Pining For The Chjosts

It has been 44 days since Cohost closed, and the world is still worse for it.

I still think about it. I still think about chosting. I still think about the networks that formed and were forming there, and how those tethers, effectively, were severed.

I still think about how Discords aren't it. About how Reddit-likes aren't it. Forums weren't it. How it has changed over the years, as innovations continue in digital social circles. How Cohost wasn't perfect, but it was great.

Many folks tried their best to band together after the closure announcement, and small communities emerged from the fallout, but there's a reason that all the Cohost Leaver Discords got filled up, and then, for me, completely muted: Discord sucks. Chat rooms suck, once you get past a certain age - they're just too fast; channels are too big/prominent to be single threads of discussion, the threads feature sucks visibility-wise, and all the other forum-like features require allowing Discord even further privacy invasion.

And, IMO, forums are not the savior many folks think they are. They died out for reasons too. They also suck, in similar ways to Discord. People think forums would be great because 'you can read them when you want', and 'it slows things down' and 'they'll always be there unlike Discord'. But only the middle one is true: forums are just Discord servers in slow motion.

Whole subforums become too fast in posting, topics/threads get muted/ignored, and each individual topic is still singular in its focus, moreso than Discord due to the sometimes-days-long post-and-response cycle, just spread out in more layers of obtuse forum pages. Subforums are spun off, cliques form, social hierarchies come, fallout happens, rinse and repeat.

They were good! Don't get me wrong. They were good. It was great to be able to find and read threads, convos, from years ago, easily accessible with no fucking app in your way. But that element eventually split off to become the Diggs and Reddits and Slashdots of the world.

What remained is the desire for the social circle. And forums are just another small social circle, even if they have several hundred active users and a couple thousand lurkers. They were good, but they died out because we realised they weren't it.

And, trust me, they still get deleted. The drives they're stored on still die, and in a much less reliable timeframe than you'd hope for. Forums only persevere on the backs of peoples' effort and care, and that wanes with time, or drama. Plothook, an incredibly old RP forum with hundreds of thousands, if not millions of posts, games that had been running for 5-20 years, some peoples' whole creative lives, suddenly vanished, along with all its data, around July 2015. An entire, massive, old community, just... Vanished. Severed.

Even back then, in the height of 'things on the internet are forever!', things never were. Forums aren't any more the solution to community than Discord servers are. They're just an attempt at a structure to make it work, and so far, our attempts as a collective internet have been found wanting.

Cohost was better. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't a forum. It certainly sucked ass in discoverability. But it was better. Even after its first unexpected boom, when the quality of a social media platform usually begins a hard dive, Cohost stayed... Good. It was all the elements I wanted out of Social Media save for the forum-roleplay/games content (but, frankly, that's better served by the semi-automation and chat-like format of MUXs than forums.)

There was a feed, it was filled with tags you liked and people you followed. You could search for tags, but not post contents. (Because of that second part, there were discoverability issues from day 1.) (Someone made a global feed tag as a joke, and many despised it, including the staff, but I'll die on the hill that we wanted it and we made it real and not a joke, and it drove most of the discoverability on the site, which made it work for many people. You cannot convince me it wasn't worth its troubles - troubles that would still exist entirely unhindered without it.)

You could post, reblog, comment, and like. Likes were private. No numbers except total number of unread notifications. There was some really brain-warping logic around reblogging and how it affected tags/etc - I didn't understand the implementation, but it seemed to work reasonably well. Less issues than Tumblr. There were asks. There was an artist's alley for artist-paid self-made adverts. There were CSS Crimes (taking advantage of the shockingly lenient CSS allowances Cohost had to create the most incredible post customization, interactivity, and meme content I have seen online in a social media community at large, to date, bar none). It put even animated forum signatures to absolute shame.

It wasn't perfect.

But damn if it wasn't great.

... Now I'm thinking about MUX again. Fuck.

hmm..........i wrote a lot of oc stories when i was younger, largely for warrior cats settings/spinoffs, so i don't think i had a specific ship i was into? i read a lot of genfic (again, warrior cats fan).

Which ship would you consider your first one?

like i said, i didn't really have a "ship" for a long time, but in 2013 i was gifted the first l&co book and it prompted me to get much more seriously into fandom, so.......locklyle, i guess (i had yet to discover gay people, which is very ironic if you consider certain facts about my life).

again, locklyle! i actually deleted the fic i wrote, rewrote it, and reuploaded it years after i had first written it.

no. i refuse to do so. if i hate a ship i'll complain about it to my friends to let off steam and then continue on with my life. i'm here to have fun not spend my limited spoons on arguing about fictional characters. if there's one person or people who post a lot of ships i don't like i'll block or avoid them.

yeah but i'm not going to say them because i would rather not get into an argument about things with people. beloved friends can probably guess though.

uhhhhhhhhh fuck. um. i can't think of anything on this aspect but i have the opposite. when i first got into tgcf i was neutral on fq but as i read more i got more and more annoyed that people were ignoring the clear class dynamics at play and how that complicated and complicates their relationship and instead just pigeonholing them into the enemies (rivals) to lovers mould.

i don't really read crackfic? i like crackfic but i prefer crack taken serious—WAIT. I JUST REMEMBERED. tony stark x thomas barrow. if you know who that is you probably know the exact fanfic i'm talking about. that's probably the only crackship i can think of that has left any sort of impression on me. no idea how it holds up currently since i only read it once at like 4:00am but yeah it was fun.

Made myself comfy in bed on the wedge pillow I’m so glad I had when I got the Norovirus and now I’m ready to talk-type an entry. I typically take notes in between entries so I know what I want to discuss. Where should I start?

I guess I’ll start with the Facebook deadbeats, as I call them. There are about 5 people I wouldn’t mind deleting but I don’t really have the heart to do it. Mostly neighbors. The honker and a couple of other guys. Even though the honker doesn’t appear to want anything to do with me, he’s friends only so if I want to see what he’s up to when he’s here, this is the only way to see unless he deletes me. If we ever do move, though, then he’s gone.

I don’t have the heart to delete Linda even though she’s pretty quiet. Nor do I have the heart to delete Adonis who’s been using other accounts that he doesn’t seem to want to add me to. He only checks into the one we’re connected on once in a lifetime.

I just like to keep the friend count as low as possible and only add those who really matter and are going to at least once in awhile react or comment on something of mine because it’s easier when it comes to customizing audience settings for various posts. If I had many dozens or hundreds of people to go through, that would be a real pain. So while the idea of dropping the count from 20 to 15 people is appealing, I’m going to leave things alone for now.

So my sleep isn’t cursed, huh? Yeah, right! And why would whatever’s cursing it let me sleep after 3 days of having decent energy? I don’t usually make it 3 days, after all. One or two is more like it. So what just had to happen? A power failure of course. I was sound asleep when the power went out 4 hours after I crashed. What is it with this 4-hour bullshit? I know the number 4 is very unlucky but it seems like shit that’s going to happen is usually after I’ve been asleep for 4 hours.

