hi hello! so i saw your requests were open and i had an idea sitting for a while now
i always listen to anime playlists (especially haikyuu ones) and i'd wonder what mha characters (bakugo, shinso, and todoroki) think if they saw their s/o listening to those
i think their reaction would be pretty hilarious especially when the playlist titles are "committing arson with tendou" or "hiding bodies with kuroo" (these are real playlists btw)
anyways i hope you have a good day! you don't have to do this request if you dont want to, take your time!(◍•ᴗ•◍)
their s/o listens to anime playlists
character(s) : bakugou katsuki, shinsou hitoshi, todoroki shouto (bnha)
legend : [Y/N = your name] they/them pronouns used, quirk not specific
headcanon type : fluff, crack-ish (x reader)
note(s) : those playlists will have the best songs, but also the weirdest titles to ever exist 💀 anyways, i decided that i want to make a separate masterlist for requests because of that new tumblr update. also,, this is quite short?? there’s not that much detail in the nuances this time around.
»»————- ♡ ————-««
Tumblr media
bakugou katsuki
i headcanon that bakugou has a picky music taste, so if he likes the music that’s in your playlist— then you probably have a good taste in music
“what song is this?” he asks when he’s driving you both to a date, his sudden peak of interest has you beaming
“oh, it’s from a playlist i found on spotify, i have a bunch of them. you could probably look through all of them.”
once the car reaches a red light, katsuki takes this chance to browse through the playlists you had— and that’s when he finds it.
he finds the playlists and their names, but they’re all named so,, oddly specific. ‘shaking ass with bokuto’ ‘making bank with kuroken’ ‘hiding bodies with oikawa’
his reaction is literally like this emoji🤨 clearly appalled by the strange names. “who the fuck named your playlists??”
“why, is there an issue?”
“first of all— i know you like that shitty volleyball anime, but HIDING BODIES WITH OIKAWA?? WHAT ARE YOU ON?”
you chortle at his reaction, and he doesn’t have an option to react— due to the red light turning green.
he can only grumble. you’re lucky that he loves you regardless of your weird spotify playlists.
he won’t say that outloud, but if it was any other person, he would’ve threatened to chuck them out the car
okay but you still have a music taste, so katsuki does end up using the playlists 😭 the bakusquad thinks he went crazy
Tumblr media
shinsou hitoshi
he doesn’t really care about what your music taste is. doesn’t matter if you listen to the chainsmokers, or clairo. because it’s not like you’re the type to judge HIS music taste
but he does really like your choice of music, and he frequently allows you to blast music during random hours of the day.
hitoshi waits for you to finish showering on his bed, listening to the music you chose to blast while you were in the shower
you suddenly call out to him, “‘toshi, can you switch the song? i think i accidentally left it on shuffle.”
the purple haired boy chuckles, remembering the last time you left your playlist on shuffle, “got it, what song do you want me to change it to?”
“you pick!”
he walks to your phone and opens up spotify, but he can only blink at the amount of odd and nearly absurd playlist names
he can only read each playlist in silence, questioning the motive behind each playlist
why are you like this??🧍
he eventually does change the song, and when you finally get out of the shower he’s silent.
“‘jumping off a cliff with bokuto kotarou’ is quite an interesting name.” he simply says, a knowing smirk gracing his usually tired features
“y-you saw THAT?”
“how could i not? you asked me to change the songs, did you?” and he’s not wrong. “2 hours is a pretty long playlist, don’t you think? that’s a large ass cliff.”
“i hate you,”
“well i love you too.”
rip to you 💀 he’ll hold this moment above your head.
Tumblr media
todoroki shouto
his music taste is IMMACULATE, but he does seem to share your music taste when you guys get together, doesn’t matter what kind of genre (just maybe not noise music)
shouto would be that type of person that would actually listen to the songs you recommend him, and he’ll share his piece of mind unlike some people
everytime you and shouto go somewhere, he plays three songs of his choice first— and for the rest of the car ride, the music choice is up to you.
“it’s your turn, Y/N. you can pick your music,” he says with a small smile, when he sees that you’re ecstatic to have the aux cord
you were feeling particularly lazy that day, so you decide to open your playlist through voice “siri/alexa/google, open ‘burning ushijima’s farm with oikawa tooru’”
MAN IS SO CONFUSED WHEN HE HEARS THAT, and he whips his head in your direction— staring in confusion
luckily, the car has reached a stop light— because he would’ve accidentally slammed on the breaks. “burning ushijima’s farm with oikawa??”
“oh, thats the playlist i have. do you prefer the ‘committing arson with tendou satori’ playlist instead?”
and he’s wondering on WHY YOU HAVE not one, but— TWO PLAYLISTS DEDICATED TO FIRE?? love, do you actually want to commit arson with those characters?”
like,, he’s RIGHT there. icyhot is right beside you 🙄 “oh well, it’s quite the name for a playlist, isn’t it? and the songs are amazing too!”
shouto blinks, and turns his head to face the road— “it’s,, something, i suppose. but the names are quite lovely. they fit you.” he says with a small genuine smile
HUH?? that really did surprise you.
shouto ends up downloading several of your playlists on his phone— ultimately scaring the dekusquad when they see it on his phone.

Kiro’s Rhythm Date Translation [CN]
Tumblr media
Hey, y’all! A quick note before you begin reading, I do not know any Chinese at all so Google Translate is the real MVP here. I’ve just taken the time to write down what comes out and changed some words here and there to try and make it make more sense. So apologies for the amateur translation in advance lol. This is just mainly to get the gist of the date before it eventually releases on the ENG server. Hope you enjoy it!
*Spoilers ahead for future content!*
[First Part]
After typing the last word of the report, I hit the enter key hard with my hand and then let out a cry of joy from my heart.
MC: It’s finally done!!!!!
Kiro: You’re finally done!!!!
Almost at the same time, Kiro, who was sitting on the sofa, took off his headset and threw it aside, raising his hands and cheering along with me. The next moment, his twinkling eyes looked at me.
Kiro: MC, let’s go out on a date! I thought for sure that this weekend would be spent working, but it seems that God still cares for us!
He didn’t wait for me to answer, he had already taken a few steps and sat across from me, holding the back of the chair and looking at me expectantly.
Kiro: Let’s go to the cake place that just opened up recently, I want to try it.
He held up his fingers and began to count the deliciousness of his thoughts. I cleared my throat and interrupted his daydream mercilessly.
MC: That’s it! The sunny weather is so nice, shouldn’t we go out and exercise? Savin asked me to supervise you. Recently, you’ve been slacking on your exercise regime to write songs. So...
Kiro: ...I knew it.
He lowered his head and sighed heavily but the happy smile returned in the next second.
Kiro: Let’s just exercise. Life lies in exercise and to enjoy life is to exercise with Miss Chips!
He told me to wait in a tone of voice I had never heard before and got up to change his clothes. I also went to change into sportswear that I had left at his house when we exercised last time.
Putting on my shoes and standing in the hall, I picked up the baseball cap and put it on Kiro’s head. I helped him straighten his messed up bangs.
He led the way down the hallway, but his toes tapped the ground like a beat as if he couldn’t wait.
MC: Make sure you don’t get recognized when we’re out later.
Kiro: Don’t worry, I promise to complete the mission!
Kiro obediently agreed. Before leaving the house, he turned his head and waved at Apple Box lying on the sofa.
