It was 10 a.m. Not too late! but if someone has a long check list for the day, waking up this late in the morning was obviously not an ideal option. Groaning, you removed the sheets to get ready for a busy Sunday. As much as you didn’t want to tread in that direction, there was only one way out of the room. Keys jingled as you opened the door from inside, mentally thanking Kun for providing you the separate keys for it’d have been impossible to get the little nap that you took after 3a.m.
You were surprised at how door didn’t creak at all when you opened it. Your brows drew together as your eyes darted east and west to find any sign of life but hopefully the door of the other room was closed. You sighed, dragging your feet towards the bathroom.
unconsciously bolting the door, you looked at your reflection in the mirror. Eye bags adorned your deep eyes, cheekbones seeming dull and a bit hollow and all of this has happened in just a week. No matter how comforting the bedding was, the panic had already seeped through your bones when you saw that knife in yuta’s hand. With broken resolve of staying away from them, your anxiety had forced to to call taeyong at midnight, hours after fighting with your thoughts.
“Y/n you need to calm down. I told you already there’s nothing to be afraid of!
“How am I supposed to calm down when he literally threatened me with a knife!” your voice came out in loud whisper.
“He’s just finding a way to control you. I know he might have sounded aggressive but he’s not-
“Aggressive? You are defending that asshole!.... but it shouldn’t be a surprise to me. After all he’s your own kind. I can’t put-
“No y/n. you said yourself he looked drunk! and when I’m telling you you are safe th-
“I don’t think there’s anything to believe. I won’t be surprised if this was just a ploy to kill me in some more satisfactory way.” and you had hung up the phone on him.
After the call, you had realised there were flaws in your accusations towards taeyong but you were not in the wrong here and caring for your own life never counts as overreacting!
Finishing the morning routines, you were about to enter your room to get ready for the day but your feet instinctively led you to the living room.
Knife was gone. But the mark it left was a reminder of the alarms that went off in your head hearing yuta’s words.
You shook your head, deciding to stick to your original plan. Live and leave!
your to do list was not lengthy but still time consuming and luckily you won’t return until eight or nine so maybe you won’t face him today.
Tutoring, returning the boxes and some groceries.
You were recalling everything you had to do as your privilege to delay things was already gone a week ago. Being a senior in the same uni, you were the best option for the juniors, who could teach them the tips and tricks of attempting subjective exams and it was filling your bank account so you were not going to complain about teaching on Sunday as well.
The stack of plastic boxes seemed to be teasing you. There was no Johnny or jaemin, so it’d take atleast two rounds to get those downstairs and moreover you had to spend extra money on the taxi as well.
You whined loudly. The load of glitches in your life was not ending at all.
And all for the courtesy of none other than nakamoto yuta.
*****************************
“I’m back!?” yuta announced his presence in the house in his loud good morning voice. “What’s for breakfast?
“Your favourite!” jungwoo replied cheerfully, tying his shoelaces.
Yuta glanced around finding most of them busy with one task or another but one particular scene going about in the corner of the hallway caught his attention.
“you lost yours! this is mine!” ten was shouting at doyoung, the same so-done-with-everyone look on doyoung’s face and between their hands was a mask that was getting harassed by both of them.
“You haven’t been active since two months, so no chance that this is yours!”
“I just went with you few days ago-
“What the heck are you both jumpy for?” yuta interrupted their bickering. They both stopped instantly, taking in yuta’s appearance. with hair looking like a bird’s nest and clothes all crinkled like he was wearing his sleepwear which he was not!
“Hyung! he is not giving me the mask. Its mine. I can’t go out for mission without it!” doyoung whined pointing at the black face mask aka cover at yuta.
“Since when are you nursing such macho interests doyie?” yuta snickered at doyoung , ten joining as well.
Doyoung gave them a stern look before throwing the mask on ten’s face. “ I’m not going with you anymore” he grumbled before making his way upstairs but stopped midway, pointing towards yuta, “ and I’m telling yong you are here again!” and he ascended upstairs.
“Give him my cover ten.” yuta patted ten’s shoulder but before he could ask or say anything to him, yuta made a beeline for the kitchen.
There in the kitchen, chenle and Kun were already gossiping minus chenle’s screaming, so it was visibly something serious. They both stopped as soon as yuta neared them and he definitely noticed the transition in the mood.
“What you hiding lele?” he asked the boy, settling himself between him and Kun.
Chenle simply giggled in response, his face lighting up yuta’s mood.
“What’s for breakfast?” he curiously asked Kun.
“cereal.” Kun replied.
“What! But jungwoo said it’s my favourite!”
“Yeah. You can definitely have your favourite cereal!” Kun exclaimed, sharing a high touch with chenle who couldn’t stop giggling at yuta’s scrunched nose.
“Don’t you have a mission to attend?”
“Mission? Pfff. why are you calling it that? It’s just a regular deal and why do you smell like...” chenle pretended to sniff yuta before completing his verbal assault. “Like someone poured egg mixture on your head.” kuns eyed widened as he tried his best to control his laughter by pursing his lips.
Chenle let out a high pitched scream as yuta grabbed his neck from behind, chenle’s body squirming under the pressure.
“Don’t you want to live few more years!” yuta playfully warned him, leaving his neck. As soon as he was released, he ran out of the kitchen for his dear life.
“You ain’t being a good father Kun!” Kun shook his head at yuta’s remark and turned towards the coffee machine instead. Yuta on the other side trudged across him to find his cereal box.
“Did jaehyun called you?” Kun asked him.
“He would call me for what now?” yuta backfired pouring the milk into the bowl.
“Taeyong hyung had a message for you but he was a bit busy.”
“Busy my ass. His backyard is always stuck to that ten feet chair. Haven’t you noticed how flat he has become!” he said with mouthful of cereal making Kun chuckle and cough at the same time, the coffee tickling his throat.
“What’s so funny here?” taeyong arrived in the kitchen, his hand poorly covering his yawning.
At the very moment, Kun coughed harder, trying to divert taeyong’s attention. After few more seconds of pretending, he calmed down.
“Done?” yuta asked Kun, smiling at him. Kun frowned at him in response as taeyong watched the exchange amusingly.
Taeyong made his way towards the cabinets to get himself something to eat but yuta circled backwards, blocking him with his long legs, feet now placed at the lower cabinet.
Taeyong glared at him through his hooded eyes. “Go back to your home and let us live in peace!”
“This is my home and I have pledged to not let anyone live in peace, especially you.” yuta replied pointing his spoon at him.
“Not . anymore!” taeyong declared, emphasising each syllable.
“Why are going to the deal in pyjamas? Are you trying to impress someone there? Perhaps li-shan, Taiwanese weapon mogul. But I don’t think you can amaze her without showing your ugly face boss.” yuta jabbed at yong, wiggling his brow at him. But with each word leaving his mouth, he was annoying taeyong more than ever.
“Why not talk about you instead. Let’s explain kun what you did last night hmm!” taeyong brushed his palms together before folding them against his chest. Kun titled him head at his words. He was missing something probably.
“I don’t know what you are talking about yong.” yuta replied calmly but moved his legs to clear taeyong’s path, hoping he would slide away, taking his precious mouth with him.
taeyong that was facing yuta now rotated his body in kun’s direction, addressing him, “our dear yuta welcomed y/n into his life by slamming a knife into the coffee table, telling her to leave the fuck out of his life, all while being under influence of alcohol, which we all know was nothing but a façade.” the composed manner with which taeyong spoke was enough for yuta to break down his frisky mannerisms. He didn’t think you would rant him out to taeyong.
“So she is a whiny baby like our doyoung!”
“This is not what I mean and you know that!” taeyong’s voice rose, staring yuta down with his hands tucked in his pyjama pockets.
“It was a mistake”, yuta tried to explain, threading a hand through his hair, “I was drunk.” he completed quietly.
“Then how did u drive home? Were you drunk and driving?”
“I told you alre-
“Cut it yuta! I’m done hearing your stupid excuses for impulsive actions. Because of you she doubted me! Fucking me! Am I seriously a man of my words or was this all some stupid drama. She thinks I’ve hired you to slaughter her in her sleep! What the fuck, don’t you laugh at me now!” out of nowhere, yuta has started laughing and nobody knew what was so funny to him in the whole conversation.
“I seriously don’t remember anything except the knife part but now I feel like she might have peed her pants yesterday!”
“Bring her here tomorrow and you’ll apologise in front of me!”
Suddenly yuta’s face fell at his order. “No way in hell I’m doing that. And she’s never sitting in my car. ever.” he emphasised, leaving the stool to put dishes in sink.
“Oh wow. Ohkk. Then you are bringing her to the district office tomorrow. For registration. At sharp 9a.m and i don’t need any lame stupid excuses. And she’s sitting in the passenger seat of your car. Or you are apologising to her in front of everyone. A or b. you choose now!” taeyong stated with a flash of authority in his voice. They both eyed each other down as Kun whirled around to leave the negativity. He was done and that too for good.
“I’m going to shower.” yuta announced, rounding the counters to follow Kun but stopped once he reached the door.
“I don’t know what has come over you but I’ve never seen this much hatred in your eyes ever. not for anyone we know. never expected it from you yongie. why it has to be me hmm!”
taeyong’s anger reduced to one of puzzlement as he took in yuta’s word. He raised his hand to stop him but he was gone. Sitting on the stool and resting his head in between his hands, he could sense yuta’s hostility for him. Yuta has always been messing up with his head. That was nothing new. But when did his gamesome disputes got twisted into antagonism, taeyong was unable to find an answer for that. His intentions might not have been bonafide but they were truly far away from the malice yuta was accusing him of. He didn’t hate him. Never had. And never will. But now was not the time to repair their cuts. Because yuta won’t allow him to even try.

“Do you think of all the topics, Mrs. Kang is going to choose double jeopardy?” your junior or student at the moment, asked you in confusion, flipping through the pages of his constitution reference book.
“Yes she would. Definitely. And subjective on that. How many times do I have to repeat! There are just 73 pages of Article 13 on this book. Just pick and choose the precedents and landmark cases and you are done.” you concluded.
Just when you were about to taste your now cold chocolate latte, another one chirped up.