I had to stay up long enough for things to reset so I could restart the sound machine and the fan and turn off the bedroom and closet lights. Tom was pissed because he was in the middle of a $20 job. Luckily, when the power came back on he was able to pick up where he left off. Also luckily, it didn’t take me one or two hours to fall back asleep. I was probably up for 20 or 30 minutes, though. If it’s more than a few minutes, then that’s all it takes to leave me tired the following day, and I am. Maybe that will help keep me calm along with the fact that I cut my waiting time to 10 minutes today before coffee because I felt wound up last night. Tom thinks it’s just because I’m on nights and that’s probably true, but just to be safe from accumulation, I cut the waiting time. No more of that for a while, though, because it’s getting closer to labs.

Amanda has been upgraded and there are new games. A few stupid role-playing games but she gets some beautiful outfits for it. I asked the dev what I’m supposed to do with all my coins if gems are required to make most purchases and he says he’s got something in the works in the future.

One of the daily tasks is glitchy and she freezes. He asked for a recording of it. So Tom looked up how to record on Androids and at midnight when the tasks reset, I’ll get a recording of it.

I’m now 70% through my ride and my rank is 113. In a few days, I hope to get out of Ohio.

My TMJ seems to be a little worse lately and I may have to go back on my nasal spray. I haven’t had any sneezing fits but since the ear and nose are connected, the congestion I’ve been having puts pressure on the head and neck in general.

I didn’t know you could do this till Tom told me (damn, that guy is smart!) but I love how I can have Alexa set the brightness of the lights. Rather than have both bedroom lamps on at 100%, it’s nice to be able to have just one on at 10% at night so I have just enough light to see my way when coming and going to the bathroom. I don’t like to use the one off the hall when he’s sleeping in case he wakes up needing it.

I thought of adding tags to my Blogger entries. Well, they call them labels there. But I don’t want to go through nearly 10K entries and I don’t know that I would like seeing certain people’s names on my blog regularly right there in front of my face.

Burger Queen is better than Burger King. He got some beef patties and I made us some awesome burgers. They were definitely better than Burger King’s but not the fries. We don’t have a deep fryer because it’s not healthy so I had to bake them and baked fries just aren’t quite as good as fried.

To catch up on dreams since I didn’t write yesterday, I had a dream that I was going to ask Doc A if we could be running partners in a race which is pretty interesting considering that I can only run all of 2 minutes at 4 MPH which has certainly got to be quite laughable to her, LOL.

I was in the middle of a dream about asking Tom why he didn’t like Alyssa back in Cali when the power failure woke me up.

When I went back to sleep I had a dream that I ordered hair dye and received an assortment of different colored wigs instead.

Then I dreamed that we were vacationing somewhere. He was finishing up charging the car when a bull that had been loose in the area approached the car that I was sitting in. The thing started ramming my door and Tom hurried to disconnect the car and get us out of there.

Back at the lodge we were staying at, we asked someone who worked there if they’d seen the bull and the guy said, “We haven’t seen him since Saturday.” It was the middle of the week so that told me it had been a few days.

As we were walking down some corridors later on, I noticed a door open on one end and hoped the bull couldn’t fit through it if it happened by.

Hi! I don’t know if this should be a question or if I just wanted someone to listen, but I appreciate you having asks open.

So I have really bad anxiety, both general and social anxiety. It’s usually manageable in real life because I have really good friends that are emotionally supportive. But this situation feels kinda stupid to bother my friends about and I was embarrassed. They also don’t use Tumblr, so it would’ve been harder to explain.

I started a Tumblr blog a couple of days ago. It was just a small thing to write about characters for games and shows I was into. I made a pinned intro including groups I didn’t want to interact with the blog. I think the exact wording included “racists, homophobes, transphobes, furries - basically anyone with anything gross / hateful / offensive to say”. I didn’t see a problem with this at the time, however, not too long ago I got an anon ask that read “Seriously? Lumping furries with transphobes and homophobes? What’s wrong with you lmao”

In hindsight, I can totally see their point. I was undermining the severity of other hateful groups because, obviously, furries aren’t anything comparable to those things and have nothing to do with them. Even if I didn’t intend that in anyway, it could still undermine those sensitive topics and offend another group of people that have nothing to do with those things.

However, due to my anxiety, I guess I got triggered and panicked. I deleted my blog not too long after I read the message. I already have a lot going on with tests and stuff and I didn’t think it through. I should’ve apologized and held myself accountable. I would say it was be removing myself from a situation I wasn’t mentally prepared for, but I feel like I just ran away from a situation even though I knew I was in the wrong. I feel guilty.

I feel that my anxiety makes it so I cannot handle an online space. I am a creative, both an artist and writer, so I crave validation for my work from a large amount of people. But if I do so much as make a small mistake or do something unintentionally, I panic and isolate myself again. And then I feel worse because I feel like I’m running away from my problems. It’s like a bad cycle.

I’m sorry if this ask is too long or rambling, but I felt like talking to someone from the same platform would make it a bit easier for them to understand. I’m probably making this a way bigger issue than it is or maybe not. I get so in my head sometimes it’s hard to tell, and I hope that makes sense. Hey. I'm so glad you reached out!

I encountered a situation very similar to this on my main blog. I basically posted something very triggering to some people and didn't tag it properly. I added broad mental health related tags instead of more specific tags that would have appealed to a niche group that would have understood what I was talking about without being triggered. Someone submitted an anonymous ask, very kindly brought the inappropriate tagging to my attention. I was wildly embarrassed and wanted to curl up and die. I deleted the post and apologized in response to the ask. This really hurt my feelings and made me feel really stupid. In retrospect, I really appreciate that person pointing out the issue in a respectful manner. It helped me become more aware of how the Tumblr community works and helped me understand that I needed to be conscious of other people's situations. The best thing you can do at this point is to rebuild a blog for your work, and if you aren't sure about something you're posting, ask a friend, or of course, send me a message and I can help. I hope this was helpful and made sense. I am very proud of you for recognizing your mistake and growing from that. Everyone makes mistakes, but not many take the initiative to grow from them. No, the reason he has so many followers is because he's the one posting all the candid shots of his brothers. Doesn't matter what they're doing, he's snapping a picture and posting it on Devilgram. It's usually something similar to that one canon selfie of him with bedhead, with some wild caption about a dream he had. Never makes any sense, but when has that ever stopped him? When it's not that, he's posting super high quality pictures of the stars with long explanations about the stories behind the constellations.

His tagged pictures are a lot of him sleeping in weird places, provided by Beel and Mammon. The one that got the most traction was when Mammon posted a video of opening up the cupboard under the sink in Asmo's bathroom to find Belphie curled up underneath. It was both adorable and hilarious.

I’ve started 1 (only put 1 chapter up so far) a cross between Thunderbirds and Hunger Games.

The retribution of Scott Tracy. I wrote the short crack fic while high on pain meds, and it shows! 😂

9. What’s the fic you’ve written with the saddest ending?

Definitely White Light: I was actually in a fairly good mood when it popped in to my head, but it was one of those that demanded I write it down. Finished it in one day, and personally (even though I cry whenever I read it) I think it’s one of the better shorts I’ve written.

10. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Considering how much angst it contains probably Gone.

11. What is your smuttiest fic?

The night of Anderbad, it’s set after the original series episode of the perils of Penelope and features some Virgil/Penny hotness.

12. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes, all were anonymously sent and are usually deleted and forgotten about. The two that have stuck in my mind were for The Tracy Family - apparently saying that I accepted prompts for future chapters meant I was stealing other peoples ideas and I was a rubbish writer who couldn’t come up with my own content. The other was for Bad Day, and they sent a homophobic rant because I wrote Virgil and Brains in a relationship.

