ngl, sometimes i get a little sad that fo3 has kind of faded into obscurity in the fallout rpc. don't get me wrong, i totally get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it seems like it totally gets undersold to people as being inherently "bad" or SO much worse than fnv and fo4, like they're not all buggy, plot-hole riddled disasters with a myriad of gems to pluck for roleplay purposes. (mostly fo4, though, obsidian please make more fallout games.)

fo3 was kind of my childhood, in a way? i used to watch my brother play for HOURS, and it took me years to work up the courage to play such a "scary" game, and it's been my favorite game since i was like ... ten? and yeah it has a lot of flaws, but it has such a captivating atmosphere, interesting karmic choices and a lot of characters that are total diamonds in the rough.

1. What is your favorite punctuation mark?

Ooh! Well, I find em-dashes very useful. Do I know precisely when it’s grammatically correct to use them? No! Does that stop me from using approximately 20 of them per 500 words in every first draft I’ve ever written? Also no!

Side note, I don’t think they’re technically punctuation marks, but I’m a big fan of reference marks, (your asterisks *, your daggers † , your double daggers ‡, triple(!) daggers ⹋, your, er, reference marks ※ ) mostly because there are so many of them, and each one can also tell you a little bit about what kind of information is being referenced, which is so cool! I love how much information can be encoded not just in text but in little things like that!

9.Do you write characters based off of real people or make them up?

Hmm. I don’t think I’ve ever consciously based a character off someone I know, at least not one that ever got any actual development. If anything my characters probably have too much of me in them, but the jury’s still out on whether or not I’m real people.

24.How do you figure out your characters looks, personalities, and speech patterns?

Honestly since 99% of my characters are from video games these days, I’m mostly relying on what the game’s character creator gives me to work with. And since at the time I’m designing them (the very beginning of the game, or earlier --WF being a unique exception) I generally know next to nothing about who they’re going to be or what they’re getting into, I just kinda... go with what looks cool? Games that let you change your appearance mid-game are a blessing.

I probably should put more effort into giving my characters distinguishable speech patterns than I do, it’s not really something I’ve given much thought to in the past. And personality usually just develops as I figure out their backstory and motivation. Most of them tend to lean towards helpful and diplomatic though, because I’m incapable of being mean in video games and I just... don’t enjoy playing/writing people who are assholes.

25.How do you figure out character motivation and backstory?

 I do a lot of asking myself “If my view of the world had been shaped by X experiences and I was in Y situation, how would I respond? How do I think a person would feel here?” That gives me a starting point that I can then elaborate or subvert or build upon. I usually don’t start out with a strong core theme or concept, but as the game/story progresses I look for things about the world/narrative that I find compelling and try to work them into my character. And a lot of it is just working backwards from a mechanical choice I made (making a character a specific class for example, or only using melee weapons in FNV cause I didn’t want to deal with ammo resource management) and finding an in-universe justification for it. Sometimes it’s just....vibes though

Honestly I really only flesh out my characters backstories as much as I need to inform their reactions to their current situation. They all have varying degrees of complexity, from “1,333 word document + detailed headcanons about their culture and hometown” (my D&D Paladin) to “They lived in this place and had a sibling” (my Courier. She lost her memory and wants nothing to do with her past life so I only decided to get into her backstory for some Angst Potential)

It’s all a very fuzzy process and my characters end up changing to various degrees as I go along and learn more about the world they live in and spend time in their heads.

not the initial anon but tbh before I followed you I thought you stanned the legion bc you always sounded p flippant about why others would hate them. like now I understand that a lot of that was bc of yr friends getting harassed, which isn’t cool, at all? but whenever yr posts (divorced of context) came across my dash, there were some that read like they downplayed fans’ issue w rape/misogyny in the game/fandom. OKAY EVERYONE SHUT UP this is a good ask and I need to seriously address this. 