Kiro: The task of housekeeping is left to you. We are going out!
I don’t know if Apple Box understood initially. To my surprise, he seemed to understand and replied with a “Woof!”.
[Second Part]
The weather outside was just right. The breeze that is blowing is warm on my face, almost as if it’s driving away the fatigue caused by the long days of work.
I followed Kiro and jogged forward aimlessly. From time to time, he slowed down and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me, humming as if he had just written a song.
Kiro: MC, are you tired?
As soon as I met his gaze, he couldn’t wait to inquire again and the thoughts in his eyes couldn’t hide.
MC: Although I am a bit tired, I can hold on for a while!
Kiro: Ah, that’s it, but-
He suddenly stopped halfway through his words and a trace of worry flashed across his face. I looked and stopped teasing him for the time being.
MC: Actually, it’s not impossible to rest for an hour or two.
Hearing these words, his eyes lit up.
Kiro: Then let’s rest for “one or two hours”!
He grabbed my hand and walked happily in one direction. The warmth of his palm matched the warmth of his eyes.
MC: Where are we going?
As soon as I asked, after turning a corner, a familiar street appeared in front of us. Tall and lush trees stood, exquisite old-fashioned buildings scattered. There were bustling young men and women and the smell of honey and coffee permeated the air.
--Isn’t this the street that has been very popular recently?!
I immediately caught on to what he was doing. I was amused but also a little annoyed.
MC: Have you planned the route in advance?
Kiro nodded, showing a natural smile.
Kiro: SInce I’m coming with you, of course. I have to plan every step in advance! There is a shop here where you can pick the toppings to put on a chiffon cake. The most popular one is raspberry.
I don’t know whether it was affected by Kiro’s vivid appearance or by the sweet fragrance in the air, Savin’s image slowly came to mind.
MC: It sounds really delicious!
Kiro: Alright then, let’s go! I have already made a reservation!
In a few seconds, I put aside my worries and joined him among the crowds on the street, enjoying the break.
It was a perfect moment, but all of a sudden, an unexpected guest stopped in front of us.
[Third Part]
Reporter: Excuse me, both of you! We are randomly interviewing attractive couples! Can you answer a few questions? *The translation came out as “high-value” so I’m going to assume it means “attractive”.*
The moment I saw the camera, I was already in front of Kiro, looking at this fashionable, young man with vigilance.
MC: Sorry, we’re busy at the moment. You can interview other people.
Reporter: But other people don’t fit the original intention of our “Feast for the Eyes” program! Only a few minutes of your time!
Reporter: Huh? Why does this man look a bit like…?
I had a bad feeling and I stretched out my hand to hold Kiro’s cuff. The next moment, the reporter slapped his thighs one by one--
Reporter: Yep! It’s Kiro!
His voice isn’t loud but it still draws all the eyes around us.
MC: You’ve got the wrong person! Let me trouble you!
I resolutely denied his claim before everyone could react. I immediately pulled Kiro into the crowd and quickly slipped away.
Kiro: (pouting) Why do we always encounter such things when we go out on dates?
In addition to the loud voices behind me asking, “Where’s Kiro?”, there is also Kiro silently complaining.
[Cut to Kiro’s house]
After hurriedly “escaping” back home, my highly elevated heartbeat finally began to calm down.
MC: Safe at last…
Kiro: I didn’t eat anything this time but I burned a lot of calories.
MC: Probably because God is standing on Savin’s side, we can do nothing but accept it!
Kiro: But I don’t want to accept it…
Kiro plopped on the sofa and hugged Apple Box and looked up at me with a sad pair of eyes.
Kiro: Alas, why can’t he make this world just for the two of us! *I had to change some of the wording here. What came out originally was kinda wonky.*
I looked at my phone and found out that what happened just now did not arouse any attention. I felt secretly relieved. Kiro saw this and looked out the window and saw the sun. He sighed.
Kiro: It’s so rare when the weather is this nice. We finally had some time together… It’s a pity not to do anything.
MC: Then let’s do something we can do at home. Perhaps watching a movie?
Kiro: Movies… Are there any good movies recently?
Although he appeared to be uninterested, he still put his head down and browsed the newly released movies with me.
Before I had a chance to look, a furry head squeezed between the two of us and pushed Kiro aside.
Kiro: Apple Box, don’t make trouble… Wait, what are you biting?! Ahh! Let go of my game controller!
Kiro swooped forward and Apple Box dodged swiftly. In the hot pursuit of Kiro chasing Apple Box, he accidentally bumped into some things.
The screen that had just stopped at the movie interface suddenly switched and several dynamic virtual characters appeared. As if drawn to this, Apple Box blinked his beady eyes and looked straight at the TV screen.
Kiro quickly grabbed the other half of the game controller from Apple Box’s mouth and clicked it angrily. Little brains.*I don’t know what “little brains” is haha.*
Kiro: I finally caught you, bad guy!
Apple Box, whose “toy” was suddenly taken away, looked at Kiro innocently. He wiggled his ears aggrievedly. I was softened by his eyes and I reached out to rub his head.
MC: Apple Box, you must be a good boy and not be so rowdy.
Apple Box: Woof!
As if he understood, Apple Box shook his head obediently and his fluffy fur rubbed against the palm of my hand. He then turned around excitedly and wagged his tail at the TV screen.
Kiro and I looked at the dazzling picture on the screen at the same time. The characters on it also writhed in time.
Kiro: Miss Chips, let’s play a motion sensory game!
MC: Why don’t we play this? Sports and leisure combined are great!
Talking in unison, we both laughed out loud. After deciding what to do, Kiro and I sat down on the carpet in front of the TV, choosing a game that we could play for a while. He put his head on my shoulder, expressing his opinions from time to time.
Kiro: I think this game is good! It’s fun!
Kiro’s breathing on my neck was ticklish and I shrank my neck. I watched the screen being manipulated to jump up and down to escape. The character retreated into himself.
MC: This feels too difficult. Let’s look at the next one.
Kiro: It’s not that bad! I set a world record in only one attempt!
He raised the corners of his mouth as he spoke, his expression extremely proud. Although he knew that as KEY, he was skilled at all aspects in the game.
MC: Well, then this game is not challenging for you…!
As if I had seen myself in the game, I decisively switched to the next interface.
Kiro: Eh? I don’t seem to have played this game before…
I was overjoyed when I heard this and made a decision almost immediately.
MC: Then let’s play “Just Dance”!
This is a very popular music and dance game recently. Players can choose different dancer characters to play as. Players have to imitate the people on screen and dance in order to win.
Because this game is simple and easy to use and, and has many popular songs, it has been popular all over the world after it’s release.
MC: Now both of us are novices. This is equal ground!
I gave a controller to him, nodded and said in a serious tone. Kiro raised his chin slightly with a smirk.
Kiro: So, MC, do you want to challenge my status as KEY?
MC: I won’t give up easily!
After that, the game begins.
[Fourth Part]
If I could go back in time by just 10 minutes, I definitely would’ve said something different about the game being “equal grounds”.
MC: What! Jumping wrong again!
The movements the two of us were doing were obviously strange at first. But after a while, we became one with the dance.
MC: Why am I always slow!
Kiro: Don’t worry! Treat this as a novice level and then adapt slowly from there.
MC: Then this newbie level is too difficult for me…
I was bitter. I felt as though my hands and feet were rebelling against me.