“Can’t we skip some of the civil rights? She gave us an assignment of ex post facto laws instead and we don’t think she’d question us on the topic she didn’t even taught in the first place!”
You suddenly chuckled, resting the cup on the small table. “That’s nothing new actually. For all I know, she has been doing this since she joined fifteen years ago. Topics differ but same pattern follows. She gives an assignment a month before exams, adds the grades as extra credit, imprinting a false presumption through her actions that she’d go in hell if she ever questions from that topic in exams. Everyone is happy that they can skip at least one topic without worrying about it and then boom!!!.She puts that very topic in subjective part. Voila! and everyone’s scores drop.” you sighed looking dramatically at the opposite wall. “But not actually everyone is that naïve so people like me and you actually do the chore of consulting our seniors. And this chain is as old as her career. So do you want to take the risk of doubting me?” you completed looking down at them with furrowed brows.
If words could kill, it’d have been the ones you just threw mercilessly at the young ones right now! They looked like seconds away from passing out. Your own face dropped at their helplessness so instinctively, you assured them.
“Hey! No pressure. You have one of the best guide here so I’ll make sure you ace the civil law!”
Their stiff shoulders relaxed for once in last 3 hours. Another forty five minutes and you would be leaving this small study room. The occasional yawns were not going away by coffee either. You were tired as hell but still had plenty to do. The visit to supermarket was still pending and you were not going to waste your precious money on taxi. Not again. You’d rather travel for an hour by bus to reach your new residence.
You were consumed in your own restless thoughts when the ringing of your phone woke you up.
Yugeom.
“Oye y/n, we are going to itaewon. A new restaurant has opened. At eight. Get ready and I’ll pick you up from dorms.”
no hello. No formalities. He commanded you like you were his junior soldier in a war waiting for his directions to act.
“Slow your roll! I’m busy. I can’t join you today.”
“What are you doing at this hour? Your tuitions ended an hour ago.”
“No. I missed previous sessions so I’m making up for It.” you heard a long sign from other side.
“Ok. So you are only fifteen minutes away from dorms! You can make it. If you say we’ll delay for an hour. How about now?” you cringed at his antics but you had no other option than to burst his hope.
“I’m busy after that. I’ve some grocery shopping to do. I moved out so I’m busy setting everything up.” you deliberately mumbled the last part.
“What the! You moved out. When and why” the happiness in his voice suddenly turned into one of annoyance, “Why is everybody hiding stuff from me these days? Jungkook is busy every other day doing don’t know what! And now you! You changed address and probably I’m the last person to be knowing this!” he huffed at the end.
“I don’t know about kooky but I just took the decision in emergency. And I promise I’ll treat you to bulgogi next time.” your peace offering to him was his favourite food so you knew you were in safer zone. that was the only way you knew. food.
“yeah yeah whatever. Its not like I expect you both to visit my grave or anything. just don’t miss yeong’s birthday. she would chop off your hair.”
“Yeah sure. Now bye. I’m busy.” you hung up with a smile plastered on your face, your students already waiting for you with knitted eyes.
“Oh sorry. What is it?” you apologised for distraction and moved your chair further to take a look at the book.
“Umm what should be the beginning sentence? I promise I’ll get through this, just give me a kick start.”
“Me too! I don’t want any less than an A.”
You rolled your eyes at their competitiveness and their dedication to cling to you for head starters. Last time, you told yourself that you won’t help them with papers next time. But their puppy faces got through you resolves. Every time.
“Doyeon, you can start with the maxim “autrefois convict” and how it is applied in other countries, indirectly giving a comparison with our system. And you!” you continued, concentrating on mingi. “You would give beginning of civil law and how it was admitted in Korea and then explain the article 13 while giving subtle hints about how our system is a bit shitty at this but don’t forget to sugar-coat or Mrs. Kang will make sure your stupid ass never completes law. afterall…Her husband is a judge in the high court !” you advised rather sarcastically, glancing back and forth between them in silence. As they understood the reference, a burst of loud hearty laughter covered the small room before all of you returned to your studies.

9:30 p.m.
Your sneakers squeaked as you dragged your tired body out of the elevator. The apartment ,besides being just few steps away seemed miles away for now. By the strength you were holding and pulling the jute bag up from the floor, you were sure the red marks would be visible by now. Odds were never in your favour these days, but still to save yourself from the wrath of the monster, you had decided to take a longer route instead. Travelling, dinner, shopping, you had turned these everyday jobs into a mission to avoid yuta. But you had forgot about the discomfort that’d be caused by these extra efforts.
So now here you were, wishing the door itself would come and welcome you!
As soon as the door came into sight, you dropped the bag just when your body slumped against it. You groaned again realising chelin is not there to drag your almost dead body inside, so you picked the bag again. 2610 and the entrance was in vision.
As if some sort of warning, three pairs of shoes welcomed you. You took a deep, harsh breath before entering the hallway mutely. You walked straight for the kitchen but were not unnoticed by the two male figures sitting on the couch. Their heads turned like owls when you placed groceries on the counter. yuta and mark. You peeked through your hooded eyes to notice that they were playing some sort of game on the t.v and it wasn’t hard to read that the sour look on their faces was due to your presence in the vicinity.
So you did what you initially intended to! Leaving the bag on the counter, you left for your room but apparently everything has a limit excluding your bad luck.
You turned around ,muffled exhausted moan leaving your pursed lips only to find that the filled jute bag was now halfway empty, little red balls rolling and rolling towards the couches and the little marathon of apples stopped only at mark’s feet. You stood there like a deer caught in headlights until your admirer spoke out.
“That’s not how you feed your guests Mrs. y/n and especially not your husband.” the third man, jaehyun, who was hidden behind yuta till now, voiced his very genuine concern for your manners.
You initially rolled your eyes at his comment, deciding to avoid him as much as possible and removed your backpack to pick up the fruits and candies. But while you were picking up the stuff, a very annoying laughter erupted from the opposite side, definitely from jaehyun so you decided to address him directly.
“Hate to burst your bubble jaehyun, but uninvited guests seldom meets a welcome. so the problem here is maybe not me!” you  gave him a tight lipped smile and started with your scattered groceries again, placing them one by one in the bag again, the jute now balanced nicely to contain them.
“Well I’ve have an official invitation to be a guest here. Anytime I want. So isn’t it your duty to be a good host!” his snarked.
“Oh then someone who can adopt you, can feed you as well! And I’m sure you are in good hands jaehyun ” you only heard a snicker and someone’s shushing voice as the oranges in your hand started to roll out again. You were already frustrated enough to handle jaehyun and now the oranges were not cooperating either.
You started collecting them again when a pair of legs shadowed you.
“Wait I’ll do it!” mark said sheepishly, his hands already holding the other apples.
“It’s ok”
“You are wobbling. Lemma help.” mark gestured towards the fruits ,  fixing his glasses with his knuckles.
“Thanks” you merely mumbled as he filled and picked the bag only to place it in the corner of the further counter, secured properly.
After he was done, you thanked him again before picking your bag to leave for room.
“y/n don’t play the ‘lets catch criminals’ game in your sleep, who knows you might not wake up from the trauma of the consequences.” he shouted at you, chuckling along the way.
You were sure if frustration and idiocy had a face, jaehyun surely matched them perfectly.
“登録事務所。明日。 9時に”
Your mouth hung open as you stopped with the hand on the knob, trying to decipher what he said but obviously it was of no use. You didn’t know any Japanese so you just shut the door behind.
Loud laughs and yelling disturbed your sleep and that continued till 11p.m and after multiple trips to bathroom, you were able to rest a bit.
And one more thing you noticed during your frequent visits, yuta had officially moved in as your roommate.
*****************************
Turning off the alarm, you hid your face further into the summer sheets. The night was a bit peaceful as compared to the ones you have been experiencing lately but in no way blissful. You missed your small single dorm bed, your comrade in the battles of stress. The rooster alarm had woke you up at 6 but for every student, the desire to be in the embrace of bed swells on the day called Monday. Reluctantly, you rubbed your eyes, sitting on the edge of the bed. But as you beheld the sight with squinted eyes, a smile crept on your face, your legs taking you towards the balcony. As you opened the sliding door, the warm of the morning sun welcomed you, making you close your eyes at the feeling.
After staying there for a few moments, you decided to get ready as the university was now actually too far away for anyone’s liking and you were supposed to attend the lecture of Intellectual property law at 9 a.m sharp
Collecting the clothes for the day, you pushed yourself for the bathroom. As you opened the top cabinet, there was everything but what you stacked a day ago.
There was a toothbrush, but clearly not yours. There were cleansers and toners, but again, not yours! Even your sanitary products were gone!
Yesterday night, the new hand wash that also didn’t belong to you had indicated that yuta has settled down but it was only now that you noticed, he had thrown out yours to accommodate his own stuff! You pulled your hair in frustration at his thought. He was a jerk, for sure, but of very senior kind. If hundred jerks were grinded in a mixer, only then one yuta could come into existence again.
Looking around ,your eyes fell on the cabinets below the sink, a bit inwards, that were probably used to put cleaners or something. But as you opened them , a squeal left your lips. There were no toilet cleaners but still your essentials were haphazardly thrown over each other. At least these weren’t thrown outside!
Huffing and puffing, you properly assembled them, ready to get through the day. Your main focus was not to trip yourself into another blunder but that yuta was scheming against you even in your absence. Not that you could do anything, but if there was a slightest probability, you’d slice his bitter tongue at first attempt. But no violence, even in thoughts. For now.
Somehow, the running water had managed to wash your cold head and you happily got ready for university in black long sleeved top and washed jeans. There was no need for scarf and yeong won’t be seeing you due to her paper presentation, so the fashion exercise was also cancelled. Putting your hair in a low ponytail, you grabbed your heavy backpack and went out to get some breakfast. The thought of cornflakes topped with apples was watering your mouth. So you ran out of the room, throwing bag on the couch, then made your way to food paradise.
Thanks to Kun or Johnny, the kitchen was already well equipped with the utensils and cutlery but still it was hard to navigate to find a small bowl for cereal. Once the hunt for glass bowl ended, you gasped!