I thought about this now between reading it and going to the kitchen and you are the 2nd person to tell me this anon and I have to admit that you are right. Even when I have the best intentions I sometimes communicate them in a bad way and they don’t come across how I want them. I use Tumblr like a person would use twitter and I chain my posts thinking people will understand the context - I actually assume people know me well enough to know where I stand on the issue and that is a bit egotistical of me to be honest. 

You are right, I am still against the harassment of my friends but I am also not endorsing the Legion nor what they do, obviously as a lgbt woman and a normal person. In fact until I met my friends two years ago I was very much disturbed by the Legion and didn’t even like mentioning it. I am scared by these kind of factions and characters even in video games. I don’t think anyone from my friends does so either, some just like exploring the faction but the way they explore it never praises, enables or excuses the horrible things the Legion does, just sometimes people like writing villains and villainous factions as villains and villainous factions. Not to mention I have a pretty clear moral standing when it comes to writing dark topics too. (since I got harassed for being against writing non-con and such a lot on this blog and previous blogs). And also no one I know really likes the Legion, they joke about it and at it’s expense as most people do, like Vulpes is a furry dog hat etc etc. 

But I feel like I did fuck up big time by not providing context and thinking everyone sees my entire blog laid out and know me the way my friends know me - I didn’t consider what it might seem to strangers. I do feel I have to apologize because It’s my fault for that and I am very sorry. I will at least try and be more mindful about the way I phrase and write my posts in the future - I feel a lot of my point is lost because I am bad at being coherent in what I write and also not being a native english speaker. 

Thank you anon and thank you that person that DM’d me because I see the issue now and you are right, I do need to work on that. But for what it is I never stanned the Legion, I never justified, excused, endorsed anything they did and as a matter of fact I am very much sad that people believe I would overlook misogyny and rape as non issues, but I don’t blame them because it’s my fault it came across as such and I completely take the responsibility for it. I have a lot more posts on my blog talking about misogyny and such in FNV and Fallout 4 than I have jokes about dog hat. For what it’s worth even in my stories the Legion are villains and the Legion is being destroyed, and I believed that a lot of people were okay with exploring the Legion as villains since they love Ulysses (and I do too) and a lot even love Joshua Graham. In fact I have yet to see anyone on my dash and in my following and circles doing all that “flower crown uwu vuwpews inuwta did not wrong” =3= shit

You ever notice that a lot of people want to try and fix Hancock may it be having him drop his Chem addiction or even to somehow reverse him from being a ghoul.I find it intresting that of all the characters I see so many people wanting to try and fix him because it personally seems like he has his shit together.

I do love that in most fallout games stimpacks are just magical heal needles because whenever someone tries to rationalize them it makes them super dangerous and really not something the average person should be able to use.

Okay I’ve never really understood why food in the wasteland has to be shit. Like I get it stuff like bloatfly probably can’t be saved,but people know how to make tasty ass food from some of the grossest ingredients now a days so why wouldn’t at least a few people know how to make good food. Spices have to still exist right?

I say we bring better cuisine to the newer instalments of fallout. Food is such an integral part of culture and the idea that everyone just eats disgusting junk just doesn’t sit well with me.

Am I the only one who gets creeped out by all the vault Tec merch? It’s so weird that of all the things we merchandise is the thing that criticizes capitalism. I’ve never understood the appeal of vault tec merch,give me a kings jacket,ncr flag,wasteland creature figures and plushies over vault tec merch any day. Vault tec is so oddly idolized by the fan base when they are clearly suppose to be the bad guys. I don’t understand it.

I keep meaning to make a life update post for old friends here, but I wanted to wait until it was all good news instead of mixed, but I’m just gonna accept that won’t happen and update people anyway!

tl;dr I’m graduating with a master’s in computer science soon, job hunting sucks, theses suck don’t do grad school, I play a disgusting amount of Overwatch, and my cat is still super fluffy and great

Still together with Austin, and maybe going to visit him after I graduate. ouo  He’s a constant good presence in my life, and it’s really made me realize what healthy relationships are like lmao. Hindsight is 20/20. But yee he humors all my OT3 plotting and I get to listen to him geek out about musicals recently, it’s very cute. C:

I also have a great set of local friends here, although now I’m worried what’ll happen when I move away for a job. And one of them has been studying abroad this semester so I’ve barely seen her. But they’re all A+ people and we like to play board games and I’ve even dabbled in DnD with them.