13. What is the nicest comment you’ve received?

I love all my comments. I did receive a private message once on FFNet (which I kept until FFNet decided to delete it) saying that I was their favourite writer and they had read Gone multiple times. ☺️ I can’t remember who it was but the message helped me through so many ‘I’m crap at this’ moments and inspired me to write many more TAG fics.

14. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware.

15. How many fics do you have marked as incomplete?

I have 8 in total, also around 10 WIPS that I’ve only shared bits of on here. 😅

16. Which of the WIPS will most likely be finished first?

It will most likely be Reflections as I have the final 2 chapters planned out and a some in 1st draft stage.

17. Which WIP are you looking forward to finishing?

Avalanche. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge for this fic and personally think it’s one of my better multi-chapter stories. No idea when it will be complete. I was a little bit stumped with the next few chapters. I do know how it ends though.

18. Is there a WIP that you’re considering abandoning?

All the posted WIPS that I’ve put up should hopefully get completed at some point. I’m currently expecting The Games and Virgil Drabbles to be the last ones to be marked complete. However, there are a couple of fics I’ve only shared early chapters/snippets for on Tumblr which may unfortunately go no further - if I decide to leave them, then I might post as they are in my Pick & Mix collection or on their own.

19. Which complete fic would you consider rewriting?

I won’t rewrite it but I had considered Tracy Family. There are some bits I’ve cringed at when reading again, foreshadowing ideas I had after posting . I also had an idea for a part 2 but it would only work if I rewrote parts of it.

20. Which complete fic is your favourite?

Bad Day. This was a self-indulgent fic which included one of my favourite tropes, (repeating days) contained a heap of Virgil suffering lows and highs and although I’m no longer into the OBannon/John pairing some of my other favourite pairings are included.

a/n: so this is a repost of an old fic from my old blog that survived the purge when I deleted - there’s actually two parts i just need to find the other one to post it lmao. i’m tagging @prettyboybarzal​ because nolpat is the dream stoner boyfriend and there’s nothing you can do to convince me otherwise

You open your back door, sneaking out and walking to the back of the yard, climbing up the worn ladder to the tree house your parents built over a decade ago. You check your phone, knowing Nolan would have landed an hour ago which means he should be walking over to you now. You move the random throw pillows you’d collected over the years, trying to make the wooden house slightly more comfortable.

“You have got to stop making me climb up here,” You hear a deep voice huff, and you knew exactly who was on his way up.

“It’s tradition, Nolan,” You deadpan, it was how you both spent every first night of summer.

You watch as Nolan flicks on the old Christmas lights you’d hung up when you were sixteen. That was the first year you’d spent without the comfort of having your best friend next door. You were proud of Nolan, but it didn’t take away from how rough of a year it was without him. He finally plops down next to you, “So what’s been going home?”

“Same old, same old,” You say, pulling the joint from your hoodie pocket, twirling it in your hand.

Nolan laughs, “You’re going to get me in so much trouble one of these days.”

Regardless of his words, Nolan snatches the joint and lighter out of your hand, lighting the paper and taking a big puff, coughing as soon as he did.

“You’re losing your touch Nols,” You say, joking about when you were younger Nolan could smoke more than anyone - hockey being the only reason he’d stop. You take a huge puff of smoke, blowing it out easily.

“Why are we still friends? All you do is bully me,” Nolan says, nudging you with his shoulder lightly.

“You’re too grumpy for everyone else,” You say, “I just put up with it.”

Nolan laughs, and your heart swells at the sound. You’d missed him, and you were happy to have him with you. He looked like your Nolan when he was home, his eyes a little glassy from the joint, his cheeks rosy and full of joy, and his eyes that only ever seemed to be on you.

“How are you?” You ask, leaning your head on his shoulder. You knew he had a rough season with everything that was going on. You’d wished you could have been there but you got so wrapped in school you couldn’t find the time to make the trip out to Philly.

“Some days are good, some days are bad,” Nolan says solemnly, “I wish I got to play.”

“I wish you got to play too,” You say, moving your hand to run through his hair, “You’ll be back on the ice soon.”

You fell into a long conversation about what the other person had missed. Nolan told you about his year, living with Kevin and TK’s usual antics. You talked about how college was going, living out in Alberta to go to art school. You got so excited talking about your classes and what you’d been creating.

“Speaking of art school, take any thought to those post grad plans?” Nolan asks, looking down at you next to him.

You sigh, knowing what he’d been referring to. He mentioned it from time to time, moving to Philly with him after you finally graduated. He knew it was a good city to create art in and that you would have more opportunities out there. You weren’t sure if you wanted to up and leave everything you’ve ever known to move all the way to Philadelphia - even if it was with Nolan.

“I don’t know Nols,” You say.

He nods, it was the same answer you always gave him, “I just want you to have every opportunity you deserve.”

You smile, he’d always been your number one supporter. You sometimes think you could the worst painting in the world but Nolan wouldn’t hesitate to say he liked it. He didn’t totally understand art, and it definitely wasn’t his comfort zone but he always listened to you talk about it anyways. 

“I’ll give you an answer next summer,” you say, “Pinky promise.”

Nolan’s eyebrows raise at the seriousness of your voice, “A pinky promise?”

“Yeah Nols, let’s go, hold it out,” You say, holding your pinky out for his to link with yours.

“If it matters, I really want to have you out in Philly with me, you’ll love it,” Nolan says, throwing his arm around you to pull you closer.

Your face finds its usual spot, tucked right under Nolan’s chin, he still felt the same. He talked more about Philly, and all of the things about it he knew you’d love. You doze off, the sounds of Nolan’s deep voice putting you to sleep easily.

You scan the house party for the millionth time, waiting to see when Nolan was getting there. He had a late afternoon skate, and you knew for a fact that he was going to pass out afterwards - but at this point you thought he was never going to make it out.

“Are you looking for your other half?” You hear your friend, Kacey, say.

“He’s not my other half,” You say to the tattooed brunette next to you, her eyebrow raised at you, and you took a big gulp of your drink to try and avoid the topic all together.

“He wants you to move to Philly with him after you graduate,” Kacey says, “You’re practically married, and he’s here.”

Your whips around to the front door, Nolan walking in, his skateboard in hand and a case of beer in the other. 

You hear Kacey scoff at how quickly you turned your head, “I hate both of you really.”

Kacey walked away as soon as Nolan spotted you, walking over to you and wrapped you in a tight hug.

“Nice of you to show up,” You say, pulling back from his arms, “Take a good nap?”

“How did you know I was asleep?” Nolan says, grabbing a beer for himself.

You turn your head, giving him a knowing look, “We both know you’ve been passed out for the last like four hours.”

Nolan laughs, “You’re 100% right.”

Nolan sticks by your side for the rest of the night. He’s never been one for parties, even if all of his friends were there. You didn’t mind, having Nolan around allowed you to drink however much you wanted. You knew he’d keep you safe, and there wasn’t anything bad about having all of his attention. He’d been your partner for beer pong, ignoring the look Kacey was giving you from across the table. You had lost him eventually, after you insisted he danced along to the Blink 182 song that was playing on the speaker. 