In your hurry to dodge the them yesterday, you had totally forgotten to refrigerate the milk and there was no doubt the milk was spoiled by now.you sighed digging through the bag for your milk cartons but wow! there was cereal, apples, which needed to be stored as well, the chocolates, but no milk. you were sure that you indeed paid for the two milk cartons but no nothing, nada!. biting your nails, you eyed the fridge. Could it be!
Yes, it was. The cartons were stored in the fridge fresh and packed. You would thank that mark boy someday, if he remain cordial with you! of course.
The milk was too cold for your preference, but everything’s better than starving! The watch on your wrist read 7:40, you were on time like always. You stored the milk back and washed the dishes. Last thing you wanted to hear was that man taunting you for not keeping the space clean. Tossing two apples into the bag, you marched for the door.
“Where are you going?” rotating in your steps, you noticed yuta standing by the counter, shirtless, wearing only jeans, drying his hair with a towel and his orbs staring into yours in a showdown.
“A student with a backpack at 8a.m! I won’t be going to a fight club right!” you replied impulsively but immediately regretted opening your mouth, noticing his warning gaze. You again turned to continue but he paused you again.
“You are breaking the deal here then! Taeyong hates deceivers and results of his rage are not very pleasant either. Not that I would mind anything here”
Your face twisted as to why would taeyong would feel being defrauded at your uni trip! He himself told you to continue study.
As you dictated your same thoughts to yuta, you were met with a questionable look.
“I’m talking about district office. The place where we are going to register this peaceful treaty. Today. At 9 a.m.” he air quoted peaceful as you took in his words. He could be lying right! As if he heard your thoughts, he clarified with a smirk garnishing his lips, “It’s not an assassination attempt. You won’t be walking right now if I wanted to kill you so much.”
You gulped at his words but regained composure moment later, “but taeyong didn’t inform me about this and I’m late for my lecture. I can’t miss it without informing my teacher. So go alone.”
“I would love to sweety! But I had informed you yesterday and they need both of us, unfortunately.” he was still crushing his blonde hair with the towel.
“We didn’t even talk yesterday!”
“You didn’t. I did. I told you right when you were outside your room so don’t lie. If you want to go, wait here. Or else take the bus. I don’t mind.” he concluded, walking away. And you thought he was shit-talking in Japanese.
“I don’t understand Japanese. So talk to me in Korean or English next time.” you shouted at his back, frowning in annoyance.
“DON’T YOU STUDY LAW OR SOMETHING?”
You groaned loudly at his illiterate comment. “Japanese isn’t a law subject you moron!” you mumble to yourself, fishing out your phone to shoot taeyong a text.
You: district office meeting is today?”
Waiting, you moved to the couches. His response came immediately.
Taeyong b.n: hmm. Johnny and doyoung would be there so jaehyun won’t be a trouble to you. If yuta does anything, do tell me. Bye.
You threw your head at the back, moaning in an ugly tone. The idea of travelling with yuta was daunting and nerve wrecking. And jaehyun was just cherry on top. Single minute in his presence made you felt like an intruder. So much for new family. Then there was Johnny who could be counted as totally normal if placed in same balancing scales as these foolish brains and Kun had same vibes as jungkook, positive and put together. And from jungkook, your mind floated to chelin. You had decided to let her choose some skirts for you as it would make her happ-
You craned your neck at the sound of utensils. Yuta, now properly dressed ,was making food for himself. And he was wearing black shirt and washed jeans. Same as you. How insufferable. You were going to be looking like his little sister or something!
“Hurry up!” you exclaimed. “I have a lecture. I want to attend the half of it at least.” crossing your arms, you tried to focus on the t.v instead. Your previous happy mood was nowhere to be found in the reflection that faced you!
“We aren’t going on a bicycle. And we are going to a govt. office. Forget about the lecture, you’ll die of standing in the queues anyway.” he scoffed at you, taking a bite of the bread.
Cabinet open. Cabinet shut.
Refrigerator open. Shut.
Another thud. Maybe of glass bowl. By the sound of it, the bowl he was using won’t last for too many days.
A few moments of silence.
at this point, you could hear your own heartbeat, but still you were on edge. Your legs were restlessly shaking, fingers crossed, and thumbs fighting for dominance. Then suddenly, you face contorted at a certain sound.
Slurping. And it continued to breach the silence for few more moments. A louder thud.
“Are you sleeping or what? It’s not like I’m dying to drive you!”  The repulsion in his voice was clear.
Not choosing to answer, you picked the bag, walking outside, stopping only at the shoe rack.
“Oops. Wait. I think I forgot my sweetheart inside!” he announced before going back.
A small seat was attached with the shoe rack. You were tying your shoelaces when yuta sat beside you, picking up his own shoes. You gave a side glance to his shoes, the sight making your eyes round with surprise. A knife was clearly visible through his white sock. and maybe one of many. You jerked your head to focus on your own shoes. You got up before he did, smoothing the sleeves of your top.
What you missed were yuta’s eyes. On you. More specifically, on the ring, decorating your forefinger. His hooded eyes travelled upwards from finger to your waist, he gulped at the sight of your chest which was slightly pushed out due to straps of the bag but he halted right there, opting not to look further. He suddenly wanted to look anywhere but you. He peeked again but was glad that you were busy with your ponytail, instead of giving him any attention. He abruptly got up, cleaning his hands with the sanitizer he had kept yesterday right there.
While walking away, he looked behind, “wait outside the building.” he said like he was reading a morning newspaper, in stoic and emotionless voice. Opening the door, he stilled again, “and wear the ring in the third finger. Got to make them believe!” and he was gone.
You looked at the platinum which was shimmering due to the light. You closed your hand tightly after changing it.
**************************************
The entire car ride was silent. Not comfortable one but the kind that could make one nauseous. As the district office was approaching, the discomfort intensified. your gnashed you teeth in an attempt to control your movements, moved the zipper of the bag up and down , sideways but your heart beating sped up like never before as yuta parked the car.
You jumped out as soon as he opened the door, craving for fresh air. Taking deep breaths, you gave light pats on your churning stomach. Once feeling a little better, you circled the car to reach where yuta was standing. He didn’t say anything but you followed him mindlessly.
“Morning y/n. how are you?” you peered at Johnny, who was smiling at you, expecting a response. You merely nodded at him, hugging your arms,.
“Hurry up. Its almost 9. I don’t have much time.” jaehyun said, not even acknowledging your presence.
“How much time do we have to wait for our turn?” you asked Johnny, now fumbling with the bag straps like a nervous school kid.
“Not even a sec!! jae got it here. Just witness signatures have to be done and then they’ll make you sign on a register.”
Reminder to not believe a fuck yuta says!
“Give me your bag. It won’t look very smart,” you handed over your bag to Johnny as everyone else was already miles away.
It was not even a room, if you could say. It was just a cabin with a small sign marriage registration written on it. There were plenty of people waiting but somehow you were the first or at least it looked like it.
“Please sit.” the lady offered politely, pointing towards the two chair opposite hers. You and yuta took seats as jaehyun opened the papers for her. She went through all the three pages in painfully slow speed, intermittently glancing at you both through her round glasses.
You were focused on her as she matched the details of birth certificates with papers when Johnny nudged you. He was trying to say something ,by actually not saying anything.
A smile. Then he looked at yuta. And he kept repeating it until you understood.
Smile. Yuta. Smile yuta. Smile yuta???
Ohh smile at yuta!!
You nodded profusely before turning towards yuta who was receiving the same instructions from doyoung but was too oblivious to catch anything. You waited for him to pick up and when he faced you, found you already doing the same. He plastered a smile on his face, you mirroring him instantaneously. And that was when you noticed, the twinkle in his eyes, howsoever fake, but still a beautiful sight. Your curved lips almost dropped at this. His eyes didn’t left your face as he scanned it completely. You, for a fact knew, your smile didn’t reach your eyes. You were just unable to do that. And nobody has ever questioned it but yuta’s eyes! , his eyes were teasing you. That he was better at this game. And that you were lacking something when compared to him!
“You kids are so fine!” you broke your eye contact at her voice, thanking her internally. “Most couples these days just come here, being all over each other and blah blah but the ones who try to find the shine in other’s eyes are like rare diamonds. Keep looking at each other and you’ll both find your paradise someday.” she clasped her hands together, tilting her head slightly to look at your figures. Her smile seemed …hopeful! How could she not realise that you both were faking being happy!
“You can sign here!” she exclaimed. You both signed at mentioned space. Afterwards Johnny and doyoung also signed as immediate witnesses.
“Collect the certificate in two days.” she said, an indication for you that you were over with another drama. You bowed to her before leaving, not forgetting to briefly smile at her.
Were you both that believable? Maybe faking being intimate wasn’t that of a trouble! Or maybe it was because you were both good at the art of pretence!
“Your bag y/n.” you took it from Johnny, putting it on your shoulders immediately. Taking out your hair tucked in the back side of the bag, you nodded at Johnny as goodbye, making your way outside.
“Hey wait!”
You stopped at his voice.
“Taeyong gave a message. The reception is on Friday evening. And lemma drop you. I’m not going with them.” you didn’t even know how to react at his words as you shook your head in refusal, your tummy giving you active signs of running away.
“No. I’m fine. Bye. take care.” you concluded, sprinting outside for a wave of fresh air, leaving Johnny behind, dumbfolded.
“Quite a runner!” jaehyun laughed as he and others joined Johnny.
“Yeah. She was shouting about some lecture at 9 a.m. maybe if she runs like bolt, there’s a chance to attend it!” yuta spoke. jaehyun laughed as if what yuta said was actually really funny.
“No. she is just hurt and upset.” Johnny explained, following you but immediately stopped at yuta’s words.
“shield cant be a sword johnny. Shield can never be a sword!”

Make Me: part 4 (1897 words) - apartment 702
Tumblr media
• • • • • •
After you find out the apartment building you want to move into doesn’t allow singles, you meet Jin, a man in the same predicament as you.
You never knew that being fake engaged to somebody would simultaneously make your life so much easier and that much harder.
And like all fake dating stories, shit hits the fan when one of you starts to catch feelings.