We had a stray cat in the house for a few months last semester/into winter, but we finally found a foster group willing to take him in and look for a home even though he had FIV and is kinda old. He was definitely going to die if we hadn’t taken him in, even continued vet care and being indoors only couldn’t really cure his upper respiratory infection. My friend/housemate Michelle was pretty sad to see him go, he was kinda hers even though she knew she couldn’t realistically keep a cat right now. ;o;

I waste a lot of time playing games. Overwatch is my coping mechanism for depression, I hit level 600+ recently it’s pretty pathetic. I do some comp in mid plat, and I’ve actually made a nice set of friends to play with as well. One who happens to go to this same school (I guess we started playing together through friends of friends, but those middle links don’t play anymore) and some elsewhere. So I’m actually on Discord a lot for game reasons! And GrayEmbers#1544, happy to play with friends.

Ooh, I also bought Oxygen Not Included (and convinced Austin to) the other week, which is Klei’s new game - the company that did Don’t Starve. It’s in super early alpha so tons of bugs, but I’m excited to see it grow just like I did with Don’t Starve. So much future content, and I already like it as it is.

I’m trying to shift some of my time-wasting activities to drawing and writing instead of Overwatch. Especially when I find I’m just playing and not having fun. Drew a few things recently, and have had Ryker/Veronica/Christine AU fic in the works since February (and post shit regularly on the side blog), and I’ve really been enjoying renewed character activity with Austin’s newer courier and a friend of Silt’s! Nyl/Red Lucy is the real OTP. Also, I’ve almost convinced two irl friends to play FNV, they’re probly sick of hearing me talk about it lmfao. It’ll always have a special place in my heart.

School happens. Somehow I’m going to be allowed to graduate in a few months without contributing anything useful to the world. I feel like the only thing I really learned in grad school was how academia works, so as far as Computer Science goes, I wouldn’t recommend it unless your endgoal is research or academia. Don’t get me wrong, I took some neat classes and read some really cool research, but I’d already learned most of my hard skills from undergrad so. shrugs. My research I’m being paid to do this academic year involves taking technology into hiking or outdoor settings, and I’m focusing especially on the cultural aspects of it. For example, people react very differently to a person reading a book in nature versus looking at a phone screen in nature when in reality that person could be reading an e-book, they have no idea.

Things are kind of rough again mental health wise, but I dug this hole myself by procrastinating on my thesis which I now have to write in 1.5 months, so. I want to die a lot of the time but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. But if anyone is up for ramming me with their car going 60, hmu literally.

Jobs will probably happen?? I don’t have anything lined up yet and my interests pull me in like 10 directions, but I’m looking pretty seriously into UX design stuff and possibly contracting work in tech. Dream job is still to work with virtual reality and/or gesture interfaces, but that didn’t happen in grad school (partially my own fault partially shitty circumstances) so I don’t know if I have the right qualifications.

Can’t wait to move somewhere and have a job with set hours and get more pets and build a new computer because I can.  ;~;  (No idea where yet, I just know I don’t want to go any farther south because summer is the worst.)

My older brother is getting married in November, which’ll be my third wedding of the year lol. And my Dad and stepmom moved back to the states from China! They’re in Baltimore, I’ve gone to see them once already and probably will again on the tail end of a friend’s wedding. Their dog is super cute holy shit.

Okay now that I’ve lost 90% of readers, I also lowkey wanted to mention I had top surgery over winter break, which you might be able to tell from the two selfies above. If you happen to know me irl but hadn’t heard yet, please keep it to yourself. I still identify as female and use female pronouns, but I’m absolutely loving my new chest and so happy that I saved up for it. ;u; If you’re a mutual and wanna ask particulars or about the process or anything, feel free to message me privately.