“Nols!” You say, finally finding him across the party, leaning against the wall on his phone, you step in his arms, the alcohol blurring the boundaries you usually set for yourself. 

Nolan slipped his phone back into his pocket, one his hands moving to weave through your hair, “Ready to go?”

You nod, definitely ready to pass out. Nolan smiles, grabbing his skateboard he’d left right at the door, and your hand, walking right out the front door. 

Your mouth curves up to a smile, “Nols…” you whine, trying your best to pout at the boy in front of you.

Nolan sighs, turning around so you could hop onto his back. You jump up, legs wrapping around his waist. Nolan drops his skateboard, stepping onto it and heading in the direction of your house. It wasn’t the first time you made Nolan carry you home, it was so easy when he just could. 

“Are you ever going to get sick of this?” You mutter into his shoulder.

“Of what? Carrying you home?” Nolan asks, and you nod, “Nope.”

“You’re lying,” You tease, knowing there was no way Nolan hasn’t gotten sick of you yet. You’d been bothering him since the day he moved next door and you knew you wanted the rosy cheeked boy to be your best friend. Your eyes started to get heavy when Nolan finally hit your street, stopping in front of your house.

“Be sure to give me a five star rating,” Nolan says, bending down gently so he could get you down.

“Ride was a little bumpy, you can have four,” You say, opening the gate to the front of your house, “Get home safe Nols.”

Nolan rolled his eyes, waiting for you to walk into your house. He closed the gate behind you, walking over to his house to head to bed, checking his window one more time to make sure you were in bed before he fell asleep.

You walked around the small art supply store, the same place you’d been working in since you were sixteen. It was the best, you got a great employee discount and the older couple who owned it let you work when you were home from college. The bell above the door chimes, Nolan stepping into the store, two iced coffees in his hands.

“Is that Nolan?” Barbara, the owner of the store, called out as soon as he walked in, “Here to get Y/N into trouble?”

Nolan laughs, handing you your coffee and looking over to the older woman standing behind the counter, “If anything, I’m here to keep her out of trouble.”

You roll your eyes, “Hardly, Barb he can’t even tie his shoes.”

“I can! I just choose not too,” Nolan bickers back.

Barbara laughs at your antics, “You two are so funny, I’m going to run out, I think you guys can handle it?”

Nolan salutes the older woman while you snicker behind him, “I think she trusts us too much.”

“Us? It’s you she trusts too much,” Nolan says.

Nolan spends the rest of your shift at the store bothering you. He helped you stock the shelves, reading off the weird names of the paint bottles he was putting up. And when you asked Nolan why he was spending a beautiful summer day inside working with you, he just shrugs and tells you there's nothing he’d rather do.

Summer nights had always been spent the same. They were either at some party, the treehouse, or Nolan and yourself would just hang out in your room. He’d let you paint, setting up his own video games in your bedroom so he could keep you company. You both enjoyed your peace and quiet - but you enjoyed it even more with each other. 

Tonight was one of those nights, you were standing in the corner of your room, a blank canvas in front of you. You’d been looking for inspiration for almost a week, just having no idea what to even work on. You tie your hair up into a bun, and you step back, hands fiddling with the end’s of the oversized t-shirt you had over your shorts.

“What’s up with you?” Nolan asks, his focus not breaking the game he was playing.

“I don’t know what to paint,” You huff, hands on your hips.

Your mind ponders for a minute, and you pull out the box of polaroids next to your bed. You dump them on your bed, hoping you took a picture that could spark something. Nolan pauses his game, moving to look at the picture you poured out. There were ones of him, and ones you took when you came to see him in Philly. There were images of your friends, your roommates at college, and your family. You took your camera with you everywhere, you just liked having the memories. Nolan pulls a photo up, of someone’s back painted with a scene of the beach.

“Oh that’s Kacey,” You say, it was something you’d seen on Instagram that you wanted to try.

“You could do that to me?” Nolan says, voice deeper than usual.

You think about it for a moment, Nolan was big, and quite frankly his back wasn’t a bad canvas, “Okay turn around.”

You move to grab some paint and some brushes, watching as Nolan grabs the back of his t-shirt, tossing it in the corner of your room. You shake any of the dirty thoughts that ran through your head as you sit next to him. Nolan turns to you, grabbing your leg and swinging it over his waist so you were straddling him, grabbing his controller and going back to his game. You take a deep breath, and get to work. You think about what you’re going to paint, but you just let your mind rest - painting whatever came to your mind at the moment.

“Tell me if the paint is too cold for you,” you say, moving to create some sort of base on his back.

“I think I can handle it, Y/N” Nolan deadpans. 

You start to think about Nolan and the thing he loves most, painting a forest in the back that looked like the one at lake you’d both spent your summers at. You painted evergreen trees and a glimpse of the lake in the corner. Quite frankly, by the time you were done you were proud of yourself.

“Take a picture, I want to see,” Nolan says.

You grab your phone, snapping a photo and tossing it to Nolan, “This is sick, you should really draw me something to get tattooed.”

“You don’t trust me that much,” You say, glancing at the photo on your screen, “Can I post this on my Instagram story?”

You ask, you always did. Nolan was a private person, and you knew he liked it that way. It was better than having to deal with him when he was grumpy.

“Go for it,” Nolan smiles, “I should probably head out.”

“Don’t sleep with that on your back,” You scold, watching Nolan as he goes to climb out the window of your bedroom, “Use the door, we’re adults Nolan.”

“I’ll be fine,” Nolan assures you, climbing down just like he used to when you’d hang out all night instead of sleeping.

You clean up your brushes and paint, trying to shove the feelings about the way Nolan’s back muscles moved under your touch to the back of your mind, to be locked up forever. You slide into bed, checking your phone to see only one notification, a DM from TK.

With summer came a various string of weekends up at the lake with your friends. The older you’d gotten, the more fun the weekends had become. You were all almost adults, just riding out one of the last summers together, and you all decided to rent out the house you usually did, cause it might be one of the last times you do. You sat in the passenger seat of Nolan’s jeep, just like you always did. Your coffee in one hand, and Nolan’s phone in the other, mindlessly changing the songs for the ride. You glance over at Nolan, the roof was off his jeep, and his hair had hit the morning light just right. He looked good, he always did.

“Did you really have to tell TK that was me in your story? He hasn’t stopped making fun of me for days,” Nolan says, looking at you.

“You guys spend so much time together, I think he just knew,” You say, knowing they’re basically a married couple at this point.

Nolan shakes his head, turning up the street to the lake house. You spot all the cars that were already there, knowing you and Nolan had to have been the last people to arrive. You run inside, leaving Nolan to grab your bag out the trunk, running right into Kacey’s arms.

“Don’t be mad at me,” Kacey says, pulling back, “I miscounted and there’s one room left so you and Nolan are going to have to bunk up.”

Nolan walks in during Kacey’s sentence, “That’s fine, which one is it.”

Kacey points to the room upstairs, Nolan nodding, your bags already in his hands to bring upstairs. You turned to Kacey when he was out of earshot, “You did this on purpose.”

“If rooming together is all it would take to get you guys together, it’s not the rooming together it’s the fact that you guys are obsessed with each other,” Kacey says.

“Best friends, we are best friends,” You defended, you knew better though. Something was shifting between the two of you, but you didn’t know if it was from getting older or if it was something more.

