Hello!! I read your response to the helplessness ask and realised that I understood the bare minimum of what was said, because I don't know much about politics. While I have my being young (I'm 16) to pay for as an excuse I want to learn more especially what with everything happening in the fandom and in the world. The website you linked was extremely helpful but with politics having so many faces and ways in I'm not sure where to start. (1/2)

hi! thank you for this, and sorry for the delay in answering; I've been thinking about it for a while, trying to crystallize my thoughts. edit: ok I will confess I started answering this and then it sat in my drafts for weeks because I always forget that I have drafts. FML

so: first of all, with you being 16, I'd look into any clubs or organizations at your school that deal in politics: that could be a debate club, a Model UN, Junior States of America (I did this one lol, it presumes you are, in fact, in the US though), mock trial. while not all of these are strictly policy/politics-based, they all at least require and teach some level of research skills that are really helpful in becoming more aware of the current sociopolitical climate, and they can help you weed out logical fallacies/improve your argumentation. so, I’d really recommend getting involved with those organizations.

secondly, start. reading. the news. don’t just read headlines, but read articles—multiple about one topic, from multiple sources. media outlets, while important, all have tangible and legible biases: there are some to outright avoid, but even those that advertise themselves as ‘unbiased’ (side eye) should be checked against other outlets. I am, it must be stated, a massive Teen Vogue stan, and not just because I have friends that work there, lol. they’ve really done amazing work in liberating news reporting from corporate hegemony (as best as a sub-organization of a Conde Nast can) and I align particularly with their value systems and codes of ethics. so that’s a great publication! 

third, and this is something I really want to stress, the US and UK should not be the focus of your sociopolitical learning.  that is Western propagandizing that will narrow your education and your understanding of the world. I get that it’s easy to fall into that as a resident of one of those countries, but it’s really dangerous to ignore how those countries are affected by international policy.  it is so, SO worth it to learn about countries all over the world: their politics are just as valuable, just as worthy of interrogation and analysis, as any western political ‘superpower.’ I learned more about the United States when studying its intervention in Latin America than I did through my History of American Warfare lecture, for sure.

fourth: look into local organizations! do you live in an industry town? there are most likely unions that need organizers and volunteers! are there reproductive health centers that need help? seek them out! is there a mutual aid fund you can contribute to in your immediate area? google it! you never know what you might find right in your town.

fifth: read histories! take history classes! I know this will sound biased given that I studied history at university, but I cannot stress to you enough the value and the knowledge gained from studying different periods of history. and not just meaningless facts and abstract concepts, but skills and transhistorical themes that will help you understand the world today.