You were kind of nervous, if you were being honest with yourself. Jin was going to meet you at the shop and then the two of you would walk over to the apartment together with Bambi. Today was finally the meeting with the landlord to sign your half of the contract. You were still wondering how Jin was able to sign his half of the contract early, but you weren’t going to pry. Maybe you’d find out later anyways.
You thought it was unlike yourself to jump into something the way that you were jumping into this, but you were desperate to leave Yoongi and Moonbyul alone. You were sure that they’d never kick you out, but you didn’t really want to impose on them and their relationship. They’d never get any alone time.
There was barely anyone in the shop as you waited for Jin to meet you here —only Yoongi dealing with a single customer behind the counter.
Looking down at your left hand that you were using to pet Bambi, you observed the small gold band you’d found to put on your ring finger. It wasn’t much, but it was all you could find in the short notice to make you seem engaged. It was convincing enough, you thought; however, you can’t help but know that it’s not what you’d actually want as an engagement ring. You didn’t want something huge, but you wanted at least a diamond.
“What time is he supposed to be here again?” Yoongi asked from behind the counter, breaking you out of your impractical fantasies. The bell of the shop rang as the customer he was just helping exited.
“He should be here any minute, I guess. I’m just nervous, you know,” you admitted, scratching under Bambi’s collar. It was his favourite spot. He leaned into you, almost collapsing onto the floor. Hobi left him here this morning because he knew that the landlord would want to meet Bambi when signing the agreement.
“Hopefully by the end of the day you’ll be a new leaser, right? And you won’t have to live on my couch for a month…” He said the last bit under his breath, but you knew that it was all in good fun. It wasn’t that you would have wanted to live on his and Byul’s couch, but that was certainly better than behind the counter of the shop.
The door bell chimed again; this time a man in a police uniform came into view. You didn’t want to smile, but you couldn’t help it. He had a goofy look on his face when he saw you, and it only became more funny as he walked to where you and Bambi were waiting for him. In a second, he got down on one knee.
He hadn’t even said hello yet.
“Y/N, I just knew that you probably didn’t have a ring, so I have this one for you to wear,” he said seriously, picking up your left hand.
You gaped at him, barely noticing the surprised expression on his face when he saw the gold and already there. He shook his head and feigned hurt, “Ouch, babe, you already got one?”
But he still took it off and slipped on a beautiful diamond ring. If you weren’t gaping before, you definitely were now. “Jin! What is this?! Get up!” You grabbed his arm and led him back onto his feet.
“What?” He smiled, making eye-contact with Yoongi behind the counter. He’d seen the exchange and was silently laughing at the situation in front of him.
“This…you…no…I can’t…” you trailed off, not knowing what to say. That was too expensive for you to wear around when you weren’t even together!
“Relax,” he drawled, taking your hand and opening the palm before placing the gold band into it. “It used to belong to someone but she no longer wants it. Plus, if you’re going to be my fiancee, you have to at least look the part! I would never settle for a gold band…I mean unless she hated diamonds but that doesn’t even matter I guess, so I don’t know why I’m talking about it again. Uhh, but yeah, it’s not important. Just wear it.”
You didn’t ask any questions, smiling at his nervous rant, but you heard deep sadness in his voice around all the joking.
Bambi whined at your feet, wanting attention again. Jin was the first to come to him and picked him up from he ground. He was in his element. For some reason, Bambi loved men, and you knew right now that he was a fan on Jin. He licked his neck a few times and couldn’t stop wagging his tail. You really couldn’t help but smile.
“Are you ready to go?” He asked, putting Bambi back into the floor, locating his leash hanging on a hook beside the door. Walking over to grab it, he bent down and hooked it onto Bambi’s collar. When you didn’t answer right away, he looked up at you expectantly.
“Oh, uh, yeah. Are you going to change?” You asked. He was still in his uniform after all.
“I have to get back to work right after.”
You nodded, it made sense…but… “What if she thinks it’s unprofessional?”
Jin thought about it for a second and then shook his head. “Nah, she’s not too bad.”
You deadpanned. “Her unwritten apartment rules are low-key illegal, I think, and you think she’s chill? I mean fine. It’s your call.” You threw in a small laugh, trying to hide your anxiety.
Looking back at Yoongi, you called, “Okay, we’re leaving! I’ll be back soon!”
Yoongi waved you off like he couldn't care less. “Yeah, yeah I got it covered here. Go!”
You looked at Jin, who seemed to be happily walking Bambi. “So do you think we’ll be convincing enough?” You asked, falling into step beside him.
“Sure? Why wouldn’t we be?” He asked, grabbing your hand. Before you could ask why, he continued. “We need to b comfortable touching each other, Y/N. That’s what couples do. I will hold your hand at the meeting, so I want it to feel like we’d at least done it once before.”
“Oh, okay,” you answered, linking your fingers with his. It felt nice, actually. You hadn’t bothered to date recently, just because you didn’t find anyone to be that interesting. But this felt good. Human contact was nice.
“Are you okay with this?” He asked, stopping once the apartment building came into view.
“It’s a little late, don’t you think?” You joked, nudging your shoulder with his.
“Then don’t freak out, but I’m going to kiss you right now. We need to get it over it.” His eyes didn’t meet yours. Instead, he looked at your lips.
What?
He kissed you as soon as he said he was going to, not really giving you a chance to think. It seemed like he pulled away as soon as he started, however.
“You call that a kiss?” You joked, tilting your head to the side.
“What?” He laughed, pulling further away. He was blushing, and you thought it was adorable.
“Don’t freak out, but I’m going to kiss you right now,” you used his own words against him. You kissed him a little more forcefully than he had, not worrying about being gentle. You realized that you’d wanted to kiss him. You held onto his neck as you nudged him. You could tell he was hesitant to kiss you deeper, but you were satisfied when he finally did.
But he still cut it off by pushing your shoulders back. “Are you ready to go in?”
You pretended to not feel a little hurt, but the feeling vanished once he smiled brightly at you. “I guess…”
“It’s not you, Y/N. I promise. You’ll find out in a few minutes whether I want you to or not,” he revealed, pulling you into the office where you were meeting the landlord.
“What do you m—” You tried to ask but were cut off by the landlord herself.
“Are you two ready to come in?” She seemed nice enough, but you knew that was probably an act considering her strict rules for tenants. “Cute dog,” she added as she was walking back to her chair.
“His name is Bambi,” you revealed sitting in one of the two chairs opposite her desk. Jin took the seat to your left and naturally took your hand in his. He pulled in onto his lap. Bambi jumped onto yours, settling into you like he did every night after work.
“So Jin, this is your fiancée?” She asked, eyeing you. “Did you like your wedding present?”
“I’m so pleased,” you answered, putting a few pieces of the puzzle together. Clearly, Jin was supposed to move into here with is fiancee, but she was nowhere to be found. Also, your guess was that the ring was hers. It almost made you a little sick to be wearing another woman’s ring. The only consolation was that it wasn’t like you two were actually engaged.
“If you two don’t mind, I’ll just run over the agreement with you and then we can sign and I’ll show you your apartment!”
You nodded, petting Bambi as you tried to settle your nerves. It was kind of boring, but you took it all in. You still couldn’t believe this was all happening. When she was finished, you quickly signed your name on the dotted line, and you were headed to the assigned apartment.
Jin held the door open for the both of you and then quietly grabbed your hand again. It calmed you, having his hand in yours, and you wondered if he felt the same, considering he rarely let it go.
“You two will have apartment 702. So we’ll just head to the elevator…”
You looked at Jin, who was tapping his feet to the elevator music and then to the landlord, who had an almost pleasant smile on her face.
In a second, you were outside the door to the apartment, and she was handing Jin the key. He opened the door for you and you walked inside, amazed at the place. It wasn’t furnished, but the hardwood floors were beautiful and the kitchen was huge. “It’s perfect,” you whispered before leaning  down to Bambi and telling him, “This is your new home, Bud!”
You smiled up and Jin and then the landlord before handing her your phone. “Do you mind taking a picture of the three of us?”
“Oh! Of course!” She said, taking the phone from your hands. You walked back to Jin and put your arms around his waist. He looked down at you and then at the camera with a smile.
“If you could take a few, that would be perfect,” Jin added, kissing your cheek before turning you to kiss your lips.
“Ok, I got them! I should get back to work though, so…have fun you two,” she said, giving you back your phone and then closing the door behind her with a wink.
Once the door was closed, you looked back at Jin with a big smile on your face and then raced to look inside the bedrooms. Oh yes, you would be happy here.

Snowy Days - Jihoon
❀ genre: college life + romance + a dash of angst
❀ word count: 5491
❀ a/n: just read the tags below but if ur too lazy to basically: don’t expect lots of updates and i just wrote this as a form of therapy for me. i guess i missed writing and needed to rant /shrugs/
also this title sucks but idk what to do with it either LMAO
❀ ❀ ❀
It was a quiet, winter evening; the snow was gently falling outside and the laughter of college students filled the dorm hallways.
I, on the other hand, was curled up in a ball on my bed, reading a book. The soft sounds of my hand turning the pages lulled me in a dreamland of swoon-worthy boys.
Suddenly, I heard a loud bang.
I flinched and jumped up on my bed to see what had dropped.
“Sorry! Just dropped my pan, how’s it going?” I sighed thankfully, realizing it was just my roommate, Naeun. Naeun was a freshman like me; we hadn’t talked much before rooming together. We got along most of the time, but being around people just irked me sometimes.
I pointed at the book, trying to hide the girlish daze in my eyes.
“Just reading, like usual.” I kept my words short, hoping she would get the hint that I wasn’t in the mood to talk. It wasn’t like I was mad at her or anything, but I need my breaks with all the socialness of college. I don’t think people understand how tiring it is for introverts to have to be “on” all the time; “on” meaning social.
She nodded. “What book?”
“It’s called ‘Win Some, Lose Some’ by Shay Savage. It’s a really amazing novel about a boy who was Autism and a girl who ...” I trailed off when I realized she had her back towards me. The sound of her pots and pans flying into her drawer was distracting. “A girl who befriends him basically. How was your day?” I asked politely.
I braced myself for her long winded answer. Most people just say “good” or “it was pretty alright” but not Naeun, she pops off and talks about things no one really needs to know, and no one really cares.