Kiro: It’s not difficult as long as you master the basics. For example, this movement here. As long as your hand is raised to this position, you will be guaranteed to pass.
He gestured for me to do the movement that stumped me just now, and I followed suit.
MC: Like this?
Kiro: Almost.
He walked up to me, grabbed my wrist and raised my head, then tilted my head to the other side.
MC: Is this it?
I followed his instructions and turned into ten twisted poses. I found the smile on his face grew wider and wider and he couldn’t help but laugh.
Kiro: Puff hahaha, MC, you are so obedient!
MC: KIRO!
I became annoyed at once. I reached out to try and mess up his hair but he leaned back and dodged me smoothly.
Kiro: I was wrong! I was wrong! I was wrong!
MC: I won’t let you get away!
I kept tickling the sensitive skin on his waist. Kiro dodged from left to right and wrapped me in his arms. He is like a koala. He has me locked firmly in his arms, making it hard for me to move.
Kiro: Haha, so you won’t be able to tickle me!
There was a bit of pride in his laughter and his hot breath after exercising clung to my back, even in my chest. The rhythm of our heartbeats can’t be concealed. My heartbeat somehow increased.
MC: I, I won’t do what I did before again. Let go of me first, or how else can we continue playing the game?
Kiro: Well, alright.
He released his arms, looking reluctant, but turned his attention back to the game again.
Kiro: So this time we will warm up with the easier songs and then challenge each other with the more difficult ones!
Tumblr media
I didn’t know what Kiro’s “simple difficulty” meant until the melody of a familiar foreign nursery rhyme played from the speakers. But soon I put the matter of nursery rhymes aside and danced awkwardly with the little dino on screen.
With the cute and cheerful melody, everything becomes more fun. Compared with the previous song, Kiro danced such an overly cute dance. It was a bit strange.
He stared at the screen earnestly, making movements while humming his own jumbled lyrics to the tune of the music.
Kiro: (singing) I’m a little dinosaur~ little dinosaur~
His blonde hair puffed up by the hairband also jumped along with his movements. A sweat bead from his forehead “ticked” off and fell onto his collarbone hidden by his collar.
MC: Obviously I am the little dinosaur!
The “perfect” floating above the screen made my previously annoyed mood become more excited. The magic of the game is to make people forget all their troubles. When I’m with Kiro, these simple dances turn into the simplest happiness.
After the song ended, I watched the rating jump up to four stars. I couldn’t help but hug Kiro and cheer.
MC: Ahh, it’s four stars! Only a little bit short away from getting full stars!!
Kiro: See, that wasn’t so hard for you, was it?
MC: Sure enough, it’s not difficult to master the trick you taught me!
I confidently picked the next song to “conquer” but suddenly saw a familiar name.
MC: Huh, there is this song?
It was a song from Kiro’s latest album. I quickly turned to look at him. However, Kiro frowned slightly while staring at his song, his expression a bit solemn.
Kiro: This song was licensed to them. But I feel that it’s a bit awkward to dance to my own songs in the game.
Seeing him acting unlike his usual self, I felt a sense of curiosity. Even though the “highly difficult” sign made me a little worried, I still pressed the confirm button decisively.
MC: Let’s dance to this song. I want to see if the original dancer can beat the game!
Meeting his gaze, Kiro hesitated for a second and quickly gave in.
Kiro: If you want to dance, MC, you can, but this dance is very difficult. Don’t force yourself to.
MC: Hmm!
Accompanied by the “START” character flashing, the intermingled sound of the electric guitar and keyboard sounded. Kiro held the controller and imitated the people on the screen, raising his hand to make a pose.
Boom--
The powerful drum beats go straight to the heart. Kiro’s face is very serious and every movement that he executes is in rhythm with the music and is full of power.
He stepped barefoot on the carpet, clearly wearing ordinary sportswear, but he seemed to be standing in the centre of the stage.
And in this small living room, me being the only audience, got to “exclusively” enjoy this performance. I don’t know if I should watch him wholeheartedly or if I should continue to clumsily dance with the animation.
While I was lost in thought, I accidentally tripped over my left foot with my right. Seeing that the hand that was swung out was about to hit Kiro, I withdrew it quickly.
I was hit with an elbow
MC: Ouch!
I squatted down, clutching the area I was hit, and buried my head between my knees.
Kiro: MC? What happened?!
He squatted down worriedly in front of me with his arms open. It looked like he wanted to hug me to comfort me but was worried that it would be bad so he stopped midway.
Kiro: What’s wrong? Is your leg cramping?
MC: Just now, I…
I shook my head, thinking of the silly thing I did just now. My ears and face were beet red. Before I had time to explain, Kiro put one hand behind my back and one hand under my knees and lifted me up.
MC: Wait! I can walk by myself!
He denied my protests and placed me gently on the sofa in a few large strides. He slowly lifted up one of my feet and carefully pressed the tight muscles of my calf with the pad of his finger.
Kiro: Does it hurt? Tell me if it hurts.
I forgot to respond. Seeing that I wasn’t saying anything, he slowed his movements down again and became more gentle. The sunset shining from the outside hit the top of his head forming a very gentle glow. It gave me the urge to rub it.
MC: Kiro, I’m fine. I didn’t hurt myself by forcing myself... I was just watching you…
The more I talked, the quieter I became. The temperature of my cheeks rose. After all, it would be too embarrassing to explain that I hit myself while dancing!
It was silent for a few seconds and Kiro finally laughed out loud.
Kiro: I didn’t expect my Miss Chips to be so honest. Now, just look at me.
Kiro raised his hand in a squatting position, and I found myself looking into his gentle blue eyes. When the music hit it’s climax, the drum beat gradually grew faster and got closely intertwined into an airtight net as if the soul is enveloped in it. *Wording was a little weird here. I think it’s supposed to be a heartbeat but the kanji for heart (心) isn’t in the original text.*
Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
Like my heartbeat right now, it's so strong that it’s about to beat out of my chest. Kiro seemed to see right through me and stood up. He supported the back of the sofa with one hand and held my wrist with the other to prevent me from escaping. When his nose came up to meet mine, he rubbed it.
Kiro: MC, I’m curious…
Looking at my bewildered and embarrassed face, he suddenly gave a sly smile.
Kiro: Is the rhythm of your heartbeat the same as mine right now?
His eyes were full of warmth and gentleness. His words were like a poet writing lyrics, a sorcerer chanting a bewitching spell.
Kiro: It is the same as mine. Everytime it beats. It only beats for you.
The breath that belonged to him slowly approached, the music continued playing in the background, and the game on screen kept showing “miss”.
The rhythm of our heartbeats has already been in sync with the beat and sweat. *This last part here was a little wonky with the wording*.

@trenchcoatandfreckles prompt: “bucolic” or “bungalow” in other words: cas moves to the idyllic countryside and meets dean winchester, who owns a garden shop down the road. destiel. 1.7k. fluff. undercurrent of a quiet desperation to escape one’s life.
“So, where you gonna go?” asks Cas’ nosy, but well-meaning, landlord, holding out his hand.
Cas drops the keys into his open palm. “Somewhere bucolic,” he replies.
Frank wrinkles his nose. “What is that, some kind of sickness?”
Cas picks up the remaining box off the floor, rendering the tiny apartment officially empty. “Sure,” he sighs.
“Well, good luck,” Frank says, wiping his hand on his jeans. “You were one of my best tennants. Hope the next tenant is as dead quiet as you. It was like a tomb in here the whole ten years you were renting, you know.”
