Insp. Henry Jaycee (Trevor Howard) sat at his desk smoking the end of a cigar he then snuffed out. He looked solemnly at Drake; Ilse was standing to the back of the Inspector, and said “Ilse was my secretary for two years. (I’m alluding to her part in ‘Ghost Squad’.) There wasn’t much room for growth in that job, so she studied to become a police officer. She graduated at the top of her class, much like you did. As you know there isn’t much growth for women on the police force either. They either investigate petty crime or are used on vice.” Ilse moved over to Jaycee and he held her hand. Drake could see this was a ‘father – daughter’ sort of affection. He didn’t know why, but he felt very relieved.
Jaycee continued: “That’s when I suggested to her that she take the private investigator exam, which she also passed with flying colours.”  Ilse smiled, let go of Jaycee’s hand and walked over to Drake. They looked at each other.
“Rigsby was shot in the head at close range with a 22 calibre weapon. I want you two to go to forensics right now.” Jaycee instructed.
Drake and Ilse went down to the forensics lab. The coroner showed them Rigsby’s head wound. The coroner was initially patronising to Ilse but when he realised she wasn’t squeamish he showed her more respect.
After as they walked down the hall they looked at each other, “Well now it’s time to go to control.” Drake said. “Don’t you mean world travel?” Ilse answered. Drake just looked at her.
Emily Crichton (Celia Johnson, sorry there are no scenes between her and TH in this story.) was the only female head of M9, a position she earned. Emily joined in W.W.II and had escaped across the German line with Intel that helped the allies win the war. She was a well-decorated war heroine. Ilse was not allowed into the inner sanctum of the head office. Drake stood nervously and listened as Crichton explained why she wanted Ilse on the case.
“Sit down John you remind me of a tom cat locked in a room.” Drake sat down and listened. “John you must stop feeling guilty because of what happened to Lisa. It wasn’t your fault. She didn’t have the stamina and fortitude for the job and never should have been hired.”
She continued “Ilse Brent took training, even though she doesn’t want to be an operative, I want you to work with her on cases we choose.” She handed Drake a file; it said “Ilse Brent” on front. Drake opened it and read it. “Name: Ilse Thysen Brent. DOB: 14 June 1938, BP: Bombay, India, Mother: Gerda Thysen, Danish national deceased. Father: Mā'īkala Brent, whereabouts unknown, younger sister Gisela Brent: DOB 26 July 1950.
(Ilse again) Hair: Blonde, Eyes: Green, Height: 5’7, Weight: 8 stone, 9lbs, marital status: single, never married. Notes: It is in our opinion that it is a shame Miss Brent does not want to be an operative since she possess much stamina and intelligence. She understands and can programme computers and is a taekwondo champion."
Drake handed the file back to Crichton. “It’s up to you if you want to work with her, but I think you’re a fool if you don’t.” Drake pulled in a deep breath and said, “All right I will.” She was already giving him feelings he couldn’t understand.