“It was okay. I saw one of my friends on campus and I waved to her because it’s so weird, right? Seeing people you know on such a large campus. And then I walked to English and my professor was just such in a good mood today, she’s so nice, I love her.”
I smiled carefully, hoping she doesn’t realize how much I do not care about who she waves at or how her professor looks.
“Then, I went to the library and did some of my math homework and I got started on the next chapter. And then I started to do my English homework which I got kind of stumped on. Anyway, all I could think about is this big burrito when I was studying.” She took out two large burritos and plopped them on a blue plate.
I nodded and told her I was going to go back to my book. She nodded and right as I was about to plug in my earbuds to drown out her voice while I read, she stopped me with her voice.
“Hey, I’m bored, do you think Ahyoung and Somi are busy?” I took out my earbuds once more and shrugged.
“Probably not.”
“Hm. Is it cool if I invite them over? I mean, you don’t have to say yes if you just want to be alone, I know how you get like that.”
I forced an awkward smile. “Um, I actually want to just chill and be alone, but you can always go to their rooms... they live in the same building.” I tried not to let my annoyance show in my voice, but it was rising.
She furrowed her brows and sighed. “Yeah, but they’re so far...” She whined.
Don’t roll your eyes. Don’t roll your eyes. Don’t roll your eyes.
“I mean, they always come to our dorm, maybe go to them today?” I really didn’t care what she did, I just wanted to be alone.
I turned on my music and opened my book so I didn’t have to hear her complain. She went back on her phone and I was content reading in peace.
Five minutes later, I heard loud knocking on the door.
What? She did not just...
“Oh, hey, Ahyoung! How’s it going?”
No way, she did not just invite people over after I told her not to.
I felt my blood boil, but I tried to keep my calm. I was not going to make a scene, especially since Ahyoung was my friend.
I locked eyes with Naeun, who I visibly glared at.
“It’s chill, y/n, you don’t have to talk we are just gonna hang a bit and then go watch some TV.”
I bit my tongue to not snap at her. Her insensitivity was rubbing me the wrong way, but I didn’t want to blow up. We were all adults here, I didn’t want to seem like a child who got irritated when they were forced to socialize with their mom’s friends.
Soon, I heard another knock.
“Hey, Sooyoung! Come in, we are picking a show to watch.”
I tried to calm down and read my book, but when I say I want to be alone, I really mean I want to be alone.
I felt myself boil over in anger as I could still hear them over my earbuds. Their laughter and constant chatter couldn’t be tuned out.
“Ok, we are gonna go to the lounge and watch TV. High five!” Naeun held her hand right in front of my face and I hit it just to make her leave. I swear, I’d rather hit her face instead.
As soon as I heard the door slam shut, I pulled out my earbuds and went to rinse my face.
How insensitive of her! I explicitly told her not to invite anyone over to the dorm, and there she goes. She can’t walk up one flight of stairs to see our friends?? So fucking rude.
Living in the dorms as an introverted person was terribly hard. I don’t even know if introverted is the right word for it anymore if I want to go days without talking to people. And it sucks when no one truly understands me and doesn’t take my words seriously.
I groaned and stared at myself in the mirror.
“Just two more quarters and you’re free for the summer.”
I sighed and wiped my face on my towel.
College was hard.
I had found my group in college, but unfortunately, I had made the same mistakes as I did in high school. First, I stayed connected with some friends from high school who I had planned on cutting off. And most importantly, I put too much time and effort into people who disrespect me and don’t care for me.
And now I live with someone like that.
It angered me to feel so out of place, so alone in the dorms even when I had friends. Whenever I wanted to escape, there was no where to go. All my friends were here.
I clenched my fist.
All of a sudden, I couldn’t just sit down and read. I glanced over in the corner of the room and saw the camera from my photography class sitting there.
I looked outside my window and saw the soft snow falling down.
I quickly pulled on a warm, puffy jacket, jeans, and headed out to take some photos with my trustworthy camera.
-----
The air was colder than I remembered. I felt my nose crinkle as the wind blew snow into my nose.
The city was beautiful; it was painted in white sparkles. I snapped a few photos and took a deep breath.
I loved being outside and having no one notice me; this was one of my favorite things about living in the city and college in general. I snapped pictures of groups of people walking across the street. The blur of the street lights combined with the softness of the snow captivated me.
“Some nice pics you got there.”
I jumped at the voice and almost dropped my camera; thankfully, it’s always wrapped around my neck.
“Oh gosh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t think you’d get so scared.”
I looked up and saw a boy around my age staring at me. And dang, was he cute.
I thanked God for the weather because my cheeks were already red.
“Uh, um, it’s fine.” I fibbed quickly. I felt awkward because I didn’t know how to act around guys my age, especially ones as cute as him.
Be friendly, be friendly. He just wants to be friends.
“Um, I’m y/n by the way.” I took out my hand to shake his. He chuckled and reciprocated the action.
“Jihoon, Park Jihoon. You live in this building too?” He pointed at the building next door to me. I shook my head and watched as the snow fell onto my shoulders.
“Oh no, I live in this one.” He nodded. “Are you a freshman?” I asked.
He laughed heartily. I liked how he didn’t hide his emotions. “Oh no, I’m a sophomore this year but I’m an RA in this building.”
I made an “O” shape with my mouth. “Ah, a resident adviser. I’m applying to be one next year, kinda nervous but hopefully I’ll get the job.”
His eyes widened. “Oh really? I rarely meet people who want to baby a bunch of freshmen.” I laughed at his comment. “But hey, it’d be cool if we were in the same dorm next year. You could teach me to take such pretty pictures.” I laughed and flipped through the photos on my camera out of habit.
“Don’t get your hopes up, I haven’t even been accepted for the job yet. Also, I’m taking photography 101 with Professor Lee Miyoung, I’m sure she’s a better teacher than I am.” I teased.
He shrugged. “Well, I doubt she’s as pretty as you.”
My heart froze.
W-what? Did he just flirt with me? Oh god, what do I say now? How do I flirt back? I-
“Sorry, was that weird? I wanted to call you pretty but I didn’t mean to lowkey talk about a professor’s beauty either.” He looked mildly embarrassed when he shook out his hair full of snow.
I gave him a small smile. “Um, no, not weird, it was actually kind of smooth. I don’t really know how to respond to flirting.”
Oh my god. I just said that.
His eyes lit up mischievously as I tried not to blush even harder.
“Oh flirting? Is that what we are doing?” He teased.
“Technically, that’s what you are doing.” He laughed loudly and his voice echoed throughout the streets. I only hoped to have that loud of a voice as an RA.
“You got me there.” He then looked down at his watch and frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
He looked up at me with his soft brown puppy eyes. I swear this guy is too cute to be real. “Um, my shift is starting soon.” He then took out his phone. “I know we just met, but you seem pretty cool-”
Before he could finish, I took his phone and typed in my number.
“There, now you can teach me how to be an RA and I can teach you how to take photos.” I said as confidently as I could.
He seemed a bit surprised at my voice, but nodded.
“Sounds great, see you later.” He waved to be as he walked away, but slipped on a patch of snow.
“Ah, be careful!” I shouted. He gave me a small smile and walked back into his dorm.
Well, at least this day ended on a high note.
-----
“Hey, where’d you go last night? We were wondering where you were at.”
I’m an adult, I don’t have to tell you everywhere I go.
I bit back the words and forced a small smile. “Oh, I just went to take some photos for my photography class. The snow looked really pretty last night.” I left out the minor detail that a cute boy started to talk to me. I wanted to keep the giddiness to myself.
“Oh cool. I just came back from the gym. I saw a really cute boy in there. He was really fit, dark skinned, dark hair. And he smiled at me and I smiled back. We didn’t get to talk because I was so out of breath, but I hope he’s at the gym again.” She went off without me asking her too.
I understand that I’m being a bit tough on her, but she irritated me first by inviting people over when I told her not to. People always talk about communication in college, but sometimes people just don’t listen to you.
“Cool, hope you see him again.” I said nicely. I have to put on a nice face with my roommates, as I don’t want to be in an awkward living situation.
“Yeah... how was your day today?”
-----
“And then she just invited you guys over, disregarding what I had just said before! Isn’t that rude?” I voiced to Ahyoung, my best friend. I’d known her before going to college, well, I’ve known her since we were 8.
She looked a bit hesitant on what to say.
I went on about the situation. “I’m not saying I hate seeing you guys, but you know how I get when I want to be alone. I...I just want to be alone and it makes me crazy when I see people. Plus, I told Naeun I wanted to chill out and be alone and then she just invites you guys over, without telling me?? I’m not crazy.” I ranted.
Ahyoung sighed and took a sip of her coffee filled with milk and sugar.
“I mean, she did say she was inviting us over in the groupchat.”
I glared at the younger girl. “Excuse me, I was sitting right next to her, she knows I didn’t check my phone. It’s rude to not tell your roommate you’re inviting people over, and it’s even ruder when we just talked about how I didn’t want her to invite people over. It’s not like she forgot within the five minutes.”
“True. That wasn’t nice of her.” I noticed she hesitated on saying anything bad about her. We were all friends, but I was the one who had problems with friends in the group, as usual. I didn’t like very many people, but I was civil and nice to everyone; that’s what being an adult is all about.
“Yeah...” I trailed off. I don’t know when it got so weird between us, but it felt like I couldn’t talk to my best friend about things in my life. I didn’t even tell her about the cute guy who flirted with me. Deep inside of me, I knew she didn’t deserve to know these things about me when she didn’t want to hear the bad parts of my life.
It felt like everyone wants to be around me when I’m laughing and joking, never when I’m serious and want to talk about my feelings. No one wants to listen when I want to rant about real things in life, yet they love when someone rants about some “dumb” thing a girl did in the hallway.
I didn’t get why they judged people before they knew them. I always tried to talk with people before I made judgements, yet people think it’s weird when I judge people I talk to. That’s the way you’re supposed to judge people... when you get to know them personally. Duh.
As I was talking, I saw her eyes focused on something far away from me.