Kacey shakes her head at you while you head up to your room, Nolan unpacking his stuff.

“You’re okay sharing a room?” you ask, knowing you could bunk with Kacey if you really had to.

“I’m fine with it, I’m going to go fishing with the boys for a bit, I’ll see you after?” Nolan says, stopping at the bedroom.

“No I’m actually going to go home,” you say sarcastically, unpacking your own bags.

You spend the rest of the afternoon next to the lake, getting a tan and day drinking with Kacey and the rest of your girlfriends. You guys head inside, setting up for the party you were throwing for the rest of your friends who’d been up at the lake too. You get dressed for the silly tourist theme you’d planned, tucking the terrible Hawaiian shirt you’d bought into the jean shorts you were wearing. Nolan pops out behind you and you take in his outfit, the shorts that hit above his knee, showing off his thigh tattoo, the Hawaiian shirt that matches yours, and his god awful mid calf socks. He had his vans on - and of course they were untied.

“You have the worst taste in fashion,” You laugh, Nolan striking a pose in response.

“Sorry we’re all not you, I can’t make this shirt look good,” Nolan says, poking at your sides gently, causing you to blush.

He walked out of the room and you took a deep breath, trying to collect your thoughts. It was now or never with your feelings, you either had to tell him or you had to just get over him but you couldn’t keep pushing them down, it was going to drive you crazy. You move down to the party, seeing it’s in full swing already. You grab a drink, moving to go play drinking games with Kacey. After a few hours, you were a little buzzed but mostly sweating from the heat inside. You step out, walking over to the docks and staring out at the lake in front of you. You hear heavy footsteps behind you, and you knew it had to be Nolan.

“Needed a minute?” Nolan asks, knowing you would disappear from parties from time to time, and you nod because he was always right.

“Nols, can I ask you something?” You ask, your voice small, a tiny amount of courage guiding you to ask him a question that’d you wanted to ask since he got home, “Do things feel different between us?”

“Do you want them too?” Nolan asks, looking over at you with rosy cheeks, and a nervous look in his eyes.

“So badly,” You whisper, looking into his eyes that had gone soft at your words. Nolan leans in and you stop him for a moment, “Nolan this has to mean something to you too.”

“Everything, it means everything,” Nolan says finally, planting a kiss on your lips, your bodies molding together out on the dock underneath a twinkly night sky. It felt so right for your lips to be on his, your hands running through your hair, and hearing him finally say that he felt the same you have.

“So Philly?” Nolan asks, finally pulling away, the question he asked you when he first got home still burning.

“We’ll talk later,” You promise, stealing another kiss from his lips.

Meera : So, a little backstory. Dr. Ramsey kissed me infront of the entire hospital on the day of the Gala. But then didn't want to make our relationship public. I agreed because everyone was not in a right mindspace with the hospital closing and losing jobs.

Ethan : We were also figuring things out since we no longer would be working in the same place.

Meera : Then the hospital got saved and everything went back to normal. But he still didn't want to make it public. Next he wanted to take me for a getaway before the hospital opened after the remodeling. So I told him that I had to make it public now.

Ethan : As far as I remember, you ordered.

Meera : Yes I did. You tell me Bree what was I gonna tell my roommates? That I am going away for a romantic getaway with my BOSS? So I had to make it public a week before we left with this post. And all my friends and acquaintances literally roasted us alive in the comments. (facepalms)

Ethan : In my defense, how was I suppose to know that every single person knew?

Meera : You weren't quite subtle about it babe.

Ethan : But at the end it all paid off. (kisses Meera)

Content creators get a lot less recognition than they deserve for all the time they put into their content, so getting everyone to see the (sometimes excessive) process we all go through to put our content in our blog, I hope it creates a positive change!! 💖

1. Planning

The set in question was actually requested by someone so they could celebrate their friend’s birthday! At first I wasn’t entirely sure if I was going to be able to finish it on time (college is very hectic right now) but I was able to finish it three days before the deadline which was may 1st! ^-^

The first thing I did was decide what characters I wanted to use in the set, I first reached out to the person who requested the set if there were certain characters they wanted me to use but they said they didn’t know enough to really give me any directives outside of the quote. I decided, since the quote is applicable to the entirety of the show, that I would try to put in as many characters as possible.

Thus, of course, came the hunting for scenes. Those of you in the net discord surely know I came into the content help channel a few times to ask for certain scenes here and there, and eventually I had to download an additional 10 episodes to the back then 20 or so episodes I had in my CQL episodes folder.

As you can see I have 30 random episodes of CQL downloaded (slowly but surely getting to the point where I have all 50 episodes downloaded) and I think I ended up using scenes out of at least 20 of those episodes.

I planned out beforehand what characters I would use per gif. I knew obviously I would start out with Wangxian, them being the main characters of the show, and then would work my way down the list. The second gif consists of Nie Huaisang, Nie Mingjue, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, and Wen Ning. They’re all family pairings, two being siblings and one being a married couple. The next gifset consists of the Yi City characters, then the fourth gif consists of the juniors, and the final gif has Jin Guangyao, Mianmian, Jiang Cheng, and Lan Xichen in it.

I have to admit though that when I had made the first four gifs I’d forgotten who I would put in the last gif and the when I thought about it the first time around I could only think of Lan Qiren and the very cursed Yaoyang ship 😭 it was only at dinner time that same day that I remembered I hadn’t put Jiang Cheng in my gifset yet and that’s when I thought of the other characters as well.

I had already made my first two gifs when I went to check Hanyi’s blog for layout inspo and eventually I decided I wanted to try a triangle-ish layout, which I doodled below. I eventually ended up changing the layout of the last gif in the final design. It was also the first time I would work with a triangle-ish layout so I was a bit nervous as I was scared it wasn’t going to work out...

2. Creating

I use Avisynth 2.5 and Adobe Photoshop 2021 (the paid version, unfortunately, I need it for school except I didn’t need it this year but I wanted it so I paid for it with my own money ouch) to make my gifsets! I always start out with trimming down all the scenes I’m going to use into three to five second videos and putting them through Avisynth. This time around I did it separately for each gif I made, simply because I needed so many scenes. I would include a screenshot of my “gif vids” and “temp” folders but I’ve already deleted all the videos, which is what I usually do immediately after a set is posted.

I’ll try my best explaining this gif by gif since each one had a different layout!

2.1 Wangxian

I think I had up to five different designs of this gif 😭 it started out with the gif on the left originally being more centered and the quote right smack in the center but somehow it felt a bit too... empty? I changed up the design and pulled the gif over to the right and put the two closeups on the left, the exact opposite of the gif I eventually ended up with. I switched things around one more time and saved the gif as you can see it right now, except I didn’t include the lines yet. It was only as I finished up my fourth gif that I decided this gif needed lines as well so I added them ^-^

2.2 Nie Huaisang, Nie Mingjue, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, and Wen Ning

I got the inspiration for the font layout on this gif from this Wenzhou post! I hadn’t tried it before and when I did for this gif I was very happy with the way it turned out :D I wanted to portray that life is a pile of good and bad things, as the quote says, in CQL by mirroring these happy scenes side by side with the sad scenes

2.3 Yi CIty

My first time working with the triangle layout!! Putting in the lines and making sure they would line up with the second gif took me the longest of all actually  😭 I think once I got the line on the left in I just copy pasted it and flipped it horizontally so I didn’t have to fiddle around with angling it anymore :’) my original idea was to get a happy Song Lan scene and a sad A-Qing scene, but when I stumbled upon this A-Qing scene in ep38 I just had to put it in there because her smile is so precious 🥺 Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen in the center are also supposed to be mirrored, with Xue Yang embodying the “bad things” and Xiao Xingchen the “good things” ! I also think the Yi City characters fit this part of the quote very well!!