“Well. Thank you. I think.” After a tentative handshake with Frank, Cas sees himself and his box of records out.
Two weeks ago, it seemed like a good idea. He was on his stiff couch, wine glass in hand, browsing available bungalows to rent in a rural part of New York that he’d never heard of before. His eyes scanned an available cottage: the honey wood floors, the tucked-in ceilings, the herbs dangling from the kitchen ceiling, sunlight streaming. He looked around his sterile, hyper-modernized studio apartment and there was no contest.
He sent an application for an available house to rent in the same breath that he sent a move-out notice to Frank.
The commute to his current job, of course, would be an hour’s train ride, compounded with the fifteen minute drive to the station. His sister Anna called him last week to inform him that he was possibly having a mid-life crisis.
Now with his apartment all boxed up, and sitting on a train with his box of records and the moving truck a day in front of him, Castiel is beginning to agree with her.
The bungalow Cas rented is nestled between two cherry blossom trees. He feels like he’s read about it in a book somewhere. There’s a daily farmer’s market a mile away, with another empty and unrented bungalow in between. Apart from that, he’s alone but for the birds and fields and sunshine.
He loves the isolation more than he should. He calls in sick to work the first week. Then the next. It morphs into him writing a truncated email to his boss announcing his resignation. He deactivates his email after that.
There’s enough in his savings to get him by, he assures a hysterical Anna over the phone after he breaks the news, and he’ll find a job closer to where he lives. (He again refuses to tell Anna his new address, knowing it’ll only end up in her showing up with a small army to drag him back to the city)
With his self-imposed free time, he starts a garden. The lofty dreams of cooking with fresh herbs and vegetables fill his mind for days, until he’s greeted morning after morning by empty soil with no sprouting green.
He gives up after a week. Googling nearby garden shops points him to the only one within a forty-mile radius: Winchester Hardware & Garden. He rides his bike a couple of miles down the dirt road, past the farmer’s market, to the small, unassuming green building that’s only slightly bigger than his own bungalow.
A bell obnoxiously announces his arrival as he pushes open the rusty screen door. He’s greeted with shelves upon shelves of sloppily organized garden supplies, seed packages, and planters. There’s a counter tucked into the corner with a cash register valiantly craning its neck up from the cluttered mess that surrounds it.
“Just a second!” calls a voice from somewhere amongst the shelves. There’s a crash that follows.
Castiel cranes his neck around one of the shelves, looking for the source of the commotion. “Do you need help?” he calls back.
“Nope, should be good,” assures the disembodied voice, “just this goddamn—” There’s no elaboration as another, louder, crash punctuates the end of the sentence.
Castiel stands awkwardly in the door frame, unsure of whether to help or flee a potential crime scene, when a tanned and dirty-blonde man rounds the corner. He’s clutching something white and pissed off in his arms.
“Sorry about that,” the man says, breathing heavily. He locks his arms tighter against the cat struggling in his arms. “Can I help you with something?”
Castiel stares at the cat. “Was that what all that banging was?”
“Huh? Oh. Yeah.” The man playfully jostles the cat, eliciting a low meow. “She gets into the back of the shelves where all those dangerous tools are, and I have to make sure she doesn’t cut her own head off.”
Castiel doesn’t point out the issue of housing a cat in a store with dangerous tools in the first place. Instead: “I see.”
“Her name’s Fluffy,” the man offers.
“But she has no fur,” Castiel says as Fluffy proudly swishes her naked tail.
“Yeah. It’s hilarious.” The man grins. “My brother picked her up from the side of the road. Kid has a bleeding heart for helpless animals.” Fluffy is deposited on the counter, where she sits and glares; the man turns and crosses his arms. “So, anything you need?”
Castiel rips his gaze from the man’s very piercing, very green eyes. “Yes. I’m having a problem with my garden. I think it needs fertilizer.”
“Elaborate on your problem,” the man says.
“Well, nothing’s growing,” Castiel explains, trailing off uncertainly as the man once again disappears around a corner.
“Any pets?” he asks.
“Excuse me?”
“Any pets,” the man says impatiently behind a shelf, “any pets that would get into your garden and eat stuff when you’re not looking.”
“Well… no. No pets. Although I was thinking of getting a cat.” Castiel glances at Fluffy, who is grooming a naked paw. “One with fur.”
The man barks out a laugh. He comes around the corner, holding a large box propped on his hip. “And you’ve been watering them? Pulling any weeds around them?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re sure that you’re not pulling the plants accidentally instead of the weeds?”
Castiel fixes the man a look. “I’m not that stupid.”
Raising a hand in surrender, the man says, “Hey, you’d be surprised the stories I get from other customers.” He deposits the box onto the counter. “Well, this should help—good old fashioned plant food. Works for most things you’re trying to grow.”
After doing a quick calculation of measurements in his head, Castiel decides, “I don’t think I’ll be able to take that today. I rode my bike here and I’m not sure I can fit the box anywhere…”
“Relax, the bags are inside.” The man pulls apart the box’s top and hoists out a much smaller bag, one that will undoubtedly fit into Castiel’s backpack. At Castiel’s confirming nod, the man rounds the corner and types a number into the ancient cash register. ‘Fluffy’ rubs against his hand, slowly the process. The register inexplicably dings. “It’ll be 25.50,” he announces.
Castiel fishes his wallet from his back pocket. “Do you take a credit card?”
“Yeah.” The man chews at the bottom of his lip, frowning down at Castiel’s fingers that are fumbling to get the credit card out of the tight wallet’s pockets. “You said you biked here?”
“Yes,” Castiel says amidst the struggle, “why?”
“Nah, just that… you can’t live very far from here, then?”
The credit card finally emancipated, Castiel hands it across the counter. He notes the dirt caked underneath the man’s fingernails as their hands brush. “I just began renting a house a few miles down the road. Just a week ago.”
The man grins. “You’re one of Benny’s tenants?”
“I think that was his name.”
“I know him. Nice guy. Runs a diner when he’s not landlording way too many properties.” The man slides the credit card through a small attachment on his phone, frowning again in a thoughtful way. “This might not work, you know.”
“The credit card?” Castiel asks.
“No, the plant food. This whole area used to be a swamp—so the soil sucks.” He pets Fluffy’s head distractedly. “So you might have to come back anyway.”
“I did notice that the soil was sandy,” Castiel agrees. “Should I… Buy anything else in lieu of this?”
The man rubs the back of his neck; Castiel is momentarily distracted by the way his fingers leave imperceptible tracks in his tightly trimmed blonde hair. “Well, if this doesn’t work, I’d have the examine the soil. See if the acidity is right, if the plants are getting enough sun, that kind of thing.”
“So you’d have to come over?” Castiel asks, taking the card that the man hands back to him.
“Well, yeah.” The man clears his throat. “To examine it, and everything.”
“That wouldn’t be too much trouble?”
The man sweeps his arm in the air to gesture to the quiet shop. “Well, I suppose you would be taking me away from my customers that so obviously need me.”
Castiel huffs a laugh. He tentatively holds the bag of plant food in his arms. “Then I’ll come back and ask for your help if this doesn’t work.”
They smile at each other, a beat too long, a beat too delayed to notice a shift in the energy between them. “Who should I ask for?” Castiel is somehow able to miraculously ask, after the moment that is a beat too long.