I turned around and saw her crush standing there. She stopped listening to me as he waved at her. I saw her eyes bright up when she saw him and I grew annoyed. I was telling her about something that was bothering me, and then she chooses a boy over me. Not cool.
“Hello? Earth to Ahyoung??” I teased. She shrugged me off.
“He’s so cute. I know he doesn’t like me, but I can’t help myself.”
I snorted. “Yeah, he doesn’t like you and actually, he only dates white girls and you my friend, are not white.” I knew I was being harsh, but I hear about him every single second and it angers me when I want to vent about something in my life and she doesn’t think I’m as important as her crush.
She flinched at my harsh words.
“You just wouldn’t understand, you’ve never had a crush before. You’ve never been in love before.” She said matter of factly.
Ouch.
This was all true, but it hurt when she said it like that. I’ve never felt romantic love, wow, thanks for reminding me. Maybe I’m too busy taking care of my dumb friends who don’t care about me.
Maybe.
-----
“Bye, see you later.” I waved her off as we both went to class.
As soon as I turned around, I saw a familiar face.
Jihoon.
I fixed my hair and prayed none of my mascara had smeared on my face.
Be confident, make friends.
“Hey, Jihoon.” He turned around with a confused look on his face. I felt a leap in my heart when he smiled at me.
“Oh hey y/n, it’s weird to see you without a camera.” He joked.
I felt my heart skip a beat when he said my name; I was so used to people forgetting about me.
“Hah, well it’s weird to see you in the daylight.” I joked. When I saw him left an eyebrow, I knew I said something wrong.
I felt my face burn up at my own words.
“Not like that.” I blubbered out. He let out a light laugh.
“Well, I mean, you’re right.” He took note of my embarrassed state and changed the subject. “So, what class are you headed to?”
“History of the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds, how bout you?”
“Woah, what an interesting class. I’m heading to choir practice actually.” That made me stop in my tracks.
“Wait, you sing?”
He chuckled. “Yup, that is what you do in choir.” I felt a bit embarrassed at my statement. “I’m joking, I’m joking, but yes, I do sing. Have been doing so for my whole life.”
“I did choir up until high school, I didn’t feel good enough for college. I still don’t know how to read music and it’s been years.”
“It’s hard, but you get used to it. You should give it a shot if you really want to though. Or come watch one of our performances.” I smiled at him.
“One day.” I stopped walking and pointed at the building in front of us. “This is me. I’ll see you later?”
He nodded and smiled.
“I’ll see you later.”
-----
Two weeks had passed and I hadn’t seen much of Jihoon. We waved to each other in passing, but it was midterms soon, and exams were the only thing on my mind. We sent each other memes daily though and we just got each other’s humor- that was rare.
I was filling out my history study guide until I heard my roommate, Naeun, walk in.
“Hey, y/n~ Ahyoung, Sooyoung and I saw you talking to a boy yesterday~ Oooooooo what’s his name?”
She sat right in front of me, not giving me any personal space.
I tried not to blush but honestly, my face was turning red because I was so annoyed at her.
“His name is Jihoon. He’s an RA in the dorm next to us, we met at an RA informational meeting.” I lied. I didn’t want to tell her I ran out of the dorm because I couldn’t handle her and people.
“He’s cute, nice body too.” I felt a an overwhelming sense of jealously and protectiveness wash over me. I hated it. I didn’t want to be this person. I probably only felt this way because I didn’t like Naeun right now.
“Yeah, you can have him if you want. I’m not into him.” I lied.
She raised a brow. “Really? Don’t be upset if he falls for me then.” I knew she was joking when she flipped her hair dramatically, but I wasn’t into it.
I felt my buried insecurities rise when I stared intensely at her face. Her eyebrows were neatly plucked, which I was always too scared to do. Her skin was tanned and even, not blotchy and red like mine. Her fashion was trendy and most boys liked her because of her socialness, on the contrary, I was awkward and mean to boys, unintentionally.
I just went back to doing my homework, shaking off the comparison.
-----
Later that night, I saw a message pop up in my texts which was weird because I usually mute everyone.
‘hey midterms are killing me and i dont understand anything... want ice cream?’
I tried not to laugh even though both my roommates were at the library.
‘uhhh shouldnt u be studying if u dont understand anything?? mayb??’
‘LOL thats not how it works young padawan’ I rolled my eyes. He thinks he’s so much older than me.
‘also I don’t eat ice cream, i don’t eat dairy’
‘... aight imma head out’
I snorted and tilted my head back in laughter.
‘ok, no ice cream... what DO you like?’
You. I like you.
... Definitely not sending that.
‘UMMM i like hot chocolate?’
‘okay, i’ll be at your dorm in 5. what is your room number again?’
‘303′
‘aight’
I looked down at short shorts and tank top and then at the harsh winds outside. I threw on a pair of cute leggings and a heavy sweater. I put on a black jacket over it and placed a beanie on my head.
I did my brows and put on a few swipes of mascara. I carefully applied my lightly colored lip balm and sprayed face mist to look dewy and cute.
Is this a date? Or is this just two friends being adventurous?
Whatever, I want to look cute at least.
Seconds after I finish, I hear a knock at my door. I took a deep breath.
This isn’t a date. This isn’t a date. Calm down.
I opened the door.
He was wearing a puffy jacket and dark black jeans that outlined his thigh muscles. Yum.
I also noticed he was wearing a gray beanie... which was identical to mine.
“Cute hat.” I noted. He grinned and tugged on my beanie.
“Same goes for you. Ready for some hot chocolate?”
“Yes, where are we going to get said chocolate caliente?”
Jihoon gave me a weird look. “Chocolate what?”
I stared at him, stunned. “Chocolate caliente. Caliente means hot in Spanish. Therefore, hot chocolate. You didn’t take Spanish in high school?”
He shook his head. “Nope, I took Japanese because I’m a weeb.” I snorted.
“Wow, I should be surprised but I’m not.” He pushed me playfully and I tried not to freak out over the warmth of his skin.
“You’re telling me you don’t watch any anime?”
I rolled my eyes. “Of course I watch some anime. But am I full blown weeb... no.”
He narrowed his eyes at me. “I can change that, don’t worry.”
“You still didn’t tell me where we are going.” My fingers felt crisp from the cold air. It wasn’t snowing tonight, but the ground was still white.
“Aha, we are going to my favorite cafe called ‘Pink Heart Cafe’. It is decked in pink hearts.”
“As expected from a Pink Heart Cafe.” I joked. In the near distance, I noticed a sign that had a baby pink heart that wrote ‘Pink Heart Cafe’ in cute lettering.
I crinkled my nose from the cold air. “What, you don’t like pink?”
“No, no, I love the color pink actually. It’s just kinda cold out here.” He nodded.
“Maybe it would be warmed if we held hands... maybe.”
For the first time, I felt comfortable with someone’s flirtatious comment.
I smirked and hooked my hand with his. I felt my heart beater faster. Much faster. And I loved it.
I saw him smile widely and hide it with his hair.
“I’m a lucky guy.” He whispered.
We walked into the cafe.
“Hi! Welcome to Pink Heart Cafe, for here or to go?”
“For here, please.” The woman nodded.
“Please take a seat. We will come take your order soon.”
We took our seats in the corner, next to the pink fairy lights. I was in love with the aesthetic.
“Cute place. And fancy it seems, they come take our order at the table.” I sang a bit of Twice’s Fancy.
“Oh gosh, you love Twice?? Me too!” I shrugged nonchalantly.
“I mean, I like them, their songs are cute and catchy but I’m not a diehard fan.”
He frowned. I can change that too.
I sighed and rolled my eyes dramatically. “Wow, it seems like there are a lot of things you want to change about me. What do you even like about me?” I teased.
He smiled harder and I noticed a blush on his face.
“Uhhh, that’s a good question. I like... I like how you’re honest with your emotions. I like how you’re good at photography. I like that you want to become an RA because of the money and--” I gasped and pushed him on the arm.
“That’s not the only reason! Yes... the pay is good, but I like helping people.”
Our laughter died down as he gazed at me intensely.
“You like helping people? Tell me more about that.”
I paused. No one had asked me that before.
“Um, no one’s asked me that before. I guess I just like to see people happy. I like appealing to people’s emotions and most times, I’m pretty good at making people like me.” I said honestly. I saw his face light up at my words. “And I also want to be a teacher after I graduate, so being an RA would help improve my social skills and teach me how to interact with those younger than me and work through their problems. I don’t know, people say it’s hard and that it can be tough if kids come to you with suicidal thoughts and feelings of anxiety and depression, but I mean, I just want to do it and give back to the community somehow... I don’t know. ” I mumbled off, feeling like I said too much.
His gaze was so serious, I was scared I bored him to death.
He leaned closer to me and I freaked out. I held my breath, waiting for what was next until he spoke.
“You’re so awesome.” He finally said.
That... that was surprising.
“Um, thanks?”
“I’m serious! That’s so amazing why you want to be an RA. Honestly, I took up this job because it pays well and I’m good at talking to people, but sometimes I couldn’t care less about my residents. I like how you’re so kind to people.”
I laughed, “I’m not that nice.”
“Yeah right, you were nice to me the first time we met. And I could’ve been a creepy dude and I almost made you break your camera.”
“Well, I was nice to you because you are a cute boy.” He choked on his drink at my blunt words. I grew shy all of a sudden and laughed with him.
“Jesus, give a boy a warning before you say such words.” He was pink in the face and I felt my heart warm.
“It’s true, you are attractive. But it is also true that I’m not nice. My roommate is irritating the heck out of me and I have to tell myself every time I talk to her to say nice things and not hurt her feelings ‘cause she’s so damn sensitive.”
He paused for a moment. I was nervous he would think I was a bad person. Which... technically is what I’m trying to convince him of.
“Wow, you just got ten times nicer.” Now it was my turn to choke on my drink.
“What? I just told you I have to force myself to be nice to my roommate even though I just want to snap at her all the time.”
Jihoon leaned back in his chair with a smug look on his face. “Exactly! Most people would’ve just called her a bitch and moved on! Moved out or from what I’ve seen, some girls do mean shit like throwing another girl’s clothes out of her closet or flirting with her boyfriend. You... you just be nice when someone is mean to you.”