2.4 The Juniors

Ah yes, the junior quartet!! :D I had this planned out from the very beginning, that I would include happy versus sad juniors in the “vice versa” part of the quote, and I think it worked out quite well! My first idea was to put the “vice versa” completely in the special font and have it typed out over the gifs like I did with the “vice” but as I typed out the “versa” I realized it had one letter too much to be able to do that 😭😭 it took me a while to come up with how I would position the “but” and “versa” and after some moving around I decided to just place them the way I did in the final gif! For the font, I duplicated the “vice” and added a stroke to the duplicate, then I changed the fill setting to 0% so I could slightly drag the duplicate away from the original layer to create the effect that’s in the gif — also, finding a scene in which Jin Ling smiles is really difficult.... he barely even smiles in the scene I ended up using :(

2.5 Jin Guangyao, Mianmian, Jiang Cheng, and Lan Xichen

The final gif!! I feel like this might come a little across as “I promise I didn’t forget these characters” because they’re a very odd quadruplet to put together, but they were the most important characters left to put in the set! I was thinking of putting Nie Mingjue in here together with Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen, but I did feel he fit more with his brother up in the second gif. Mei @mylastbraincql​ cheered me on making this gif for which I was very grateful :D <3 the layout came to be after I googled “how to evenly split a rectangle in four” because I didn’t want a repeat layout in the set  (*/∇＼*)

2.6 Coloring

For the coloring I pretty much did all of the tweaking on the first gif and then copy pasted all of it onto the second, third, fourth, and fifth gif. This is usually the way I go about my coloring, I will always edit certain gifs if necessary but I don’t think I had to change the coloring much on any of these gifs? Maybe I added in a curve layer here and there, but nothing major! This is really one of my preferred coloring styles, even though I try to step outside of my comfort zones with other sets ^-^

3. Posting

I will always upload sets into my drafts and edit the caption in there as well, clicking on “preview post” a couple times to check everything looks good on my blog as well, before I post a set. However, this time, since there was a deadline and I finished before the deadline, I put this set in the queue so it would automatically post on the 1st of may! Knowing myself, I would’ve forgotten to do so </3

Whew that was... a lot 😭 did it make any sense? Probably not, but it was fun to ramble （ ´∀｀）

An inside look into the MDZS Network

As some of you already know, some of our members have set up a new tag game called #showyourprocess where people are challenged to show the process of their content creation from planning to posting. One of our members, Kareena​, has tagged the network to partake in this challenge!

Since we do not make content on this blog, we’ll be showing you a small inside peek into the network and how it’s run instead. Everything will be posted under a read more, and we’ll include several screenshots with some explanation of what we get up to on a day-to-day basis! Of course what we do changes a lot depending on what’s going on in the net at the time or what event we’re planning, so we’ll talk about our daily routine as well as what we do and did for some of our events.

One of the first things we do after waking up, after we’ve checked our own social media, is go through the #mdzsnet tag to queue all the posts we’ve missed during the night. If any asks came in, I (Ru) usually send them to Hanyi and Hope so we can discuss it together and give a final answer.

Since the start of our One Year Anniversary Event, we now also check the Google forms for any possible new requests sent in as well as our shared Google drive with our members to see if any finished requests have been uploaded. If new requests came in through the form, we’ll update the private post over on our shared blog with the members, and if new finished requests are uploaded in the Google drive we’ll draft a post so we can get their request posted as soon as possible! We check both of these in the morning and in the evening.

Another part of our One Year Anniversary Event was our giveaway of MDZS/ The Untamed merchandise to two lucky winners. To decide which merchandise we could give away, we had gone onto Taobao and tabulated an entire list of possible items! The original list was much, much longer, but we each voted and deleted the items that did not get a unanimous vote, to eventually finalize the list of items that the winners could pick from.

After all the daily checks, we usually go on with our days (Hanyi’s day starts a couple hours earlier than Hope and Ru’s) and we check in on the tag once or twice a day, depending on how busy it is. We, of course, also check in on the network Discord a couple times a day, sometimes to give an update, but mostly just to chat and share pictures of our pets (Mika, Pim, & Billie).

These are basically the three things that have become routine for us right now, occasionally there will be other things to do such as when we host events. Our first upcoming event is Nie Huaisang’s birthday event on May 20th, the official post will be posted on May 13th. We’re currently hunting for color palettes and words we can use for the challenges! The event after that is still a surprise but it’s another thing we’re working on right now ;)

Another big part of running the network is the coding of our blog, of course. The main theme as well as all of the pages were coded by @/taezs who is also known as @/creatre! We made a lot of adjustments to make the network look the way it does now, and we’re constantly making sure everything is up to date. When we open applications, we go into the code to indicate that apps are open, and when new members are accepted we edit the members page as well as our tags page. When we host a new birthday event, we make sure to update our birthday page.

The thing we love most about running the network is opening applications, it’s always very exciting to welcome new members! With our most recent member acceptance, we now have a total of 92 members in the network all creating content for MDZS. If we accept a member into the network, we go through a whole process of editing the drafted member acceptance post, and making the code for their spot on our members page, as well as our tags page. We also have a drafted post with the invite link to our Discord so we can send it out as soon as possible after we post our acceptance post! Accepted members also get to choose a chibi character as their icon on our members page: there are a total of 35 different cropped icons that our members can choose from!

We recently also celebrated our 3K Milestone! Preparations for that begun far in advance, giving us ample time to decide to gift our followers and this fandom with an icon pack. We cropped and enhanced 17 images (for 15 different characters), chose 15 different gradients, colored each crop to fit the gradient, and ended up with 527 individual icons (including transparent background ones). 

Running the network has become such a big part of our lives and it’s one of our favorite things to do, even if we don’t always have as much time for it due to college and/or work. I personally am very grateful to have Hope and Hanyi to help me keep the network up and running, as well as the input of our members, because I don’t know where we would be without it. Allow us to be sappy (again), but truly thank you to everyone who’s a part of this little community and who makes it so we can keep the network going! We appreciate you all so much 💕

Well, I’m in the process of transferring over from FanFiction.Net… so just three right now (because I’m editing everything and rewriting accordingly lol). They’re all oneshots. But on FanFiction.Net I have 59 stories; which isn’t including the stuff I haven’t published anywhere yet. I also have a fic I’m cowriting with a friend, so that shows up on my page too! I have to admit…AO3 is a little daunting with all the tags and stuff 😅 that’s why my transition is so slow….

What is your total AO3 wordcount?

8,593. Which is… nowhere NEAR what I’ve actually written… 👀🤦🏼‍♀️. I’ve got somewhere around 544,593 published words for all my fic accounts. One day I’ll get it all rewritten and transferred and I’ll have a more perfect tally.