Fallout 4: mod list

I wanted to do a master list of all the mods I use in case anyone else was interested as well

Nexus Mods:  (these are all usable without CBBE)

white teeth: i know it’s a post apocalyptic world sans dentists, but i got tired of looking at gross yellow teeth.  at least with this mod they’re not AS yellow and gross.

craftable showers & toilets:  gives you more bathroom options, ability to shower or take a bath, and um...  new animations for companions who wish to use the toilet..... (i laughed when i found out they could use the bathroom too), but over all i really like having the different options as well as clean towels and clean bathroom utilities

better Third Rail:  this mod adds more people and variety to a club that’s supposed to be THE hot spot in the Commonwealth

more male hairstyles:  tbh.. i haven’t used this one a lot because i’m still playing my female SoSu, but it deserves an honorable mention

companions go home:  if installed will send your companion back home, Piper to her sister, Nick to Ellie, etc...  if you wanted something lore friendly and you worried about taking the character away from responsibilities and loved ones.

improved shack bridges:  really nice to create walkways and makes it easier to snap pieces together

power conduits & pylon power increase:  increases the radius of the power pylons and conduits so you don’t clutter everything up with 50 pylons and have wires everywhere.

Randomized Diamond City guard outfits // Varied Diamond City Guards:  i lumped these 2 mods together because they make Diamond City more immersive and believable, instead of having clone guards everywhere

Diamond City Expansion:  Adds more houses to DC to make it feel more like a city.  Very lore friendly and when you see it, you’ll ask yourself why Bethesda didn’t do this to begin with.  The modder is still working on it, so some things are inaccessible but I still like it.

Danse dialogue overhaul: tries to fix some of bethesda’s laziness for post-Blind Betrayal Danse.  That way you don’t hear “With the Brotherhood behind us we’ll never fall.”  after being dumped and banished by the BoS.  Also has spliced dialogue for romanced Danse to be called “Hon” or “honey” by SoSu.

Danse GTFO power armor // Console Command instructions:   the mod is really popular and apparently worked for a lot of people, unfortunately it did not work for me, so I included the instructions for just console commanding him out of his damn power armor.

IMMERSIVE TOILET PAPER:  because I’m not a heathen who puts the toilet paper the wrong way ;P

Captain Sparrow Export Rum:   “Why is the rum always gone? Even if your just after a Rum on the rocks This lost bounty is yours for the taking.  One respawning crate of Captain Sparrow Rum can be located on The Wreck of the White Pearl which hit rocks outside of Salem. The boats captain seems to have lost his hat too, maybe you can find it.”  listen.. you get Captain Sparrow’s specific hat, which is very different from the pirate hat or Hancock’s hat in game.  

Journal of the Sole Survivor:  a really neat mod that let’s you role play your SoSu and do journal entries for what your SoSu might be thinking or feeling that day.

Galaxy News Radio (DJ Cerberus):  mix of FO3/FNV/FO4 songs with the modder DJing.  Modder is super nice and quick to reply with any questions, but honestly it’s really nice hearing some of the FNV songs mixed in with FO4 song rotations.

Old World Tunes:  another radio mod with another great mix of Fallout songs and expanded rotation of other oldies.

Sit Anywhere:  a mod that lets you sit down on the ground.  It’s a really popular mod, that unfortunately for me does not work.  However, it may work for you so I included this on the list.

Pip-Boys for Companions:  you got all those extra pip boys in Vault 88 but are unable to give them to your companions.  This mod fixes that.

Shezrie’s Far Harbor Home // Cozy Basement // Marlborough Mansion:   mods that add a player home to the game.  I really like these and I think the modders did a good job.

Bethesda Library Mods:

Cheat Terminal - literal godsend. Don’t leave the Vault without this mod.