“She’s not mean, just rubbing me the wrong way.” Jihoon rolled his eyes.
“See? You are still defending her even though I’m sure she’s putting you through more than other people would take.”
I shrugged. “I don’t know, most people don’t take me seriously when I talk about it.”
“Try me.”
I hesitated at first, but when I saw his open and honest look, I spilled.
“Well, I’m quite an introverted person so I need my alone time. And when I told her, this was actually the night that I met you, um, I told her that I wanted to be alone. And then she invited people over to the room and yes, they left soon, but when I’m in my isolation mood, I just... I just don’t even want to look at people.”
He stared at me with a curious look so I rambled on. “I know, it’s dumb-”
He placed a gentle hand on top of mine.
“No, that’s not dumb at all. She should’ve respected your words. I would be so mad. Give me more!” He pounded his fist on the table for dramatic effect.
I felt my heart lighten when he wanted to hear more of my words. I was so used to people ignoring me and brushing over my concerns.
“Uh, well, just... well not just Naeun, my roommate, but some of my friends in the same dorm as me. They are just really judgmental and the negativity just pains me. I don’t like judging others before getting to know them, so hearing them talk bad about random people they don’t know just pains me. And I’m no saint, yes I judge people, but I make sure I talk to them first and get to know them before I make judgments.”
Jihoon smiled. “You keep getting better the more I get to know you. I do the same thing, my friends think I’m crazy when I say ‘hey that dude looks kinda mean and no one likes him, i’ll be friends with him’!”
My eyes widened. “Oh my god, that’s how I met most of my friends!”
We laughed as we bad mouthed our friends and the people who have hurt us.
“Why do you stick with such crappy friends? No offense, you deserve so much better.”
I shrugged. “I mean, everyone says that to me and truly, I don’t even know. I just feel so connected to them now and they have their good moments-”
“Good moments aren’t enough if they consistently hurt you.”
“I know, I know! I just... maybe I’m not that good of a person then if I stay with them. Like people say, you are who your friends are.”
“That’s bull, you’re a good person, I know that. And your friends don’t even care to listen to you rant, I can tell I’m the first person you told all this stuff too because you have flames in your eyes. You deserve friends you can trust and are able to rant to. I promise.”
I bit my lip, thinking of what to say.
“Thank you, I guess I just think I am helping them by staying with them. I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”
“Just know that you have me now, and if you ever need to rant or vent or whatever, I’m here for you. You have me now.”
I felt a wave of emotion wash over me. No one’s ever said that to me before and meant it. I know he meant it, it was written all over his face.
I nodded slowly, accepting the moment we were having.
We sat in a moment of silence until the waiter came for the check.
I dug through my pockets to get out the ten dollar bill I stuffed in there.
“Hah funny,” Jihoon chided when he whipped out his card before I could do anything. I gasped.
“Ah, Jihoon, I brought money!”
He tsked and stood when the waiter gave him his card back. “Yeah right, I’d never let a girl pay on the first date, that’s like... illegal.” I rolled my eyes, until I realized what he had just admit.
“Date?” I questioned carefully.
He looked away from my gaze, like he didn’t mean to say the word.
“Yes... date. Do you have a problem with that?”
I grinned.
“Nope.”

the perp II
note: I am practically making up laws in this. I have no idea how police and justice work in the US, nor in my country tbh, so please hold your disbelief. This is inspired by Brooklyn 99. If you haven’t watched it, you should.
note 2: I’m trying to write as much as possible, and to stop obsessing over the small details and just let the story flow. Which means that this will probably have a lot of imperfections, but a part 3 will be coming soon :))

Part 1 | Masterlist
An insistent knock startled Feyre out of her creative trance. She looked up to her boss’s usual stoic face.
“Captain Azriel,” she nodded in acknowledgement, trying to calm her panic down. He had only knocked once on her desk and folded his arms behind his back. That was never a good sign.
“My office. Now.”
Feyre blinked at his retreating figure. He hadn’t returned her acknowledgement. That was a terrible sign. She quickly followed him to his office as there was nothing he hated more than tardiness.
“Yes, Captain?”
He was already in his seat, hands steepled on his desk. “Close the door, detective.”
She did, noticing the keen gaze Lucien kept directed their way. She smiled and closed the blinds, too.
“Take a seat.”
She did, and then looked at the captain expectantly.
“Did you threaten a fellow officer with a gun?”
Feyre’s blood froze. “Captain, I - ”
“I have just received an official complaint from Detective Rosetool stating that you twisted his arm behind his back, pressed him against a wall and put a gun to his head.”
“It wasn’t to his head,” Feyre couldn’t help arguing. “It was to his spine.”
The captain leaned back in his seat, his expression unchanging.
“I didn’t want to kill him, only paralyse him.” Even she knew she sounded bratty.
“So you would have willingly maimed a fellow officer?”
“I didn’t actually do it, now did I? Besides, if we’re at the stage of filing official complaints, I might as well present one myself. Detective Rosetool is a sexist asshole who thinks that our past relationship gives him the right to get involved in my cases, to ask about my comings and goings, to follow me home and threaten other male fellow officers who dare speak to me. He has abused me multiple times prior to our break up, and I have several scars and medical reports to prove it.”
Feyre was breathing hard. She had stood up at some point during her tirade, and was ready to submit her resignation and storm off this Cauldron damned precinct if she had to. Why she hadn’t reported Tamlin before, or left all of it behind, she didn’t know. Her throat was starting to close up, tears pricking her eyes. But she would not break down in front of her superior officer. She. Would. Not.
“Alright.”
Feyre blinked. “Alright?”
The captain’s gaze was steady, either oblivious to the storm of emotions coursing through her or wisely choosing not to comment on it. “I will submit your formal complaint.”
“What about Tamlin’s?”
“As it is not entirely truthful, I have the right to refuse to forward it.”
Feyre could not believe her ears. “Why are you doing this?”
“Yours is not the first complaint I have received about detective Rosetool. Many others have spoken up about his inappropriate behavior before, and his record is not as clean as he would like it to be.”
“Sir,” her voice was shaky with unshed tears. “You do realize that his dad is the former NYPD commissioner, right? This could get you in trouble.”
Captain Azriel’s smile was small and full of menace as he said, “Do not worry about it, detective Archeron. I have my ways.”
***
The day after her intriguing conversation with the hairdressers at Dora’s, and her sob fest following her talk with Captain Azriel, Feyre went around the shops in that neighborhood looking for eye witnesses. She did not use her sketch, however, as that would have been a little unprofessional. And embarrassing, she thought as she remembered the powerful body, the sexy smirk and the violet eyes she had drawn the previous night in the privacy of her own apartment. Then her thoughts drifted to the dream she’d had of being pressed against a tattooed chest and cocooned in huge membranous wings.
And touched in places she hadn’t been touched in a while.
“… gone home by then. Detective?”
She nodded absently. If she hadn’t been so focused on hiding her flushed face behind her hair as she pretended to write something down in her notebook, she would have noticed the nervousness radiating off the owner of the sea food restaurant. He kept wringing his hands, his forehead shone with sweat and his feet were shifting constantly.
“Detective, actually…”
Feyre’s head snapped up at the careful tone. “Yes?”
“There is one more bit of information that might help you, but I don’t know if I can…” he trailed off with a wince.
“No one will know you told me, Mr. Varian.”
He swallowed audibly, then seemed to steel himself. “It’s about Dora, the owner of the salon.”
She nodded.
He hesitated, glancing at the salon behind her. Feyre tried her best to look reassuring.
“Her boyfriend is in the mafia.”
She held her breath. “Do you know which one?”
He cleared his throat. Once. Twice. “Actually… he’s the head of Hybern.”
Feyre felt like she went fishing for eels and caught a shark instead. “Are you certain?”
“I see him leaving her salon at 11:15 every night.”
She wanted to whoop and jump around in joy. David Hybern was just the kind of big fish she needed to catch to get her a promotion, hopefully away from the flower tool. “Thank you, Mr. Varian. You’re doing this city a great favor.”
And me, she thought, giggling internally, before mentally scolding herself for her selfishness.
“Just get him off these streets,” the chef answered wearily. “He strikes terror in everyone’s hearts. My kids can’t even sleep these days.”
“Rest assured, Mr. Varian. We will try our best to put this criminal behind bars.”
***
“So I heard our perp is quite the hunk.”
Feyre snorted. “They said he had violet eyes and blue hair.”
“Maybe he’s not human. Maybe he’s a vampire,” her partner, Suriel, speculated. “Or a faerie. My chaman told me those are on quite the rampage lately.”
Feyre rolled her eyes.
“What? A thief who doesn’t steal anything, who is so hot he charmed the pants off his victims, and who disappears into the night. Doesn’t this sound fantastical to you?”
“One, maybe he was just there to gather intel, and he’s planning his heist for later. Two, there is such a thing as Stockholm’s syndrome. And three, at least half of our perps disappear into the night.”
“Why would someone plan a heist on a hairdressing salon?” Suriel’s tone was dismissive. “It’s not even that fancy.”
Feyre kept silent, her eyes fixed on said salon.
“You know something, don’t you? There is more to this case that you’re not telling me.”
“Well, maybe you should’ve been there, Suriel. Next time, don’t leave me to interrogate moonstruck women alone.”
“It was a bad day for Pisces! I couldn’t get out of the house.”
“There is no such thing as astrologically impaired days, Suriel.”
Suriel glowered. She hated when her partner dismissed her beliefs, and Feyre let her rant about astrology more often than not; but when it got in the way of their job, she drew the line.
“So, why are we on watch duty?”
Feyre’s eyes roamed the street, lingering on the dark corners and on the roofs surrounding Dora’s. “I told you he might be planning a heist.”
“Cut the crap.”
“Dora is dating David Hybern.”
Suriel gasped.
“He supposedly leaves the salon every night at 11:15pm.”
Detective Pisces, as she liked to call herself, was now bouncing in her seat. “So we’re here for Hybern, not the faerie hunk?”
“I don’t know. The robbery is weird. Maybe it’s linked to Hybern. Maybe our perp is in a rival gang and wanted to use Hybern’s girlfriend as leverage.”
“But he didn’t do anything to Dora. You said he even apologised.”
