the easiest part of this plot is figuring out what happens to charlotte. her life's not any easier but it is significantly more influential. then three generations later i destroy everything she and her family have been attempting to do for over the course of five or six hundred years while simultaneously cementing its permanence
#they have to get OUT of the equation. to solve it. you see#but would a woman in 1841 actually do that???? the absolute right set of circumstances have to happen for her to make that decision#i want the very last scene to be jen. setting down her scepter. and walking away from the Stone#but i also think it's extremely important that the stone isn't there . like. i think for JEN. who is a bit character#like epilogue ONLY. jen keeps postponing because she wants the stone back first#she knows what she wants to do. believes she has to even. has been convinced of the rightness of her course#but she wants the symbolism to be right she wants this thing to go out the way it went in. she needs to put back what she was given#the same way it was given to her predecessors etc#but in the end of course they don't give it back. so it's an ordinary wooden chair. which is actually more symbolically powerful#and jen is a woman who is Aware Of the Symbolism#the other characters in this book largely aren't. they're aware of how they feel. or they're aware of the politics. or they're aware of los#but they're not thinking about how it looks in the grand scheme of things they're more narrow-minded#and it's tough. trying to justify making a book about an unlikeable unintelligent guy who sucks at everything he does#and be like yeah he deserves to be the protagonist for the first half of the book. it's relevant even#like did not writing as a culture want to move past the whole guy having his quarter or midlife crisis of ennui and that's a novel?#but it's . HISTORICAL ennui. with political consequences. his shittiness shapes the past and the future and all#and like. is it smart to write the book so that he has one or two years of shocking decency before he gives back in to his worse impulses?#am i being too nice to him?#what is this fucking book about and is it worth writing at all#writing tag#q