“Huh? Oh. Dean. Ask for Dean. That’s me, I—” The man, Dean, shakes his head as if to get himself to stop talking. He reaches out a hand. “It’s nice to meet you, uh—”
“Castiel. Cas.” Castiel holds Dean’s hand and shakes. It’s warm and softer than he’d expect a gardener’s hands to be.
“Well, great. Cas.” Dean drawls Castiel’s name out thoughtfully, carefully, like tasting a fine wine. Castiel suppresses a shiver. “I’ll see you again soon, then. Maybe.”
“Maybe.” Castiel adjusts the bag in his arms. “Goodbye, Dean. Fluffy,” he adds, nodding at the cat who is ignoring the situation, and instead is stretching to great lengths in order to lick her backside.
Castiel steps out into the warm air; the bell on the door that announces his departure is less obnoxious now. He unlocks his bike, adjusting the kickstand, wincing at the creak of the rust on the metal.
Placing his backpack carefully onto the bike seat, he opens the zipper and deposits the bag of plant food into the backpack. Very sternly, he whispers to it, “Don’t you dare work,” before zipping up his pack, and riding on the dirt road back to his new home.

here’s the other thing i already wrote for the esports girls i posted last night
this one also has an issue with game stuff between america and japan, where i spent more time trying to look up details of a specific event pokemon distribution in japan than actually writing the whole thing, before giving up and using the american distribution as a stand-in
under the cut
The nearest game store was a little out of the way of Aiko’s usual daily routine, but she finally had a day off work and only morning classes. She just had to go to the register and pick up a card with the serial code from the promotional distribution, and then she could get udon for lunch at a great place she rarely had an excuse to go to, which was the real reason she was driving to the other side of town for a game she barely had the time to play.
She didn’t particularly need to make the trip, but she had been playing Pokémon for a long time and was never able to get a Mew in the newer games. There was no guarantee she’d be able to get everything from the year-long event, so she might as well do what she can.
The trip went as usual; the store wasn’t particularly busy on a weekday, and the only sound that stood out over the speakers was a loud girl with a stack of used games in her hands, asking another girl out on a date.
“I’m not…like that,” the cornered girl responded, backing away in palpable discomfort as she picked up a game box off the shelf.
“Ah, really?” The louder one raised an eyebrow and looked her up and down quickly like she didn’t believe her, but shrugged. “Can’t blame me for trying, right?”
She didn’t get a response, and Aiko ignored the pair to ask the employee at the counter for the code. She’d only just turned away from the counter to leave the store when someone blocked her way. The loud girl, just spurned, was now standing in front of her with a cocky smile. When Aiko tried to move out of her way, she was met with, “Hey, wait.”
“What is it?” Aiko didn’t have the time or patience to deal with someone desperate enough to hit on every girl she saw if she wasn’t at work, even if she was tall and pretty.
“You’re picking up the Mew code, right?”
“I already did, and that’s all I came here to do.” She took a step to the side, but the opposing girl took a few steps back to meet her.
“You know, most girls who play Pokémon should be pretty interested in me,” she told her, grinning obnoxiously.
“Why’s that?” Aiko asked, deciding her chances of a clean escape were better if she humored her.
“I’ve been told I must be part Lickitung,” she boasted, licked her lips suggestively.
With a disgusted groan, Aiko turned on her heel and left the store, not looking back to make sure she wasn’t being followed but listening for the lack of footsteps behind her. She made it to her car without incident, reassured in the knowledge that at least her lunch wasn’t going to check her out.
---
Late shifts ending at almost midnight didn’t leave much time to cook dinner, especially with a stack of homework to finish. Aiko kept her bitter thoughts about the coworker she was expected to cover to herself, and with the extra hours she could at least afford to splurge on a premade bento to save time for studying.
She was at this particular Family Mart between work and home at least twice a week because of work, and even more often when school became particularly rigorous. The occasional bento or rice bowl was a nice break from instant noodle cups, when she dared treat herself.
The only other person in the store was another girl with an armful of sodas and snack foods; she was familiar, but it wasn’t a feeling so strong Aiko could place her memory anywhere, nor did she care to try when it was this late. However she was struck with realization when the other girl grinned smugly and asked, “Have I seen you somewhere?”
“Doubt it,” Aiko lied, not wanting a repeat of their last meeting at the game store.
“Hmm.” She bit the inside of her cheek in thought before her face lit up. “Ah! You were the little Pokémon master getting Mew, right? I don’t easily forget cute girls that don’t tell me no.”
“Then I’m telling you right now I’m not interested,” she said firmly, ready to tell the store attendant she was being harassed.
“Ah?” She looked confused, but then shrugged. “Alright.”
Aiko looked at her suspiciously, but she only smiled. At her silence, she finally introduced herself. “I’m Ren, by the way.”
“Alright.” She didn’t offer her name in return.
“What are you doing here so late, anyways? Long night planned?” Ren wasn’t aggressively flirting anymore, but she wasn’t leaving her alone, either.
“Yeah, studying,” she said, making a point to emphasize she was doing something important. “You?”
She’d only asked out of the forced habit of indulging a customer in conversation, and winced when Ren started speaking, now engaged. “My little sister wanted to marathon some older games, I’m on a snack run.”
There was a lot in that sentence that didn’t match the impression Aiko had of Ren. “Your sister?”
“Yeah, she’s probably just sneaking a nap while I’m out, we started yesterday so she’s tired.” Despite her words, she didn’t look like someone who had been awake for about 36 hours. All-nighters for Aiko meant an even grumpier disposition than usual, dragging her feet and spacing out when she wasn’t buried in work. “But she doesn’t want to get caught sleeping before I do, thinks it’ll make her look weak.”
“Sleeping is weak?” Aiko asked this skeptically, almost judgmentally, at the statement.
“Eh, she’s 16, let her think what she thinks for now.” Ren grinned again. “And she’ll never get through the Castlevania games if she doesn’t refresh her mind a bit.”
“I can’t even remember the last platformer I played,” she said absently. If a game didn’t have a save function, she was guaranteed to not have the time to finish it, and the platformers she grew up with were intended to be beaten in one long session.
“Wanna skip the books and come over?” Ren’s smile turned hungry. “I was hoping to invite someone over for an excuse to sneak off into my room, catch a nap myself.”
Aiko decided that was definitely enough socializing with Ren for the rest of her life, and placed her bento on the check-out counter, ignoring that she was there before her. “Good luck staying awake for your sister.”
---
The thought of old-school platformers had stuck to Aiko’s mind even weeks after her last meeting with Ren. Maybe she didn’t have the time for one she grew up with, but a quick Google search assured her that the modern games in classic series had save functions. The Wii U she’d received as a gift a long while back had barely gotten used, but there were Mario games for the console. She could find the time for a level or two now and then.
It rested better on her conscience to buy a used copy, since she was putting an advance on her free-spending limit. The itch to play couldn’t wait another two weeks to be scratched.
One of the last people she expected – or wanted – to see was in the store already, browsing the Playstation shelf. Ren looked up and saw her, smiled, and Aiko’s stomach sunk in dread before Ren did absolutely nothing. She gave her a quick wave of recognition before turning back to the games display.
Aiko was more shocked at her inaction than her forward actions the previous meetings, and stayed on her toes on her way to the game, and then while in the line. She berated herself for the invasive thoughts – “she’s kinda tall,” “she’s pretty when her mouth is closed,” – and kept focused on the counter at the front of the line. Some yen and about three meters were all that was between her current position and leaving unscathed with the game.