Atomic Radio - radio mod.  LISTEN.  I LOVE THIS RADIO MOD SO MUCH.  IT’S THE BEST.  It has FO4 songs interspersed with fully acted old timey commercials, radio serials, and it’s hilarious.  Please subscribe to this mod.

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch:  tries to patch up all the glitches and crap in the game.

Armor & Weapons Keyword Community Resource:  whether downloaded here or in Nexus, this is a really important mod to have. It standardizes things so multiple mods can use this framework and not conflict each other.

Azar’s ponytail hairstyles 2.0:  adds lots of ponytails and long hair options for female SoSu’s

Recluse’s hairstyles:  adds a shitton of hairstyles for female SoSu

Appealing Moles:  adds realistic mole options. honestly wtf was Bethesda thinking

Skip DiMA’s Memory Puzzle:  Praise Jesus Hallelujah Amen.

Dogmeat (Companion & Dogmeat):  mod allows you to have a companion and Dogmeat at the same time.

Danse’s wearable holotags:  mod to let Danse wear his holotags

Brotherhood remain friendly to Danse:  mod so you can have Danse as a companion and you don’t have to fight the BoS

no more floating razorgrain:  this always bugged me, so i’m glad there’s a mod

Nuka Cola Classic:  think FO4′s bottles look dumb and miss the old bottles in FO3 and FNV?  This mod fixes that.

I don’t have favorite OCs because a mother doesn’t choose favorites. I love them all, OCs are always part of you and I just can’t say I love any part of me more than any other.

Tracie is my typical self insert because she is annoying, bubbly and not so smart, but she is kind and good and would ultimately do the right thing but wants to help everyone as much as she can. She however doesn’t really embody every single one of my traits, just my most defining traits. She also embodies my struggle with my identity, the need for me to be what my parents want me to be while I secretly have a completely different set of talents and interests online and struggling to find myself just as she is between being a upper middle class housewife and being a person willing to do whats right and fight for the people that need her. 

Lexi was engineered to be completely opposite of Tracie and she isn’t even my courier. She developed on her own and she is now just like a person and I no longer have any control over her or her actions. While she is different from Tracie, by being more vengeful, mysterious, very very intelligent, she is still very good at heart and kind and she too would want to help as many people as she can, if she can so I guess that’s the only thing they have in common. In fact she is kinder than Tracie and ultimately kinder than me. She was made in sort of anger cause my friend, whose courier she is a companion to actually, has a courier who is exactly what I wanted my courier to be. And I was a little peeved cause I couldn’t play a character that would be an extension of myself, so I just made a character that’s complete opposite, and Lexi turned out quite unique cause I did almost everything I wouldn’t do otherwise. Except the fight legion, help people part. 

Sofia is made with @fraenkysjunk because I wanted a character that will be NCR but will also be down to earth and collected and not overly dramatic. I also wanted a non fighting character, a character who straight up survives the Mojave by being good and charismatic, smart and diplomatic and would rather use her voice to gently persuade than a gun to force. This goes well in line with the issues of the NCR, what they should be and what they are, so she is pretty much what the NCR should’ve been if they were a flawless faction.Oh and also I wanted someone to sing Jessica Rabbit style at the Tops. 

Logan was a character I made that was supposed to be a desert ranger and honestly he went through five or six layers of character changes from design to personality changes to end up the way he is. I just wanted to have a character who seems like an asshole, but has a heart of gold. And I wanted a character who would be thrown into the role of a desert ranger completely at random, being neither legion nor NCR nor part of the original desert rangers, but sort of show and embody what it means to be one of these iconic badass figures and that’s to help people, something the rangers lost under the NCR. Given how I haven’t shared his story, I promise a lot of this rumbling will make sense. 

As for AUs I really like the AU where Tracie is a synth and also the AU where Lexi is the courier. Those are fun. 

I have few other OCs, Samantha, Mia and Amanda (FO4) and Maggie, a self insert-y courier so I can experience all of FNV not through Lexi’s eyes and an unnamed legionary, but they are really early in development so I won’t be talking about them much.