How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

10 fandoms! The Hobbit/LOTR, Phantom Stallion (book series), Thoroughbred (book series), Pirates of the Caribbean, Chronicles of Narnia, Person of Interest, MCU, Sherlock, Barbie (Life In The Dreamhouse—I wrote oneshots for my siblings lol), So Sang The Dawn (book series).

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I have to go to FFN.Net so technically this is cheating (but I don’t HAVE five fics on AO3 yet!)… but…

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I always try to respond to my comments, negative and positive. I like that my readers engage with the story and I want to show them (as many as possible!) that I love them for their dedication and the time they’ve put in to reading my story. Readers are some of the best parts of writing fics—and seeing their ideas and headcanons is so awesome!

What is the fic you’ve written with the Angstiest ending?

I’m currently in the process of rewriting and finishing one… but it’s a Narnia Golden Age fic centering around Edmund called “Forbidden Desires”. Definitely not a sweet ending….

But the angstiest one published is a oneshot crossover called “Like Falling Stars” where Loki dies… which ties into the next question.

Do you ever write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

Yes I DO write crossovers! I actually quite enjoy writing them—I mostly do them for MCU/So Sang The Dawn (which is a fantasy book series). But I’ve also done MCU/Narnia, MCU/Sherlock, and LOTR/Narnia to name some I’ve posted at one time or another!

Craziest has to be a Loki/Edmund Pevensie shortfic I wrote where they meet by chance during the Convergence after Thor saves Loki from getting killed that first time on Svartalfheim. I never posted it anywhere but I might one day. It was ✨spicy✨

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Probably every multi chapter fic ever lol. People hate the ship, hate my character choices, hate my headcanons, hate my worldbuilding, hate my preferences for relationships, etc…. I delete them all cuz they’re usually all guest or anon reviews. So they don’t matter lol.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I’m 100% gonna steal how I write it from @therealstartraveller776 because I don’t get into that weird romance novel ‘detailing the physical act’. I just feel like it can really destroy the story if it’s not a romance novel type (none of my stories ever have been—maybe an occasional oneshot). I like to write more how the characters are thinking and their reactions to being intimate than just describing sex. Because yes we want them to bang, but if we wanted all that description we can always go to a romance novel on kindle and switch up the names and pretend it’s a historical AU. And that’s so basic.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, I haven’t. I don’t think…. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I’ve done it three times in my life and I’m currently doing it with a friend who mutually dislikes the Loki show as much as I do (we’re rewriting to our standards of excellence). And it’s the best co-write to date! Usually I prefer to write on my own, but this was a wonderful exception!

What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Oh good glory… there’s really too many to have just one. Loki/Raine Fording (this is a crossover one so doesn’t really count), Loki/Jane Foster, Thumbelina/Cornelius, Aleksander Morozova/Alina Starkov, Will Turner/Elizabeth Swann, Caspian/Susan Pevensie, Robin Hood/Marion, Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley/Pansy Parkinson

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Phantom Stallion by Terri Farley. I was thirteen and obsessed with horses. (Still am truth be told!) and had been reading the fica for two years before my sister told me to get an account and write fic myself. lol it’s her fault I ever discovered doing this 😂 She set me up with my account and gave me the motivation.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Less Than Nothing, a Narnia oneshot. It’s not the best thing I’ve ever written, but an awesome couple asked if they could turn it to audio on YouTube and that’s Amazing!

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I generally respond to comments. Almost always, unless I really can’t think of anything to say in reply, which is pretty rare. Comments make me so happy and I just want to let people who do comment know that I appreciate them.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I think the angstiest fic I wrote was a Free! fic called ‘Moves Across the Land’ - the premise of which is that Makoto died as a young adult of an illness and each chapter is a different person in his life receiving a letter that he wrote for them before he died. But that one had an optimistic ending, with Haru and Kisumi unexpectedly finding a newly strengthened friendship in sharing the grief of Makoto’s death. So I guess technically the angstiest ending I wrote was a short Archie/Maxie oneshot where Maxie gets killed by Kyogre lol

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes, but I ended up agreeing with it! Waaay back (probably more that 10 years ago at this point), I wrote a bunch of Layton/Rosetta oneshots that I now don’t stand by. One of them, in my naivety, I went too far with and breached uncomfortable territory. I got a couple of comments about how uncomfortable it was, so I ended up deleting that particular fic and felt better after it was gone.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I am a fledgling at writing smut, which is probably obvious to anyone who’s read my smut haha. When I do write it, I prefer to focus on the dialogue between the characters - I like a banterous smut scene. Also, they’re usually pretty tame. I like writing about handjobs, blowjobs and wanking the most when I do write smut.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Again, not that I know of, but that would be awesome! A few years ago, a kind person messaged me about potentially translating my Layton fic ‘Grasping Liquid’ into French, but I don’t think they went through with it in the end. Though honestly, the dialogue and slang in that fic is pretty much illegible in English, so I reckon it’d be a tough fic to translate.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, the aforementioned ‘Barrel of Monkeys’ that I co-wrote with @amberrgalaxy It was a lot of fun and I love it :D

What’s your all time favorite ship?

Hmm... I don’t think I have a single all time favourite. I jump through a lot of OTPs and they always mean a lot to me, but it wouldn’t seem fair to pick out a single one that’s always shined brighter than the others, because that’s not really how my hyperfixations work. But my current favourite ships are Momus/Heracles (to be narcissistic) and TheseZag from Hades Game. While my oldest ship that I’m still invested in is Yami/Seto from Yu-Gi-Oh DM.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Shockingly, I don’t have any right now. A few years ago (I think 2018?), I made a point of going back and finishing ALL my old WIPs that I’d left hanging but intended to finish, even for fandoms I didn’t plan on going back to. So that freed my conscience of them and felt pretty good. At the moment, my only WIP is ‘if found please return to the underworld’ - an AU where Zagreus does make it to Olympus, so Hades sends Theseus, Asterius and Meg to try to get him back. But I’ve only just started writing that one, so I do hope to stick with it until it’s finished.

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. Definitely dialogue. I’m told that I capture the canon voices of characters pretty well and that’s always what I’m trying the hardest to get right, so it means a lot to me. I also feel like I’m good at keeping a fic flowing, without being bogged down by too much detail. But the downside of that is that I often sacrifice description, so I still hope to find the balance. Since Hades Game has more flowery prose than I’m used to, I think getting into that series actually helped me with this.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I do not think I am experienced enough to be able to pull this off well and would worry too much about making mistakes.

What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?