Her self-control wavered at the counter when she paid, and was unable to not ask, “Can I borrow a pen?” She stepped aside while the next customer in line paid and scratched her email onto the back of the receipt.
Aiko called out, “Hey!” while walking up to Ren, catching her attention and shoving the receipt into her chest. She spoke over her before she could flirt and ruin her bold moment. “I’m not online until late most nights, don’t expect a response.”
Ren only managed a shaken, “Huh?” before Aiko turned on her heel and rushed out the door, heart pounding in anticipatory regret. She’d only given Ren her email, not her phone number or something else easily traceable. If she did regret this, it was easy to block and ignore her.
Thoughts of everything that could possibly go wrong, minor and major, weighed her mind down. She was almost nauseous with worry on her way home, and the ping! from her phone alerting her to an email did nothing but exacerbate it. In her rush to return to her apartment and check the message, Super Mario 3D World was forgotten in the car’s front passenger seat.
Aiko threw herself to the couch immediately, taking up every cushion in an effort to get as comfortable as possible before diving into risky territory. She opened the email, and read the short message. “Hey there Pokémon master, what made you change your mind?”
Her immediate reaction was to bitterly send back, “It’s Aiko.” It was too early in their...whatever stage of their acquaintanceship it was, for pet names. Before Ren – it was obvious that the unfamiliar address was her – replied, she sent a second message. “Changed my mind about what?”
It was a few seconds before the next message came. “You said you weren’t interested, and then you throw your email at me. Can’t stand not making the first move?”
Aiko paused to think about what it was that changed her mind. “Because you remembered that.” She didn’t have much more of an answer. What was most flattering wasn’t her efforts to get close to her, but that she remembered her, and more importantly, remembered what she’d said.
“Are your standards that low wwwww,” was her quick reply, and Aiko felt a twinge of irritation that she was taking her honest praise so lightly. It was followed with, “But I told you I remembered.”
“I didn’t expect you to remember, honestly.” She seemed too carefree, like she was spreading herself too thin to remember anyone for as long as the months between their initial meeting.
“It’s hard to forget a girl as cute as you, especially one who’s interested.” She punctuated it with a winking emoji.
“Or it’s easy to remember if your flirtatious gimmick drives them all away, and I’m the only one who didn’t shut you down.” She worried she sounded too annoyed; she was annoyed, but charmed by the brazen front that had some substance behind it.
“It worked on you, didn’t it?”
“What ‘worked’? Who said we’re anything?” Aiko had realized she was essentially accepting being asked out, but wanted to see what other depths she was hiding.
“So you don’t wanna be my girlfriend then?”
Aiko paused and considered the question. It sounded like a strong word for two people who were only just now emailing each other, but the thought didn’t turn her off either. “Maybe if you take me on a date first I’ll consider it.”
The next reply came quickly enough Aiko wondered if she used it before. “Get out your Pokémon and let’s battle. If I win, I get to take you out to dinner. You win, and I’ll treat you to dinner.”
It was cliché and corny, but Aiko let herself smile at the attention directed at her. She texted back, “Tonight is the only night I’m free this week.”
“Then I guess I’d better cancel my date with Zelda, I’ll see you at 7.” She followed it with a kissing emoji, and some options for restaurants that they could go to. Aiko slowly felt that free time rut veer away, with school work not on the table, and something more exciting than a game coming up in just hours.

How To Write An Essay: Good day, I hope you are cool? Writing essays is something every student has come across in one way or the other, and each time they face this challenge, making it better than the last is always a goal.
I guess the last time you wrote an essay you did very well huh? Well, we are going to show you how to step this essay and take it to the next level.
Every other “How To Write An Essay” tutorial you’ve read is cool, but this article here is the coolest you’ll ever read, now lets write this essay
What Is An Essay
Wikipedia definition of an essay: Wikipedia says that An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author’s own argument — but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of a paper, an article, a pamphlet, and a short story. Essays have traditionally been sub-classified as
formal and informal. Formal essays are characterized by “serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length,” whereas the informal essay is characterized by “the personal
element (self-revelation, individual tastes, and experiences, confidential manner), humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme,” etc.
We’ll divide this article into two. 1. Tips To Write An Essay Perfectly 2. Steps To Write An Essay
Tips To Write An Essay Perfectly
Below are tips to prepare for that killer essay in English. For the records, this is more of a formal essay than an informal essay. The steps and tips here are the type you use when you write an essay to your teacher, professor, a newspaper agency or for publication.
1. Study Other Essays
Every time you read an article or read a book in one way or the other you learn a thing or two. Studying people’s essays most especially the best of the best is a major boost to your essay escapade.
When I say ‘Read Essays’ I mean read every essay you can lay your hands on, essays by your peers, friends, and don’t forget reading an essay or more in your field of study
While reading this essays, try to take a point or two from this people, read the opinion they have, how they present their points how to dissect problems and how they try to convince you doing this will mold you in one way or the other.
2. Have A Plan
Yeah! ‘He who fails to plan plans to fail” it’s as simple as that. If you plan to write an essay on “A” browse each and everything about “A”, understand what A is, how you can do this is by drafting a brief summary of what someone can learn or get from the essay assuming it is ready.
Your aim here is to sell the article to the person, now this summary will look like it is for someone, but it is actually for you. When you have a summary of the post ready, knowing what to write wouldn’t be hard, cause you could draft out what the reader will expect from the essay.
Let’s say this is my summary
On this article, you’ll learn how to write an essay, how to present the essay, how to attract your audience and so many tips to know before writing an essay…..
I have gotten my essay ready already, now on the body of the essay, I’ll take each point in that summary and build an article around it. Do you get? This
summary could come in at the introduction of the essay, if you use it there, you’ve built this kind of anticipation and the person will want to see more.
3. Communicate Using Your Vocabularies
Your words can make and mar you, you know they are individuals who hate reading the long text now this is where vocabulary comes in. You could summarize a collection of words into one word if you practice proper economy of words.
It may seem to you like “Big Words” that’s not true, economize your words by using good words, don’t make it look so brief though but still try to pick proper synonyms to a group of text.
For instance
“He is sometimes a social person and sometimes very reserved, he enjoys staying on his own and this has made him to pick offense easily whenever someone tries to get in his personal space”
Let’s shorten this
“He is an Ambivert and a loner this has made him aggressive whenever someone pries”
We just converted that four-line statement into two. I don’t need to overemphasize this point right?
I have this dictionary on my phone which suggests new words for me daily, with this tip I’ve learned a lot of new words, glancing through your dictionary occasionally will help in the long run.
Synonyms!! O yeah, you need this, if you keep using one word often and you notice it seems like an anthem, I think it’s time you get a synonym. I get my synonyms from Google
E.g “Serious synonym” and google will feed your eyes with synonyms for the word “Serious”
There’s power in prefixes and suffixes. Knowing a good number will help you a lot take for instance ‘ante’
ante means “before, earlier, in front of” you see it used in words like “antecedent, antedate, Antemeridian, anterior”
4. Reference Time
O yeah! During your essay, it is very great if you show reference to many sources or people when you do this your reader will be convinced you know what you doing.