“Maybe he was looking for drugs? I mean Hybern is one of the biggest Fairy Wine suppliers in Velaris.” She ignored Suriel’s meaningful glance at the drug she mentioned.
“But why would he look for it in Dora’s purse?”
Feyre was spared from admitting her lack of ideas as she saw a silhouette pass near the window.
“Did you see that?” Suriel asked.
They were out the car and halfway to the salon before Feyre could answer. When they were five meters away from the front door, the lights were turned on. Feyre could just make out three silhouettes in Dora’s office. Suriel gestured for her to go in first, signaling that she’d come in through the back door, as was their usual modus operandi. Feyre nodded, grabbed her gun, and hurried in the salon. The main room was dark, but she could see enough to tell that nothing was amiss. The office was quiet. Feyre stuck to the wall, carefully nudging the door open with her foot.
“Who’s there?” asked a gruff male voice.
She held her breath.
“Do come in, officer. We were awaiting your arrival.” This time, the voice was deep and husky and caused a shiver to run down Feyre’s spine.
She braced herself, then burst into the room, gun cocked in her hands. She shifted it between the three people.
“NYPD, freeze!”
“If your strategy was to scare us into a heartattack, detective, it only worked on me,” Dora stated dryly from where she was held at gunpoint by none other than David Hybern himself. Feyre fixed her gun in his direction.
“Pointing your gun at the first person you see. Not a smart tactic, detective,” mused the husky voice from her right.
She slowly turned her head, almost dropping the gun she kept pointed at Hybern as her eyes beheld the most beautiful man she had ever seen. He was tall and tanned like he just got back from a vacation in Malibu. His muscled, shirtless chest bore an intricate tattoo. She hated to admit it, but his black hair did gleam blue. And the eyes that were studying her as meticulously as she had him were indeed violet.
There was only one small detail that ruined the wonderful portrait.
The faerie hunk had a gun pointed at her head.

Previously:
Your captor swore under his breath, now seeing that he wasn’t going to win. There was a moment of silence. A stalemate. Bucky held your gaze and you saw the debate running through his mind. If he aimed for Rumlow, he would likely hit you, too, but there was no way he could let him go, either. He needed a distraction. You had to catch Rumlow off guard, gain the element of surprise.
That was when you knew what had to happen. Staring into the brilliant azure stare of the detective, you offered a little smile, followed by the smallest of nods. His eyebrows raised, a flicker of fear upon his face. You inhaled the best you could and then made sure he was watching as you mouthed the following words.
Three…
Two…
One…
“NO!”
_________________
It all happened so fast and yet in slow motion simultaneously. Bucky’s objection rang out as you unexpectedly threw your weight to the left and went limp in your captor’s arms, allowing your legs to collapse. Catching Rumlow off guard, he could no longer hold you up, now failing to hide behind you.
Sharp pain blossomed in your side as a gunshot rang out, causing the arm around you to loosen. You fell to the concrete floor in a heap, hearing the sound of a thud next to you a second later.
Chaotic footsteps and shouting echoed throughout the parking garage once again as a buzzing in your ears began. Warm hands clutched your face, your eyes fluttering closed as a sudden tiredness took over. A voice tried to call to you, but it sounded too far away.
Sleep beckoned. You only wanted to rest a moment. The tempting tendrils of unconsciousness slowly claimed you.
Then everything went dark.
_________________
A constant, rhythmic beeping was the first sensation to permeate your comfortable slumber, annoyance gathering your brows with a frown. As the fog lifted, you felt the crisp, stiff sheets you were lying on and the overwhelming scent of disinfectant assaulted your nose. Turning your head to the side, you blinked at the harsh, unnatural light until your vision cleared.
Someone sat at your bedside, his head resting on the bed near your hip as he leaned forward awkwardly in the chair. His chestnut locks were mussed, face turned away from you. He clasped your hand tightly even in sleep, you noticed with a smile.
You reached across your body with the other hand to comb fingers through his silky strands, causing him to stir with a groan. Slowly sitting up from his cramped position, he rubbed a hand over his face before his eyes met yours, then widening in surprise.
“Y/N! Oh my…oh thank God,” Bucky cried out, touching his cheek to your hand before launching out of his seat to kiss your lips gently, but passionately before pulling away an inch.
“Hi,” you croaked in greeting through your parched throat with a tired smile.
“Hey, yourself,” he grinned, his forehead pressed against yours. “How are you feeling?”
“Um…okay, I guess. A little groggy. How long was I out?” you asked, then wincing as you tried to twist your abdomen toward him.
“Careful! Don’t want to pop your stitches,” he warned calmly. “About 16 hours. I’m glad you’re awake and feeling alright cause now we can talk about WHAT THE HELL YOU WERE THINKING, PUTTING YOURSELF IN HARM’S WAY,” he bellowed at you, finally releasing your hand.
He continued to rant as he paced on the floor beside your bed.
“How could you have been so reckless? You willingly allowed yourself to be alone with a known serial killer and were about to leave the building with him headed to God knows where, if we hadn’t found you first! I mean, how could you do that, Y/N? How could you act so foolishly?” he demanded. Finished speaking, he finally looked to you for answers.
You took the deepest breath the tightness in your side would allow before replying. “Did you get him?”
“What?” he asked, perplexed.
“Is he in custody?”
“I…yeah. We got him. He’s actually a few floors down, handcuffed to a bed right now and hopefully in a lot of pain,”  he reported with a dark expression.
“Okay. Then it was worth the risk,” you stated with a shrug.
He scoffed in disbelief. “Wha…No! It wasn’t! We had him surrounded, there had to have been another way that didn’t involve you getting stabbed and winding up in the hospital! This is my job, Y/N. We could’ve…I mean…I was supposed to keep you safe,” he spoke the last words dejectedly as he slumped into the chair, dropping his head in his hands.
“Bucky…” you whispered, reaching for him. “You did protect me. You came for me like you always have. Seeing you gave me the strength to do what I did. I knew you’d save me.”
He finally met your eyes with a teary smile, grasping your hand in his.
“What actually happened with Rumlow?” you asked. “It’s all bit fuzzy still. And how did you make it in time?”
He took a deep breath. “Well. After the false alarm in Harlem, we canvassed Rumlow’s old neighborhood but came up with nothing, so I decided to head your way and maybe relieve Barton from duty for a few hours. But when I called, he didn’t answer so I tried your cell. I hadn’t received a text in a while from you so I got worried. I called you with no answer so I tried Barton again. He finally picked up and told me about the armed robbery, and how he made sure the perp wouldn’t get past security. I was pissed he left you alone, but knew he was nearby at least. That was when I got a call from…you, actually. Or your phone at least. It was your boss, what’s her name? Natalie?”
“Natasha? How…”
“Right, Natasha,” he hurriedly continued on. “She saw my string of worried texts and decided to call me as you requested, I guess? She said you were in with a client but seemed to be concerned about a missed call. I asked her to describe the client, which she said she couldn’t do out of confidentiality but when I mentioned certain characteristics related to our perp including the scar on his left cheek, she chimed in and thought it might be the same man.”
He finally took a breath while your mind was whirling. You squeezed his hand and he was motivated to finish his story.
“We were about 10 minutes away when we got a call from dispatch about a suspicious vehicle parked in the garage of your building. We had put out an APB regarding any possible transportation Rumlow might have at his disposal, which included his mother’s car, so the license plate was flagged and security called us. Just as we were screeching to a halt outside the building, your boss called again saying you had just left with the man and you were acting strange. Our best guess was he would go to the car with you or make a run for it so that’s why I headed for the garage while Steve’s team covered the exits. I’m glad we were right,” he huffed out an exhausted sigh.
You briefly consider what might have happened if Bucky’s timing wasn’t so impeccable, shuddering at the thought.
“I heard a gunshot, I think…” you squint in remembrance.
“That was me,” he boasted with a smirk. “I put a bullet in that bastard’s shoulder. Non-lethal on purpose, of course. I want him to confess his crimes, give closure to the grieving families, and rot for the rest of his life. Death is too kind for him,” he spat the words out bitterly, now done with his tale.
After a short silence for you to process this, you allowed yourself a smile. “You’re amazing, do you know that?”
Bucky ducked his head in embarrassment, a blush rising in his face. In response he pressed a kiss to your palm and then pressed it to his cheek as he smiled brightly at you. “I’m still mad at you,” he stated, trying to muster up some anger in his tired state.
“I understand, but I don’t regret it,” you replied, holding strong to your conviction. “Something had to be done.”
He huffed out a small sigh of frustration. “Yeah, but it didn’t have to be you. I mean, what if I hadn’t made it in time? How could I live with myself if….” he trailed off, his voice breaking.
“I would have fought,” you answered without a doubt. “I wasn’t going with him like a lamb to the slaughter. I wasn’t going down without a fight. I would have found an opportunity and done what I had to survive.”
Nodding as he tried to blink back tears, he agreed, “I know you would have.” He placed a hand to side of your face, brushing a thumb across your cheekbone.
“I was curious about one thing…” you asked tentatively.
“Ask away.”
“Tell me…how many people coming out of the elevator did you scare half to death before we arrived?” you asked with a cheeky grin.
He threw his head back in laughter, clapping a hand over his chest. “Only the one. This guy looked like he was about to wet himself and ‘fess up about all his unpaid parking tickets.”
“Poor guy,” you said with a laugh, then wincing as you held your wounded side. Laughing wasn’t the best idea.
Bucky leaned forward once again to capture your lips with his, placing a hand against your neck to deepen the kiss a moment before pulling away.
“You scared me, Y/N. Don’t you dare do that again. I thought I was going to lose you just when I had found you,” he confessed, murmuring against your lips.
“I’m sorry,” you said, pulling away. “But hey, matching abdomen scars, huh?” you grinned up at him.
He paused, then realizing that you and he now had wounds on the same side of your lower back: him with a previous gunshot wound and you from a knife. He chuckled briefly.
“Well, that’s not the kind of bonding I thought would occur this early in a relationship, but…”
You wrapped your arms around his neck, resuming the kiss.
Just then, the hospital door opened and you two broke apart.
But it was too late. There was a witness to your loving embrace.