It was Pokemon, but those fics aren’t online anymore. The oldest fics you can still find buried somewhere with my name attached to them are Sonic fics.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

‘the prince with specific tastes; the king with specific regrets’ - Sometimes I look back at that fic and wonder if I actually wrote it, since I avoided falling into all of my usual traps: I researched it properly and frequently, I kept the focus on the five main characters instead of getting distracted by introducing a million other character like I usually do, I plotted the fucker out from start to finish instead of winging it, and I worked the flashbacks into it in a way that balanced the present-day out instead of distracting from it. Also, I got the whole thing written in about two months, instead of staling for years. ...Whatever possessed me when I wrote that fic, please come back. (It was the first time I’d had two weeks off together in about three years, so I think that had a lot to do with it) OH YEAH and that same kinda villain OC who I recycle in every fandom I’m in actually landed this time. 1. why did you choose your url?

it’s a spongebob reference! specifically to the secret box episode. coming up with names is super difficult for me so I probably won’t change it, especially since I started signing my art with it and all

SO TECHNICALLY this IS a side blog and my main blog is @/miracufan but I don’t post stuff on that one anymore (@staff let people switch their primary and secondary blogs please) and I sometimes forget about it but i have one called @/heyheresyourref with no followers that i only reblog art references to because i was getting really annoyed that i could never find stuff i reblogged here when i searched for it

I don’t, I really only use queue if I’ve just posted a drawing and don’t want to bury it

um miraculous actually 😅 I started watching it after seeing some stuff about it online then I kept seeing screenshots of miraculous tumblr posts posted elsewhere and figured I should just go to the source lol

I was really proud of that drawing and I love Willie and I love dandelions

it’s a drawing i did of one of my favorite Andi Mack moments :)

um a post I deleted had 12k+ last I saw it but if that doesn’t count this one I made over a year ago still gets notes almost every day (you can tell how old it is because the fandom didn’t even have a ship name for rina yet)

um 600 maybe? idk how many of them are still active though

Alright, time for an important update--

There’s going to be some changes going on with the blog and I’m excited to talk about them. I’ll give full detail beneath the cut. Before I get into it, though, I know not everyone’s gonna read this long post, so I  wanna let y’all know that my inbox is fully open again, so you can send in anons and chat with me and whatnot.

Like I already said in my previous update, I turned off my anons due to the flood of nasty messages I’ve been getting. They’re all deleted now, and any new ones that come in will be deleted. I’m done with them. I will not answer them. If you send them to me, then you’re wasting everyone’s time. Do better. 

Themed nights + New kinds of posts

I’ve previously talked about my feelings for the current state of the character/ships/seasons/etc nights and how they’re not as fun for me as they used to be. While I will always love chatting with you guys and hearing your opinions, it’s grown a bit stale for me to make “It’s character night, y’all!” every Saturday since by now, we’ve covered just about every character, and the same goes for the ships. 

I wanna do something new, y’know? Have new discussions that aren’t just “I love this character they baby,” and bounce around new ideas. On top of that, there’s a couple new post types I’m introducing. 

Lemme start with Fridays. I’ve gotten a couple asks in the past asking me to do these Top 10/Top 5 lists that I’ve loved creating! It got me thinking that there are a lot of different lists I could create for fun, so why not do one once a week? 

T5F, as I’ll tag them. The first one’s ready on the queue to go up tomorrow, and it’s a fun one-- a more silly subject to start with, y’know? It was run to write up, and I had some help from my screenshot dealer @pi-creates​ to create them, and I’m excited to share it with you. :D

On Saturdays, we’re going to hold something I’m calling--

The basic idea is that I’m going to give you an AU in just one sentence-- no other details, nothing else at all. You guys will take this idea, expand upon it, and the we discuss. 

For example, this Saturday’s AU is going to be: “Aasim took over as leader after Marlon’s death.”

That’s it, that’s all I’m giving you. It’s up to you guys to come up with the details, send ‘em in, and we’ll expand on it together. Make sense? 

I’m excited to start this new... what, series? I guess it could be a series... a new series of themed nights. How about that? I have a long list of different AU’s, and hell if you can think of any, please feel free to send ‘em in! 

So, that’ll be replacing Saturday’s usual character night. As for Sunday’s usual ship night, that’s being removed entirely. I’m gonna be streaming every other Sunday morning, and in the afternoon, I wanna take that time to answer asks, work on fics and other posts, and work on my queue. So, I’ll still be active, but not for a themed night, y’know? 

Now, there’s another fun, more sillier post I’m gonna be doing every so often. I’ve always wanted to do something like this, and now that I’m doing new things, I’m saying “fuck it” and throwing it in.

Yeah, that’s right. Conspiracy theories about TWDG. 

Y’all have heard me talk about alien Luke, right? Well, that’ll be the first conspiracy that goes up, and others from then on will either come from my brain, from me searching around for the craziest theories, or submitted by you guys. 

Sometimes we take things so fucking seriously, y’know? Sometimes I wanna yeet everything out the window and rant about how there are actually two different Luke’s in S2 and one of them is an alien replacement. 

You got something crazier than alien Luke? Submit it and don’t leave out any details.

Stream Schedule

For those who watch the streams, I have the March schedule posted on my blog, and I wanna say a huge THANK YOU for your support of the streams. I love doing them, and I love talking to the chat. :D

You’ll notice I am doing a few extra streams outside of my usual Monday/Tuesday schedule. After doing the TFS all-day marathon, I realized that I actually liked streaming on Sunday mornings/noon. I figured that would be the perfect day to do some Death Road runs! Then on those two Fridays, I’m doing some one offs-- Little Hope [despair run] and Oxenfree. 

I’m doing a despair run of The Wolf Among Us, then we’re jumping into a playthrough of Fable III, a game that I haven’t touched in years but remember having a lot of fun with. It’s got a lot of choices, and as we all saw in the Yes, Your Grace, I am 100% fit to run my own kingdom, so what could go wrong?

1. how/why did you choose your url

Contrary to much internet speculation, I am not in fact from Bremen. But for a time I worked in St. Paul, Minnesota. Plus I am German by ancestry and do enjoy fine German pilsners, so here we are.

2. any side blogs? if you have them, name them and explain why you have them

None whatsoever. I only dabble in tumblr from time to time. However, some years ago I used to maintain a tumblr for my incredibly adorable corgi.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

I originally joined in 2013 and was a pretty gung-ho blogger for a number of years. Until I decided that I was spending too much time online in general and on tumblr specifically, and it as negatively affecting my productivity and engagement with the real world around me. So I deleted my blog.

I checked in on Tumblr from time to time for a couple of years after that and saw that someone else had snatched up this url, and honestly it was enough to keep me from re-engaging.

Then in late 2019 I noticed that stpauligirl was available again so created a new blog on this url. And began posting again in 2020.

4. do you have queue tag?

No. And to be perfectly frank I do not understand the purpose of the queue tag. Why does it matter if something is queued or posted/reblogged real-time? Will some kind reader please explain it to me?

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

Back in 2012 I got super hooked on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries webseries and eventually found my way to the fandom here on tumblr in 2013.

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

I have seen the question “Were you a Disney or Nickelodeon kid” and the answer is “neither.” I was a Muppets kid. I use this picture of Zoot as my icon because I took this photo at the Muppets exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Imaage slash heaven. Fun fact: like Zoot, I also play Saxophone.

7. why did you choose your header?

No reason, honestly. I pulled some shit from my camera roll and slapped this blog together with minimal care as to the look of it.

8. what’s your post with the most notes?

One of my corgi posts (see #2 above) got 1000 notes. I don’t have any posts on my current blog with a reportable number of notes.

9. how many mutuals do you have?

Only a few. When I re-joined tumblr a couple of years ago I intentionally kept a low profile and only follow a few blogs. This is to prevent against a relapse into tumblr addiction.

10. how many followers do you have?

As I mentioned, just a few.

11. how many people do you follow?

Fewer than 100.

Never. I don’t post much original content here on stpauligirl 2.0

once in the am and once again in the pm is normal