After seeing two or three references, your reader will know that you did your research well. Nothing beats a reference to a very old and hidden fact, what I mean here is telling your reader about a fact that isn’t random something deep and not common
In a section where you reference someone, you could give a very brief context of who this person is, you should say a thing or two of the person views and how they lived I INSIST ON THIS, I ALSO INSIST THAT YOU MAKE THIS SHORT and CONCISE.
Oo! Did I mention this? When you quote someone it is cool for you to counter that quote, take for instance this article
“A famous quote goes,
“don’t judge a book by its cover”
I am here to tell you this, go ahead and judge by its cover, it is the duty of the person(who is the book here) to present a good picture of himself (cover) because “the first impression last longer”
Now, assuming I way to counter that topic further I have given my reader a reason to keep reading, he’ll want to know what you have to say. When you counter famous quotes, your explanation should
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
be very very logical and smart. When you do this, you make your reader know that you don’t follow the bandwagon, that you have reviewed the famous quotes and come to the conclusion it is false, you now prove this by stating your point.
5. Punctuations! Syntax! Manner Of Approach
Your sentences sell you. I did mention a part about VOCABULARIES, well now note, when you use vocabularies don’t make it difficult for your reader and still don’t make it long.
I fancy that you replace words-stuffing with concise vocabularies. You can communicate your message across by using proper syntaxes, this will do you much help in passing your message without sounding like an ‘English professor wannabe’ or like someone trying to stuff words
An essay is normally formal and in a professional manner, so you should live up to expectations, this doesn’t mean you should bore your reader to death. When you go through your essay, do you feel confident in the words you read? If yes great, if No, edit a little.
When you write an essay, you can compel your readers with Active voice rather than passive voice. Passive voice sentences often use more words, can be confusing, and can lead to a mixture of prepositional phrases.
E.g Passive Voice: “The entire house was painted by Tom” Active Voice: ‘Tom painted the entire house’
One is straight to the point, the other isn’t. These tips go a long way as you learn how to write an essay.
6. Stay Real
I feel like I shouldn’t explain this topic, but well all I am saying here is, Be real when you write your essay, your teacher or anybody will easily spot when you are fake so staying real is everything.
7. Every Paragraph Needs A Topic
O yeah! You READ me right. Your topic tells a lot about your essay, topics also plays a role in the paragraphs, you know the topic of this section has said it all. The cool role about “Adding a topic to every paragraph” is this, as you write different paragraphs with different topics, your teacher or reader gets the
The idea behind your essay, he flows with the essay and gets the point your driving in. The topic should look like a summary but not a summary (winks) a catchy topic needs to come before every paragraph.
8. Know Your Reader
Is it your teacher, is he a professor, was she a doctor, what is his rank in society, what award has she gotten and for what. All these are things to have in mind before you write an essay, knowing your reader will do you a lot because
you’ll know what he/she is expecting and you wouldn’t fail. When you write an essay to meet your reader’s expect you may get the impulse of wanting to please them, this isn’t bad, but if you make this your main point, he will definitely realize the fake game and fail you.
  Steps To Write An Essay
Now I’ll tell you the steps to write this killer essay.
1. Title
Trust me, your title is everything, you should make a research before you choose your title, the title of this essay will make your reader want to go further into reading it. Super cool Titles always have a verb and a sentimental word.
Take for instance
True Reasons Why Nigeria Needs A Young Leader Now
Unknown Dangers Of Single-Sex School
Effective Reasons To Start Drinking
Lil Wayne Is Hip-hop Only Saviour
Nothing beats a topic that will appeal to someone’s believes. When you pick a topic make sure you build the article around that topic, let the topic be catchy yes! And let the article be worth it.
2. Introduction
This is a short and concise paragraph, I can call this a low budget TOPIC, you’ve captured the reader’s attention with your dope a*ss topic, now let’s get him on his feet and make them more anxious a little
E.g
The young Nigerians know a lot than the elders this century and stand a chance to face the test of time
Single-Sex School is a menace to society and should be stopped before it destroys our core beliefs and morales
Those who drink have more chance against deadly diseases than you, your doctor lied to you.
2pac and Biggie’s reign was built on over hype and gang wars than word wars.
Okay! Don’t fall for any topic you’ve seen there 😉😉, I may be right I may be wrong all I am doing here is passing a point out.
3. Here Comes The Body
This is the real deal, your introduction and Topic was the hype surrounding this section, it is like an artist hyping his album assuring you that it will be the best ever.
If you have a catchy Intro and Topic then give your reader a dumb body, you have failed. Scan through all the ideas and points you’ve gathered and make catchy topics for them, this topic shouldn’t run away from the main topic but should rather in a way support it.
Every point should be explained in details.
4. Conclusion
Every part of your essay connects but your conclusion, topic and introduction share a special bond. Your introduction and topic were giving the reader a reason to read further, your conclusion should remind the reader of those reasons.
This should be short, your conclusion is the direct opposite of your body, your body entailed a detailed explanation of key points, your conclusion should show how these key points connect.

20 December 2054
Johnna Johnson had only been at work for 5 hours, but time was moving quickly.  After all, she was getting paid to do essentially what she did at home.  That was the beauty of the New Idaho Museum of Oddities—they gave you a comfy seat, some snacks, and they didn’t ask that you do anything but show off your Oddity.
Like many in NIMO, Johnna’s ‘Oddity’ was her weight.  Truthfully, Johnna considered this rather offensive, but the ease of the job made it worth the degrading job description most days.  And at 375 pounds, Johnna was well qualified to ride in the trailer.
Most days, it wasn’t so bad.  Johnna sat down in her seat, watched a Virtual Movie through her Lenses, read a Virtual Book, or browsed the internet.  An entire Virtual World lay just behind her Lenses.  It wasn’t a problem to spend six hours without moving around.  Who liked to move, anyway?
Johnna had always been quite heavy.  She was born in 2024 to John Johnson, a single father in Southern Idaho.  Having grown up on a farm, Johnna had had every opportunity to eat healthy growing up.  John, however, had never enforced this habit, and by the time Johnna learned the health benefits to eating her father’s crops, she was already well addicted to the junk food that was always kept around the house.
Johnna’s father had scrapped together enough money to move to New Idaho in 2030, already sensing that it might be the next big thing, and he brought the 6-year-old Johnna with him into the mountain ring.  He only had enough money to buy a small plot of land in Southern New Idaho.  Though farming was a much more lucrative profession in New Idaho than it was in the rest of the state, the size of John’s land was good for hardly more than subsistence farming with a very small profit on the side.
As a farmer in New Idaho, John was exempt from all taxes, and was therefore able to live comfortably.  Johnna, however, was still heavily bothered by her family’s lack of upward mobility and became obsessed with the rich Lucid Labs children at Sky High.  In her attempts to jumpstart her own social mobility, Johnna went seeking attention wherever she could get it.
During this quest for recognition, Johnna wound up pregnant at 17 by a man who subsequently wanted nothing to do with her.  She was too proud to take child support (a move she later sorely regretted).  The last she had heard, the father had gone to University out of state, and had never returned to New Idaho.  This was probably for the best—she couldn’t imagine him coming into the MoF to see her now.
Johnna kept her pregnancy a secret from her father as long as she could, but after 8 months, and with no way to hide the inevitable physical manifestation of her mistake, she came clean to her father, who immediately expelled her from his house.  He hardly had enough money to take care of Johnna, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to pay for her sin.
Johnna found opportunity to visit her father a couple more times before his death in 2043.  Charlie, her child, was 2.  He would never know his father or his grandfather.  Charlie and his mother were all the family either of them had in the world.
