of a fetus. clearly it was something, since you can’t get pregnant without a penis getting involved, but we have literally not known what until the past few decades. and that is wild. it has colored ALL of human history, all of our conceptions of society and family and kinship and gender, all of it, and it hadn’t even occurred to me until it was spelled out for me in this book, and it’s just......wow.

Salty, sweet or savory: for christmas my sister and I made seven different types of cookie, most of them involving chocolate somehow.

Craving: no bc I ate so many cookies. unless sleep counts. or maybe pringles, it’s been many moons since last I had a potato chip and I miss them.

remembers all your favourite foods and meals so if he senses you’re down he will make them for you.

most of the time you just eat in comfortable silence or you’ll listen to akaashi talk about the team.

he’s usually your alarm clock since he wakes up around the same time as you and being the responsible boi he is always makes sure to wake you up too.

you and bokuto get on v well so he makes more frequent visits now and you three will go out to eat or just sit and watch volleyball tournaments on TV.

he’s actually a very thoughtful and layered person?? like under that chaotic and disorganised persona

You both watch volleyball games on TV often and get HYPE AS HELL and yell at the TV vvv loud

once you actually received a noise complaint.

sometimes Kags will drop by because he left something at practise that Hinata had picked up for him.

you and Kags get on pretty well tbh like you both respect each other

he has no idea how you can live with Hinata and often refers to you as a saint