In search of a new family, Johnna stumbled upon FuTech Christian Church.  It was a beautiful opportunity—not only did their message provide her with hope going forward, but she never had to meet any of the congregation in person.  She could appear or disappear as she wished while she took in the messages.  She knew that many of those she saw in service were connected to the local network, but many also came from out of town, interested to see what a FuTech Service from New Idaho looked like.  This provided Johnna with a diverse community who only wished to build her up as she went through her always-difficult time raising Charlie.  They even offered him free enrollment on need-based scholarship to the FuTech Virtual Home School.
Thus, through her drive, her faith, and her gig with NIMO, Johnna had carved out a decent survival for her and her son.
The time was nearing 1400h, and there had been a good bit of traffic.  The New Idaho Mall was still rather busy with last-minute shoppers.  You could tell some of the visitors felt a little bad for staring at fat people, but it had been surprisingly normalized to a large extent in the New Idaho society.
Not everyone, however, was so tactful.  Johnna could sense bad energy as soon as the goateed man in the yellow polo stepped into the trailer.
‘Goddamn, Shelly, truck G is a heavy one indeed!’
‘Ricky, stop.’
‘I’m just saying, I’m just saying.  Look,’ he lowered his voice to a whisper that Johnna could still hear, ‘those two are even eating Oreos—it’s almost like you can see them growing as we speak.’
‘Ricky.’
‘No, really, I wonder if they get a raise in pay if they have a raise in weight.  Don’t you think that would just make sense?’
Johnna got up from her horizontal position and looked at the visitors.  A mistake— when you look into the eyes of a visitor, like staring down a vicious dog, you open yourself up to attack.
‘Hey there!’ Ricky said to Johnna.  ‘How’s the day going?’
Johnna nodded.
‘Do they not let you speak?  You’re human just like me—I can see that even if other people think there are four little men inside you pulling the levers.’
Johnna remained silent.
‘Come on, have a little fun!  Are you having a good day?  Getting paid a good bit?’
Johnna could tell she wasn’t getting out of this without a response.  ‘Yes, it’s been a pretty good day.’
‘There we go.  I knew you could talk.  So hey, then, let me ask you this—you happy doing what you’re doing?  You feel good about this stuff?’
‘Ricky, come on.’  Shelly hit her husband on the thigh.
‘It’s an innocent question,’ Ricky said.  ‘I really want to know.  Is this a good gig?  You like doing this stuff?’
‘Ricky, obviously she doesn’t.  And I’m sure she doesn’t like you talking to her this way, do you?’  Shelly asked Johnna.
‘It’s not obvious, Shelly.  If she didn’t like it, she wouldn’t be doing it.’  Ricky turned back to Johnna.  ‘So do you like it?  Wait, I have a question—were you always this fat, or did you put on the pounds to get the gig?  Can’t be that bad, huh, just sitting here doing nothing but talking to losers like me all day.’  Ricky laughed.  ‘No answer?  Come on!  Do you like it or not?  I won’t judge.  Oh, and follow-up to my last question—cuz Shelly’s gonna hate it, but I really want to know—how did you get that fat?’
‘Rick—We’re leaving.’
‘Come on, wait, give her a minute to answer.  You gonna answer?’
Ricky was looking at Johnna with a smile on his face.  It almost seemed like the man meant well—like he was genuinely curious and truly didn’t care about how rude he was being.
‘It’s not a bad way to make a living,’ Johnna said.
‘Not bad, huh?  Well, I’m glad you like it!’
‘Okay, Ricky?’  said Shelly.  ‘Now can we go?’
‘Wait wait, though—she didn’t answer my last question—how the hell did you get that fat?’
Johnna didn’t want to answer this man’s question—it was downright mean, though the innocent look on his face somehow communicated otherwise.  The question was, at the very least, objectively rude.  But for some reason she felt she owed him an answer.
‘Honestly, just what you would guess,’ Johnna said.  ‘My diet and a sedentary lifestyle.’  He had made her admit it to both him and herself.  She pushed down the emotions bringing tears to her eyes—she had affected an attitude to herself and others of pride in her body, and she did not care to admit that it could have been different.  She preferred to believe she had little to no agency.
‘Aw, damn, I guess I could have guessed that one,’ Ricky said.  ‘Oh, well.  I guess the rest of my questions will wait for another day.  Truck G!  Another one to check off my list, huh, honey?’
‘Alright, Ricky, let’s go.’
The blue-and-yellow-clad couple headed out of the trailer, leaving Johnna to herself for the rest of her shift.  Only an hour.  A six-hour shift altogether.  Based on the traffic today, her pay could very well come out to $75.  That’s 1/4 of rent in the Jungle.  Not so bad for a day’s work.  Three more days like this, and rent was covered, then just some extra money for—for—
Dammit.  That man, Ricky, had opened a wound.  She was now feeling guilty for thinking about the type of food she knew she would spend the extra money on.  But her weight—it wasn’t all just food, was it?  It was her genes, it was the fact that she couldn’t afford a gym, it was the fact that she hardly had any money, and the money she did get went to the survival of herself and Charlie.  And adding on to everything, she just didn’t have the time.
Yeah, screw him.  Johnna stuck out the rest of her shift, received her tips for the day, and walked down 11th street to Slick Business, the coffee shop across from the Government Building on the New Idaho Mall.  She went to the desk and ordered a Large White Chocolate Mocha with whipped cream.  The coffee shop was still busy at this time of day, but she found a spot to sit on the second level.
As she sat down with her coffee, Johnna flipped through different news articles on her Lenses, but her mind kept coming back to that man in the Museum today.  He had asked her if she liked working there, and if she had tried to get fat so she could have that job.  He had a point—if she lost weight, she would no longer be an Oddity.  The Government was basically paying her to stay unhealthy.  And if she was unhealthy, she wouldn’t have the energy to get another job.  When she looked at it that way, it seemed the Government was basically keeping her captive.
Johnna did a quick search for “New Idaho Government” and looked through the most recent news articles—nothing she wanted.  She tried “New Idaho Government Terrible”.  Now she was getting somewhere—certainly someone had thought like her.
One of the first hits caught her eye:  a website for a group called “NIANS”—New Idahoans Against New Slavery”.  She opened the page.  On the left side of her lenses, hovering over the table in front of her, was an image of a black stone fist raised into the air.  On the right side was a sort of manifesto.  She skimmed through it.
NIANS, apparently, was taking a stand against what they believed to be a new form of slavery or indentured servitude—the low-income government work programs, also known as Guaranteed Basic Income.  They argued that most of these jobs were demeaning (something clicked for Johnna when she read that one) or traumatic.  After that was a long paragraph explaining the negative effects of Mineshaft on the population, specifically the youth.
At the very bottom of the page, Johnna saw a call to action:  “NIANS hopes to eradicate poverty through common sense solutions.  We plan to force the New Idaho Government to raise our minimum wage to the federal level, something that should have been done a long time ago.  Additionally, we plan to ask for an increase in wages for those serving in such traumatic and degrading programs as MineShaft and the Museum of Oddities.”
Johnna’s eyes lit up.  she hadn’t known what she was looking for, but this was it—a way out for her and her son—a chance to never work again—NIANS.  As she drained the last of her Mocha, Johnna waved her hand over the link:  “How Can I Volunteer?”
